Report from Victorian Meeting: Tuesday Nov 19th - Dandenong Ranges 11 members met in the carpark of William Rickets Sanctuary at 10 am.

We spent an enjoyable time viewing the many sculptures set in the towering Eucalyptus regnans all of which were part of the

life's work of William Ricketts. We watched a short video presentation where William told of his long time affinity with Aus-

tralian Aborigines and his eventual acceptance of their philosophy and his acceptance of his Totem the Lyrebird which inhabited

the surrounds of his home & potters studio on Mt Dandenong.

William Rickets depicting his adoption of Lyrebird Totem

Interestingly many of the regnans had a rope stretching to the very start of the canopy. On quizzing the ranger I discovered they

need to regularly inspect the canopy for any small limbs which may fall and damage the sculptures beneath so it is necessary for

an arborist to scale these giants of the forest on a regular basis.

Page 3: A MESSAGE FROM TRUSTEE HARRY · We watched a short video presentation where William told of his long time affinity with Aus-tralian Aborigines and his eventual acceptance of their

Our next stop was the Mt Dandenong Arboretum established late in the 19th century. This really is a tree museum of approxi-

mately 16 hectares, specialising in deciduous trees & conifers from across the world, including Asia & North America. The

collection also includes rare specimens listed on the National Tree Register. The Arboretum links to numerous walking trails

and is close to the Mount Dandenong Observatory.

All six families of confers are represented in the plantings at this site. Listed below are the specimens we viewed. Cupressaceae

Thujopsis dolbata (Hyba)

Pinaceae

Picea abies (Norway spruce), Picea sitchensis, Picea smithiana (Indian or Himalayan Spruce), Pinus ponderosa (Ponderosa

Pine), Pinus canariensis (Canary island Pine), Pinus pinaster (Maritime Pine )

Sciadopityaceae

Sciadopitys verticillata (Japanese Umbrella Pine)

Podocarpaceae

Podocarpus totara (Totara) endemic to New Zealand

Araucariaceae

Araucaria cunninghamii (Hoop Pine) Queensland, Araucaria araucana (Chilean pine or Monkey Puzzle Tree)

Also present is Taxaceae, represented by Taxa baccata (Yew) but beyond our walking time In all we spent a good hour inspecting the above species under John Lyons guidance as most of specimens were unmarked.

We then moved on to the R J Hamer Arboretum, home to more than 150 species of native & exotic trees. This arboretum is set

out like a series of mall forests similar to the new National Arboretum in Canberra.

We enjoyed a BBQ lunch and a brief general discussion followed, regarding our future meetings.

Minutes of the 2012 IWCS Meeting in Busselton held on 19.10.2012 It was moved by Colin Martin and seconded by Darby Munro, that the minutes be accepted as a true and accurate record.

Carried.

Business Arising from the 2012 IWCS Meeting in Busselton. 5.1 Sincere thanks were conveyed to the organisers of that meeting, Charles and Lalleen Broadbent, Les and Eve Small and the

rest of the team from Western Australia for a great meeting.

5.2 Morris Lake reminded those present of the Postage Subsidy available to those supplying overseas members with samples for

specific projects. It was resolved to keep this item in the budget for the coming year.

5.3 Morris also urged members to continue to contribute articles to ensure World of Wood keeps up its Australian content now

Morris has relinquished the job as editor.

5.4 Morris also acknowledged Peter Simpson who has now taken over as editor of “Down Under” from him. Thanks to Peter for

taking on this job and Morris urged those present to keep the editor supplied with material to ensure that Down Under re-

mains relevant to members.

State Reports: South Australia

Since the annual meeting in Busselton last year, we have only held two meetings. We had a successful meeting in November at

the Adelaide Botanic Park with 12 members attending. Unfortunately, there were 14 apologies. Prior to the heat of the day, Ron

Allen conducted a morning guided walk showing us various significant trees in the Botanic Gardens. The walk was followed by

lunch and then the meeting to discuss activities for the following year. After the meeting members shared in mystery wood re-

lated parcels that were donated by those present.

