Proudly Serving Our Customers from the Appalachians to the Atlantic Volume X, Number 2 The Employee Newsletter of Yancey Bros. Co. August 2011 A Message from Jim Dear All: So, we take a pause from the pretty rough storm of the past few years to notice that…business seems to have calmed down and steadied out a bit. People are starting to say, “the new normal” and “looks like slow growth”. Look inside at our team: babies are being born, we’re hiring again, our safety record does seem to be improving, and overall, we’re looking forward, not backward. This Fall, we will undertake a comprehensive strategy review to assure that we focus on the right plans and goals for the new normal. We want to be the best company we can be for the next generation, too. We have become a very diverse company. Diverse in our people, our backgrounds, and also in the customers we serve and the products and services we offer. This diversity has given us a balance of different opportunities and this balance is a great strength. The customers and competitors who could not remain profitable and who went out of business during the recession did not have this strength of balance. As we continue to find ways for sustained profitability, even in difficult conditions, we continue to grow stronger, stronger financially and stronger in character. The efforts and sacrifices we all have made to be successful say more about our company’s character than any numbers on a financial statement. We are looking forward now. We continue to look to the future and to look for ways to invest in opportunities for growth. There is a bright future here in Georgia for those bright new faces on page 11, and our customers, supported with our products and services, are going to build it! Thanks again for all you do for our great company. Jim Stephenson President, Yancey Bros. Co.

A Message from JimDear All: So, we take a pause from the pretty rough storm of the past few years to notice that…business seems to have calmed down and steadied out a bit. Look inside at our team: babies are being born, we’re hiring again, our safety record does seem to be improving, and overall, we’re looking forward, not backward. Helping you stay safe on the job

SAFETY FIRST!

Page 2 August 2011

For 2011, our Corporate safety objective is five (5) injuries per 100 employees. The chart at the bottom of this page shows our Total Recordable Injury Rate (TRIR) which is the rate of total recordable workplace injuries per 100 employees whether they resulted in days away from work or not. Through June our TRIR is slightly higher than our target in both the Machine and Engine divisions. We have seen improvements in our TRIR over the past 12 - 18 months and we continue to look for additional ways to meet our goal. Current initiatives geared towards continuing reductions in our injury rates include restarting our auditing Program for all sites -- OSHA, EPA and DOT. This will include two audits per year at each store by the divisional General Manager, along with audits by the Safety Manager and Loss Control Consultants. All stores should now have at least two employees that have completed 1st Aid/CPR/AED training during this past year. And a 10 hour OSHA safety training course was recently conducted to increase awareness and provide Managers, Supervisors and Lead men with a strong knowledge base of the minimum requirements for compliance. We were successful in achieving our At Fault Vehicle Accidents (AFVA) reduction goal, finishing at 2.50, a fifty (50%) percent reduction from 2009, and we recorded zero AFVA during the rolling 12-month period at the following Machine Division locations: Calhoun, Bloomingdale, Gwinnett, Kennesaw, Statesboro and Waycross. We also had zero AFVA during the same 12-month rolling period at the following Engine Division locations: Jefferson, Conley, Resaca and Valdosta. Finally, Congratulations to everyone for having an injury free month of July, a first for our company!

OSHA training was recently held at the Austell facility.

Mark Martin of Yancey Engineered Solutions and his family participated in two events sponsored by Smyrna Presbyterian Church (SPC). The first was an Annual Event called “Mission Work Camp” that involves more than 10 churches and 6 states. Church members come to the SPC campsite and stay for a week and work throughout the local community to benefit the poor, elderly and charitable organizations. This year there were over 16 work sites and over 100 participants. The second event Mark participated in was the 184th annual Camp Meeting of SPC. For this event, members of the church lease cabins and stay for a week enjoying morning and evening church services in the 136 year old tabernacle each day.

Don Engle has joined our Savannah operations as Parts and Service Supervisor. He came from R.B. Baker Construction, but also was a former employee of Carlton Co. before Yancey’s purchase of Carlton.

John Mitchum, Savannah Service Leadman, became a Granddaddy for the 4th time. Sara Hope was born on October 9th, 2010. John also received his 100-year hat last year on December 17th.

Rose Padgett (Service Administrator), formerly Rose Sloss, married Jody Padgett on September 18th, 2010. They honeymooned on a cruise to the Cayman Islands & Cozumel Mexico. They reside in Pritchardville, SC.

