A Message from the President

Our mission is to enable women in all accounting and related fields to achieve their full personal,

professional and economic potential and to contribute to the future development of their profession.

Dear Members, Associates, and Friends:

I am honored and grateful to accept the responsibilities as President of the

Central New York Chapter of the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance

(AFWA) for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. I have been involved with AFWA as a

member of the Board of Directors since 2012. I am hopeful that during my

time as President, our chapter will continue to grow and flourish.

We are working on finding ways to inspire new members to join our

organization while keeping our current members involved and excited. I am

optimistic that we, together, can encourage and revitalize the inactive

members of our chapter who may no longer see the benefit of their

membership.

I am excited to announce that our first Painting and Networking Night has

been scheduled for Friday December 9th at Painting with a Twist in Liverpool.

I am certain that this is going to be a great event for all of our current,

prospective and inactive members.

We’ve just completed our first community outreach event for the year, and it

was a huge success. Our chapter was able to help the lives of so many,

through our sponsorship with the Vera House. I am motivated to seek out

additional opportunities to truly give back to those in our community.

How can you help? We are always looking for new ideas and suggestions.

Have you considered joining a committee, or the board? You can also help

the success of our chapter by attending our events and promoting them

within your individual network. The promoting of events by our members has

proven to be more beneficial than any social media avenue.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events. Any and all

feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

Always,

Kara Cline

Would you rehire a former employee? If so, you’re not alone: A recent Accountemps survey found that 98 percent of human resources managers would welcome back a worker who had left the company on good terms.

Sometimes called “boomerang employees,” rehired workers come with plenty of benefits. They already understand the company and they don’t need as much hand-holding. Also, you’re familiar with their talents, skill set, personality and corporate fit, minimizing your chances of making a costly bad hire. In fact, boomerang employees can be such an asset that some managers and HR departments choose to keep in contact with their “alumni” as a way to recruit passively.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you’re considering hiring boomerang employees, along with a few tips for integrating them back into the office:

When to rehire:

Of course, you wouldn’t rehire former workers who left on bad terms. But it’s not always the right move to ask top performers to come back, either. Here are a few things to think about when former employees want to return:

Why did the person resign from your company in the first place? If the employee left to take a higher-level position elsewhere, then rehiring him for an even more senior role could be a smart move he’ll likely have valuable new skills and experience to bring to the job. The same is true if the employee stepped down to further his education or attain a new certification. . Also, if you reluctantly let someone go during downsizing, it’s wise to consider a rehire during a boom period.
