October 2015 The Walk Way

Jesus He loves me, He loves me, How can it be? He loves me!!!!

If you are not coming to the monthly gatherings, you are missing out. I should know. I had to

miss a couple of them myself because of work, and coming back to the one in September was a

sweet, sweet balm to my soul. The fellowship of the covered dish dinner, the joy of talking to

fellow Christians, of seeing friends—new and old, and having a gathering service filled with joy-

ous music and fantastic speakers—it was the highlight of my month, like Christmas and a birth-

day all wrapped together in one package.

I am so blessed to be part of this Emmaus community. I feel the prayers that are

sent up by members every day, the sharing, the growing, and the blessings that

continue to flow as the community reaches out to God and live for Him. We truly

are the sheep of His pasture, if I can borrow the theme phrase from my walk.

October is a very busy month for Emmaus. Both the men’s and women’s walk will be held then

(men—Oct 8 to 11) and women (Oct 22-25) and we need your help in so many

ways for them. First of all, please bathe these walks, the pilgrims, the teamers, all

who are involved, in prayer. Then see what you can do to help. We are hoping for

a good turnout for the Sponsors Hour, the Candle lighting, and the Rise and Shine

activity Sunday morning. Come and support the pilgrims as they make their jour-

ney to Emmaus.

Another very important date in October is the deadline for applications to be submitted to run

for the board of both Emmaus and Chrysalis. There are a good number of you out there who

should consider running. Being on the board of Emmaus is like being on no other board. It is a

group of imperfect people letting themselves be governed by God as they pray their way

through decisions enhancing the community. I strongly suggest you fill out an application and

get it in by gathering in October. We would love to have you serve on the board.

I am so blessed. Some days it seems like my life is falling apart, but as the song goes, it is just

coming together. Those of you who are out there facing great trials, know that I am praying for

you. Those of you out there not facing great trials I hope you are praying for me, the Emmaus

board, the community, and all who are suffering.

And never forget. Jesus, He loves me!!! See you at Candle lighting/gathering in October.

A Message From Our Spiritual Director

"But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by

whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." Galatians 6:14

Paul, near the end of his letter to the Galatians, noted that there were those who would try to make a

"good showing" in their outward spiritual expressions. He would argue that the focus was taken off the cross

of Christ and centered upon the works of the flesh, i.e. circumcision. However, Paul would quickly put the

right perspective back where it belonged. The only boasting that could be done would be in the, "...cross of

our Lord Jesus Christ...."

It would be time well spent for us also to consider the depth of the cross of Christ.

We have nothing to boast in that would gain us anymore favor with God than that which is

already present: God's Grace. God's unmerited favor towards us that sees us as we are; un-

done, lost, hurting, and in need of redemption. The weight and penalty of our sin hung on

the cross of Christ. It was there that God, "...made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us,

that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." 2 Corinthians 5:21

With such thoughts in mind, Isaac Watts rightly penned the words:

Alas! and did my Savior bleed? And did my Sov'reign die? Would He devote that sacred head

For such a worm as I? At the cross, at the cross, Where I first saw the light, And the burden of

my heart rolled away - It was there by faith I received my sight, And now I am happy all the

day.

Dear friends, the cross of Christ has never failed and never will! Let it be our boast as well!

This past weekend, God reminded me of the importance of persistence and faith in our ministries, and He led me to

Mark 2:1-5 where Mark recounts for us the story of Jesus healing a paralytic. At the beginning of the chapter, Mark

describes for us the reaction of the people as Jesus would come into a town, and begin to teach. Mark portrays a

picture of large crowds gathering around Jesus to hear His teaching and witness the miracles that He might per-

form. Although this was a testimony to Jesus’ ministry, it also represented a challenge as it impeded people from

getting to see Him. This was exactly the situation that faced four men as they sought to bring their paralytic friend

to Jesus to be healed. Yet, they persisted and found a way around the obstacle. Mark says in Verse 4 that “they re-

moved the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.”

How persistent must these men have been to climb atop of the building, and pull away the thatches of the roof in

order to lower their friend in? How confident must they have been in Christ’s ability to heal their friend that they

not only tracked down and carried their friend to Jesus, but refused to stand down when the crowds prevented

them from reaching their goal.

Like the four men in this story, we often face obstacles in our ministries. I am saddened to inform the Emmaus and

Chrysalis communities that we will not be holding flights again this November. As a community, we have been seri-

ously challenged in reaching potential caterpillars in support of our Chrysalis flights. However, just as the men did in

Mark Chapter 2, we are actively seeking God’s direction and looking for alternative ways to overcome this obstacle

to the ministry of the Chrysalis community. Then, as we look at Verse 5, we are encouraged, for as Jesus heals the

paralytic, He links the miraculous blessing with the faith of the four that lowered him in. So, we are encouraged

knowing that Christ will use our persistence and our faith to bless His people. In fact, we can already see God work-

ing in the hearts of His people through our RUSH held on September 19th. We gathered on the shores of Assateague

for a bonfire beach party, where we were able to worship the Lord and share some food and fellowship. There

were several new faces, and we hope to see them and many more at our next RUSH on November 22nd. All Emmaus

and Chrysalis community members and guests are welcome and encouraged to join us at Craddockville UMC for a

night of worship, fellowship, karaoke, and potluck.

On a separate note, the end of the year is quickly approaching, and it is time to nominate new board members. If

you have teamed on a Chrysalis flight, we ask that you prayerfully consider serving on the Chrysalis board and help-

ing us to seek God’s guidance for this community.

Outreach TO ALL OF THE PRAYER WARRIORS ON THE EASTERN (AND WESTERN) SHORE, It is time to start praying for the upcoming Walks that are scheduled for October 2015. The Little Hut The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements, and to store his few possessions.

Then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened – everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. “God, how could you do this to me?” he cried.

Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. “How did you know I was here?” asked the weary man of his rescuers. “We saw your smoke signal,” they replied.

It’s easy to get discouraged sometimes when things appear to be going badly. But we shouldn’t lose heart, be-cause God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering.

Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God.

For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves, God has a positive answer for it.