Tim Huffman’s (Service Operations Manager) Grandmother, Carrie Lorrine Hendricks, turned 100 years old on February 16. Tim, along with his family, traveled to Flint, Michigan to celebrate with her. The Hendricks family threw a huge party for her that had over 100 people in attendance. She received well wishes from President Barrack Obama, former Presidents George Bush and George W. Bush, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, Flint Mayor Dayne Walling and Swartz Creek Mayor Richard Abrams. Mrs. Hendricks was born in Lockport, Illinois, on February 16, 1911. When she was 3 years old, she moved to Peoria to live with her grandparents. Her grandfather was employed at the Holt Caterpillar Tractor factory. When she turned 13, she left Peoria and hitchhiked to Flint, Michigan, to live with her father and stepmother. She lived with them and her step sister Jackie until she married in 1930. On August 26, 1930, she married William Richard Hendricks, and they were married 47 years before Mr. Hendricks passed away in 1977. During their 47 years of marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks loved to travel. They traveled the scenic routes of the United States and Canada in a small camper including the greatest adventure she and Bill went on to Alaska via the back roads of Canada. Mrs. Hendricks has 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 13 Great-Great Grandchildren. She attends Bristol Methodist Church and is the oldest member. She enjoys getting together every Sunday at one of her children’s homes for dinner after church. Happy 100th Birthday Mrs. Hendricks!

Ron Spikes (Field Service Technician) and his wife Monica are expecting their first child in the spring. Ron also has a stepdaughter, Lacee, age 10. Craig Foreman (Service Supervisor) and his wife Karen, plus their children Justin and Whitney, went on a cruise to the Bahamas for Justin’s high school graduation. Ricky (Technical Communicator) and Karen (Service Administrator) Brown are having their seven grandchildren visit them this summer. Their grandchildren live in South Carolina, Chicago and Georgia.

Austell’s Cat Rental Store and Machine Division joined forces for a customer cookout on Friday, July 15. A large crowd of over 225 customers, plus Yancey Sales & Rental Reps, PSSRs and administrators enjoyed a break from the brutally hot day in the lobby of the CRS facility.

Featured at the cookout was the unveiling of the new Caterpillar CT660 Vocational Truck. This was the first opportunity for customers in Georgia to see the CT660 up close, and a large number of contractors and fleet operators were on hand to inspect the new truck. Thanks to Bruce Garner, Tim McCauley, Preston Smith and Garland Capps for handling all the food prep and cooking for the entire group.

Georgia is in the midst of a transportation funding crisis. We have under-invested in our transportation network for years and Georgia ranks next to last in per capita transportation spending. Reliable sources indicate that Federal budget proposals now being considered will result in Georgia receiving 30% less Federal gas tax funds than our current level. On November 6, 2012, Georgians will vote on a one-cent sales tax to invest in a specifically identified list of transportation improvements in each of our State’s twelve economic development regions. Each region’s election will be separate from the other eleven regions, and each region’s citizens will determine the fate of a new 10-year Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) on all sales in the counties within that particular region. The TSPLOST referendum was authorized by the Transportation Investment Act of 2010 (Georgia House Bill 277) which sought a means for Georgia to make the necessary investments into our transportation and highway systems.

How the TSPLOST Process Works Each of the 12 regions has assembled a Regional Transportation Roundtable, which is comprised of local government officials, such as County Commissioners and city Mayors. During the Roundtable meetings, local officials from

throughout the region have started creating and approving their district’s transportation investment list. Once the Roundtable has approved a transportation project list, the list will be put on the November 2012 ballot, and Georgians within each region will be able to vote on TSPLOST for their particular region. If approved by the voters within the region, the region would implement a one-percent TSPLOST for the set list of projects. By law, TSPLOST will sunset and cease to exist after ten years. A Citizen Review Panel will also be created in each district, which will monitor the optional sales tax by checking progress on the project list. This will ensure that the voter-approved projects are on time and within budget.

What the Results of TSPLOST Could Be If passed in all 12 regions, over $18 BILLION of new transportation funds would be generated state-wide over the 10 years, all of which will stay in the specific regions that passed and collected their TSPLOST funds. Those regions that do not pass a TSPLOST tax will not receive any funding from the new revenues. Revenues collected from each region stay in that particular region; there is no sharing of resources between the regions. $18 BILLION! To put that amount of money into perspective, it would be the largest economic

development opportunity in the history of Georgia. The 1996 Olympic Games was only a $5.1 Billion opportunity, and TSPLOST will bring in over 3 times as much revenue for our State’s transportation network. Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, who heads the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable executive committee, recently had this to say about the TSPLOST. “This really is a once in a lifetime type of event,” Johnson said. “What I really see this transportation investment act doing is helping our children and our grandchildren in the future,” he said. “We’ll be continuing to spend existing funds that come in, but this will give us a huge kick-start and do some catching up and put us in good shape for the future and quality of life.”

