A Listening and Speaking Lesson Plan

I. Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Improve their English pronunciation, rhythm and stress.2. Take away their fear of talking and;3. Have fun while learning.

Laptop and Projector Video clip of a tongue twister (Betty Botter’s Better Batter) Ready made handouts of short tongue twisters

III. Procedure

A. Pre-Listening and Speaking

1. Motivation

Start with a short inquiry discussion to see how familiar the students are with tongue twisters. Ask questions that will motivate them to participate and engage for the day’s lesson.

Now that the students have a frame of reference on the topic, show them a short video of a tongue twister example to further illustrate what is a tongue twister.

Take a look at this popular pronunciation tongue twister.

Betty Botter's Better Batter

Betty Botter had some butter,

"But," she said, "this butter's bitter.

If I bake this bitter butter,

It would make my batter bitter.

But a bit of better butter,

That would make my batter better."

So she bought a bit of butter –

Better than her bitter butter –

And she baked it in her batter;

And the batter was not bitter.

So 'twas better Betty Botter

Bought a bit of better butter.

B. During Listening and Speaking

1. Divide the class into pairs and then distribute the pieces of paper with the tongue twisters examples on it. Give each pair at least one.

2. Have the students read their assigned tongue twister once or twice aloud. Let them choose if who among them will read the tongue twister first and who will listen; the listener must take note if there are mispronounced words or if their partner had any mistakes. (During the reading session, they will notice the spellings, hear the sounds, produce them correctly when thinking about it, and practice correct pronunciation to be comprehended by their partner.)

stunk. The butter Betty Botter bought could make her batter bitter, so she thought she'd better

buy some better butter! Not many an anemone is enamored of an enemy anemone. Five fine Florida florists fried fresh flat flounder fish fillet. A three-toed tree toad loved a two-toed he-toad that lived in a too-tall tree. Red rubber baby buggy bumpers bounce. The sick sixth Sheik's sixth sheep's sick. The instinct of an extinct insect stinks. Growing gray goats graze great green grassy groves. Imagine managing the manger at an imaginary menagerie. Mix a box of mixed biscuits with a boxed biscuit mixer. A cuckoo cookie cook called Cooper could cook cuckoo cookies.
