A MESSAGE FROM BETSY WEISMAN 1ST VP PROGRAMS
Programs and Workshops
Rita Verroca will be our Guest Speaker and Workshop Teacher for March. Rita’s exquisite hand
appliqué work has brought her wide recognition as an expert in her chosen technique. Quite
recently, Rita’s quilt design, “Album of Roses,” was featured on the cover of the August/September
2012 issue of Quilters Newsletter. We are very fortunate to have Rita coming to visit our Guild to
show us some of her work, and to talk about her inspiration and her technique in her lecture, “Fine
Hand Applique and Trunk Show” on Tuesday, March 11, 2013. On the following day, Wednesday,
March 12, 2013, Rita will teach her workshop, “Stitch a Classic Rose.” She will have patterns and
kits of some of her beautiful designs for sale at our meeting for those participating in the workshop,
and for others who may be interested as well; however, Rita says she will be happy to help any
participant work on learning the technique for any other project as well. Space is still available in
this workshop, so it’s not too late to sign up for the opportunity to learn from a master in the art of
hand appliqué!
Don’t forget to look ahead at our upcoming Programs and Workshops for April, May and June in the
corresponding sections of our Newsletter. We are very excited to be able to bring some very special
speakers to our Guild, and we think you will be just as excited to welcome them and learn about
each of their special areas of expertise as well. Come out and see Kathy McNeil in April, Sylvia
Davis in May, and Susan Brubaker Knapp in June, and please join in the fun at their workshops, as
well!

Potholder Exchange and Contest
Thank you to all who participated in the Potholder Exchange and Contest at our February 12th
Business Meeting. We had 19 potholders on display, contributed by 18 different participants, and
all of them were terrific! Everyone admired the potholders before our meeting, and then voting
took place during the break. At the end of the meeting, the results of the voting in seven
categories were revealed as follows:
Cutest – Janice Shelton’s Hen and Chicks
Most Beautiful – Kathy Hall’s Red Star with Hearts
Best Kitchen Theme – Linda Kramer’s Little Chef
Best Food Theme – Deborah Robinson’s Strawberry Pie
Most Practical – Marilyn Fredrickson’s Crossover Mitt
Best Use of Non-Kitchen/Non-Food Fabric – Tina Lockwood’s Miniature Half-Square Triangles
Favorite Potholder – Tina Lockwood’s Miniature Half-Square Triangles
Winners received a fat quarter. a candy bar, and a fabric flower to pin on as a corsage.
At the end of the meeting, those who brought potholders drew numbers and took home one of
them to keep. This was fun, Quilters! Perhaps we’ll do this again sometime.

A message from Carolyn Erratt, our new President!
As the newsletter editor every month I waited for Sandy to write her message and now I
understand why she was always the last article that I received, it isn’t easy to decide what to
write. I am humbled and honored to be the OCQG new President. I completed my first pieced
quilt in 2005 as a Christmas gift for my older daughter so compared to most of our members I
am a novice. I love to sew gifts for family and friends so it was only natural that I would
become a quilter. I love bright and bold fabrics, batiks, novelty prints, plaids, Civil War
Repros, solids and all other fabrics except maybe 1930’s so I can always make a purchase at a
quilt shop. I even buy 1930 fabrics because my “partner in fabric addiction” Betsy loves 1930
fabrics and I can always add to her stash too. I am excited for the upcoming year working
with a talented board as we approach CAMP, plan for the next SHOW and have wonderful
speakers and workshops.
I do need HELP just like a quilt that takes many fabric pieces to create a quilt that is QUILTED,
BOUND AND LABELED we need many quilters to create a successful guild. Please don’t hit
decline on your phone if you see my phone number I will be recruiting volunteers for small
jobs (the 2” square) as well as for the larger jobs (the 12.5” block).
See you at the guild meeting!
Carolyn
APRIL WORKSHOP---------------- Kathy McNeil Kathy has several “feathery” patterns to select from for the April Workshop. Come and join in the

