Union Pacific’s Salt Lake City Intermodal Terminal was built at a cost of $90 million in 2006; the state-of-the-art facility is designed to support the growing intermodal volume in the Intermountain West. Covering more than 240 acres, this expansive facility is capable of handling more than 250,000 annual container lifts. Four loading/unloading tracks were constructed to handle 60 intermodal double-stack rail cars. Five storage tracks were built to stage up to another 90 intermodal double-stack rail cars. The facility utilizes two straddle cranes to load and unload rail cars and one mobile packer to lift containers. Strategically located just four blocks away from Copper Crossing @ I-80 on 1100 South and 5600 West, this facility provides convenient highway access to markets throughout Utah and surrounding states.
When completed in late 2018, the new 840,000 square foot facility on 160 acres will be among the largest and most advanced processing facilities in its global package network. The new Salt Lake City Hub will process more than 70,000 packages per hour, outpacing any other existing UPS facility more than two times over.
UPS employees will be aided by new technology and automation that increase the accuracy of data collection for reliability and processing flexibility as packages route through the complex system of conveyors and advance across a maze of belts. Two automated processing areas will focus on smaller-sized packages, typical of today’s e-commerce purchases.
Companies locating in Copper Crossing @ I-80 will benefit from first in and last in status with UPS, allowing users to shift resources from transferring goods and materials to more productive tasks.

Infrastructure is in place now and sites are immediately developable. The project qualifies for Foreign Trade Zone status, and economic incentives may be available for specific types of use.
With a master plan including the $275 million UPS regional operations facility, Copper Crossing @ I-80 when completely built out will encompass more than 420 acres and boast nearly 6 million square feet of logistics, warehouse and manufacturing space.
