Lonely Room

This song marks a turning point in the drama

as Jud Fry, a farm hand with suggested

learning difficulties, an obsession with

pornography, and a chip on his shoulder

takes a vow to pursue Laurie rather than bow

to Curley’s underhand encouragement to

commit suicide. Lonely Room not only helps

define his character but offers an insight into

his state of mind as he takes the decision

which leads ultimately to his downfall. That

the song was excised from the film version of

Oklahoma says rather more about the

political or commercial judgement of

Hollywood bosses - perhaps the subject

matter was deemed too difficult - than the

genius of Rodgers which is amply displayed

here.

The pedal G creates dissonance and harmonic

ambiguity from the very outset. Is the song in E

minor or some other key?

The narrow register of the melody helps define

Jud Fry’s psychological state at the beginning

of the song.. Out of context, the vocal line

seems to be in D major. But the

accompaniment presents a very different story.

The rocking motion which is stereotypical of

someone suffering a mental crisis is suggested

in the undulating bass and accompaniment

figures.

Page 5: A level - an overview

Notable character songsNotes on the music

• Listen to the song a few times – perhaps using different recordings. Include one from the film version as well as a stage production, to hear different interpretations. Then study the score.

• What do you think is the most salient feature of this music? Be specific: you might think it is the melody, or harmony, or rhythm. But what, in particular, strikes you as significant, bearing in mind the purpose of the song in the musical and the lyrics.

• What do you think the character is feeling and communicating through this song?

• Raw grief at the lost of allies in revolution?

• Warm reflections of friends no longer present?

• Dejection at the futility of lost lives?

• Admiration for his friends’ ideals and the ultimate price that they have paid?

• Guilt that he – unlike his friends – is still alive?

• Disillusionment with the rebel cause and horror at so many wasted lives?

• What sort of musical features can you confidently associate with your answers? Be as specific as you can. Saying “the minor key” will score zero points. “Variations in the way the composers uses the X chord in section Y and section Z”, referring to particular lyrics and driving your point home is the sort of answer expected.

Your tasks:1. Do lots and lots of listening!! Really get to know the flavour of Ellington’s pieces and his different performers.

Then complete the tables in the next two slides.

2. Match the following sentence starters and endings (use slide 5 to help you) as sentences. Please write them out

by hand and upload along with this ppt - it’ll get you used to writing out these kinds of phrases...

Ko Ko - The Intro

The key is... ...play parallel syncopated chords

The trombones... ...plays a crotchet-based walking bass line

The baritone sax... ...is tacet in the intro, then plays sporadic off-beat crotchets in Chorus 1

The double bass... ...Eb minor, a key that is rare in jazz of any era

The drum kit... ...plays a crotchet-based rhythm, which is heavy on the toms

The alto and tenor saxes... ...plays a low pedal note (on Eb), based on the rhythm of the head

The piano... ...are tacet, then play answering phrases (normally starting beat 2) in chorus 1

Year 12 Music - An Overview

Page 16: A level - an overview

Which image(s) best sum(s) up what you imagine

when you think of Mozart operas?

Page 17: A level - an overview

Let’s start exploring the Marriage of Figaro with some listening...

Pick one of the following extracts from the opera:

Now make some notes on the following questions:

1) Mozart’s operas often include a range of archetypal characters (we will explore these thoroughly as

we progress) - do you think this extract involves one or more of the following?

a) a stoic, regal, aristocratic lady

b) a young, smart, resourceful maid/servant

c) a whimsical, young male character (often sung by a woman)

d) an older, grumpy or mean female character, often a mezzo-soprano

2) What do you think is happening in the extract? What moods/emotions are being explored? (e.g

a comical scene, an aria depicting a character’s anger)

3) Can you describe what is happening in the music that led you to the answers you gave in the

previous questions?

Page 18: A level - an overview

Extension: video watching to up your grade…!

To understand where Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro sits in the wider field of opera, we will be looking at

where opera came from and where it went afterwards. Be a pro in our class sessions with this

background knowledge and understanding...

1. Watch some of these mini three-minute documentaries:

Origins of Opera

All the operas - this is about storylines might particularly appeal to you Jacob...

Why we need opera

I really like this one!!!

(Science of opera - might appeal to you, Shane! )

Explore these in your own time, we won’t quiz you on it, but it is a good way to get some background

knowledge, developing your wider listening and understanding.

1. Watch Howard Goodall’s Big Bangs - Opera

Tip: you could dip in and out of the programme, watching short bits at a time and making notes each time

INTERVALSMUSICAL FEATURES OF INTERVALS AND THEIR USES

Can you think of practical examples?

Make sure you understand each of the definitions.

How often do you listen to music, truly listening out for the kinds of intervals that are prominent?

This task does exactly that, and will be useful:- Your composition work- ‘Name the interval’ exam questions- Extended answers that involve description of melodic lines

Your task: complete the table on slides 2-3; mixed up answers are on slides 4-5

Interval descriptions (mixed up)

Can create an air of triumphant resolution when used in a perfect cadence. These stacked on top of each other can create quartal

harmony - often used in Science Fiction movies.

The lower interval of a major triad. The building block of an augmented chord.

Harsh dissonance which, if anything, creates upwards pressure towards a tonic. Used to create a chord that has a yearning,

wistful quality.

It can be written in two ways: diminished and augmentedDiabolus in musica: prohibited in renaissance sacred music.

Difficult to pitch when singing.

The essential interval in a cadential 1c chord in the major key.Used commonly in jazz chords. Major part of the dominant 7th.

Defines the tonic-dominant relationship. Used to suggest elemental forces and open spaces. Pure, bell-like sound, used in

tuning instruments. The second harmonic interval, and most important after an octave

Chromatic scale. Supertonic of the Phrigian mode, highly evocative of Spanish music. Used for chromatic colouring, especially in

ornamentation.

A series of these produce a scale often used to signify the exotic or supernatural

Distinguishes the minor key from the major. The building block of a diminished chord. Associated with melancholy music.

The essential interval in a Neopolitan chord.
