BY TIM ROWE | @ANZ_NEWSCONTACT TIM AT THE SALES @ROWE_TIM

    Magic Millions was last night

toasting the setting of a new

    benchmark set of figures for

its major auction of the year,

the Gold Coast Yearling Sale, after a $1 million I

Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) colt brought to

an end a massive five-session Book 1 offering.

The company had gambled in November

by compiling a bigger catalogue this year and

while conventional wisdom suggests that the

average and median should go down as a result

of the increased numbers, that was not the case.

As the Book 1 aggregate closes in on the $200

million mark - it was at $197,240,000 late last

night - at an average of $253,000 with 761 horses

sold, Magic Millions’ managing director Barry

Bowditch was emotional when he reflected

on the events which had unfolded over the

previous five days. Continued on page 2>>

    "It’s overwhelming. It's special what

we’ve achieved. To work as we’ve done in the last six months to put this

catalogue together, and then to have the restrictions and the roadblocks

put in place over the last month, has put this team under immense

    pressure,” Bowditch revealed last night.

“To pull this off to the level we have is something we didn't expect. It

was very special. This has been crazy, so to do it and to almost gross $200

million, we aimed to do that for Book 1 and Book 2, and to get there in

    Book 1 is amazing.

“To average a quarter of a million when we have increased our

numbers and to clear the same number.”

Bowditch praised the vendors who had backed Magic Millions to

deliver a competitive January sale when many were questioning whether

the demand would be there this year given the pandemic has been causing

    havoc for nearly 12 months.

“The vendors have sent their very best yearlings that are ready for this

sale. The buyers have recognised how we've selected the catalogue,” he

    said.

“We’ve had quality horses from Lot 1 to Lot 962. These buyers have

got a lot to race for, prize-money is great, the race series is a fantastic fillip.

They really got behind these horses and it really boosted the prices.

“This was the injection to the industry to give the confidence that the

market is in a great place. I'm proud that we have been able to provide a

benchmark for the rest of the yearling sales series.”

Neasham jumps over hoops to ensure she lands her Vinnie colt

Last night’s post-Magic Millions race day session of 192 lots culminated

in I Am Invincible’s first million-dollar lot sold for the week, bringing the

total number of seven-figure yearlings to 12, after rookie trainer Annabel

Neasham and her racing manager Brian McGuire signed for the stunning

    grey son of Group

    2-winning, Group

    1-placed mare Villa

    Verde (Not A Single

    Doubt).

    Warwick Farm-

    based Neasham did

    not expect to be able

    to attend the Magic

    Millions sale in

    person, so performed

    a significant amount

of legwork in on-farm inspections, but she and a few other Sydney-based

buyers were granted government exemptions to be on the Gold Coast

    with strict protocols in place.

“I saw him twice on the farm at Kia Ora and I loved him the first

time and when I went back for my second look, I loved him even more,”

    Neasham said.

“Look, I didn’t think I was going to get up here (to the Gold Coast), so

I had worked pretty hard on trying to get a couple of people together to try

and secure him, so it is a bonus to get up here and when I saw him again I

    loved him even more.

“It has been a long week waiting for him to come through on the final

night, so I am delighted to get him, especially being from a great farm in

    Kia Ora.

“(Kia Ora’s) Ananda Krishnan has a couple of horses with me and has

really supported me, so it is great to get a really exciting colt and hopefully

we can come back here next year with him.”

Catalogued as Lot 934 and the second seven-figure lot sold by Kia Ora

Stud this week, the colt is the fourth foal for Villa Verde, a three-quarter

sister to this season’s Group 2-winning three-year-old Doubtland and

    Listed winner Pretty Fast.

“This colt was top-class, we loved him from the day he came in and he

has just been perfect ever since. He's really gone down well at the sales.

He's behaved himself immaculately, and the very best to Annabel and the

team going forward,” Kia Ora Stud’s Shane Wright said.

“Annabel has started off amazingly, and it’s only going to continue if

    she buys quality like that.”

  • Neasham has become the primary

trainer for Tony Fung and Phoenix Thoroughbreds, the leading buyer at

the sale by aggregate with 19 lots for a total spend of $11,645,000.

Among the Fung-Phoenix haul was the last yearling by Redoute’s

Choice (Danehill) to be offered through a Magic Millions’ January auction.

The Baramul Stud-consigned colt, who was catalogued as Lot 880 and

made $370,000, was perhaps fittingly sold by Gerry Harvey, who has bred

12 of the late champion stallion’s 177 stakes winners, headed by Group 1

    winners Lotteria and Royal Descent.

Neasham said the support she had received since leaving Ciaron

Maher and David Eustace to go out on her own was “pretty surreal”.

“This is the first sale that I have been at as a trainer in my own right

and to be given that support, I am just so grateful to the Fung family and to

Phoenix as well, and I can’t wait to get some of those nice big colts into the

stable,” said Neasham who has bought ten horses under her own name

    in Book 1.

Reflecting on any added pressure she may now be under having

completed a host of big purchases, Neasham said: “There’s a little bit, but

we can try and cope with that. We’ve got a good team, we’ve started off

well, so we will try to continue that.”

