JEWISH COMMUNITY ACTION 2016 ANNUAL REPORT A Message from our Board Chair: The Year in Review Dear Jewish Community Action family, I am writing this reflection from a place of gratitude. In challenging times, I am so thankful to be part of an or- ganization that is making a powerful impact and building relationships and allies across the intersections of race, faith, age, and community. 2016 was a year of extremes. While they might not have al- ways dominated the headlines, JCA and our allies had real, sig- nificant victories to celebrate. These included the passage of groundbreaking Earned Sick and Safe Time ordinances in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul; the inclusion of four new small business navigators in the Minneapolis city budget to help pave the way for equity for all small business owners; and the passage of the first criminal justice sentencing reform at the state capitol since the 1980’s. In addition to hard-won policy victories, we continued to make great strides to cement JCA as a sustainable, for- ward-looking organization. Following up on the success of our 20th birthday in 2015, we grew our membership and built our capacity. Our Annual Meeting and Summit convened over 300 people, many of them new to our work. Our two training programs continue to develop the bench of leaders in our community, and we had success- ful Seeds of Justice and Tzedek Institute cohorts in 2016. We launched our monthly giving campaign, and engaged with Jewish organizations around the Twin Cities in the Life & Legacy program, to encourage planned giving in our community. For all the highs, of course, we have experienced some lows. The increase in hateful speech and exclusionary rhetoric that started ramping up at the end of 2015 escalated into a marked increase in hate crimes in our community and around the country. Immigrants are being scapegoated. Black lives continue to be lost at the hands of law enforcement. Many, if not all, of our core values seem to be under threat, not only from external forces but also from within our own community, as we wrestle with what it means to be in relationship with organizations and movements that challenge us. So many of us have woken up, looked around, and felt like we didn’t recognize our own country in the mirror. Despite how dispiriting the lows are, we can’t spend time wallowing now. There is work to do, and it is pre- cisely at times like this I look to JCA to organize our com- munity to bring a powerful voice to that work. I remain very energized by our work and more committed than ever to racial, economic and social justice in Minnesota. This coming year will bring exciting changes and growth to JCA as we welcome our new Executive Director, Carin Mrotz. As Board Chair, I couldn’t be prouder to be work- ing in partnership with Carin to steer JCA to our next phase. I also especially want to thank Vic Rosenthal for his steadfast leadership for the last 18 years. I hope you will join me in celebrating both of these leaders in the coming months! -JCA Board Chair Elana Schwartzman JCA Board Chair Elana Schwartzman JEWISH COMMUNITY ACTION 2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT

JEWISH COMMUNITY ACTION2016 ANNUAL REPORT

A Message from our Board Chair: The Year in ReviewDear Jewish Community Action family,

I am writing this reflection from a place of gratitude. In challenging times, I am so thankful to be part of an or-ganization that is making a powerful impact and building relationships and allies across the intersections of race, faith, age, and community.

2016 was a year of extremes. While they might not have al-ways dominated the headlines, JCA and our allies had real, sig-nificant victories to celebrate.

In addition to hard-won policy victories, we continued to make great strides to cement JCA as a sustainable, for-ward-looking organization. Following up on the success of our 20th birthday in 2015, we grew our membership and built our capacity. Our Annual Meeting and Summit convened over 300 people, many of them new to our work. Our two training programs continue to develop the bench of leaders in our community, and we had success-ful Seeds of Justice and Tzedek Institute cohorts in 2016.

There is work to do, and it is pre-cisely at times like this I look to JCA to organize our com-munity to bring a powerful voice to that work. I remain very energized by our work and more committed than ever to racial, economic and social justice in Minnesota. This coming year will bring exciting changes and growth to JCA as we welcome our new Executive Director, Carin Mrotz. As Board Chair, I couldn’t be prouder to be work-ing in partnership with Carin to steer JCA to our next phase. I also especially want to thank Vic Rosenthal for his steadfast leadership for the last 18 years. I hope you will join me in celebrating both of these leaders in the coming months!

Dr. Michelle Kuhl has become involved with the Jews of Color workgroup. She credits JCA with encouraging her to speak in public forums and begin to engage in a focus group that seeks to move forward an agenda for Jews of Color in the Twin Cities. Profession-ally, she worked as an administrator, researcher, and teacher at the Uni-versity of Minnesota for almost 20 years. Currently, she has transitioned to working in the business sector part-time and spending more time with her husband and children. She notes that JCA helped her to feel that her perspective was important and to encourage her that change could happen.

Member Profile: Steve Cohen and Lisa Murphy Steve Cohen and Lisa Murphy are a couple who have together become involved with JCA this year but from differing directions. Steve, who in his professional life works in corpo-rate finance, got involved in our Eco-nomic Justice efforts and represent-ed JCA on the Mayor’s Task Force on Earned Sick and Safe Time in St. Paul. More recently he has been work-ing on the effort to include a social justice component to the evaluation of banks seeking to serve the City of St. Paul. Lisa came to us from her career as an educator and has been working with the Juvenile Justice team working issues regarding the future of facilities and programs for Ramsey and Hennepin County youth in the juvenile justice system. Both Steve and Lisa see their work with JCA as a way to express their faith by working to make their community a better place.

Member Profile: Rachel Sandler SilvaRachel Sandler Silva has been involved with Jewish Community Action over the past year with the Criminal Justice Reform Campaign. She was drawn to this work as an opportunity for advocacy and action around larger societal issues facing our community. In her career, Rachel works as a physician at Hennepin County Medical Center and witnesses the challenges faced by her patients including those related to criminal justice involvement and its collateral consequences. Rachel played a key role in the Annual Meeting as MC and a planner, and participated in the Tzedek Institute. Rachel comes to JCA with a desire to live out the Jewish value of B’tzelem Elohim so that we might see a world in which all people are treated in God’s image.
