LATIN AMERICA

MEXICO CITY (AP)

Roberto Gomez Bolanos, the iconic Mexican come-dian who wrote and

played the boy television character “El Chavo del Ocho” that defined a generation for millions of Latin American children, died Friday at age 85.

Known as “Chespirito” (chess-pee-REE-to), he changed comedy in Latin America, taking his inspi-ration from Laurel and Hardy as well as Mexico’s other transcendent comedian who eventually made it to Hollywood, Cantinflas.

His two most famous charac-ters were “El Chavo del Ocho,” who lived in the homes of Latin America and beyond with his barrel, freck-les, striped shirt and frayed cap, and the naive superhero “El Chapulin Colorado,” or “The Crimson Grasshopper.” His morning show was a staple for preschool-ers, much like “Captain Kangaroo” in the United States.

His employer, the Televisa television network, which is the world’s largest pro-ducer of Spanish-language programs, did not give the cause of death.

He warmed the hearts of millions with a clean comedy style far removed from the sexual innuendo and obscenity-

laced jokes popular today. In a career that started in the 1950s, he wrote hundreds of television episodes, 20 films and theater productions that drew record-breaking audiences.

His prolific output earned him the nick-name “Chespirito.” It came from the Spanish phonetic pro-nunciation of Shake-speare — “Chespir” — combined with “ito,” a diminutive commonly used in Mexico that seemed natural for Gomez

Bolanos because of his short stature.“Nicknames are the most essential in

life, more valuable than names,” the actor said in 2011.

Born Feb. 21, 1929, he trained as an engineer, but he was dedicated to writing from a young age.

Talented both on the screen and behind it, he achieved smashing success in 1970 with the creation of “Chespirito,” a televi-sion show that included segments about “The Crimson Grasshopper.”

The goofy superhero dressed in a red bodysuit and hood with antennae that helped him detect danger miles away. He completed the outfit with yellow shorts and boots, giving him the look of a red bumblebee. The character, whose super-powers included shrinking to the size of a pill and dodging enemies, constantly repeated his signature phrases, “You didn’t count on my cleverness” and “All the good people, follow me.”

In 1971, Gomez Bolanos wrote and acted as “El Chavo del Ocho” (“The Boy from the Eight”), a reference to the channel that broadcast the show.

“El Chavo” proved so popular that reruns are still shown in multiple coun-tries in Latin American and on Spanish language television in the United States. Many Latin Americans, living under dic-tatorships during the height of the show, found his underdog triumphs heroic in the face of authority.

Gomez Bolanos is survived by his second wife, actress Florinda Meza, as well as six children from his first marriage and 12 grandchildren.

IMMIGRATION

By Jens Manuel Krogstad and Jeffrey S. Passel

At least four-in-ten unauthor-ized immigrants in 12 states will be eligible to benefit from

the executive actions announced Thurs-day by President Obama, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis.

Idaho, where 46% of the state’s unau-thorized immigrant population is eligible for deportation relief, tops all other states on this measure. Other states with at least four-in-ten eligible immigrants include Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

More than 5 million unauthorized immigrants are eligible for deportation relief under Obama’s executive action announced Thursday or the president’s 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which grants relief to young adults who came to the U.S. as children. The new executive action also expands the DACA program.

When we expand our analysis to those

eligible under both the new executive action and those already covered the pres-ident’s DACA program, it’s clear that many Western states, including those with the highest shares of unau-thorized immi-grants in their total population, are affected. With both programs combined, Idaho again tops the list, with about six-in-ten (62%) unauthorized immigrants now eligible for relief, the highest share in the nation, according to the Pew Research analysis of 2012 data.

Though Idaho has the highest share of unauthorized immigrants affected by Obama’s immigration policies, it has a relatively small population of unau-thorized immigrants. Idaho’s 50,000

unauthorized immigrant population is dwarfed by the 2.5 million in California and the 1.7 million in Texas. Both Cali-fornia (52%) and Texas (54%) are among the states where at least half of unau-thorized immigrants are now eligible for relief. Nationwide, 48% of unauthorized immigrants are eligible for relief under new or existing programs.

The states that have high shares of unauthorized immigrants who are eli-

gible for relief also have high shares of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico. People from Mexico account for two-thirds of unauthorized immi-grants who will be eligible for depor-tation relief under Obama’s new executive action, according to a Pew Research analysis.