Spread of buyers leads to strong marketMaher and Eustace, meanwhile, were also a significant part of the

buying bench in Book 1, spending $11.27 million on 37 yearlings.

The vendoring honours went to Arrowfield Stud which sold 45

yearlings at an average of $325,889 for $14,665 million while Emirates Park

sold six lots, including two lots

for $1.8 million and $1.2 million,

    for an average of $596,667.

    “It’s a huge list of

buyers, when you look at the

    syndicators, you've got the

    individual owners, you've got a

big, big group of trainers, and

you've got the (colts) funds and

    farms getting in behind these

    horses,” Bowditch said.

“It's a big deep list and everyone has played their part. I'm speechless.”

The leading sire by aggregate was I Am Invincible (44 lots sold

for an average of $544,545) over champion stallion Snitzel (Redoute’s

Choice), who had a colt top the auction at $1.9 million on Tuesday,

while the leading sire by average (three or more lots sold) was Not

A Single Doubt who had 17 yearlings change hands at an average of

    $597,647.

The leading first season sire by aggregate was Yarraman Park Stud’s

Group 1-winning sprinter Hellbent (I Am Invincible) and by average was

Cambridge Stud shuttler Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) who had three

yearlings sell for an average price of $506,667.

Magic Millions will conduct a two-day Book 2 sale starting at 2pm

today before the final day begins at 10am tomorrow.

18 for Star WitnessAim (3 g ex Vintage Strike by Smart Strike)

provided Widden Stud stallion Star Witness

(Starcraft) with his 18th individual stakes

winner when he took out the $2 million Magic

Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold

Coast yesterday. Aim led home the Star Witness

quinella, defeating Amish Boy by one and three-

quarter lengths, with Away Game (Snitzel) two

and a half lengths behind the winner in third.

Star Witness, who has one elite-level winner to

his name courtesy of Global Glamour, stands

for a service fee of $22,000 at Widden.

Eleven Eleven goes back-to-back at MillionsEleven Eleven (4 g Fastnet Rock - Smokin’ Alice

by Smoke Glacken) scored back-to-back Magic

Millions wins with a determined performance

in yesterday’s $1 million Magic Millions Cup

(RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast. The Greg

    Hickman-trained gelding benefitted from

Alligator Blood’s (All Too Hard) disqualification

in last year’s Magic Millions 3YO Guineas

to take first place and he scored his second

success at the January raceday when holding

off the late challenge of Soxagon (Rocker) by

a head. Discharged (Snitzel) finished a further

head behind in third. The son of Fastnet Rock

was purchased by Hickman for $230,000 at

the 2018 Gold Coast Yearling Sale and was

partnered by a delighted Nash Rawiller in

yesterday’s success. “What they’ve done with

this carnival is amazing, with the lead-up to it

last week, it gives you a taste of what is to come

and everyone gets an opportunity to enjoy the

week and support racing,” Rawiller said. “He’s

    a lovely horse and he’s just won a million-dollar

race, it’s brilliant. Greg’s done a great job with

him, it’s a shame he can’t be here but he’ll be

rapt. He can keep coming back for the next two

or three years and pinching this great money.”

Jonker claims Magic Millions SnippetsThree years after being well fancied for the

Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m), Jonker

(Spirit Of Boom) can finally claim the title of a

Magic Millions winner. Ridden by Jim Byrne,

Jonker led most of the way to win the Magic

Millions Snippets (1200m) by a length from

Exhilarates (Snitzel), with Roheryn (Lonhro) a

half-length away third. Jonker finished last of

16 having been checked in the 2YO Classic and

a period in the wilderness followed, before he

made his way to Tony Gollan and rediscovered

winning form. The five-year-old broke the

1200-metre track record at Doomben when he

won the Keith Noud Quality (Listed, 1200m)

in November, prompting Gollan to target the

Magic Millions Snippets. "I didn't know what to

expect with this horse when he came to me but

when he broke the track record at Doomben

I knew we had a really serious horse on our

hands," Gollan said. "I was so disappointed

when he got beaten at his second run for us

(the George Moore Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)) but

this was a real target race. There's a real sense

of fulfilment winning this race today and he's a

proper sprinter. He can go on and win a good

    race this year."

Krone lands Fillies and MaresGollan made it a winning double 35 minutes

after Jonker’s success when Krone (Eurozone)

stormed home to win the $1 million Magic

Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m). Ridden

superbly by Ryan Maloney, $31 chance Krone

weaved between runners in the straight and

made a late lunge to win by a half-head from

the $2.80 favourite Athiri (Lonhro), who was

being hailed the winner when she hit the lead

inside the final 150 metres. "I just knew this

mare's been going super all prep and I'm just

so proud of her," Gollan said. "Here today was

where we were always going to try to peak her

and it's worked out perfectly." Krone will be

spelled and aimed at the Tattersall's Tiara (Gr

    1, 1400m) during the winter carnival. "She's

a winter carnival mare and that will be her

    swansong," Gollan added.

