A Message from Senior Teacher Jerlin

Greetings to our supporters and friends! The academic year 2016-2017 officially

and smoothly commenced in May in the 3 schools we teach in.

In Kamala School the ministry of education’s ‘Reduce Teaching, Increase

Learning’ programme is well underway seeing the students working on projects

at the end of the school day. Also our teachers have extended our English Inte-

grated Studies (EIS) programme to students in Primary level 2. So we are now

teaching science and mathematics in English to Primary School levels 1 and 2.

In Kamala Child Development Centre (KCDC), Teacher Bella is getting great

feedback from the school and parents alike. Bella is enjoying becoming part of

the local community, joining in with parent teacher days and Mother’s Day cele-

brations.

Kalim School are happy to share that they have had an increase in the number

of students registering this academic year due to the school’s outstanding aca-

demic performance. Teacher Hamant is working together with their teachers to

keep improving the education for the children.

More good news! I am also pleased to inform you that this year, we have 4 new

members in the super teaching team! They are Yulya, Diego, Grace, and Helen.

I am proud to have such a strong team truly committed in their passion to teach

children. Once again, thank you for all your support! We are excitedly looking

forward to what the new school year will bring!

Updates from Kamala

Sponsored Class Spotlight : Teacher Jerlin’s Primary 6/1 Sponsored by Jean-Claude and

Khun Kantaya

P.6/1 consists of 19 promising, talented, cheeky but adorable

young students. The class camaraderie is strong and they look

after each other like brothers and sisters. They are all visual, mu-

sical and kinesthetic learners, preferring to learn with pictures,

dramatizations, music in the background and a lot of group inter-

action - this class is full of energy!

This semester, we are learning themes about themselves and

their environment. The students are learning about their talents,

personalities and future careers. We have designed our English

Programme curriculum to follow the topics that they are learning

from their Thai teachers to further strengthen their learning. Con-

tinuing from our curriculum design last year, we are also support-

ing Kamala School in strengthening their reading skills through

teaching phonics reinforced by reading group sessions. For

P.6/1, we are grateful to have our teaching fellow, Helen, who

facilitates reading group sessions with the students once a week.

Helen does a fantastic job at teaching them how to pronounce

the new sounds and they have already improved greatly since the start of the year!

A huge thank you as well to our other fabulous Class Sponsors:

Anantara Mai Khao, XL Catlin, Kay and Andy Hunter and CB FITNESS in Australia.

Our New Teaching Team

With the start of the new academic year, we would like

to welcome back our old teachers, and introduce you to

our four new teachers:

Diego is from Italy, he comes to us with a BA in

Foreign languages and is a certified ESL teacher.

He is teaching our Mathayom classes this aca-

demic year.

Grace, from the Philippines, is both a nurse and

teacher by profession. She is joining Bella in the

English Integrated Studies programme and is also

teaching Prathom classes. Grace is also our new

Reading Group Coordinator.

Yulya, a qualified teacher from Russia sponsored by Phuket Condos & Homes, is teaching both primary

and secondary classes as well as joining Hamant as Coconut Club coordinator.

Helen is our new volunteer Teaching Fellow from Malta. She is a professional artist, graphic designer

and also an ESL teacher. She is assisting in our classes and helping to organise our Coconut Club ac-

tivities.

Coconut Club

With the start of the new school year we are ex-

cited to be back at Coconut Club! Each month

the teachers choose a different theme to plan

their activities around. The theme for June was

fauna and the students had so much fun taking

part in animal related activities. Teacher Grace

played animal charades while Teacher Yulya

showed the children how to make animal hand

puppets, and at Saturday Reading Group the

children read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We

can’t wait to find out which themes the Coconut

Club Coordinators, Teachers Hamant and Yulya,

have come up with for the coming months.

This month at Coconut Club the students had

loads of fun playing dress up. We had a catwalk

and they took it in turns to strut their stuff with their

favourite music in the background. We had skele-

tons, princesses, a police chase, Spanish danc-

ers, and Muay Thai champions among other char-

acters. They also learned the English words for

various items like tiara, belt and sunglasses. Im-

portantly, none of this would be possible without

our kind supporters who donate supplies for Coco-

nut Club; our children and teachers are very grate-

ful for all the fun Coconut Club brings!

For this academic year we have new Coconut Club

Coordinators. Teacher Yulia is joining Teacher Ha-

mant and together they plan the activities for the week

and make sure the children are having fun and learn-

ing English at the same time. We also have Teacher

Grace who is in charge of Saturday Reading Group

this year.

Every Saturday we take a group of students swim-

ming in local hotels. This would not be possible with-

out XL Catlin who kindly donated us our car and con-

tinue to support us by sponsoring a class. Thank you

XL Catlin for your continuous and generous support!

If you would like to get involved with Coconut Club or

donate any items get in touch with Teacher Hamant at

Pop Up at Bliss

In May we held our biggest

fundraising event of the year, Pop Up at

Bliss hosted at Bliss Beach Club. It was

a successful night with over 250 guests

attending and we raised 1,000,000 Baht!

There was delicious food and drinks,

great music and lovely company. Thank

you to all the guests who came along and

also a huge thank you to our restaurant

and drink sponsors without whom this

night would not have been possible!

Please see the list of our amazing sup-

porters on pages 6 and 7. Going The Extra Mile

Over 10 days in the April school holiday, Teacher Hamant

rode 5,000km on his 110cc motorbike along the border of

Thailand. This amazing achievement helped him to raise

nearly 100,000THB and spread the word about all the

good work that happens at our schools. Hamant finished

his ride at Phuket Bike week in Patong where he was in-

vited on stage to tell the audience all about his achieve-

ment. A massive thank you to all the hotels who spon-

sored his stays and to everyone who gave their support

and donated, he could not have done this without you!

Hamant teaches at Kalim school where our English pro-

gramme is sponsored by Baan Rim Pa.

MontAzure

We are so pleased to announce that MontAzure

are new sponsors of our English programme.

They sponsor Teacher Bella at Kamala Child De-

velopment Centre (KCDC) where over 260 chil-

dren aged 3 to 7 are benefiting from their kind

support.

Our Hotel Sponsors

Every low season, when the sea become unsafe,

we take some of the students swimming at local

hotels in Kamala. Every Saturday afternoon our

teachers arrive at school and find a queue of ex-

cited students. We would not be able to continue

our swimming sessions without the support of XL

Catlin who so kindly donated our car, and the

generous businesses who let us use their pools.

Thank you to Hyatt Regency Phuket, Kamala

Dreams, The Palms Resort and Thanyapura.

Phuket Condos & Homes

Phuket Condos & Homes are one

of our most generous supporters,

this being the second year that they

have sponsored a teacher. This

year they sponsor Teacher Yulya

who is a new addition to the Foun-

dation’s teaching team. We want to thank Phuket

Condos & Homes for their continued support of

our English Teaching Programme.