In Nevada, where President Obama traveled Friday to talk about his actions, those newly eligible for relief make up 39% of the state’s unauthor-ized immigrant population. The state’s total of 210,000 is relatively small com-pared with other states. Nevada is also one of 14 states where the unauthor-ized immigrant population decreased

from 2009 to 2012, a trend driven largely by a drop in the number of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico.

But Nevada stands out on several measures of unauthorized immigration. Nevada has the nation’s highest share of unauthorized immigrants as a share of the state overall population (8%), the labor force (10%) and K-12 students with at least one unauthorized parent (18%).

Picture a little girl of eight years of age who has never been to the circus. Now imagine this

little girl, let’s call her Katrina, is invited to be a guest Ringmaster for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. It gets even better as Katrina and her family of ten are invited to sit ringside for the “Greatest Show on Earth!” Before the show starts, little Katrina has the opportunity to walk around on the circus floor, meeting performers and greeting animals. During the preshow event, one of the elephants creates a painting to the delight of the crowd. During the show, one of the clowns announces they have selected a winner of the elephant painting. And the winner is… Katrina!

High wire acts, clowns, camels, fireworks, flashing lights, motorcycles and loud music! To top it off, one of the main performers, named Mr. Boredom, asks for four young volunteers to join him center ring. Imagine Katrina’s surprise when he walks over to her and asks if she would like to join him. Like any first-time circus goer would do… Katrina says “yes!” Immediately all four children find themselves dancing with Mr. Boredom and then engaging in a fun filled game of musical chairs. One chair, two chairs, three chairs down and Katrina is still in the ring holding out hope that she will be the winner of this game taking place in front of a crowd full of cotton candy

filled circus goers. The music stops… and Katrina is in the chair. She is taken by the hand to the edge of the ring and is presented to the crowd as the New Circus HERO winner!

Now imagine that Katrina has not been out in public since February of 2012. This beaming, chatty and energetic young lady is a childhood cancer patient. Katrina Rose Salas was diagnosed with T cell Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) on February 27th, 2012. She was only six years old when she was diagnosed. Upon the start of chemotherapy treatment, Katrina developed a large mass tumor on her chest. This led to a two week stay in ICU.

This was followed by four months of intense chemo treatments in which time the tumor completely disappeared. On July 27th, 2013, Katrina had to undergo a bone marrow cord blood stem cell transplant. Unfortunately, she inherited several viruses with her transplant, which included chronic GVH (graph versus host diseases). The transplant took hold in Seattle Children’s Hospital. Katrina is now two years out post-transplant and she is doing great!

Rosa Tamez, Katrina’s mother, mentioned she first became aware of the Tri-Cities Cancer Center when Katrina needed to travel to Seattle for treatment. Rosa had just started a new job and was in need of fuel assistance. She was put in contact

with Tri-Cities Cancer Center Nurse Navigator Gretchen Saunders who provided the family with financial assistance to help ease their travel burdens. This summer, the Cancer

Center’s Foundation launched a new program called “Superhero Sacks.” Childhood cancer requires very specialized care, often requiring families to travel for treatment. Superhero Sacks are filled with gas and food gift cards to help support these families as they travel back and forth for care. Katrina was one of the first recipients of a Superhero Sack this past July.

When Feld Entertainment, the national promoter of Ringling Bros. “Super Circus Heroes”, contacted the Tri-Cities Cancer Center about a special opportunity to participate as

a Guest Ringmaster, we knew the perfect person to help us with the task… our very own Superhero, Katrina R. Salas!

RELIGION

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP)

Latin Americans born into Roman Catholic families have increas-ingly left the faith for Protes-

tant churches, while many others have dropped organized religion altogether in a major shift in the region’s religious identity, according to a survey released Thursday.

While 84 percent of Latin American adults report they were raised Catho-lic, only 69 percent currently identify as such, said the Pew Research Center in Washington.  At the same time, Protes-tants have gained members. About one in 10 Latin Americans were raised Protes-tant, but nearly one in five now call them-selves Protestant. About 4 percent of Latin Americans report they were raised with no religion, but 8 percent say they have no tie to any faith.

The survey, conducted between October 2013 and February 2014, out-lines the challenge for Catholic leaders in a region that was once a stronghold for the faith. Latin America still has about

425 million Catho-lics, or 40 percent of adherents worldwide, accord-ing to the poll. But the exodus from the church contin-ues.