Black On Gold takes out SubzeroThe Chris Waller-trained Black On Gold

(Sebring) landed a Magic Millions blow at

his fourth attempt with a tenacious victory in

yesterday’s $1 million Magic Millions Subzero

(2400m) at the Gold Coast. The seven-year-

old – who was runner-up in the same race

last year, third in 2019 and sixth in 2018 – was

aided by a patient ride from Brenton Avdulla,

who latched onto $3.70 favourite Ballistic Boy

(Smart Missile) in the run. Once entering the

straight, the gelding showed a sharp turn of

foot to defeat Parry Sound (Pierro) by a neck,

with Elaborate (Excelebration) a further length

behind in third. “He’s such a pleasure to ride

and he responds well to me,” Avdulla said.

“Chris Waller has such a knack with these

horses, a lot of credit has to go to him and also

to the owners, BK Racing, who do a great job

and are big supporters of mine.” Black On Gold,

who was purchased for $200,000 by BK Racing

and Breeding at the 2015 Gold Coast Yearling

Sale, has now won more than $1.5 million in

    prize-money and bonuses.

Newsreader delivers for connectionsNewsreader (Press Statement) landed

connections a handsome payday with a

    dominant victory in Australia’s richest

maiden, the $250,000 Magic Millions Maiden

Plate (1200m), at the Gold Coast yesterday.

Newsreader, who was a $170,000 purchase by

Champion Thoroughbreds at the 2019 Magic

    Millions Yearling Sale, responded impressively

when Brenton Avdulla asked the three-year-old

to quicken inside the final stages and she put

two and a quarter lengths between herself and

runner-up Lady Of Luxury (Criterion), with Hey

Big Splenda (Rich Enuff) a further short-head

behind in third. “Brenton got into a beautiful

position just following one of the other chances,

I think the biggest problem in these races is that

you can sometimes get cluttered up and he

was never going to be from there,” trainer John

O’Shea said. “She’s a very fit filly and once she

got clear she pinned her ears back and raced

away, so it was good. We were happy with her

but it’s all about doing things right on raceday

and once she was well behaved behind the

gates and down in the stalls it gave us a bit of

    confidence.”

First Magic Millions success for O’BrienParadee (Epaulette) provided Melbourne Cup-

winning trainer Danny O’Brien with his first ever

win on Magic Millions raceday with an impressive

victory in yesterday’s $250,000 Magic Millions

Quality (1800m). In a repeat performance of

last Saturday’s TAB Wave (1800m) at the Gold

Coast, Paradee comfortably defeated the Bjorn

Baker-trained Frosty Rocks, who ran into fourth.

So Dapper (So You Think) was two and three-

quarters lengths behind Paradee in second,

with Wapiti (Love Conquers All) a further three-

quarters of a length back in third. O’Brien said

Paradee, who was purchased by owner Robert

Anderson for $240,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions

Yearling Sale, had thrived since travelling to

Queensland. “She won the big Wave race here

last week and she came out of it super so we were

happy enough to run her again,” O’Brien said.

“The weights and measures were against her

today but she’s actually won by further so she’s a

mare that’s in great form and she’s really thrived

with the trip up here. We didn’t give her a hard

spring, she ran four times and then she’s been

down to Thirteenth Beach since then and just

    ticking over.”

The Odyssey takes thrilling finale Stephanie Thornton scored the biggest win of her

burgeoning career when she steered The Odyssey

(Better Than Ready) to victory in yesterday’s $1

million Magic Millions QTIS Handicap (1300m),

the final race at the Gold Coast. The 21-year-old

delivered a textbook ride, trailing the leading

pair before peeling out and dashing clear in the

straight. The Kelly Schweida-trained filly defeated

the fast-finishing Stuttering (Love Conquers All)

by a nose, with Boomtown Lass (Spirit Of Boom)

a further neck behind in second. An emotional

Thornton said the horse, aboard whom she

has now won several feature races, had quickly

become one of her favourites. “He’s been so

brilliant to me, I think I’ve won seven races on

him,” Thornton said. “To be honest, I was gutted

on the line because I thought I’d got beat but he’s

tough and he’s got a will to win. 1300 metres sees

him out so that was our biggest query today but he

    just wanted it too bad.”

Fabergino flies again at FlemingtonStar Perth mare Fabergino (6 m Maschino -

Miss Razyana by Danzero) again showed her

predilection for the Flemington 1000 metres

as she took out the Kensington Stakes (Listed,

1000m) to gain an entry in the Black Caviar

Lightning (Gr 1, 1000m) next month. The grey

made it three from three over track and distance

with a comfortable one and a quarter length

defeat of Sword Of Mercy (Sebring). The aptly

named $3.00 favourite Pandemic (Sepoy) was a

further long neck behind in third. "She loves the

1000 metres, she loves the straight and she loves

    Flemington,” said Tiarnna Robertson. “Hopefully

if the weather permits we can tick four boxes on

the day and hopefully it'll be to suit her. She was

cruising, she was doing it easily. Jordan (Childs)

rides her perfectly.” Fabergino is a unique mare

with her own racing style, according to Childs,

who said: "It is pretty much that she finds a nice

rhythm and goes fast at a high cruising speed and

she's able to sustain that as well.”

