COOLMORE DIGS DEEP FOR SON OF KINGMAN AS COLT FUNDS DOMINATE AT MAGIC MILLIONS - PAGE 1
a kind of magica kind of magicYour ultimate guide from our team of experts
A colt born in the UK to southern
hemisphere time by super
European sire Kingman
(Invincible Spirit) provided the
benchmark on another extraordinary day of
trade when selling for $1.8 million at the Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale yesterday.
Even the most bullish industry pundits and
stakeholders did not predict, at least publicly,
the insatiable appetite shown by buyers during
the first two sessions of the seven-day auction,
which resulted in four million-dollar lots being
sold on Wednesday as the key metrics kept pace
with the corresponding figures from the past
two years. Continued on page 2>>

TUE 12TH - MON 18TH JANUARY 2021 MAGIC MILLIONS GOLD COAST YEARLING SALE SALE LIVE
| 2 |
While a colt by Not A Single Doubt
(Redoute’s Choice) broke the seven-figure barrier before midday, it was
the son of Kingman who stole the show, his sale coming less than 24 hours
after it was announced that the stallion’s owner-breeder, Juddmonte
Farms founder Prince Khalid Abdullah, had died aged 83.
Segenhoe Stud’s Peter O’Brien, who offered the colt on behalf of his
breeder Fairway Thoroughbreds’ John Camilleri, knew the son of Kingman
would be a sales-ring star in Australia.
“We knew he was going to sell well. We knew every one of the big
buyers liked him, but you never expect them to sell that well,” O’Brien
said.
“He was a beautiful colt by one of the best sires in the world from a
very good racemare. I'm delighted he is going to Coolmore, because he’ll
get every chance.
“The best colt I thought I’d ever taken to the sales was King’s Legacy.
James Harron was underbidder on the Kingman and Coolmore was
underbidder on King’s Legacy as a yearling. The same two people duked it
out and I firmly believe this is a Group 1 horse.”
The colt is out of Australian Group 3-winning mare Florentina
(Redoute’s Choice), making him a half-brother to the stakes-placed duo
Villa Carlotta (Street Cry) and Fasano (Lonhro). He was offered as Lot 322.
“All credit to John Camilleri - it’s a big swing to send a mare up there
(to the northern hemisphere). She went to Dubawi first and that filly
sold for 475,000gns at Tatts, then she went to Kingman, and came back
pregnant to Kingman, and he was at foot,” O’Brien said.
“He was born in England and came here to Australia about 12 months
ago. John is a global thinker and he’s got paid for it. Coolmore looked
at him plenty of times and they complimented him this morning about
his temperament.
He is absolutely
bombproof. He has a
great mind and I can’t
wait to see him at the
racetrack.”
C o o l m o r e ’ s
Tom Magnier, who
also took home the
$1.9 million Snitzel
(Redoute’s Choice)
colt on day one, has
faith in Kingman
working in Australia.
“Segenhoe always
has incredible horses at this sale, and we know what John Camilleri can
breed,” Magnier said.
“You know when you see that Fairway Thoroughbreds brand on the
horse, you have to take it pretty seriously.
“We know everything about how well Kingman is going at the moment.
We have got Calyx at the farm by Kingman, who is going well. All the boxes
were ticked for us.”
O’Brien is equally confident that Kingman can make his mark on
Australian racing and breeding.
“The last time I looked he’d had three runners for three winners here in
Australia. What I really liked about him was that he had two very good two-
year-old winners in Japan two weeks ago and the Kingman’s love fast ground.
“As I said, the bloodlines work and they should adore Australian
conditions and there’s no reason why he can’t hit the heights he has
worldwide in Australia.”
Trainer Chris Waller will be the lucky recipient of the colt.
Meanwhile, Magnier also paid tribute to Abdullah.
“Obviously, it's a big loss to racing. Prince Khalid Abdullah was not
only a gentleman, he helped shape our industry,” he said.
“If you look back on some of the greatest breeders of all time, he's
definitely one of them. The silks are famous worldwide and he has been
one of the best.
“We have had Danehill and Frankel and Arrogate win in them.
It’s a huge loss for racing, but he's left a remarkable stamp on the
industry.”