The losses were part of the reason for the 2013 election of Pope Francis, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, who is the first Latin American pontiff. In most countries of the region, two-thirds or more respon-dents held positive views of Francis. But the authors of the Pew report said former Catholics are more skeptical of the pope than those still in the church, with only a majority of ex-Catholics in Argentina and Uruguay viewing him favorably.

According to Pew, the percentage of

Catholic-born people flocking to Protes-tant churches has steadily grown in recent decades in nearly all 18 countries and on the island of Puerto Rico where the poll was conducted. “In most of the coun-tries surveyed, at least a third of current Protestants were raised in the Catholic Church, and half or more say they were baptized as Catholics,” the authors of the

report said.Former Catholics who have

embraced Protestantism most fre-quently cited a desire for a per-sonal connection with God for leaving their original faith. Others said they wanted a different style of worship or a church that helps its members more.

The most Catholic countries were Mexico, with 81 percent Cath-olics and 9 percent Protestants, and Paraguay, with 89 percent Catho-lics and 7 percent Protestants.

Uruguay emerged as Latin America’s most secular country, with 37 percent of people saying they were atheist or agnostic or had no religious affiliation. Just

42 percent of people from Uruguay say they’re Catholic.

The more than 30,000 face-to-face interviews were conducted in all of Latin America’s Spanish-speaking countries except Cuba.  The margin of error varies by country, ranging from plus or minus three percentage points to four points.

In this July 27, 2013 file photo, Pope Francis waves to people from his popemobile in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

IMMIGRATION

WASHINGTON (AP)

Two presidents have acted uni-laterally on immigration — and both were Republican.

Ronald Reagan and his successor George H.W. Bush extended amnesty to family members who were not covered by the last major overhaul of immigration law in 1986.

Neither faced the political uproar widely anticipated if and when President Barack Obama uses his executive author-ity to protect millions of immigrants from deportation.

Reagan’s and Bush’s actions were con-ducted in the wake of a sweeping, bipar-tisan immigration overhaul and at a time when “amnesty” was not a dirty word. Obama is acting as the country — and Washington — are bitterly divided over a broken immigration system and what to do about 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally.

Obama wants to extend protection from deportation to millions of immi-grant parents and spouses of U.S. citizens

and permanent resi-dents, and expand his 2-year-old program that shields immi-grants brought ille-gally to this country as children.

A tea party-influ-enced GOP is poised to erupt, if and when Obama follows through on his promise.

“The audacity of this president to think he can com-pletely destroy the rule of law with the stroke of a pen is unfathomable to me,” said GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa, an outspoken opponent of relaxing U.S. immigration law. “It is unconstitutional, it is cynical, and it violates the will of the American people.”

Some Republicans have even raised the possibility of impeachment.

Here’s a timeline of past actions:

—1986. Congress and Reagan enacted a sweeping overhaul that gave legal status to up to 3 million immigrants without authorization to be in the country, if they had come to the U.S. before 1982. Spouses and children who could not meet that test did not qualify, which incited protests that the new law was breaking up families.

—1987. Early efforts in Congress to amend the law to cover family members

failed. Reagan’s Immigration and Natural-ization Service commissioner announced that minor children of parents granted amnesty by the law would get protection from deportation. Spouses and children of couples in which one parent quali-fied for amnesty but the other did not remained subject to deportation, leading to efforts to amend the 1986 law.

—1989. By a sweeping 81-17 vote, the Senate in July voted to prohibit deporta-tions of family members of immigrants covered by the 1986 law. The House failed to act.

—1990. In February, President George H.W. Bush, acting through the Immigra-tion and Naturalization Service, estab-lished a “family fairness” in which family members living with a legalizing immi-grant and who were in the U.S. before passage of the 1986 law were granted protection from deportation and autho-rized to seek employment. The adminis-tration estimated up to 1.5 million people would be covered by the policy. Congress in October passed a broader immigration law that made the protections permanent.

Two GOP presidents acted unilaterally on immigration

SPORTS

SANTA CLARA, California (AP)

Ri c h a r d S h e r m a n once again

had the game’s most important play during the Seahawks-49ers matchup, just 10 months after stop-ping a potential game-winning touch-down during the NFC Championship game that sent Seattle to the Super Bowl.

Sherman set up the game’s only touchdown with a key defensive play and then got a second interception on a drive late in the game when the 49ers were finally starting to mount some offense, sealing the 19-3 win for the Seahawks on Thursday night.

