A Message from Mr. Ross... The formative years of middle school present students with many opportunities to grow and learn. As a staff, we know we play an important role alongside parents in helping students find their passion and personal success as learners. Success is a measurement that should be seen as more than just winning an event or getting a 100% on a test. Growth and improvement are equally as important; especially in an academic setting. Some recent examples in our school of success, growth, and improvement are noted below: Students earning Blue Renaissance status as a result of a .5 grade-point average increase. Boys swim & dive team capturing 1st place at the conference meet on account of so many student-athletes swimming personal best times. Science Olympiad Team finishing in 4th place at the regional competition and qualifying for the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year. 8th grade orchestra and band qualifying for the state MSBOA festival. 7th/8th choir qualifying for the MSVMA state festival. Countless other individual success stories of students who have “turned it around” in regards to academics or behavior. A new educational accountability metric that we’ve been asked to examine as a staff is something called Student Growth Percentiles or SGP’s. Simply put, SGP’s are created by placing students in small cohorts with students across the state that have a similar three year M-STEP score average. Within each cohort, students are then assigned a percentile rank indicating how they are progressing in comparison to other students of like ability from previous years. For example, a student who significantly out performs their cohort group would likely see a SGP rank of 90-99. Students who underperform compared to their cohort group would see a much lower SGP ranking. We are still focused on ensuring that our students reach the state-defined proficiency level on the upcoming M-STEP assessments, but now focus even greater attention on making sure all students are experiencing academic growth year in and year out. We value and appreciate our partnership with parents and the community and look forward to sharing even more success stories with you in the near future.

Some recent examples in our school of success, growth, and improvement are noted below:

• Students earning Blue Renaissance status as a result of a .5 grade-point average increase.

• Boys swim & dive team capturing 1st place at the conference meet on account of so many student-athletes swimming personal best times.

• Science Olympiad Team finishing in 4th place at the regional competition and qualifying for the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

• 8th grade orchestra and band qualifying for the state MSBOA festival.

• 7th/8th choir qualifying for the MSVMA state festival.

• Countless other individual success stories of students who have “turned it around” in regards to academics or behavior.

A new educational accountability metric that we’ve been asked to examine as a staff is something called Student Growth Percentiles or SGP’s. Simply put, SGP’s are created by placing students in small cohorts with students across the state that have a similar three year M-STEP score average. Parents of 6th Grade Students: Immunizations ~ Most 6th grade students need a couple of new immunizations (Meningitis and T-dap) after turning 11 and before entering 7th grade. Students are assessed as they enter 7th grade and must be up-to-date before they can start school for their 7th grade year. As your 6th grader has their well-child check-ups and receives the updated immunizations, please obtain a copy of their updated official immunization record and give a copy to the RMS office anytime this year. (We are required to have a copy of this official document in their file.) Immunization Waivers ~ If you are a parent who chooses to waive immunizations for your child, please know that if you haven’t gotten a new waiver since your child turned 11, you will most likely need to get a new waiver which states Riley Street Middle School as the current school and also includes the new immunizations that were not previously required. Getting a new waiver requires making an appointment at the Ottawa County Department of Public Health (Hudsonville Branch Office Phone: 616-669-0040). Only waivers that are obtained this way are accepted as valid. If you have any questions or would like us to check on the current waiver, please contact Anne Erickson at 616.896.1920 or at [email protected].

PLEASE VOTE TUESDAY, MAY 7 ANNUAL OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL

PROPOSAL On May 7, the Hudsonville community will have the chance to vote on our annua l Non-Homes tead M i l l age renewal. This is an annual renewal request that voters have approved for the past 24 years and, if approved,

would generate approximately $4.8 million dollars of operating revenue for our school district. Please note, this is not a tax on primary residences and is not a new tax.

Official ballot language is as follows:

Hudsonville Public Schools Operating Millage Renewal Proposal

This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance.

Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Hudsonville Public Schools, Ottawa and Allegan Counties, Michigan, be increased by 18 mills ($18.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for the year 2019, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2019 is approximately $4,850,000 (this is a renewal of millage that expired with the 2018 tax levy)?
