National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice

~ Our Mission ~

MISSION To act upon the needs, concerns and contributions of African Americans and other people of color as they relate to the administration of equal justice. THE ASSOCIATION The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice is a multi-ethnic, non-partisan, non-profit association of criminal justice professionals and community leaders dedicated to improving the administration of justice. The Association was founded as a vehicle by which criminal justice practitioners could initiate positive changes from within, while increasing opportunities for the average citizen to better understand the nature and the operation of our local, state and federal criminal justice processes. Membership and participation in the activities of the Association are open to all, irrespective of race, creed or country of national origin. For NABCJ members, criminal justice is more than just a career; it is a commitment to a fundamental aspect of our democracy – justice. PURPOSE The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice seeks to focus attention on relevant legislation, law enforcement, prosecution and defense related needs and practices, with emphasis on courts, corrections and the prevention of crime. Among its chief concerns is the general welfare and increased influence of African Americans and people of color as it relates to the administration of justice. NABCJ is designed to serve the needs of African Americans and people of color at all levels, including non-professionals, and professionals. Anyone may become a member of the Association. The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice encourages ex-offenders to join and contribute their perspectives to this unique and dynamic organization.

National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice

~ Our History ~

The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ) is a nonprofit, non-partisan, multi-racial professional association of individuals committed to the goal of improving the administration of justice at the local, state and federal levels. The genesis of NABCJ came to the University of Alabama during a historic conference on “Blacks and the Criminal Justice System” hosted by Dr. Charles Owens in February 1974. At the meeting, Dr. Bennett Cooper, then Director of the State of Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, called for the establishment of a permanent national organization that would focus on the goal of achieving equal justice for Blacks and other persons of color. The conference supported Dr. Cooper’s recommendation and created a committee to establish the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, Inc. Over the years, a considerable portion of NABCJ’s membership has come from the ranks of law enforcement professionals representing the entire spectrum of the criminal justice process. A major asset of NABCJ is its ability to attract a strong mix of members engaged in law enforcement, institutional and community corrections, courts, social services, academics, religious and community service. As a National Association, a substantial part of NABCJ’s strength and vitality can be found in its state and local chapters. Through the efforts of its members, NABCJ provides an action-oriented vehicle for initiating constructive change within the criminal justice system. With state and local chapters located across the United States, the association has shown consistent and positive growth. Through the coordinated efforts of its members, NABCJ provides thousands of volunteer service hours to the communities in which its members work and reside. NABCJ’s annual national, regional and state conferences provide in-service training in the field of corrections, management and leadership. All funds generated by the association are used to carry out official activities, e.g., educational programs, training conferences, scholarships, research and public awareness. All national, state and local officers, as well as the board of directors, are volunteers who serve with no monetary compensation.
