A Message from the Chief Welcome to the first edition of our new semester newsletter. We hope you enjoy this new way to keep you informed and connected to exciting news related to our police officers, communication center operators, support staff and the student employees. We intend to make it a regular publication and to use it to keep you in touch with the latest news and developments around public safety, our employees and services. In this and future editions, we want to be transparent and engaging with our community and how we interact with community members. In every issue there will be a “Spotlight” article introducing you to an employee, as well as articles highlighting some of the accomplishments of the department during the semester. I also invite you to click on our “Quick Links” for further information regarding the police department. Sergeant Powers Awarded Officer of the Year On March 22, 2018 Sergeant Stephen Powers was awarded the 2018 Officer of the Year at the Fairborn Council 3724, Knights of Columbus 45 th Blue Coat Awards. The Blue Coat Awards were instituted in 1973 to honor police officers and firefighters in recognition of service to the community. Sergeant Stephen Powers has been a full-time sworn law enforcement officer with the Wright State University Police Department since February 2007. He currently serves as a police sergeant in the Patrol Division at the Wright State University Dayton Campus. Stephen also received his MPA in 2015. Quick Links Crime and Fire Data Coffee and Cookies with the Chief Community Services Emergency Preparedness Silent Witness About Students, faculty, and staff were invited to join Chief Finnie and Wright State Police Officers for the Fall Semester Coffee and Cookies with the Chief event. It was held on October 18, 2018 and provided an opportunity to interact with our officers and ask them questions about their jobs and campus safety. Community outreach and engagement is a cornerstone of the Wright State Police Department, and officers always enjoy the opportunity meet community members. Be on the lookout for similar events during the 2019 Spring Semester and don’t forget to say hi when you see our officers patrolling campus. They’re here for you! Police Narcotics K9 Jenkka Retires After three years in the line of duty K9-Jenkka is now enjoying retirement with her handler Officer Mattison. Jenkka’s retirement ceremony was held on August 22, 2018 at the Hearth Lounge in the Student Union. Many officers from the surrounding area attended the event as Jenkka was frequently called upon to serve the greater community. K-9 Jenkka is a Belgian Malinois and served as the university second narcotics canine. She was a tremendous asset to the community and will be greatly missed. Enjoy your retirement Jenkka! 2018 Operation Move-In Our favorite time of year is when we get to welcome new and returning students back on campus during Move-In Day. Our officers were on duty all day and night meeting students and their families and ensuring everyone had a safe and productive day. Wright State Alert You can receive text messages on your phone when the university is delayed or closed due to winter weather. You may request a copy of this daily crime log at administrative office of the university police department at 118 Campus Services Building. If you would like to see crimes that have occurred beyond the previous 60 day-period, please allow up to two business days to fulfill that request. Information about annual crime statistics and safey and security related polices may be found at https:// www.wright.edu/site s/www.wright.edu/files/pag e/attachments/2018%20ASF R_final%20draft%20%281%2 9.pdf Safety Escorts If you ever feel unsafe walking alone on campus the Wright State Police Department can provide a safety escort upon request. Simply call 937-775-2111 to make the request and a police officer will escort you to your destination. A Message from the Chief

Welcome to the first edition of our new semester newsletter. We hope you enjoy this new way to keep you informed and connected to exciting news related to our police officers, communication center operators, support staff and the student employees.

We intend to make it a regular publication and to use it to keep you in

touch with the latest news and developments around public safety, our

employees and services. In this and future editions, we want to be

transparent and engaging with our community and how we interact

with community members.

Sergeant Powers Awarded Officer of the Year