Farnan partnership strike againEarlier, Tony Fung and Phoenix Thoroughbreds, the partnership
behind last year’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner and soon-to-be
Kia Ora Stud stallion Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), reinvested in another
son of Not A Single Doubt in the hope of repeating the on-track success.
“We are obviously unabashed fans of the sire. We were fortunate
enough to secure Farnan from the same sales ring, and he was able to win
the Golden Slipper. At the end of the day, that's the dream, to get him back
for these big races,” Aquis Farm managing director Shane McGrath said.
“He's a straightforward colt. We liked everything about him and every
time we looked at him he never turned a hair. He looks like he’ll be early
and hopefully lightning can strike twice for us.”
The Torryburn Stud-consigned youngster, who was catalogued as Lot
221, is the first foal out of the Group 1-placed mare Denmagic (Denman).
He will be trained by rising Sydney star Annabel Neasham.
“Most of these world-class sires, they tend to throw a type, and he
was very much in that mould,” McGrath continued. “He's come off a great
farm and he was extremely well presented. There is plenty of competition
there, which you’d expect from a quality colt.
“Hopefully he goes on to make the mare for the breeder.”
Spendthrift Australia, the southern hemisphere arm of last year’s
Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f)-winning owner B. Wayne Hughes, was
underbidder.
“I always thought, from the moment he was born, that he could make a
million dollars but everything has to work out. He has come here and it has
worked out and I am absolutely stoked,” said Torryburn Stud manager Mel Copelin.
“Once I saw all the vetting come through, he’d certainly had enough
inspections to be a million-dollar horse. He definitely has the best
temperament and everyone can see that. He hasn’t turned a hair.”
Denmagic, who was purchased in 2018 from the Magic Millions
National Broodmare Sale for $350,000 by agent Ric Wylie, has a filly by The
Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) and was covered by Exceed And Excel
(Danehill) this season.

Lot 245Breeding: Fastnet Rock - Dreams And Wishes (Galileo) filly
Price: $800,000Buyer: Ciaron Maher BloodstockVendor: Strawberry Hill Stud
Ciaron Maher, who went to $800,000 for an I Am Invincible
filly on day one, was active again yesterday in order to secure a
well-bred daughter of Fastnet Rock (Danehill), who is a three-
quarter sister in blood to this season’s VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m)
winner Personal. “You don’t see a lot of those fillies and she was
probably the best filly in the sale, I thought,” said Maher. “She has
got a beautiful attitude and she has a great physical, a pedigree
and a healthy enough price tag to match. She’s out of a Galileo
broodmare and we have Sneaky Five out of a staying-type mare
and she has won over 1000 and 1100 metres, so she is just a nice
horse and we are rapt to be able to get her.” The Fastnet Rock-
Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) cross has produced 20 stakes winners
from 89 runners at a 22 per cent strike rate, with the highest-
profile in Australia being Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner
Unforgotten.Lot 382: Shalaa ex Honesty Prevails colt MAGIC MILLIONS
Lot 328Breeding: So You Think - Fragrance (Commands) colt Price: $800,000Buyer: George Moore Bloodstock Vendor: Segenhoe Stud
George Moore made his only play of the sale yesterday when
stepping in to secure a colt by So You Think (High Chaparral) for
the same owner as Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (Gr 3, 1000m) runner-
up Stronger (Not A Single Doubt), who was purchased from the
corresponding auction in 2018 when realising $1.05 million to
James Harron Bloodstock. Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden,
Stronger won the Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m)
at the Gold Coast prior to being sold to Hong Kong, where he is
now trained by Douglas Whyte. “The sale is really strong. We were
expecting $500-600,000 and he went for $800,000,” Moore said.
“He is going to go to the same owner as Stronger in Hong Kong.
They have a PPG permit through both his daughter and son, so
that's what he is going to do. I'll only be buying the one horse.”
The colt is the third living foal out of an unraced sister to Group
1 winner Skilled (Commands) and Group 2 scorer Ambidexter
as well as being a half-sister to Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
winner and champion Australian two-year-old Sidestep (Exceed
and Excel). Moore continued: “We’ve had a bit of luck with So You
Thinks. I bought Buddies and he ran in the Sprint in Hong Kong.
He's probably a Group 3 horse up there and this colt is very similar.
You don't want the big So You Thinks. He was really composed
today. He has a really big hip on him, and carried himself well. He
had 39 X-ray hits, which I've never heard before.” would employ.

