A Message From The Chairman Hello, API Members!
This is just an unbelievable period in our API, Kern County, oil industry and American
history! After no meetings for three months, we finally pulled off a dinner meeting for
our members in June. We had pushed the scholarship meeting to July, thinking that we
would be in good stead by July. And then the governor of the great state of California
decided to shut down the economy of our state once again. He unilaterally closed down
the restaurants in Bakersfield and thwarted our opportunity for a scholarship dinner for
the deserving scholarship recipients. I will not spend time on the politics of the pandemic
but will only advise you that we will not have our annual scholarship dinner in July. At
this time, our board is working on an alternative to the dinner so that the students can
get their scholarship checks, and we hope to be able to resume our normal method next year.
The oil industry is continuing its roller coaster ride, but it is still better than it was three months ago. I even saw
that CalGEM approved several permits for hydraulic fracturing work in South Belridge and Lost Hills, after
Lawrence Livermore Labs gave them their stamp of approval. It only took a year to get approval on permits that
used to take two weeks. Sad, but true, but this is the way of the oil industry in the golden state now.
The next challenge that is facing the industry in California is the bill in the state legislature requiring a 2,500-foot
setback from residences, schools, or other inhabited structures for oil and gas wells and facilities. That is half a
mile from basically anything and will be the beginning of the end of our business if it passes. Please stay alert for a
letter to the legislature that we will be sending out to our members in conjunction with WSPA’s outreach.
We at the SJV Chapter of API are optimistic and still have some events planned for you. As you
probably do not know, we have rescheduled our previously rescheduled annual golf tournament for
October 23, 2020 and have our fingers crossed that we will be able to get together and do this event in
October. Because of the governor’s recent shutdown of restaurants, bars, and anything fun, we have
had to abandon our August date. Everybody that signed up for the golf tournament that was scheduled
for May, is still signed up for the October re-rescheduled event.
We still have our Fall Fun Shoot scheduled for October 2, 2020 and have the entry forms out right now.
You can sign up for that event on our website here: 2020 Fall Fun Shoot. It may seem a little early, but
we are planning on it and hope that many of you will be able to sign up and join us for this fun event.
I realize that hope, in and of itself, is not a plan, but without hope, we become hopeless. So, let us
never lose hope in ourselves and our industry and our country. We will be back.
I love to hear your feedback. Please feel free to call or email your comments or suggestions to (661) 330-0423,
[email protected], or [email protected].
I look forward to seeing you all at the June General Meeting!

New API Lifetime Member - Jay Haney Jay Calvin Haney was born on Sept 29, 1951 in the small town of Arco, Idaho. Jay was a complete surprise
to his mother and father as he was born minutes after his twin brother, Jack. Jay was raised on a farm in
Moore, Idaho with 6 brothers and 2 sisters in a 2 bedroom house along with 4 other boys that his parents
took in.
Jay attended Butte High School where he played football, basketball, and ran track. Jay graduated in 1971
and soon after married Geraldene Philips. Jay and Geraldene had 2 sons: James and Michael. In
1976 their marriage dissolved and Jay transferred to Rexburg, Idaho where he worked for the Soil &
Water Conservation Service and assisted in the Teton Dam disaster. Jay also attended Ricks Collage for 2
semesters.
In 1978 Jay was called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was assigned to
the California Fresno Mission. His mission area was from Bakersfield to Lodi and served for 2 years. After
his mission Jay returned home to the family farm in Idaho but was unable to find work there. Jay then
hitch hiked to Bakersfield and stayed with friends he met on his mission where they helped him get hired
on with Gearhart "The Go Comp." Jay worked there for 2 years as a wire-line operator and met his
“Forever Wife” Natalie. Jay and Natalie were married on June 11, 1982. They had 2 more sons: Cory and
Branden.
In 1982, Jay started working for Pruett Ind as a wire line operator. He moved up to Operations Manager
then to Sales Rep where Jay did a lot of traveling to Japan, China and Mexico. In 2002, Pruett was bought
by Halliburton and Jay continued to work for them for another year before he was laid off.
Jay found work with Spicer Wireline as Sales rep and worked for them for 2 years. In 2005, Jimmy Leal of
PPS offered him a job to help grow their wireline department. Jay worked for PPS for 10 years and
successfully helped build up the wireline department and the company.
In 2015 Jay was contacted by Craig Smith with Sagerider. Sagerider was looking to open a shop here on
the West Coast and they chose Bakersfield for their location. Craig asked Jay to be their Sales Rep and
asked him for his opinion on who to manage it. Jay recommended James Haney and together they
opened Sagerider West in Bakersfield. A year later, based on Jay’s recommendation, Sagerider acquired
Technical Wireline Service gave Sagerider West a strong foothold in the wireline community.
Jay has worked in the Oil, Gas & Geothermal industry for 40 years and has been involved with API for the
last 17 years. For everything that Jay has done for the industry and API the last 40 years,, Jay became
the newest API-SJVC lifetime member at our June 2020 general meeting.
Jay retired on April 30, 2020 and is looking forward to many hours of hunting, fishing, playing with his 11
grandchildren and looking forward to getting to know his 1 and soon to be 2, great-grandchildren.

Corporate Sponsorships
As part of API’s mission to give back to our local community through college scholarships for those pursuing petroleum based degrees and other local educational programs, API has created a corporate sponsorship package that includes membership and tickets to our annual events. We want to thank Chevron SJBU for being API’s third corporate sponsor and look forward to seeing their employees at our future events. There are several sponsor packages available for each business to decide what is best for them. We look forward to signing more up in the months to come. API Social Sponsorship
The American Petroleum Institute SJV Chapter is actively looking for networking social sponsorships. These
networking socials help to build relationships, market products or services, and promote a positive outlook on
the local oil and natural gas industry.
Sponsoring a social will include the following
Email distribution of your company name to the API contact list (600+ indus-
try related emails)
Company logo and promotional items can be promoted at sign in/raffle table
during the social
Social event turnout is typically 40-60 industry related people
Event will be promoted at API general meeting and API newsletter (600+ industry related emails)
Possibility to have joint social with SPE (Society Petroleum Engineers) which will include their
email distribution/newsletter promotion
Social Sponsorship Cost
Cost can range from $600 - $2,000+
Lower end sponsorships typically do not involve a private room secluded for the event but more of a
brewery type setting providing appetizers or food for guest
Higher end sponsorships will typically have a private room (petroleum club, 1933) or any place that will
accommodate the event (providing appetizers/Dinner/Alcohol or what is within the budget)
We can work with any budget
If sponsorship costs are too high, we can look to host a co-sponsor social (you and another company) cost split in half