On the 5th of May, 11 members enjoyed a trip up to the home of Richard Hamilton & Francesca Kinnane at Ashton. Prior to hav-

ing lunch we enjoyed a walk up to the top of the hill (very steep) above their home to be shown work in progress. We were

shown a plantation of Eucalypts and other native plants. This worked up a good appetite for what was to follow. Richard & Fran-

cesca demonstrated their expertise in the making of pizzas. A beautiful lunch was enjoyed by all. (Would love his pizza oven)

After lunch we held our meeting and then drove down to the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens where Ron & Richard conducted a

guided walk showing us some of the significant trees in these gardens. In July Kym Jones Exhibition Events again offered us a stand 6 by 3 metres at the Tools & More Expo at no cost. The theme for

our display was on burls and the interest shown by members of the general public was excellent. The roster was filled by willing

members who also assisted in supplying some very interesting burls and a Lignotuber (sometimes called root burls).

Ron Allen & I have an association with the Australian Plants Society (SA Region) where we demonstrate woodturning at their

Autumn & Spring shows at the Wayville Showgrounds each year. We set up our display under the banner of IWCS.A different

audience to the Wood or Tools & More shows.

Western Australia 2013

On behalf of the Western Australian membership I would like to thank all those who participated in a very successful and en-

joyable week at the first Regional meeting held in WA at Busselton in 2012. The WA membership has increased by four

since that meeting. Welcome to Bill Dear (ex South Australia), Ian Bax, Bob & Ruth Hingston and Ian & Fiona Kealley. A

DVD has been made of the Busselton meeting, recording some of the activities and places of interest we visited during tours of the South West of Western Australia. These are available at a cost of $5. Many thanks to Don Clarke for his dedicated effort

to prepare and edit the recording.

The WA Group held a meeting on the 20th April at Kings Park in Perth. Les Small organized for a guided tour through the rare

species garden. One of the interesting phenomenon shown during the tour was the change in foliage of a Peppermint Tree

(Agonis flexuosa). The foliage has changed from the standard green leaf to a variegated green and yellow leaf with no inter-

vention from the Kings Park management. It is the only tree to have changed its foliage in that manner. The reason for the

change is not known and is being investigated.

A future meeting in the form of a caravan/camping trip through our wheat belt area is being contemplated for 2014.

Many thanks to all members who contributed to the success of the Busselton meeting. Special thanks to Les Small for his

Treasurers report and Financial Statement for the 2012 Regional Meeting.

Trustee’s Victorian Representative’s Report

Welcome to Beechworth for the IWCS Australasian AGM for 2013. We hope you enjoy your stay here in this historic gold

town and hope you can find the time to have a look around and take in its history. Unfortunately Heather and I have had ongo-

ing medical issues that precluded us from attending the AGM in both Christchurch and Busselton and restricted our ability to travel.

I can only report on one outing this year, the visit to the Springvale Crematorium organised by Laurie & Lillian Keyhoe. Some

fourteen members were given a tour of the facility conducted by Laurie’s son-in-law to take in tree plantings. This was fol-

lowed by a visit to the Berwick Woodworkers Clubrooms. According to all reports it was a very successful outing. Unfortu-

nately Heather & I again were unable to attend due to ongoing medical issues.

Our efforts this year has been mainly directed towards the staging of the AGM.

Doug also acknowledged the efforts Harry has put in to make this meeting at Beechworth so successful with a wonderful pro-

gram well thought out and thoroughly researched. He also acknowledged the work done by fellow Victorians who have con-

tributed to the meeting:

Lillian and Laurie Kehoe who managed the registrations and receipts;

Peter Stone for arranging guest speakers;

Magnets in the attendees’ registration bags, supplied by Keith Tow; Heather Malsem for supplying the knitted scarves and the pyrography bookmarks.

Ian McLaughlin told the meeting he did not support the Victorian members attending the Working with Wood Show either due

to the high costs of stands, and last year no new members were recruited.

- Doug Malsem

Queensland Report

Brian reported there was not a written report at this time. Meetings held during the year included participation in the Brisbane

Working with Wood Show and the Maleny Wood Show. There was also a very successful specimen cutting meeting. Brian

reported he would not recommend the IWCS participate in any more Working with Wood Shows as it has become far too ex-

pensive and it involves too much work for not much return. However, it is up to members to decide. Brian reported he and Col

Martin have assembled an expanded species board and Brian has brought this to the Beechworth meeting.