Estijaab’s brother wins impressively on debut Two-year-old Remarque (Snitzel) stamped

himself as a bona fide Golden Slipper (Gr

1, 1200m) contender with an impressive

performance on debut over 1100 metres at

Rosehill. Following two encouraging trial wins,

the Team Hawkes-trained colt was sent off

the $1.40 favourite under Tommy Berry and

    comfortably defeated Zethus (Exceed And

Excel) by two lengths, despite being very green

in the straight. Sing A Love Song (Your Song)

was another one and three-quarter lengths

back in third. The brother to 2018 Golden

Slipper winner Estijaab (Snitzel) is on the

same path as his sister with co-trainer Michael

Hawkes pleased to see him get his first goal out

of the way. "Trials are one thing, but you've got

to come out and do it on race day," Hawkes said.

"You can take a lot away from that run, he had

the bad barrier and had a lot go against him. The

part I loved the most was when Tommy brought

him back and travelled well underneath him.

They're signs of good horses." Hawkes was not

scared to compare the siblings and added: "She

had natural gate speed, he has natural gate

speed. He's heading towards the Slipper, we

are not going to deny that. Two-year-olds don't

usually do that, good two-year-olds do and he's

    a good two-year-old."

Alderson stayer makes it two from twoCindy Alderson's decision to push Liqueuro

(Fiorente) out to 2000 metres at his second

start paid off as he posted an impressive

effort to land the Benchmark 70 contest at

    Flemington. Alderson said Liqueuro always

indicated he was going to be a stayer and

toyed with the idea of kicking his career off

over 2000 metres. However, she took the

    three-year-old gelding to Mornington where

he won on debut over 1500 metres. "I thought

he really did need 2000 metres, which he

needed every inch today to win," Alderson

said. "He's been one of those horses that

doesn't do a lot in trackwork but he does keep

on, he keeps on finding." Liqueuro finished

strongly to defeat Alloway (Wandjina) by a

head, with Solar Apex (Deep Impact) a length

    behind the winner in third.

In-from Harpo Marx continues purple patchThe Bjorn Baker-trained Harpo Marx (Galileo)

continued his rich vein of form this preparation

    with a fast-finishing victory in the 2000-metre

Benchmark 78 at Rosehill yesterday. The five-

year-old, who has won three times and placed

twice in his last six starts, produced a late

burst to run down tearaway leader Vadiyann

(Footstepsinthesand) by a head, with First

Courier two lengths behind the winner in

    third. Stable representative Stephen McLean

explained he had spoken with Baker after the

race, who watched closely while at the Gold

Coast and was not confident during the run.

"I just had a quick chat with Bjorn and he said

he wouldn't have taken 1000-1 at the 500m,"

McLean said. "But full credit to the horse, he

dug deep and fought hard all the way to the

line. It was a slight concern dropping back to

the 2000 metres today, but he is rock hard fit."

The Baker camp now have some planning to

do as to where Harpo Marx will head next.

"The Australia Day Cup may come a bit too

soon for him there at Warwick Farm, but I

think we've definitely got to look at it as an

    option," McLean said.

McNeil ends losing streakMelbourne Cup-winning jockey Jye McNeil

ended a difficult run of 51 Melbourne

rides without a winner when partnering

Coolth (Dundeel) to victory in yesterday’s

    Drumborg Trophy (2000m) at Flemington.

McNeil’s previous win came at Flemington

on December 12 and he has subsequently

slipped down to seventh on the jockeys’

premiership with 19 wins. Coolth, trained by

Tony and Calvin McEvoy, is being lined up for

a shot at the Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) in

    March.

Blamey the target for Over ExposureOver Exposure (Rothesay) will be targeted

at the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at

Flemington next month after a convincing

win over the course and distance yesterday.

The winner of the Blamey will gain a ballot-

free entry into the $5 million All-Star Mile

(1600m) at Moonee Valley in March, which

is the ultimate goal for the Tony and Calvin

McEvoy-trained gelding. "We’re going to try

and target him at the Blamey. If that means

a run in the Carlyon Stakes first, he’s up to

that level," Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com.

"He’s come through all his niggling injuries

and those things that have happened to him

earlier in his career. He’s a lovely sound

horse now and I think we’re going to be

    rewarded."

Four for Per Incanto Little Avondale resident Per Incanto (Street

Cry) sired his fourth individual elite level

winner when his daughter Bonham (3 f

ex Fortune’s Choice by Redoute’s Choice)

took out yesterday’s Levin Classic (Gr

1, 1600m) at Trentham. Trained in

partnership by Johno Benner and Hollie

    Wynyard, Bonham beat Brando (Savabeel)

by a neck, with Wild Moose (Nadeem) two

and a half lengths behind the winner in

third. In doing so she became the 17th

individual stakes winner for her sire as she

stretched her record to four wins in five

starts. Bred by Little Avondale, Bonham

was purchased for $160,000 by her owner

Gary Harding out of the 2019 Karaka Book

1 Yearling sale. She is the first winner out

of the Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare

Fortune’s Choice, who was winless during

her race career. Per Incanto stood for a fee

of $15,000 (plus GST) in 2020.

