III. ProcedureA. Preliminary Activity
Do you believe with the adage that the past should already be forgotten? Is
everything in the history worth remembering? People live with experiences. Every
portion of it leaves a mark in each of us no matter how small it seems. With that, I want
you to choose among the options I will provide. (Students now share thoughts and ideas
while the teacher writes them on the word verbatim.)
B. Lesson Proper

Okay. Then with these verbs, identify its
tenses. By the way, let us enumerate the
tenses of verbs.
If you will observe, most of the verbs on
the board denote past actions. This
morning, I will discuss the differences in
expressing some things that occurred in the
past.
How would you communicate an action or
condition completed ahead of another past
action? To answer this, let us study these
examples.
Who can read the first one?
In the sentence, we have two actions:
The ringing of the bell, and the entering of
students. The two actions, marked by verbs
had rung and entered, are both past
actions. Yet one of these two actions was
completed ahead of another. Here, the one
which happened first is the ringing of the
bell.
Please read the next sentence.
In this sentence, what are the actions?
You are right. Both of them happened in
the past yet one of them is completed
ahead of the other.
Who can read the last sentence?
Thank you. In this sentence, notice that
unlike the first two sentences, the word
Tenses are past, present, future, etc.
The bell had rung when the students
entered in the room.
The students had sat when the principal
came.
The sitting of the students and coming of
the principal.
The teacher had prepared her board work
before the students arrived.

used is before. Whenand beforeare time
expressions we are using with the past
perfect tenses of verbs.
Going back in the sentence, a gain we have
two actions. In the action of the teacher,
we have the word hadprior to the verb,
prepared.
Words such as hadis used with the past
participle of the verb to denote the earlier
of two actions.
So here, the presentation of the teacher
was completed before the arrival of
students.
Here are some points on past perfect tense:
The past perfect tense has twoforms:
a. The ordinary form: had + past particple
of the verb
b. The continuous form: had been + verb
ing
e.g. We had been discussing this great
achievement before he gave his suggestion.
IV. EvaluationOn the board is a cartoon based on a typical, Filipino community. From here,
construct sentences in the past perfect tense.
V. AssignmentGive the past perfect tense of the verbs.