- Brian Davis

New South Wales Report

New South Wales continues to be a work in progress.

New Zealand Report

The Chairman encouraged members to send greetings to Graham and Judith Trost following the destructive storm which se-

verely damaged many trees on their property in recent days. Those who were present at the New Zealand meeting will remem-

ber the property and the hard work Graham put into developing and maintaining the trees there. It is not yet clear what can be

salvaged from the damaged trees but messages from members would no doubt raise the spirits of Graham and Judith.

Tasmanian Report No report.

Trustee Report 2013 by Australian Trustee Brian Davis Another year has passed and we are here in Beechworth so this will be the last meeting Pam and I will be attending as Austral-

Asia Trustee as our three year term has come to an end. It took some time for me to get used to the way things are run in the IWCS and I would like to thank past Trustees for the advice received when I asked for help. Thanks also goes to all state rep-

resentatives for their help. AustralAsia is such a large region that the trustee needs help to cover the area.

IWCS in the last twelve months has had some financial problems and Membership fees have had to be put up but because of

the exchange rate of our dollar against the US$ we were able to keep our fees at the same level. Our region is one of the few

that has sent extra financial support to the governing body. There was no revenue generated at the South African international

meeting for example, so the AustralAsia region plays a big part in the IWCS and the financial statement will show that our

financial position is on a sound footing but things may change as “experts” are saying our dollar will drop further therefore

Page 6: A MESSAGE FROM TRUSTEE HARRY · We watched a short video presentation where William told of his long time affinity with Aus-tralian Aborigines and his eventual acceptance of their

eating into our membership subscriptions.

There are a couple of special thanks I would like to make on behalf of the IWCS and the first is to Ian McLaughlin for the work

and dedication he has put in to the Dadsworth and Goldsack bequests. It was a big job making specimens from the Dadswell

Collection wood, keeping track of all the names, then arranging the sales and distribution. A big thanks to his helpers too.

The next is to Brian and Lyn Frasers for all the work chasing up and processing of memberships. It is also a big job and be-cause it is done so expertly, it makes my job so easy, thanks Brian.

Pam and I would like to thank everyone that has attended meetings because through the meetings we have met so many people

and made new friends, and learnt so much about our great country and the resources it holds (WOOD).

Good wood collecting. Brian

7.1 Thanks to the AustralAsian Region

Contents of a card recently sent to the AustralAsia region in appreciation of a donation made to IWCS Head Office in the

US:

Hi I just wanted to extend a personal thank you to the AustralAsia region. The donation from the Dadswell & Goldsack

collection went a long way to help the finances of the organization which as you know was in need of extra funding last

year. We appreciate all of the work on behalf of all of you that it took to raise the money to donate to us. Also, thanks to all

of you for your commitment to this organization. We could not do it without you. Best wishes

Kris Troyer, on behalf of all of the members of I W C S

Trustee Election 2013 to 2016 The Chairman told the meeting the Board of the IWCS is made up of Trustees from all regions of the world, US, UK, Europe,

Africa and AustralAsia. The names of the Region Trustees can be found in the World of Wood. When our new Trustee is ap-

pointed the Editor of The World of Wood needs to be alerted so the name can be printed in the next editions.

There is one nomination for Trustee and that is Harry Dennis, nominated by Ian McLaughlin and seconded by Charles Broad-

bent. Harry graciously accepted the nomination and was duly appointed to the role of AustralAsian Trustee 2013 to 2016.

The meeting wishes Harry well in his new role. The ceremony to officially hand over the IWCS …… made by David

Munzberg will be held on Friday night.

Budget for the Forthcoming Year 2013/2014. David Munzberg repeated his suggestion that each State Repre-

sentative set a target amount that will be of benefit to their State, then let the Trustee know in time for the budget to be prepared

for presenting to the AGM.

It was agreed the budget for 2013/2014 be $5,600.

