A look at “compilations”
in RDA
with special reference
to Hebraica publishing practices
by
Joan Biella and Heidi Lerner Library of Congress/Stanford University Libraries

Notes:
We have not attempted to supply
headings for these example records
in RDA form, but have simply used
the appropriate AACR2 headings.
In the examples below, text in red
and in Times New Roman font is of
particular interest for our dis-
cussion; fields in turquoise italics
are optional in RDA.

6.2.2.10.3, LC practice
for the Alternative:
For a compilation consisting of two
or more but not all the works of one
person, family, or corporate body, in
a particular form, record a
conventional collective title
followed by “Selections.”
LCPS for 25.1 Related works:
For compilations of works, give an
analytical authorized access point
for the predominant or first work in
the compilation when it represents
a substantial part of the resource.
Disregard contributions such as a
preface or introductory chapter.
Generally, do not apply this core
element to anthologies of poetry,
hymnals, conference proceedings,
journals, collections of interviews
or letters, and similar resources.

9.2.2.10
If a compilation of works has
become known by a title
through use in resources
embodying that compilation
or in reference sources, choose
as the preferred title the title in
the original language by which
the work has become known
through use in such sources. If
no title in the original language
is established as being the one
by which the work is best known,
or in case of doubt, choose the
title proper of the original edition
as the preferred title.
This work was cataloged in 1980
under this title; it is therefore a
leaves-of-grass.
For convenience, we will refer to the
type of compilation “known by a title”
as a “leaves-of-grass,” in honor of
Walt Whitman’s work Leaves of Grass,
a selection of his poems first
published in 1855.
When lilacs last in
the door-yard
bloom’d,
And the great star
early droop’d in the
western sky in the
night,
I mourn’d—and yet
shall mourn with
ever-returning
spring.

consists of, or purports to be, the
complete works of a person, family,

tion consists of two or more but

Record one of the following

collective uniform titles. As this work consists of both
poems and anecdotes, “Works. Selections” may be
more appropriate.

Characteristics of Works
6.6.1.1 Scope
“Other distinguishing character-
Istic of the work” is a character-
istic other than form of work,
date of work, or place of origin of
the work that serves to differen-
tiate a work from another work
with the same title or from the
name of a person, family, or
corporate body.

Related Manifestations
This is a record for a reprint that
requires a 775 linking reference to
the record for the original mani-

The data in such a 775 field may
be copy-pasted directly from the

don’t have to spell out “p.,” and
you may leave alone the period
after “cm.”

bibliographic history 500 note
Is given instead of 775 fields. Note
that, although RDA provides ways
to construct elaborate linking
access points for earlier mani-

says “If the manifestation is a
compilation containing
reproductions of works not

give a bibliographic history note,
rather than MARC 775 / 776 linking
fields, about the individual works if
you think that information would be

As we noted before, LCPS
27.1.1.3 includes the statement
that if the manifestation is a
compilation containing repro-
ductions of works not pub-
lished earlier as a compilation,
give a bibliographic history
note, rather than MARC 775 /
776 linking fields, about the
individual works if you think
that information would be
helpful to the user.
In this case, the second work
is a reprint, but the first is not.
This time we opted out of

Under AACR2, this compilation
would have been entered under
the author of the predominant
work. The title might or might not
have been judged “adequate.”
Under RDA, an access point (700
12) With a collective uniform title
is required for the first, predomi-
nant work by Dovid Hoffman.
The access point for the second
work by Shalom Perl is optional.
The compilation Me-otsrotav shel
ha-magid was cataloged under
this title in 2009 without a collec-
tive uniform title. It is therefore
a leaves-of-grass and needs no
collective uniform title under RDA.

Heidi and Joan agonized over
this one for a long time, trying to
decide if the presence of Miler’s
brief comments meant this was
a “compilation” with all that that
would entail.
We decided that in this case the
material was just too slight,
acknowledged its presence in a
500 note, and made an access
point for Miler, to cover all
the bases.

It might be held that the
predominant work, Hotam ha-
melekh, is itself a compilation,
as it has two parts (named in
the 505). But perhaps these
could be considered “chapter
titles” or the like. There has
to be a judgment limit to all
this slicing and dicing.
Access points for the commen-
tary by Dov Fink and the book
of Esther are of course
optional.