What is Happening Now, and How Can I Get More Information on My Region’s TSPLOST Plans? Currently, regional leaders are developing their region’s project lists which include transit, interstate improvements, arterial road

improvements, capacity and safety improvements, and sidewalks and bike paths. For more information on the TSPLOST, please check your local and regional news outlets frequently for developments. Call your local elected officials and find out who is representing you and your family on your Regional Transportation Roundtable, and open up a conversation with him/her. Let your elected officials know your thoughts on the future of transportation and highway funding in our State. We have included a page on TSPLOST on our www.VELAG.org website. On this page is a map of our State showing the 12 different Regional Economic Commission boundaries and links to websites for all of these Regional Commissions. Many of these Regions’ Planning Boards are conducting open hearing and citizen Question & Answer Forums specifically on TSPLOST, and you can keep up with the progress your region is making by visiting these sites. We have also included links to outside websites that will help guide you in the TSPLOST process.

Statesboro’s Machine Division Sales, Parts and Service Center serves a number of customers from across varied industries in eastern and southern Georgia. When Yancey purchased Pioneer Machinery, the Statesboro store was primarily a Forest Products branch, but construction, road building and municipal customers now join our logging customers in calling Statesboro their Yancey “home”. Located mid-way between I-16 and Georgia Southern University, our Statesboro store has excelled in customer relations and quality service for their area of the State. Service Supervisor Jason Sanchez and Parts Supervisor Andrea Clenny keep on top of all matters and make sure their store remains customer friendly. When you walk in the front door you immediately notice their well-stocked shelving full of Caterpillar toys & models, t-shirts, hats and other Cat® licensed products. This helps build pride not only in their store, but also in Caterpillar and Yancey Bros. Co. Although they are one of our smaller Service Centers, the Statesboro store isn’t afraid of stepping up to the plate, as evidenced by their completion of a Certified Power Train rebuild of an 826G Compactor for Toombs County this past Spring.

Our Griffin Power Systems facility, better known as Yancey Engineered Solutions (YES), is probably the most unique facility of any under the Yancey banner. Instead of machines being rebuilt and repaired, or trucks having their engines torn down and rebuilt, our YES facility is in the business of building custom-designed generator enclosures and fuel tank systems from scratch. In fact, the technical drawings, electrical designs, metal fabrication and product testing is all done on-site at this facility. The customers of YES are the Caterpillar dealers located across the world. Most Cat® dealers do not have the qualified staff or facilities to handle custom-designed fabrication, but Yancey has been able to fill the void with YES. General Manager Gino Klein and his staff make sales calls to Cat dealers across the globe, and we design our power generation enclosures and fuel tanks to fit their customers’ particular needs. A full-time staff of around 20 talented employees, plus seasonal Temps of up to another 20 fabricators, allows YES to meet deadlines and accept projects that many of their competitors simply walk away from. Providing quality service and customized products has allowed YES to become a world-wide player in the field of power systems generator enclosures and fuel tank systems.

BENEFITS UPDATE

WE HAVE A PROBLEM! Only 32.9% of our employees, age 35 or older, have gotten their wellness physicals during the last year. What if you never changed the oil in your car? What if you didn’t have a speedometer in your car and never knew how fast you were going? What if you had to trouble shoot a broken down piece of equipment that was 40 years old, and had never had any preventive maintenance? Enough said? Get your physicals! Yancey provides paid sick time to employees, so what’s your excuse for not getting a “preventive maintenance” check up? Maybe the reason some of you have not been getting your physicals is because you don’t have a family doctor, and instead go to the emergency room when you are sick or need to see a doctor. Would you rather pay $20 (Office Visit co-pay), $60 (Urgent Care Clinic) or $100 (non-emergency - Emergency Room visit)? That’s not a good use of your money or the company’s money. Plus, after almost every Emergency Room visit, they tell you to “follow up with your family doctor”. Take the time to find an in-network doctor, schedule a physical, and put that doctor’s number in your cell phone. Also, as a reminder, if you have AFLAC Cancer, AFLAC Accident, or Unum Critical Care insurance, you can get anywhere from $50 to $75 per year as a Wellness Benefit, simply by completing a Wellness Claim Form with AFLAC or Unum and providing proof of a preventive test or procedure.