13 for Ocean ParkOcean Park (Thorn Park) sired his 13th

    individual stakes winner when the

improving Our Hail Mary (5 m ex Repenting

by Ekraar) continued her winning run with

    victory in yesterday’s Trentham Stakes

    (Gr 3, 2100m) The Allan Sharrock-trained

five-year-old followed up her two recent

handicap wins by defeating Fiscal Fantasy

(Skilled) and Dr Velocious (Haradasun) in a

tight finish. Our Hail Mary’s is out of a half-

sister to Sharrock’s former stable star Shez

    Sinsational (Ekraar), who collected four

Group 1 wins during her career. Ocean Park

stood for a fee of $20,000 (plus GST) in 2020.

Waikato Cup a possibility for Our Hail MaryConnections of Our Hail Mary have their sights

set on some big-race targets after she took her

tally to six wins in 13 starts yesterday. “Over

ground, I believe she’ll get to the top level,”

Sharrock, who is part-owner, as well as trainer

of the mare, said. “But I’m not going to ask too

much of her this time. I’ve got things like the

Waikato Cup in mind for next season. There are

a couple of fillies and mares’ races coming up

over the next few months, those could be nice

options for her.” Those include the Manawatu

Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) on April 9 and

the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) on May 1.

Four for Super EasyA step up in grade proved to be no obstacle to

Super Strike (4 g ex Southern Touch by Stark

South) as he took out yesterday’s Anniversary

Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham and in

the process provided his sire Super Easy (Darci

Brahma) with his fourth individual stakes

winner. Trained by Richard Collett, the four-

year-old just edged out Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi)

to notch his fifth win in nine starts. Guillada

(Guillotine) filled third spot. Super Easy stood

at Hallmark Stud for a fee of $7,500 in 2020.

Connections mulling options with Super StrikeSuper Strike was quoted as just a $10 chance by

the TAB for the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m)

at the end of the month following his win

yesterday, but Collett said he is yet to decide

if the gelding will take his chance. “He’s

come a long way in this preparation, and

this was his first time in open company,”

the trainer said. “So we’ll get him home and

see how he’s come through this run before

deciding on anything. He might not be far

away from going out to the paddock. But this

    was a good result today.”

51 for Darci BrahmaDarci Brahma (Danehill) sired his 51st

individual stakes winner when the exciting

UK: ‘No change’ at Juddmonte following Khalid Abdullah’s death The cherished green, white and pink silks of

the late Khalid Abdullah will continue to be

seen on racecourses for many years to come

after his family made public a commitment to

continue one of the world's most successful

racing and breeding operations. In an

announcement that will be welcomed by

fans of the sport worldwide, it was revealed

    yesterday that the Juddmonte bloodstock

empire will remain intact, with Abdullah,

who died peacefully on Tuesday aged 83,

having already approved the matings for

this year's covering season. Juddmonte chief

executive Douglas Erskine Crum told the

Racing Post: "The news is there will be no

change. Juddmonte will continue. There is

a commitment from the family and from all

the management and staff. It's onwards and

upwards. I must, however, preface everything

by saying everyone at Juddmonte is obviously

very saddened by what happened this week.

It's extremely rare you meet, let alone work

for, a person who is held in such high esteem

    and universally respected and admired."

No decisions have yet been made regarding

in what name the Abdullah horses will now

run, although two of his sons, Prince Ahmad

Chris Waller will plot a path to the

Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) with

    Shaquero (2 c Shalaa - Fimatino

by Not A Single Doubt) after the

exciting juvenile took out the Magic Millions

2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) in dominant style at

    the Gold Coast yesterday.

    Breaking from barrier one, connections

of Shaquero never had a moment's worry as

the colt stalked the leaders rounding the turn

before powering clear emphatically down the

straight to provide Chris Waller with his first

    win in the 2YO Classic.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman, $13 chance

    Shaquero put one-and-a-quarter lengths

between himself and runner-up Alpine Edge

(Better Than Ready), with the winner’s stablemate

She’s All Class (I Am Invincible) a further one-

    and-a-quarter lengths behind in third.

Shaquero showed an abundance of promise

when bursting onto the scene in October to

land the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) on debut

    at Randwick.

    He then disappointed when finishing

seventh of eight in the B J Mclachlan Stakes

(Gr 3, 1200m) on Boxing Day, before posting a

    second-placed effort behind Finance Tycoon

(Written Tycoon) in the Aquis Gold Nugget

    (1100m) last weekend.

Paul Shailer, representing the stable at

the Gold Coast with Waller prevented from

travelling due to border restrictions, was rapt

    with the performance of Shaquero.

“It was his first time in behind horses and he

really appreciated a nice hot tempo,” Shailer told

Sky Racing. “We got to get into a really nice rhythm.

“He learned at the right time of the race and

he showed a really explosive turn of foot. That was

probably the Shaquero that won the Breeders.

“He’s a classy colt and he’s very athletic and

a really good type to go with it.

“I’m very happy for Chris, Neville (Morgan,

co-owner) and Dave (Devine, co-owner) and

everyone involved, all the staff back home and

especially the Gold Coast team who have had a

lot to do with this colt for a long time. They work

tirelessly so it’s a great effort by everyone.”

    Discussing Shaquero’s performance in the

B J Mclachlan Stakes at Eagle Farm, Shailer said

there was plenty of head scratching going on in

the stable, but noted the colt responded well to

    the application of a tongue-tie.