Camp Watch-A-Patcher 2013
at Vanguard University, Costa Mesa, CA
July 7-11, 2013
Camp Watch-A-Patcher will be here in roughly 127 more days and I couldn’t be more
excited!!! There’s still time to get into a great class or two or three. Stretch yourself a little bit and try something new. The teachers we have at camp are excellent. Classes are in all price ranges and CWAP even offers FREE Sunday and Tuesday evening programs. If you’re worried about making a mistake in your class choice, rest easy. In all of the years that I’ve gone to camp, I’ve never had a class that I didn’t like. I eventually finish every project and like the results, even if it takes me a couple of years to get there. It’s great to be in a place with so many folks “speaking” the quilting language. And I love the extra added bonus that I don’t have to cook for the entire week. It doesn’t get any better than that. Check out the website www.campwatchapatcher.org for everything you want to know about camp!
I’ve heard a few concerns about not having the golf carts this year at CWAP. I just didn’t think that we could
afford them or the liability that goes with them. The campus is VERY COMPACT and FLAT. Parking is also close
to the classrooms. If you anticipate that you may need some help with your sewing machines, etc, please let
me know to help me with my planning.
CWAP always needs plenty of volunteers, but the #1 best thing that you could do to help with Camp is to TALK
ABOUT CWAP to your friends and fellow quilters. This is your guild and your camp. CWAP is definitely
something to be very proud of. We’re off to a good start and it’s going to be great fun.
If you would like to help with the Opportunity Basket cause, I’ll be collecting half yards, fat quarters, jelly rolls,
and charm packs that you would like to donate….tone-on-tones in all colors, patriotics, Asian, 30’s, and
brights are all things that can be used to make more baskets. A few friendships groups have already stepped
forward to donate a few baskets. Thanks to Suzette Rooker, who has stepped forward to offer her help with
the baskets.
Our March 26th CWAP meeting is cancelled as I’ll be in Florida for Spring break, but I’ll plan to provide an
email update to those who have previously attended. Our next CWAP meetingwill be held at the church on
Tuesday April 23rd at 7:00pm.
I LOVE CWAP!!!

Our new President, Carolyn Erratt's husband is going through some challenging medical issues.
Please keep Carolyn and John and family in your thoughts and prayers.
Congratulations to our Treasurer and Quilts for Vets Chair,
Tina Lockwood, and family on their latest addition! Their
new Guide Dogs of America puppy-in-training, Otto, is our
newest OCQG member! He joined Tina's family on Friday,
3/1/2013 at only 7 weeks old. You can follow his learning
adventures on facebook at "Otto's Ohana"! Otto will be
joining us at our meetings. Remember, when Otto is
wearing his vest he is training and should not be petted.
Please check with Tina before approaching Otto.
Welcome & Happy quilting, Otto!

A Note from Sandy
Thank you for the opportunity to be your president for the past two years! I truly enjoy the quilters in our
guild and am so happy to be involved! I hope I made a positive difference (and am sorry for anything that I
missed doing)! You have all made a positive impact on my life!
Thank you so much to Cheri Hansen and team (including the beautiful quilting by Cathy Farris) for the
sensational president's quilt! It means a lot to me and I will enjoy having it hanging in my house so I can
enjoy it for years to come! Thank you to Cheri (with an assist by Lyn Brown and Becky Sproal) for the
entertaining presentation of the quilt! Cheri will be a hard act to follow as Past President!
Please support your in-coming board: President - Carolyn Erratt; 1st VP, Programs - Betsy Weisman; 2nd
VP, Workshops - Becky Sproal and Marilyn Fredrickson; Treasurer - Tina Lockwood; Secretary - Pat Adair. I
think we will have a great team to lead us in 2013/2014 and I am looking forward to my position as Past
President!
Please think about what chairperson position you might be able to take in 2013/2014 to make our guild a
welcome and fun place to be. Let Carolyn know what you can do to help! It takes many volunteers to
make our guild great!
Thank you to all who generously gave of their time and supported me this past year! I am honored to have
been president and look forward to a wonderful new year with our talented new board!