Colts partnerships make mark on day twoTwo other colt syndicates registered their first blows of the sale
yesterday, with agent James Harron Bloodstock landing a Shalaa
(Invincible Spirit) yearling for $1.15 million and a son of Capitalist
(Written Tycoon) for $975,000.
The newly formed Victorian Alliance, led by Rosemont Stud’s Nigel
Austin, also went to seven figures for a Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt
after both outfits had missed out despite repeated attempts until a heated
mid-to-late afternoon period of trade.
Harron’s biggest play of the second session was on the Shalaa colt, who
is the second foal from the former Rick Worthington-trained ATC Widden
Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Honesty Prevails (Redoute’s Choice). He was
catalogued as Lot 382 and Ciaron Maher was the underbidder.
“Shalaa having a Breeders' Plate winner early in his career is very
impressive,” Harron said.
“He's a very special colt with lots of quality and he comes off a
great farm in Arrowfield. He was one of our must-have colts and we are
delighted to get him.
“It’s a fantastic family and Honesty Prevails was a real star mare.
Redoute's needs no introduction as a sire or a broodmare sire. It was a
super result.”
Continuing his support of young sire Capitalist, who sported his dark
green and gold epaulette colours to win the 2016 Golden Slipper, Harron
bought the second crop yearling, who is a brother to this season’s Lloyd
Kennewell-trained Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) placegetter Marine One.
He was offered by Newgate Farm, the home of Capitalist, as Lot 349,
and is the third foal out of Listed winner and Group 1-placed Golconda
(Snitzel).
“He was very much like his father: very sharp, very precocious and I
loved the way he handled the sale,” Harron said.
“He had
a very good
attitude towards
everything, His
brother, Marine
One, has got
some ability and
has proven to be a
handy horse.
“We’ve also got a nice Capitalist already on the team in Forbes, so that
made us comfortable to have a shot in this guy.
“He's well-balanced, medium-sized, with a lovely depth of girth and
just a really good, sharp, alert head. He’s a very nice colt, and hopefully he
can go nice and early.”
Both of Harron’s acquisitions will be broken in at Kolora Lodge in
Queensland before joining the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable.
The Victorian Alliance, who has enlisted the assistance of agents
Suman Hedge and the UK’s David Redvers and Hannah Wall, helped
provide Widden Stud with its second million-dollar yearling of the sale
when the partnership went to seven figures for Lot 332.
The colt, who was bred by Widden Stud and Longwood Thoroughbred
Farm’s Michael Christian, is the fifth foal out of Western Australian Group
3 winner Fuddle Dee Duddle (Red Ransom).
Rosemont Stud general manager of bloodstock Ryan McEvoy, who
raced Zoustar Group winners Zousain and Sun City, revealed the colt
became a prime target some weeks ago.
“It feels like it’s been a long wait and we are rapt to be able to secure
this colt. He was our number one after being in the Hunter Valley in mid-
December and he is as nice a colt as we have been able to inspect this
week,” McEvoy said.
“He is a sharper style of Zoustar and bred on a similar cross to
Sunlight. He looks like a horse who will cope

Lot 182Breeding: Redoute’s Choice - Condesaar (Xaar) fillyPrice: $500,000Buyer: Bahen Bloodstock/Matt Laurie Racing Vendor: Rosemont Stud
Victorian trainer Matt Laurie stepped in early yesterday,
securing the Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) half-sister to dual
Group 1-winning filly Yankee Rose (All American). The filly is also
from the same family as Black Soil Bloodstock’s star three-year-
old Isotope (Deep Field), who is favourite for Saturday’s Magic
Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m). “She’s obviously got a really
strong pedigree but she backs that up with her physique. She’s a
lovely, strong filly who is by a stallion who needs no introduction,”
said Laurie, who signed for the filly alongside Hong Kong-based
agent Justin Bahen. “We are obviously hopeful that she can add to
her pedigree with good racetrack performances, but she has a hell
of a pedigree and she will be a good broodmare down the track
either way.”
Lot 220Breeding: Not A Single Doubt - Delphic (Street Cry) fillyPrice: $550,000Buyer: Nick Olive RacingVendor: Milburn Creek
Nick Olive trained a filly by Arrowfield Stud’s brilliant sire Not
A Single Doubt to Group 1 glory in the shape of Vinery Stud Stakes
(Gr 1, 2000m) winner Single Gaze and yesterday the Canberra-
based horseman paid $550,000 for another daughter of the now
pensioned stallion, the highest-priced horse of his career to
date. “She was a lovely filly. The first foal out of the mare died
(by Pierro) and they had a big opinion of him and the second one
(State Capital) goes all right, too, but he hasn’t raced yet. She was
a lovely filly and she’s by Not A Single Doubt, who is one of my
favourite stallions and we won’t be able to buy them again.” Olive
bought the filly on behalf of an undisclosed client. “We’ve done a
good job with what we’ve got, so it’s good to get a bit of backing
behind you and get some nicer horses,” he said.
WE’VE ALSO GOT A NICE CAPITALIST ALREADY ON THE TEAM IN FORBES, SO THAT MADE US COMFORTABLE TO HAVE A SHOT IN THIS GUY- JAMES HARRON