“He just raced a little bit fresh and

ungenerous. We had a tongue-tie after that day

and he responded well to that,” Shailer said.

“Last week he raced a little bit fresh again

and was probably a little bit above himself,

so we knew he’d improve from that run. He

stripped really fit here today and obviously

barrier one plays a big part. He showed a great

turn of foot like a good colt does.”

    Shaquero was bought by Mulcaster

Bloodstock for $160,000 from the Fernrigg Farm

draft at last year’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He is the fourth foal out of Not A Single

Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) mare Fimatino, who

won twice on the track and has provided three

winners from her four runners to date.

Shaquero is raced by co-owners Neville

Morgan and David Devine and the latter was

delighted after finally accomplishing his quest

    to land the 2YO Classic.

“Thirty years we’ve been trying to win this.

It’s a great thrill, I must say,” said Devine.

“It was fantastic when he hit the front, I

thought ‘this was it’. He’s probably at his peak

fitness now and has needed those past two

runs, especially last week. I think it’ll be a party

    tonight.”

According to the betting markets, Shaquero

was the outsider of Waller’s three Classic

runners, with third-placed She’s All Class

($3.90) and fifth Ranch Hand (Fastnet Rock)

    ($9) both favoured by punters.

    Shailer was notably animated when

    discussing Ranch Hand’s performance and

expects a big future from the son of Fastnet

Rock (Danehill), who was featured as an

ANZ Bloodstock News Maiden Of The Week

    Shaquero MAGIC MILLIONS

THIRTY YEARS WE’VE BEEN TRYING TO WIN THIS. IT’S A GREAT THRILL, I MUST SAY- DAVID DEVINE

“He was super. He hit the line really strongly

and he’s going to go on to bigger and better

things, he’s a very nice horse and will win very

    good races,” said Shalier.

Of She’s All Class, he added: “She got back

a little bit further than we anticipated and

it got a little bit ugly from there on in. She’s

straightened up as the widest runner and never

    looked comfortable on the track.”

Shaquero provided Bowman with his third

win in the 2YO Classic after Bradbury's Luck

(Redoute’s Choice) (2005) and Mimi Le Brock

(Show A Heart) (2007), equaling the record

held by Mick Dittman and Chris Munce.

Snowden's Aim on point as Star Witness gelding lands Guineas

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Aim (3

g Star Witness - Vintage Strike by Smart Strike)

led home a Star Witness (Starcraft) quinella

in an incident-packed running of the Magic

Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) yesterday,

which saw Ryan Maloney unseat from well-

fancied favourite Isotope (Deep Field) at the

    top of the straight.

Sent off a $31 chance, Aim who was recently

sold to Hong Kong only for the buyers not

to transfer the money, made ground on the

outside before surging clear in the final 100

metres to comfortably defeat the Ciaron Maher

and David Eustace-trained Amish Boy (Star

Witness) by one and three-quarter lengths,

with Away Game (Snitzel) finishing two and a

half lengths behind the winner in third.

However, the race was marred by the

unfortunate unseat of Ryan Maloney on the

$2.15 favourite Isotope, who appeared to trip

    up when stalking her rivals.

Isotope returned unharmed to the on-

course stables, while Maloney, who was on

his feet following the fall, was subsequently

taken to hospital for precautionary concussion

    checks.

The incident continued a terrible run of luck

for Maloney in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas,

after his mount Alligator Blood (All Too Hard)

was subsequently stripped of the race last year

    because of a positive swab.

Aim, bought at the 2019 Gold Coast

Yearling Sale for $200,000 by China Horse Club

and Newgate Bloodstock from the Newhaven

Park draft, burst onto the scene in late 2019,

winning his first two races, but failed to score

in his nine subsequent starts prior to yesterday

    - including when sent off favourite for last year’s

Magic Millions 2YO Classic - culminating in

him running sixth of eight in a Benchmark 78

contest at Randwick a fortnight ago.

Despite his winless run - in which he

showed moments of promise, including a

third-placed finish in the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2,

1200m) last February - Paul Snowden said he

was expecting a big performance from the son

    of Star Witness.

“We were pretty confident. He just needed

to get back on firm going,” he told Sky Racing.

“We had to bite our tongue and run him a

fortnight ago just to get him started, we kept

running into wet tracks and he ran accordingly.

“He probably lost his way a bit after that

two-year-old season. He’s back as a gelding this

preparation and it’s a good bloody win!”

Snowden also had a message for Aim’s

Hong Kong buyers, who would have had the

gelding in their possession by now had they

    transferred the fee.

“He was sold and the money didn’t come

through, so we just played on and look what

we’ve got today. Thank you very much for not

    buying the horse,” Snowden said.

Aim is the second foal out of the Smart

Strike (Mr. Prospector) mare Vintage Strike. His

brother Venting was sold to Danny O’Brien at

last year’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is yet to

    be raced.

Bonham lands Levin Classic Talented three-year-old Bonham (3 f

    Per Incanto - Fortune’s Choice by Redoute’s

Choice) showed she is a filly of the highest

quality when taking out the Levin Classic (Gr 1,

    1600m) at Trentham yesterday.