News from our retired TEAM Yancey Members

THANK YOU BILL FRANKLIN Bill Franklin retired from the IT Department in Austell on April 15 after 29 years of service to Yancey Bros. Co. Before joining YBCo, Bill attended West Fannin High School, Albany Jr. College, North Georgia Tech, DeKalb Central, and served in the U.S. Army as a Data Processing Specialist. Throughout his school years, Bill enjoyed reading, basketball, tennis and fishing. Bill is married to Karla, has two children, three grandchildren and is an avid fisherman and sports fan. Bill started his career at Yancey at age 33 as a Lead Computer Operator. Immediately prior to his retirement Bill was our Lead Systems Operator. After his long tenure with Yancey, his presence in the Corporate office has been greatly missed. Bill always had a positive attitude and he was the type of employee that every manager wants and one that everyone could count on. He was dedicated to customer service, always available to everyone, and was committed to making sure the systems at Yancey were up and running every day of the year. Bill would spend countless late nights making sure that the systems would be ready to go for the rest of the employees the following morning. Since retiring from Yancey, Bill has been spending time with his wife and his grandchildren, and

working in his garden. Words cannot adequately express the gratitude of the company, fellow co-workers and customers, but the following is an example of what the employees of Yancey Bros. Co. have to say about Bill: “Bill was a dedicated, committed employee that enabled other employees to perform their jobs better.” – Dianne Ellerbee. “I miss our conversations when we would just meet in the hall and chat for a few moments before he had to rush off to help someone. He is one of the few you can describe as a genuinely good man.” – Glenda Woods. “Bill treated the employees of Yancey with the same sense of urgency and helpfulness as we treat our Yancey customers. He always took the time to stop and help even if on the way out the door . . . many times would even come back. Thanks Bill for your great customer service and friendship.” – Susan Popwell. “Bill somehow always had a solution for any technical issue you would present him with, and he

would work until the problem was resolved.” – Kevin Lane. Bill’s dedication to Yancey Bros. Co. and the people of Yancey has been inspiring, and we wish him the absolute best in the years to come. Here are some well wishes to Bill from his friends: “We sure miss seeing you – enjoy your retirement.” – Kevin Lane. “May your retirement be a phase in life that brings you relaxation, enjoyment, sunshine, time spent with loved ones, and lots and lots of ball games . . . and fishing too.” – Dianne Ellerbee. “We wish Bill all the best in retirement and look forward to hearing stories of all of the fish he’s caught. When I spoke with him recently, he told me that his wife has him working a lot around the house, so he may need to come visit us here at Yancey to take a break from all the chores.” - Steve Seidner.

“Bill, I am waiting to check out some of those North Georgia fishing streams with you soon. Wishing you the best in your retirement.” – David Popwell. “Bill, the sooner you take David fishing, the better. Sure do miss you.” – Susan Popwell. “Bill, we miss the consistency you always brought each and every day to Yancey. You were always willing to help whether it was your ‘job’ or not. I miss the fact that you never missed a deadline. But most importantly, we miss you and being able to call and just chat. I hope you are enjoying your retirement!” – Kim Parker. “I enjoyed working with you. Enjoy your retirement.” – Keith Thaxton. “Hi Bill, sorry I missed your retirement party. Enjoy your retirement, hope to see you soon at one of the retiree functions.” - your “old” friend, “Granny” Moerke.

Yancey Sponsors Georgia Southern University and the Society of Automotive Engineers

News & updates from our headquarters in Austell

CORPORATE NEWS & HAPPENINGS

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) organizes several collegiate design competitions for the purpose of providing future engineers the opportunity to get hands-on experience designing, building, testing, and racing vehicles. The competition is open to schools from around the world. In 2011, Yancey Bros. Co. sponsored two vehicles for Georgia Southern University (GSU). Georgia Southern participates in the Baja SAE and Formula Series of the SAE Collegiate Design Series. In the Baja Series, SAE engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain. In the Formula Series, engineering students are tasked to design and build a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is evaluated for its potential use as a production item. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules that are designed to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving. Yancey sponsored both the Baja car and the Formula car for GSU. In April, the Baja car competed in Birmingham, Alabama, at an event hosted by the University of Alabama. A total of 59 college teams from U.S., Mexico, and South Korea participated in the competition. The endurance course was 1.75 miles long and included a 150 yards of deep water. Out of the 59 teams, the GSU car placed higher than

schools such as Georgia Tech, Auburn University, and Cornell, at 12th overall. The Formula Car competed in Michigan at the Michigan International Speedway. Over the course of a three day competition, a jury of experts from the motorsport, automotive and supplier industries judged the design, cost and business planning of all of the teams to determine the best team and vehicle. Once the racing was finished and scores were officiated, the Formula car placed 19th out of 121 teams. For more information on the Society of Automotive Engineers please visit their website at www.sae.org .

Earlier this year the Austell Machine Service Center completed a Caterpillar Certified Rebuild on a D8R for DeKalb County. A time-lapse video camera was installed and pictures were taken every 15 seconds over a two month period. The pictures were then put together to create the 2 minute time lapse video. After the video was completed it was posted on YouTube and has been seen nearly 1,000 times. The video has been used as a sales tool for both Machine Sales Reps and PSSR’s when discussing machine replacement options with customers. To see the video on www.YouTube.com, simply search for “Yancey Rebuild” and take a look.
