News Spring 2014 Engineering, Service, Integrity A Message From Joe I guess technically it is still spring, even though it is feeling more like summer. After this past long hard winter, it feels good to be getting hot enough for air conditioning. I suppose somewhere built into this past few months of temperatures is some metaphor or otherwise keen insight into the cycles of life – you know the part about working through the chal- lenges of winter to get to the renewal of spring and the joys of summer. For many of us, we did just come through the hard winter of the recent recession and we are now working hard to enjoy the fruits of a modestly improving economy. More recently I have been trying more to look at the broader perspective, the eter- nal focus so to speak. Perhaps that comes with becoming a grandfather for the first time or having your youngest graduate high school; perhaps it comes with faith. I spoke to a long time friend today. It was a brief conversation about the chal- lenges of bids going higher (great if you are a contractor, not so great if you are an owner) and employees leaving for bigger paychecks in the short term; we had both seen a few. It’s a cycle that those of us who have been in the industry long enough to have grandchildren (her name is Hailey by the way) have seen a few times before; and that leads to the benefits of a longer term perspective. Our goals at ESI are to look to build those enduring relationships, the ones that span the ups and downs of markets. So when you read this newsletter perhaps you will see news about a few friends or past co-workers. I am so glad to have some of our staff volunteer at Special Olympics and the Engineer in the Classroom con- test. We are very fortunate to be able to sponsor (again) the Traffic and Highway Engineers conference in Urbana – Champaign. So while I hope you enjoy reading about our open house or a couple of our recent awards, mostly I hope you enjoy reading about our people – a bit of a broader perspective on what we really work for. Thanks, Joe Chiczewski, President 1

A Message From JoeI guess technically it is still spring, even though it is feeling more like summer. After this past long hard winter, it feels good to be getting hot enough for air conditioning. I suppose somewhere built into this past few months of temperatures is some metaphor or otherwise keen insight into the cycles of life – you know the part about working through the chal-lenges of winter to get to the renewal of spring and the joys of summer.

For many of us, we did just come through the hard winter of the recent recession and we are now working hard to enjoy the fruits of a modestly improving economy. More recently I have been trying more to look at the broader perspective, the eter-nal focus so to speak. Perhaps that comes with becoming a grandfather for the first time or having your youngest graduate high school; perhaps it comes with faith.

It’s a cycle that those of us who have been in the industry long enough to have grandchildren (her name is Hailey by the way) have seen a few times before; and that leads to the benefits of a longer term perspective.

ESI Holiday Open HouseTo celebrate ten years of successful business, we hosted a Holiday Open House in early January. The event was held at the Scha-umburg Renaissance Hotel. The room was lively with guests and family members enjoying phenomenal food (those Chinese chicken salad bites, am I right?) and great conversation. True to our roots, we had a Fighting Illini tent set up, displaying our tail-gating outings and tradition. We even had people playing bags/cornhole and the competition was fierce. Throughout the room we had our award winning project boards on display to showcase our most recognized accomplishments. To round out the evening we had a slideshow playing that highlighted a decade of events and milestones. It was amazing to spend time and celebrate with the incredible people that have made ESI Consultants what it is today.

ESI Receives 2013 Best of Naperville AwardESI Consultants, Ltd was selected for the 2013 Best of Naperville Award in the Civil Engineers category by the Naperville Award Program. Naperville is not only a wonderful place to live in and work, but this amazing community that continually praises small businesses for their hard work.

The Naperville Award Program is an annual awards program honoring the achievements and accomplishments of local businesses throughout the Naperville area. Recognition is given to those companies that have shown the ability to use their best practices and implement-ed programs to generate competitive advantages and long-term value. The Naperville Award Program was established to recognize the best of local businesses in our community. The

organization works with local business owners, trade groups, professional associations and other business advertising and marketing groups. Their mission is to recognize the small business community’s contributions to the U.S. economy.

Each year, the Naperville Award Program identifies companies believed to have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These local companies enhance the positive im-age of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Naperville area a great place to live, work and play. Various sources of information were gathered and ana-lyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2013 Naperville Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity.

The 100th T.H.E. ConferenceThe 100th Illinois Transportation and Highway Engineering (T.H.E.) Conference was held March 25-26 this year at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This century held conference allows engineers, stu-dents, and community officials a place to gather and discuss issues surrounding the saftey and economic climate of Illinois and the country. ESI was excited to host a booth this year and to be a part of the traditional fish fry night.

Engineer in the Classroom CompetitionESI’s Dale Rasmussen was one of the judges for the Engineer in the Classroom competition at the Engineering Open House in Champaign, Illinois. Engineer in the Classroom is the product of Lockheed Martin and National Geographic. The program’s goal is to inspire young students into the engineering, technology, science, and mathematics related fields. “The program introduces engineering to 5th grade students. The competition involves Rube Goldberg contraptions that the stu-dents make out of junk they brought from home,” said Dale. “They end up learning about engineering and have fun doing it.”

2014 Special Olympics Spring GamesIn April, ESI’s Peter Balnius and Lee Gong volunteered for the 2014 Special Olympics Spring Games, hosted at North Central College in Naperville. Peter and Lee were at the Softball Throw event helping in the bullpen and marking distances. “The one thing I realized after the event was that I got to work along side people that were good folks and parents that had to be strong folks and the kids who were a testament to being strong and courageous,” said Peter.

2014 ACEC Merit Award and LuncheonIn February, ESI and 38 other Illinois firms were recog-nized for their excellence and award winning engineer-ing projects before a group of their peers, clients, and government officials at the ACEC Awards Luncheon. ESI won a Merit Award for our Interstate 294 at In-terstate 290/Illinois Route 64 project design and con-cept for the City of Northlake and the City of Elmhurst.

Project Background: The existing I-294/I-290/Illinois 64 interchange is a complex intertwining of Interstate expressways, with two strategic regional arterials and several front-age roads. There are numerous bridges, underpasses, ramps, connector roads, and traffic signals that facilitate the movement of traffic along and between the various routes. The current I-294 traffic exiting southbound

onto North Avenue via I-290 can only exit in the westbound direction. The current configuration results in truck traffic patterns that have created safety concerns in the local Elmhurst neighborhood. These existing traffic patterns are also suboptimal for the commercial and residential vehicles that want efficient access to businesses east of I-294 in Northlake.

The project consisted of traffic modeling, traffic data collection—including vehicle and pedestrian counts, or-igin-destination studies, transit review, forecasts, traffic safety studies, survey, public outreach efforts, proj-ect management, highway design, structural evaluations, environmental review, drainage design, report writ-ing, and agency coordination. The consensus solution was then incorporated into the EOWB EIS. ESI proudly teamed with their subconsultants C & M Associates, Compass Surveying Ltd., and Huff and Huff, Inc.
