LOCAL metal bands Nokturnal andIronpriest are joining forces for anight of classic metal appreciation atAnnie’s Place this Saturday night.
Ironpriest’s Leon Spurling spoke tothe Centralian Advocate about thetwo-act gig, calling it a get-togetherwith some mates.
‘‘We’ve all known each other for 20years,’’ Leon said.
‘‘We basically grew up together so itwas getting a bunch of establishedmusos together to touch on songs weall grew up with and love.
‘‘It’s basically a cover band doing acollection of our favourite metal songs.
‘‘It’s a bit of a tribute to the songs Igrew up and loved, and the players andthe bands.
‘‘Get out to play some metal coversbecause there is a big metal followinghere in town.’’
You can expect to hear classics frommetal bands Judas Priest, Slayer,Metallica and Black Sabbath.
Leon said it’s good that the nextgeneration of metal lovers has takenthe flag.
‘‘It’s good (because) you’ve got thelikes of Pirate, Miazma andUncreation,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s an extreme style of metal, butit’s great. They’ve taken the flag, runwith it and done it better.’’
He recounted how Nokturnal’s CraigTilmouth started the first metal bandbefore Leon set up his own.
‘‘It’s an evolution and it’s great tosee,’’ Leon said.
Saturday night’s performance willbe a debut for Ironpriest, who areopening for the established act
Nokturnal, who are headlining DesertMusic Club at Todd Tavern on Mon-day night.
‘‘It’s a bit of a get it out there,’’ Leonsaid.
‘‘It’s all come together really well —it’s going to be a good night.
‘‘For me, personally — it’s good to putthe acoustic away for a while.’’
Ironpriest has also recruited acous-tic legend Gareth Dawkins as the leadsinger, which Leon said was a nicebreak for him as well.
‘‘Getting up there and screamingMetallica,’’ Leon said.
‘‘He’s a bit of an old schoolmetalhead as well so he was extremelyexcited to get involved when I floatedthe idea.
‘‘That’s the whole idea of Saturdaynight. Get the people together for thelove of the music.’’
n See Nokturnal and Ironpriest atAnnie’s Place 9pm tomorrow.
