A Message from Mrs. Marilyn Roth, Director of General Studies Our Politz community gathered together this Monday night as we welcomed the parents of our Early Childhood children to Back to School Night. Mrs. Lesley Gordesky, our Early Childhood Director, explained how we are incorporating the Reggio Emilia approach to learning in our classrooms. Then it was time to meet our incredibly dedicated Early Childhood faculty, who spoke about their individual curriculum and goals for the upcoming year. The Parparim (Butterflies) are so excited to be in school againThe yeladim(children) have been exploring the classroom and are busy learning how to usemagnifying glasses and tape measures The teachers are using the first fewweeks of school to get to know each child and their various interests In keepingwith our Reggio Emilia approach as we learn more about what makes this groupof children tick we will tailor our learning and projects to keep them fully engagedIn the meantime we are building painting cooking and reading As we continueto become acquainted with one another and learn the classroom routines we willplay silly games and learn new songs What a special group of children We lookforward to a year of growth and discovery

By Morah Esti Helberg First Grade Judaic Studies Teacher BH Kitah Alef is off to an incredible start During our first week of school we divedright into learning about Elul and the upcoming chag of Rosh Hashanah Of courseone of the things we spoke about was the Shofar We discussed from which animala shofar comes and also what the shofars job is We also talked about the threedifferent sounds that the baal tokeah (person blowing the shofar) blows Oursages tell us Aino domeh shmiyah liriyah one cannot compare hearing aboutsomething to actually experiencing it In order to help our students reallyexperience shofar blowing we borrowed Rabbi Glusteins REAL shofar and set towork in our classroom practicing trying to blow a tekiah sound We huffed and wepuffed and we blew the shofar Boy did we work hard Some of the yeladim wereactually able to produce a real sound Everyone got a chance to try and we really

had lots of fun A huge thank you to Rabbi Glustein for lending us his shofar toenable this wonderful handsshyon activity Thats one experience that will probablybecome a cherished childhood memory

By Mrs Linda Moskowitz Third Grade General Studies Teacher The beginning of the school year is a very exciting time in third grade which for thisyear has been renamed ldquoCamp LearnshyAshyLotrdquo I have chosen this theme becauseI believe our students are always ready for ldquosrsquomorerdquo learning As the children haveenjoyed getting reacquainted we continued to learn new things about each otheras we shared some of our favorite possessions during a recent Afternoon MeetingDuring this time we have already read several books from the ldquoBlack Lagoonrdquoseries each of which provides a funny look at the return to school My hope is thatour introduction to third grade has left the children filled with eager anticipation of ayear jamshypacked with learning and fun In math the students have begun bystudying place value and are becoming quite proficient in this skill In social studieswe will perfect our map skills with the goal of becoming great ldquomapshyreadersrdquo Aspart of Writerrsquos Workshop we will have an opportunity to write a personal narrativeas we create an original postcard from a place visited this summer In addition ourpenmanship exercises will introduce us to the beautiful cursive style of writingDuring science I look forward to stimulating the studentsrsquo curiosity about a widevariety of topics through various handsshyon activities and followshyup observations Aswe have already reviewed the parts of plants and their purposes we have eachplanted sugar snap pea seeds in plastic bags in our room The children eagerlyinspect their bags daily to check for a sprout In all phases of my instruction theultimate goal will be to help the students achieve to their maximum potential in eachacademic subject My primary objective is for the ldquohappy campersrdquo of third grade tobecome more responsible independent learners throughout this importanttransition year

By Mrs Linda Moskowitz Third Grade General Studies Teacher The beginning of the school year is a very exciting time in third grade which for thisyear has been renamed ldquoCamp LearnshyAshyLotrdquo I have chosen this theme becauseI believe our students are always ready for ldquosrsquomorerdquo learning As the children haveenjoyed getting reacquainted we continued to learn new things about each otheras we shared some of our favorite possessions during a recent Afternoon MeetingDuring this time we have already read several books from the ldquoBlack Lagoonrdquoseries each of which provides a funny look at the return to school My hope is thatour introduction to third grade has left the children filled with eager anticipation of ayear jamshypacked with learning and fun In math the students have begun bystudying place value and are becoming quite proficient in this skill In social studieswe will perfect our map skills with the goal of becoming great ldquomapshyreadersrdquo Aspart of Writerrsquos Workshop we will have an opportunity to write a personal narrativeas we create an original postcard from a place visited this summer In addition ourpenmanship exercises will introduce us to the beautiful cursive style of writingDuring science I look forward to stimulating the studentsrsquo curiosity about a widevariety of topics through various handsshyon activities and followshyup observations Aswe have already reviewed the parts of plants and their purposes we have eachplanted sugar snap pea seeds in plastic bags in our room The children eagerlyinspect their bags daily to check for a sprout In all phases of my instruction theultimate goal will be to help the students achieve to their maximum potential in eachacademic subject My primary objective is for the ldquohappy campersrdquo of third grade tobecome more responsible independent learners throughout this importanttransition year

The Parparim (Butterflies) are so excited to be in school againThe yeladim(children) have been exploring the classroom and are busy learning how to usemagnifying glasses and tape measures The teachers are using the first fewweeks of school to get to know each child and their various interests In keepingwith our Reggio Emilia approach as we learn more about what makes this groupof children tick we will tailor our learning and projects to keep them fully engagedIn the meantime we are building painting cooking and reading As we continueto become acquainted with one another and learn the classroom routines we willplay silly games and learn new songs What a special group of children We lookforward to a year of growth and discovery

By Morah Esti Helberg First Grade Judaic Studies Teacher BH Kitah Alef is off to an incredible start During our first week of school we divedright into learning about Elul and the upcoming chag of Rosh Hashanah Of courseone of the things we spoke about was the Shofar We discussed from which animala shofar comes and also what the shofars job is We also talked about the threedifferent sounds that the baal tokeah (person blowing the shofar) blows Oursages tell us Aino domeh shmiyah liriyah one cannot compare hearing aboutsomething to actually experiencing it In order to help our students reallyexperience shofar blowing we borrowed Rabbi Glusteins REAL shofar and set towork in our classroom practicing trying to blow a tekiah sound We huffed and wepuffed and we blew the shofar Boy did we work hard Some of the yeladim wereactually able to produce a real sound Everyone got a chance to try and we really