Moved by Eugene Dimitriadis and seconded Colin Martin Carried.

10.1 Signatories on Accounts for Coming Year 2013/2014.

Any two signatures required to access the IWCS accounts.

Access to Conference Account for the new signatories to take effect when all Victorian meeting business is completed.

Moved by Harry Dennis and seconded by Brian Fraser Carried.

Other Reports: 11.1 Dadswell Collection. The Chairman acknowledged Ian McLaughlin, Harry and Esther Dennis, Doug & Heather Malsem for the great success of

the Dadswell Collection project which has resulted in the distribution of the wood in various forms to various members

and others throughout the world. It has also resulted in financial benefit to the IWCS AustralAsia and to Head Office in the

United States. See note from Kris Troyer under Item 7.1.

11.2 Disposal of excess samples. It was moved by Harry Dennis and seconded by Peter Simpson that excess samples from the

Dadswell collection be sent to the US for distribution to members, by the least expensive means. Harry will investigate

alternative ways that may be cheaper than postage. Carried.

11.3 Complete collection of samples. Brian David told the meeting he had made 4 boxes to include one of each of the samples

made from the Dadswell collection and Pam has done pyrography work on the boxes. All four boxes will go to the South

Australian meeting for display and will contain a printed list and information about the Dadswell collection.

All members present congratulated Brian and Pam for this innovative contribution.

11.2 Goldsack Bequest. Eugene reported that he and Ian McLaughlin met with Mrs Gail Goldsack after her husband Bob’s death and negotiated

how to disperse Bob’s collections in a way to benefit IWCS. Some items have been auctioned before, some are in the auc-

tion and some are in the silent auction here at Beechworth.

General Business Meeting 2014 Naracoorte in South East SA. Brian Fraser said the proposed dates would be 18th to 22nd September. The dates

of the Canadian International meeting being held in 2nd to 7th September were discussed. Brian said he would

take this information back to the South Australian committee for consideration.

Meeting 2015 – Queensland. Members from Queensland agreed to host the 2015 meeting and will have further information

for the members at a later date.

Meeting 2016 – Barradine NSW. Harry Dennis said he was keen to have a meeting in New South Wales.

Other General Business 12. 1 Future Publicity for IWCS.

Anne Doran asked about promotion and what is available to members. Much discussion followed.

Following comments in two State reports a discussion was held about IWCS participation in Working with Wood Shows.

Some members thought participation was not really working for several reasons.

The shows were changing their content and focusing on different clients, for example in Brisbane there were only

2 timber merchants present and no Tasmanian wood suppliers.

Costs were high and conditions such as stand size etc were not improving.

Volunteers were scarce and

Page 8: A MESSAGE FROM TRUSTEE HARRY · We watched a short video presentation where William told of his long time affinity with Aus-tralian Aborigines and his eventual acceptance of their

Other more cost effective ways of publicising IWCS could possibly be found.

Charles said he has recruited in WA mainly from the Woodturners and the Woodturners have a stand at the Wood

Show in Perth. Charles said he has plans to have a stall at the Inland Region meeting to endeavour to get more mem-

bers in the Eastern regions of WA.

Some members suggested that recruitment needs to be the responsibility of individual members to sell IWCS.

12.1.1 Arboretum in Canberra. Judy Wheeler suggested IWCS approach people at the Arboretum in Canberra where they

have recently installed a parquetry floor made entirely of Australian woods. This would be a good place to publicise

IWCS and have membership forms available on site.

12.1.2 Council of Woodworking Committee. It was suggested that IWCS should be represented on this Committee. This

could be a way to publicise IWCS to the wider Australian audience.

12.2 New membership forms.

Brian Davis said the supply of the current coloured membership brochures had almost run out. Morris Lake volunteered to

get quotes for more brochures with changes needed. Brian Fraser said from his point of view he would prefer an A4 sheet

format for membership. Depending on the costs of the printing of the coloured brochures compared with plain A4 bro-

chures, a decision will be made as to which will be used. A decision will be made by the Trustee when costs are available.

