Courtesy photos Local author Bronwyn Harris, above left, will speak on her book Literally Unbelieveable: Stories from an East Oakland Classroom, Wednesday, April 19, at Cardinal Point. I t’s election season again, but I promise the voting will be a whole lot easier this time. There will be no con- tentious debates, no mud- slinging, no name-calling, none of the endless crazi- ness that many of us found so exasperating in 2016. And no promise to make us great again, as our Alameda Business Association is already “Greater”. However, I can promise you there will be change. GABA is putting forth its slate for the 2017-18 board of directors. We’ve nominated Dania Alvarez of Harbor Bay Realty to serve as president, joined by Ed Owens of Speed Pro East Bay as vice president, with Kathy Moehring of AEC Living remaining as secretary and Doug Waite of LexTax staying on as treasurer. As GABA values conti- nuity, much of the current board will continue to serve, with your approval, as members: Natalie Gelman, Ph.D., life coach; Ginger Schuler, Harbor Bay Realty; Jane Watson, Edward Jones; Teresa Weyand, Weyand Law Firm; Lorre Zuppan, branes llc; and of course I’ll still be around as well. GABA also values change and fresh perspec- tives, which is why we’re happy to add two new people to the slate: Bob Arzt, Polaris One; and Cheri Corfey, Zap Payroll. Neither GABA nor its board of directors is a closed club, so we invite you to join us and get involved with our mission to promote the Alameda business com- munity. Please write us at [email protected] if you are interested in serving with us, or if you’d like to nominate someone to join our board. In the meantime, keep an eye on your inbox, and look for the GABA board of directors ballot for 2017-18. Looking ahead It’s a tradition for GABA to install its board mem- bers at our June mixer-din- ner at one of our fantastic local restaurants. We’ve already arranged for a drone to take aerial photos for crowd comparison pur- poses. Will the turnout be better this year at Trabocco than it was last year at Acapulco? But long before that summer event, we hope to see you at the end of this month at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts, 1601 Paru St. from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the Thursday, April 27. For me, the timing couldn’t be better, as we’ll be there when Alameda on Camera is underway. This is the cen- ter’s annual event in which 48 photographers have 48 hours to capture images in one of 48 sections of Alameda. Great stuff. And in May, the Bank of Marin will be hosting our annual Brown Bag Wine Tasting event, always a good time.

Happy 2015, everybody! We in the Greater Alameda Business

Association haven’t made any life-changing resolutions — we’re still not vegans, and GABA is not going to pony up for a gym member-ship — but we are resolved to continue our commitment to serving and strengthening our business community.

And how will we be doing that? Glad you asked.

EventsPractically every month,

we offer members and guests the opportunity to network with business own-ers and neighbors. Often we include the opportunity to hear business experts and

community leaders share valuable information.

The 2015 GABA calen-dar starts with our mixer at Subpar Miniature Golf on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Subpar is located at 1511 Park St.

At the end of February, we’ll be at Alameda Landing to get an update from Catellus on progress at the site, and four weeks later in March we’ll be enjoying a sit-down dinner at Trabocco.

ResourcesWe’ve been making prog-

ress with our website, www.gabaonline.org and with our social media presence. You can now pay your $85 annual dues online (click on the

“Join GABA” link), and when you do, you’ll be automati-cally added to our business directory.

You’ll also be able to join or renew membership by downloading a form from the site and mailing us a check, or pay in per-son by check or credit card at one of our events or by coming to our office hours at the Bank of Marin, South Shore branch, the first and

third Wednesday of every month.

We’re also fine-tuning our Facebook presence. The GABA Facebook Group is changing from an open group to one available only to paid GABA members, and we’ve added a GABA Facebook Page (Like us now!) that we’ll use for official GABA news and postings.

AdvocacyIf GABA does have an

official resolution this year, it’s to speak out louder about issues and ideas that help our community. Specifically, we’ve started working to cre-ate a free shuttle service in Alameda that will not only bring riders to and from BART stations, but also serve all our residential and com-mercial neighborhoods.

We welcome any ideas you may have about a shuttle,

and of course we more than welcome anyone who wants to join us in this effort. Just drop us a line at [email protected].

Local author Bronwyn Harris, above left, will speak on her book Literally Unbelieveable: Stories from an East Oakland Classroom, Wednesday, April 19, at Cardinal Point.

It’s election season again, but I promise the voting will be a whole lot easier this

time. There will be no con-tentious debates, no mud-slinging, no name-calling, none of the endless crazi-ness that many of us found so exasperating in 2016. And no promise to make us great again, as our Alameda Business Association is already “Greater”.

However, I can promise you there will be change.

GABA is putting forth its slate for the 2017-18 board of directors. We’ve

nominated Dania Alvarez of Harbor Bay Realty to serve as president, joined by Ed Owens of Speed Pro East Bay as vice president, with Kathy Moehring of AEC Living remaining as secretary and Doug Waite of LexTax staying on as treasurer.

As GABA values conti-nuity, much of the current board will continue to serve, with your approval, as members: Natalie Gelman, Ph.D., life coach; Ginger Schuler, Harbor Bay Realty; Jane Watson,

Edward Jones; Teresa Weyand, Weyand Law Firm; Lorre Zuppan, branes llc; and of course I’ll still be around as well.

GABA also values change and fresh perspec-tives, which is why we’re happy to add two new people to the slate: Bob Arzt, Polaris One; and Cheri Corfey, Zap Payroll.

Neither GABA nor its board of directors is a closed club, so we invite you to join us and get involved with our mission to promote the Alameda business com-munity. Please write us at [email protected] if you are interested in serving with us, or if you’d like to nominate someone to join our board.

In the meantime, keep an eye on your inbox, and look for the GABA board of directors ballot for 2017-18.

Looking aheadIt’s a tradition for GABA

to install its board mem-bers at our June mixer-din-ner at one of our fantastic local restaurants. We’ve already arranged for a drone to take aerial photos for crowd comparison pur-poses. Will the turnout be better this year at Trabocco than it was last year at Acapulco?

But long before that summer event, we hope to see you at the end of this month at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts, 1601

Paru St. from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the Thursday, April 27. For me, the timing couldn’t be better, as we’ll be there when Alameda on Camera is underway. This is the cen-ter’s annual event in which 48 photographers have 48 hours to capture images in one of 48 sections of Alameda. Great stuff.

And in May, the Bank of Marin will be hosting our

annual Brown Bag Wine Tasting event, always a good time.
