A MESSAGE FROM JORDAN LEVY, CHAIRMAN OF THEERIE CANAL HARBOR DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

“The Story of Buffalo” is the story ofour waterfront and that story will betold at Canal Side this summer. Morethan 300 events, including concerts, programs for children, festivals andhistoric reenactments will highlightour community’s rich history, in thevery place where Buffalo began.

The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC), a subsidiary of

Empire State Development, is responsible for the development ofBuffalo’s waterfront. Our vision is to revitalize Western NewYork and restore economic growth to Buffalo based on our region’s legacy of pride, urban significance and natural beauty.

Over the course of the past year we have engaged in dozens ofmeetings, hearings and workshops with one goal: to listen towhat the public wants on the waterfront. Hundreds of ideaswere generated from those sessions and, in order to implementthem, ECHDC created a series of subcommittees with represen-tation from over 90 members of our community. The new features that you will be able to enjoy this summer—the QueenCity Water Ferry, an expanded Central Wharf, food at theInner Harbor and hundreds of events—are the direct result ofyour input.

In fact, your impact will be felt beyond this summer. Later thisyear, ECHDC will break ground on a series of public canals atthe former site of the War Memorial Auditorium and I amproud to say that those canals will follow the original alignmentof the Erie Canal as it came through Buffalo. One of the mainconcerns voiced by the public during our outreach efforts wasthe need for authenticity and we responded by going back tooriginal documents that detailed the path and dimensions of theErie Canal.

Whether you come to the waterfront to enjoy one of our “BuffaloPlace Rocks the Harbor” concerts, keep in shape with a yogaclass or simply to enjoy some of the best sunsets in the country, I want you to know that you are helping to shape our water-front, and in turn, the future of Buffalo. Our connection to LakeErie and our distinction as the terminus of the Erie Canal iswhat transformed a sleepy waterfront village at the beginning ofthe 19th century into an industrial powerhouse in the 20th, andthat same waterfront will be the key to determining our destinyin the 21st century.