Rated as the main danger to $1.80 favourite

Brando (Savabeel), the Johno Benner and Hollie

Wynyard-trained filly earned her victory the hard

way as she sat three-wide for the majority of the

race after breaking from barrier ten.

Taken forward by Lisa Allpress to challenge

for the lead rounding the home turn, $4.60

chance Bonham kicked clear early in the

straight before holding off the late charge of

Brando to win by a neck, with Wild Moose

(Nadeem) two and a half lengths behind the

    winner in third.

Benner admitted he had his concerns

during the race, but trusted in the ability of both

horse and rider to get the job done.

“She’s good and she had to be today,” he said.

“Lisa tried to ride her positively with cover, but

she lost that and had to go forward at 700 metres.

    Aim MAGIC MILLIONS

  • “She (Bonham) always seemed comfortable

in herself and now you can call her a Group

    1-winning filly, although that’s a feeling you

    never get used to.

“She does things that only Group 1 horses

can do, and is a great walking filly with a

    beautiful action.

“Gary (Harding, owner) has been great to

us and this will mean a lot to him.”

Allpress also noted she had her own

concerns when she found herself trapped out

wide and feared the reaction of Benner and

Wynyard if she did not recover the situation.

    “I wasn’t having a lot of luck three-deep and

I could hear Johno and Hollie in my head,“ she

    said.

“I thought I need to trust my horse as she

was fit and ready for today and a very fast mare,

so I knew they would have trouble coming from

    behind her.

“I think I’ve lost my voice from screaming at

her as she doesn’t need the whip, she just needs

a push to get her over the line.

“Johno and Hollie are my biggest

supporters, so I’m delighted to get the win for

    them.”

Bred by Little Avondale Stud, Bonham was

purchased for $160,000 by Harding out of the

2019 Karaka Book 1 Yearling Sale.

She is the first winner out of the Redoute’s

Choice (Danehill) mare Fortune’s Choice, who

was winless during her eight-race career.

    Avantage retains Telegraph crown

Versatile mare Avantage (5 m Fastnet

Rock - Asavant by Zabeel) was at her very best

when taking out the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m)

for the second consecutive year at Trentham

    yesterday.

    The Jamie Richards-trained five-year-old

scored first-up in the Sistema Railway (Gr 1,

1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day to take

her Group 1-winning tally to five and she added

a sixth with a devastating two-length defeat of

    Spring Heat (More Than Ready).

Danielle Johnson was smarting after a

narrow defeat on Brando, who finished a neck

behind Bonham in the Levin Classic earlier in

the day, and she was determined to redeem

herself on the Fastnet Rock mare.

After a good break from barrier ten,

Avantage placed handily with cover in midfield

before being angled into the centre of the track

by Johnson to make her final claim.

Unleashed at the 200 metres, she powered

past Mascarpone (Shooting To Win) and Tavi

Mac (Tavistock) to take control of the contest,

running out a comfortable winner from last

year’s third placegetter Spring Heat and

Burgundy Belle (Burgundy), who finished four

lengths off her stablemate in third.

Johnson, who would go on to finish with

four winners on the card, has partnered

Avantage to three of her Group 1 victories.

“She’s just a pleasure to ride and words

can’t really describe how exciting it is to get on

her and win Group 1s,” Johnson said.

“Everything seemed to work out well as we

    were three-wide but with cover.

“I knew what I had underneath me, but

I wanted her to keep running to the line, so

dinner was a bit easier after getting beaten on

    Brando.

    “1200 metres, 1400 metres, a mile or 2000

metres doesn’t matter to her as she just keeps

winning and it’s a pleasure to be associated

    with her.”

    Richards echoed those sentiments when

    questioned after the race.

“She’s a great mare and has done us all

proud as that was pretty special,” he said. “It

was a ten out of ten ride as well.

“She will go to Te Rapa in a month now (for

the BCD Group Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m)) but she

has got time for a quiet week after this.

“She’s done a fantastic job for us and I

would like to give her a chance to put a Group 1

    in Australia on the board.

“I think she deserves the opportunity, so

we’ll have to sit down and make a plan on how

    we get there.

“She can be a bit difficult behind the scenes

and on raceday, but when we first saw her at the

sales, we thought she might just be a two-year-

    old.

“She’s now justified everybody’s faith in

her and has done a wonderful job. The best

thing about her is her constitution and her

    willingness to be a racehorse.”

Purchased by David Ellis CNZM for

$210,000 from The Oaks Stud draft during the

premier session at Karaka in 2017, Avantage has

now won thirteen of her 23 starts, with ten of

those at stakes level including her six Group 1s.

Bred by Willie and Karen Calder from Bluff,

Avantage already boasts an Australian Group 3

victory in the 2019 running of the Birthday

Card Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), as well as a Group 2

placing from a brief campaign at three.

One of 40 individual Group 1 winners for

prolific sire Fastnet Rock, Avantage has so

far won more Group 1s than any other son or

    daughter of the great stallion.

BY MICHAEL LEE | SPG TURF CLUB

    When trainer Alwin Tan

    brought up his 498th career

    winner with Helushka

    (Toronado) on February

28 last year, most thought picking up another

couple of winners to hit that all-important

    milestone wouldn’t take too long.

