I LEARN TERM 5 FOCUS: RESILIENCE 24th May 2019
A message from the Headteacher:
As we reach the end of this term, I have to say how proud I have been of our Year 11 and how they are approaching their GCSE examinations. It is clear that there is a lot of hard work going on at home and I thank you for your support with this. Half term will give them an opportunity to have a bit of a break whilst preparing and revising for the two weeks when we return. It’s a long exam season and the pupils sit many more exams with the new GCSEs. We have already notified pupils of some revision classes that are going on in half-term with their teachers, I hope as many as possible will take up this opportunity. As summer approaches, we have a busy Term 6 ahead of us and lots of exciting trips and extra-curricular opportunities. We will be notifying you about this in the Newsletter and via email when the new term begins. Enjoy half-term! Sandra Muir Headteacher

Last week in the Employment Pathway we went to The First Wildlife Reserve. We did two activities. Firstly, we started to identify native British trees and then we did some whittling. We had a short walk around the reserve and used a leaf identification chart to find out what some of the trees in the reserve are. We found oak, maple, hazel, ash, silver birch and holly.
The Employment Pathway
Year 7 Cricket
After a safety talk and demonstration, we whittled green willow to make four tent pegs of equal length. After cutting the willow using a folding saw we created a point to go in the ground using a whittling knife, cutting away from ourselves and using safety gloves. Then we rounded the other end so that it would not splay when hit with a mallet. Finally, we cut a notch to attach the guy rope from the tent. We gain a qualification for safe tool use.
The Year 7’s played Swindon Academy in a 10 over aside game of cricket on Wednesday. Put into bat, Lawn Manor posted an impressive 62 runs for 5 wickets. In response, Swindon Academy came short by 18 runs, thanks to excellent bowling by the home side. A very good win for Lawn Manor. Man of the match, Floyd Fernandes for 12 runs, 2 catches and 1 stumping. Mr Smith
This week in The Employment Pathway we had two activities. Firstly, we continued with our whittling to gain our A.Q.A. award in tool use and whittling. We finished our tent pegs and made other tools like butter knives. Our second task was to maintain our raised beds. The seeds have all started to sprout and the courgettes are starting to get flowers from
which we get the fruit. The tomato plants are in the poly tunnel and are ready to be planted out. Our herbs like thyme and basil will be sold shortly through the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to raise funds for next year’s seeds and new tools.

Year 7 Afterschool Science Club
Term 5 saw the launch of the Year 7 after school Science club and what fun we have had. Week 1 was all about the Fizz. We made exploding volcanoes and expanding balloons. Week 2 we learnt about acids, alkalis and catalysts with our rainbow fizz, test tube rainbows and Elephants toothpaste. In week 3 it was lava lunacy and magic milk. Week 4 was all about the sweets. We used chromatography to investigate dyes in different sweets. Here’s to more Science fun next term. Mrs Maggott.

Firearms and Knife Education (FAKE) by Wiltshire Police
On Thursday 23rd May, Year 7 & 8 pupils watched a Firearms and Knife Education (FAKE) presentation that Wiltshire Police have been delivering to schools and youth groups for a number of years. The FAKE project is all about educating young people regarding the law around Firearms and Knives and the consequences should they be used or carried by them. For the last few years the incidents involving young people and the use of firearms and knives have significantly increased, with 15 teenagers being stabbed to death in London 2015 alone, the highest number since 2008. The FAKE presentation included video clips of people talking about their real life experiences. It also included images of weapons that have been seized from Wiltshire’s streets and also images of some of the injuries that have been sustained as a result of the use of firearms and knives. The presentation also showed how Police respond to a firearms incident, including the kit and weapons that are carried by Firearm Officers. The presentation delivered a hard hitting, frank and honest view on what happens should young people decide to carry/use firearms or knives. All pupils in the school have now seen this presentation and feedback from pupils and staff has been very positive. Mr Langdown Deputy Headteacher

Library club Winners this week:
Thank you to the parents who supported us by buying refreshments at the recent Dance showcase and Year 9 Parents’ Evening, our refreshment stall helped raise over £130 for the school. Our next event is Old Town Festival on Sunday 9th June and we currently need tombola, raffle and lucky dip prizes for our PTA stall (especially as some of our stock was damaged in the recent flood). If you have any unwanted gifts, smellies, bottles, games & toys, chocolates, candles etc. that we could use for raffle and tombola prizes, please drop off to the school via West Manor gate marked for PTA. We could also do with a few more volunteers on the day to help set up, pack away and man our stall. Last year we had a great day in the sunshine. Please email us on [email protected] if you can spare a couple of hours on Sunday 9th June to help out. Many hands make light work and it’s a great way to meet new people and help the school and local community. As the end of the school year is fast approaching, now is a good time to remind you all that the PTA collects outgrown or no longer required Lawn Manor blazers, branded PE kit along with skirts and trousers if in good saleable condition. We are hoping to set up our own online shop of pre-worn items but need the stock to be able to do this. If you have any unwanted items, please drop off in reception marked PTA. Thank you for your support!