The win ends a winless streak for the Seahawks of five games when playing on the road against San Francisco.

The brash cornerback was extremely confident throughout the game, blowing kisses to the opposing fans, signaling them to stay quiet and then waving them goodbye as many of them left game early.

Steven Hauschka connected on four field goals and the aggressive Seahawks defense kept both Colin Kaepernick and Michael Crabtree in check. Even after committing 14 penalties for 105 yards, among them an offensive pass interfer-ence call that nullified a touchdown, Seattle was still able to improve their

record to 8-4.Russell Wilson passed for 236 yards and

easily outplayed Kaepernick, who had one of his worst performances as a pro for the 49ers (7-5).

“My team is united, we’re all friends. Winning in this stadium is not easy,” Wilson said. “It’s not easy beating NFC teams, and we’re excited about this oppor-tunity.”

After getting his second interception, Sherman raced towards the sidelines to taunt the few fans that still remained in the stadium. The Seahawks won by the same score that they beat Arizona last week, the first place team in the NFC West.

“Some of their fans were very vulgar with us before the game, we shouldn’t have to deal with that,” Sherman said.

Seattle now travels to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles in yet another crucial game.

Sherman shines in big Seahawks win over 49ers

SEATTLE, Washington (AP)

Juninho scored an away goal on Sunday, and that was all it took for the Los Angeles Galaxy to beat out

the Seattle Sounders on their way to the MLS Cup final, where they’ll face off with the New England Revolution.

Clint Dempsey scored a goal and assisted on Brad Evans’ goal during the first half, with which Seattle took an early lead. However, Juninho’s goal brought the aggregate score in the series to 2-2, with the away goal being the tie-breaker that

the Galaxy needed to advance. It will be the ninth time that the Galaxy

play in the MLS Cup final. The away goal tie-breaker rule had not

been used in previous MLS playoffs. It was a new rule set for this season. During the Western Conference final, it was the Brazilian’s goal that was the difference.

The Galaxy will be seeking to win their fifth MLS title, in a season that will see their star player Landon Donovan retire when it is all said and done.

Los Angeles will host New England in the final match this Sunday.

Sounders beat Los Angeles, but fail to reach final

I am not an expert in soccer, far from it, but I do enjoy watching my teams play, and when possible, watching the so-called giants of the game.

Lately I’ve taken it upon myself to watch one of the world’s favorite teams. I’ve been watching Real Madrid games because my countryman, Keylor Navas, is one of their goalkeepers.

But, much to my regret I must say that this team is tarnished. With every match that I watch, I see the kicks from their defenders, the dives from their “stars” and the “errors,” if not horrors, from the ref-erees. All that combined with the signing and ruining of top players.

“When the option came up to sign with Madrid, I didn’t hesitate at all,” Mexico’s Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez said. He said that it had always been his dream, to be on the best team in the world. However, he had no idea that above his aspirations were the etched in stone ways of the club.

One only has to look at Navas as well, a fan-tastic world-class goalkeeper, who also said similar things, about the best team in the world…blah, blah, blah…there he is sitting on the bench the majority of games. We need only to remember the irreplaceable Raul, or Di Maria, or so many other players – both homegrown and major signings brought to the Bernabeu. All of them spoke so highly about the club, but for whatever reason, with the passage of time, they were all shown the back door.

I don’t find it fair to call this club the best team in the world, when its acts and style of play leave much to be desired.

Have a happy week, and God bless!

Real Madrid…the best?

Slow down on mortgage acceleration

Dear Dave,

Should I pay a nominal fee to be enrolled in a mortgage accelerator program? — Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,

No, you should not. Mortgage accelerator programs are similar to the biweekly mort-gage deals floating around out there. Paying on your mortgage biweekly is fine. Paying for the privilege is not.

In the biweekly mortgage program, you make a half-payment every two weeks. By doing this you will pay off the typical 30-year note in about 22 years. It works because there are 26 two-week periods in a year, and 26 half-payments equals 13 whole payments. It pays off your mortgage early because you’re making an extra payment every year. That’s what’s doing it. There’s nothing magical about every two weeks; it’s the fact that you’re paying extra principal.

If you’re just now taking out a mortgage and your lender can do a biweekly setup at no cost, then that’s great. Take them up on the offer. But we’re not going to pay them an additional fee so you can make extra pay-ments on the principal. That’s just stupid! — Dave