Nobody could have guessed it would

actually take just under one year.

True, the Covid-19 pandemic that plagued

the world and the local racing industry was an

unbelievable catastrophe, but with racing going

back to business on July 11 following the three-

month lockdown, Tan could still conceivably

have made that 500-figure by the end of 2020.

He had to, however, endure a long drought

until the aptly-named Victory Joy (Haradasun)

saluted on September 12 at long odds, but

sitting just the one winner shy of the landmark

has turned out to be an even more agonisingly

    long wait.

Still, credit to Tan who got the new 2021

campaign underway with a positive mindset,

convinced a brand new chapter can only bring

better fortunes, and sure enough, The Archer

    (Wandjina) finally brought that much-needed

fillip in yesterday’s open maiden race over 1200

    metres on Polytrack.

Ridden by Wong Chin Chuen, the $42

shot came with a barnstorming finish on the

grandstand side to finish locked together with

debutant and favourite Malibu Beach (Malibu

    Moon).

“We’ve waited many months for that

winner,” said Tan. “Horses were coming in and

out of the stables with so many transfers. We

were already going through hard times but the

pandemic made it even harder for us.

“By October, I was feeling very lost as we

still had no winners after Victory Joy won back

in September. But thanks to the owners who

have never stopped supporting me, I kept

believing in myself and my staff.

“To get the winner today is a big relief and a

big motivation for myself and my staff, who have

worked so hard. Hopefully, we can look forward

to more winners from now on, and more support.”

The Archer defeated Malibu Beach by

a short head with Happy Friday (Shooting

To Win) third another half-length away. The

    winning time was 1min 12.03secs.

Starlight just won't be put out

    Even-money favourite Starlight (Headwater)

duly delivered but not without rattling the nerves

    of his backers and connections.

Following his smashing debut win at last

season’s final meeting, Starlight was considered

by many as a shoo-in in the novice race over

    1200 metres.

But at the 300-metre pole when Be You

(Showcasing), who had been a thorn in his side

from the start, levelled up and even poked his head

in front, those who had already called him home

before the race must have been eating their words.

    Under jockey Louis-Philippe Beuzelin’s

    renewed vigour, Starlight resolutely picked

himself off the canvas to rein Be You back in

before pressing on to a valiant half-length win.

The winning time was 1min 10.22secs for the

1200 metres on the Long Course.

    Clements’ assistant-trainer Michael

White was clearly a relieved man at the

winner’s circle as he waited on the PSM

Racing Stable-owned galloper to return to

scales, but still stood by his spontaneous

assessment Starlight was one of the best he

    has dealt with at Kranji.

The Australian also reiterated his fears

about the flip side of the exciting prospect – his

    jittery mannerisms.

“I’m still very nervous when he heads out

there. He’s still nowhere near the finished

article, we haven’t done much with him and

he still doesn’t know what he’s doing,” said

    White.

“But he’s beaten a handy horse in Be You

today. The day his brain is linked to his engine,

he’ll be a much better horse.”

    After fetching AUD$210,000 as a two-year-

old at the Inglis Ready-2-Run in 2019, Starlight

is close to recouping half of that price tag from

    his two-from-two record.

    Sacred Croix regains old brilliance

    Hakim Kamaruddin’s patience in the

saddle went a long way in sparking Sacred Croix

(Savabeel) back up for a long-awaited return to

    the winner’s enclosure.

The six-year-old has not greeted the judge

in nearly two years having last scored in Class

    3 company for a four-in-a-row in April 2019, a

feat which pretty much stamped his ticket to

    the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge.

Unfortunately he did not win any of the

three legs, albeit far from disgraced with two

seconds in the Silver Bowl (Listed, 1400m)

and the Stewards’ Cup (LIsted, 1600m), and a

creditable fifth to Sun Marshal (Sepoy) in the

    Singapore Derby (Listed, 1800m).

Trainer Mark Walker gave Sacred Croix

a well-earned break after the Derby, but the

performances had slowly slipped downhill since.

A closing fourth place in a Class 2 event over

the mile with Kamaruddin up was probably one

of his rare flashes of brilliance since, and it’s

precisely that run that was etched in the young

rider’s mind when he cantered Sacred Croix

down to the pens in the Class 3 race over 1200

    metres.

“I rode this horse before, in a 1600-metre

race, but this time he was running in a

    1200-metre race on

    the Long Course,”

    said Hakim.

    “I cannot go too

    early on the Long

    Course, boss also told

    me to hold as long

    as I could. The horse

    was very relaxed and

    I wasn’t worried the

    leaders were still far

    in front.

    “He has not raced

    for a long time and

    was also a bit fresh.

    That’s why I didn’t

    want to go too early

    also. But once he

came out into the clear, he quickened very well.

I work the horse in the morning and I felt he had

improved, I was confident he would run well.”

Kamaruddin went on to complete a double

    when French import Sincerely (Evasive)

capitalised on his postage-stamp load to upend a

handy field in the Class 2 race over 1400 metres.

The Toulouse Listed winner carried the luxury

weight of 48.5 kilograms under the in-form

    apprentice.
