February 15 ‐ 19, 2016 Take Your Family to School Week A Message from Kentucky PTA President This is a busy month for PTA. As we celebrate Founders Day this February, it is important to remember why we continue to build on the dreams and vision of our founding mothers for a better world for our children. PTA Take Your Family to School Week takes place in February. I hope all PTAs and schools are planning to invite family members of each student to visit the school, to observe the daily routines of the students. We need to emphasize the benefits that parental and community involvement in our schools has on student achievement. AdvocacyNow is time to take action onmany bills that will be comingthrough our LegislativeSession in Kentucky. Thereare several ways to do this.

If you go to lrc.ky.gov, you will find all the bills thathave been introduced, listed by headings and/or bylegislator. KY PTA is especially interested in any billthat relates to children. For example: Appropriationsand Revenue, Juvenile Justice, Health and Welfare, and Education).

Read more about ways you can advocate for ourschools, families and communities.

‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ URGENT ALERT Please call your legislators today in Frankfort. InGovernor Bevins' budget request, he is asking everycabinet to cut their cost to 4.5% starting now and thenan additional 4.5% for next year's budget. Our FamilyResource/Youth Service Centers will be affected bythese cuts. They serve in the Cabinet of Health andFamily Services, not the Department of Education.

Our legislators need to hear from us how valuable andimportant it is to have our Family Resource YouthService Center Coordinators. They are very importantto our parents and their children. They help stop the social barriers that students have in trying to learn. They facilitate getting the students clothing, eyeglasses, transportation, and many other barriers thatwould keep our students from coming to school orlearning. They are the main staple in many of ourchildren's lives.

Call your legislator today. Urge her/him to not cut ourFamily Resource Youth Service Centers.