12.3 Membership Fees. There was much discussion on Membership fees. Morris Lake gave an overview of why funds are remitted to IWCS in the

US. Membership fees reflect the actual cost and it’s not designed to make a profit. There has been a fee rise for members in

the US but because AustralAsia has always agreed to pay the postage for the World of Wood there was no fee increase for this region.

After discussion about increasing the fees a motion was put to the meeting to this effect but the motion was defeated 16-18

with some abstentions.

Therefore the meeting resolved to keep membership fees at the same level.

12.4 Occupational Health and Insurance Matters

The meeting agreed a policy paper needs to be drawn up for IWCS members covering such things as:

Policy for chain saw and other machinery use;

Meetings;

Walks in public parks etc. Harry Dennis, Brian David and David Munzberg agreed to collaborate on this project and Judy Wheeler agreed to be the

resource person.

12.5 Down Under Newsletter.

After some discussion a motion was put to the meeting proposed by Harry Dennis and seconded by Eugene Dimitriadis

that the IWCS members who would like to receive Down Under electronically by email should contact Peter Simpson.

Paper copies of Down Under will still be available to those members who wish to continue receiving the newsletter in this

form. Peter will notify everyone in the next issue of Down Under he sends out. Carried.

12.6 Membership Secretary.

The Chairman paid tribute to Brian Fraser who does an outstanding job as our membership secretary and has done this job for many years. His job includes collecting AustralAsia membership fees, remitting correct amounts to the US (taking into

account the fluctuations of the dollars), keeping track of members who have not paid, checking with State reps to enquire if

the person wishes to continue or what has happened to them etc etc. IWCS here and in the US owes a great deal to Brian.

If anyone has a desire to take over from Brian please contact him as he has indicated he would like to lighten his work

load. The motion to thank Brian for his work was carried with great acclamation.

12.7 The Global Organisation. The Chairman told those present IWCS membership should recognize we are part of an international organisation and it

would be great if we could all get behind our President elect in the US Elaine Hunt as she is the first woman to be elected

to this position. Another person in the US is the Secretary/Treasurer Kris Troyer.

There being no further business the meeting closed at 12.45pm.

November Update -- IWCS Southeast

Regional Winter Woodfest Meeting

February 12-16, 2014

If you work with or have an interest in wood, you should consider attending

the International Wood Collectors Society’s Southeast Regional Winter

Woodfest Meeting on February 12-16, 2014 at the Lake Yale Conference Center near Eustis, FL.

We are planning on three tracks for the daytime sessions.

1) Wood Technology and Identification -- several sessions during the meeting that

focus on such topics as wood structure, identification of wood, wood collections, and

uses of wood like for biomass energy, growing mahogany, and wood products.

2) Demonstrations-- sessions include woodturning, woodcarving, and carving turnings,

woods used for dyes, antique tools, and other woodworking areas.

3) Craft Programs -- sessions expected in such areas as sewing, quilting, or other crafts,

and Bingo.

We will have a special session by Greg Chapman who is featured on the new season of

the History Channel series Ax Men. He lives in Orange Springs, FL and recovers sunken old growth logs form the Ocklawaha

and St. Johns rivers. He has recovered over 100,000 board feet of cypress and heart pine. The cypress log beside him to the left

will yield about 3,000 board feet.

Several other recovered cypress and pine logs are shown below. We will have several of these at the meeting and will auction-

ing off recovered wood.

We will have the Second Annual Wood Valentine Heart Contest and Second Annual Craft Valentine Heart Contest.

If you would like to participate in the Wood Valentine Heart Contest, then construct (turn, carve, create, etc.) a heart from one or

more woods. Glue, screws, wire, string, and other similar fasteners may be used as long as 90% of the entry is wood. To partici-pate in the Craft Valentine Heart Contest, construct (sew, glue, string, create, etc.) a heart from one or more craft supplies or

materials, including wood. Glue, sew, wire, string, or use other similar fastening approaches as long as no more than 20% of the

entry is wood. The valentine hearts for both contests should be no smaller than 1” by 1” by 1/4'” and no larger than 12” by 12”

by 12.” All entries will be judged by vote of meeting participants with the highest number of votes determining the winning en-

tries. There will be three gift cards prizes for each contest – $25, $15, & $10.