with the work and we noted what a great
attitude he had all week. We saw him every day and he didn’t turn a hair,
and I think that is important for a Zoustar.
“We had to stretch as is clearly evident in this sale. It is obviously
a strong market, but we are over the moon to have this boy join our
partnership.”
A trainer has yet to be decided for the youngster, with the Victorian
Alliance directors to make that call at a later date.
I Am Invincible filly joins GodolphinGodolphin’s selective buying strategy for 2021 also got underway on
the second day, with the purchase of an I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit)
filly for $900,000.
Vin Cox, managing director of the Australian arm of the global racing
and breeding empire, declared they were on their last legs when the price
surged towards the million-dollar mark.
“We're delighted to be getting an I Am Invincible filly out of a very,
very good racemare, off an outstanding farm,” he said.
“We think we have bought a good horse, now we have to knock it
into shape. She's just very athletic, a precocious type and she's got the
pedigree. She's one of those fillies which is a rare commodity, let’s hope
she ends up being a very good racehorse.
“She has a pedigree that we can add to our bloodstock portfolio. They
are the ones that we want to chase that improve our bloodstock profile.”
Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida, who has bought four yearlings so far,
was underbidder.
The filly is out of Eloping (Choisir), a dual Group 3 winner who is also a sister
to the stakes-placed Jesse’s Girl and a three-quarter sister to Group 3-winning
juvenile Of The Brave (Starspangledbanner). She is owned by Longwood
Thoroughbred Farm’s Michael Christian in partnership with Segenhoe.
The soon-to-be James Cummings-trained yearling filly is Eloping’s
second foal and she was catalogued as Lot 257.
“It is a huge result. She has been very popular during the week, but
(the price) exceeded our expectations. She has gone to a great team in
Godolphin and James Cummings, so we’re delighted that she’s gone to a
really good home,” Segenhoe Stud manager Brian Clarke said.
“She is out of Group 3 winner Eloping, who was a very fast mare, so she
has a big residual value. I Am Invincible has got so many Group-winning
fillies, so you’re a great chance of getting a stakes winner when you buy
one of those.”
Eloping has a filly
foal by Trapeze Artist
(Snitzel) and she
visited the Widden
Stud stallion’s own
sire Snitzel in 2020.
The two days of
strong trade at the Gold
Coast was due to a
strong domestic market,
according to Cox.
“In any market over any period of time, it’s the domestic market which
is the guts of the market. There is just a huge appetite domestically to buy
horses, whether it be syndicators, colt buyers, local buyers, or us as a global
organisation looking to buy nice horses to add to our system,” he said.
“As we know, there is a lack of international buyers, but it is great that
our industry can stand up on our own two feet and really be as buoyant
and strong as it has been.”
Market shows no signs of slowing downAt the close of trade on the second day of the season-opening Gold
Coast sale, the clearance rate for 330 horses sold was at 88 per cent, at an
average of $258,202 and a median of $180,000, which is comparative or
above compared to the 2020 and 2019 sales.
The circumstances this year are, of course, dramatically different
but they appear, at least to this point, to have not affected the Australian
bloodstock market.
“If it was solid yesterday. It was extremely solid today. The clearance
rate is edging towards 88 per cent. The average hit $260,000 and is holding
just underneath that. There is buoyancy at all ends, there are buyers that
are walking away thrilled with their purchases,” Magic Millions managing
director Barry Bowditch said last night.
“Vendors are putting them on the market and once you get to the
better end of the market, the colt funds, and even those here to buy fillies,
are pinning their ears back and having a proper go.”
There are some buyers who have lamented their inability to enter the
market up to this point, but with five days of selling remaining, Bowditch
believes there are plenty of opportunities for those wanting to invest.
“Everyone will get a turn here. It’s a huge catalogue and that's the
beauty of this sale, and the beauty of Magic Millions,” he said.
“We have a catalogue full of quality horses that the vendors decide to
send here. If you keep your lists long, and you do your work, then you are
going to be rewarded in the long run. Book 1 having a catalogue of 960-
odd horses will do that and then following into Book 2

AUSTRALIA
Eustace delighted withAway Game draw Co-trainer David Eustace believes Away Game
(Snitzel) has every chance of becoming the
first horse to complete the Magic Millions
2YO Classic (RL, 1200m)-Magic Millions 3YO
Guineas (RL, 1400m) double after the hard-
knocking filly drew barrier three for the $2
million contest at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
"As Glen Boss said yesterday from barrier three,
she's going to look the winner in the straight
but whether she'll see out the last 100 metres,
that's the query," Eustace, who trains Away
Game in partnership with Ciaron Maher, told
RSN yesterday. "She'll give 110 per cent that's
for sure. We've got huge faith in her. We'll make
use of her barrier and she'll be there every step
of the way." Away Game finished a neck behind
Guineas favourite Isotope (Deep Field) in the
Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben
on December 19 and Eustace believes his
charge has improved ahead of the eagerly-
anticipated rematch. "She was first-up off a long
break. She's thrived since and her work since
has been great," he said.
Cloud over Fake Love, BoomnovaMeanwhile, Away Game’s stable companion
and leading Classic hopeful Fake Love (I Am
Invincible) will have to undergo a veterinary
inspection this morning if she is to line-up
at the weekend, with the juvenile having
pulled a shoe at the beach yesterday. Guineas
contender Boomnova (Spirit Of Boom) will also
have to pass the vets if she is to have a chance of
completing a four-timer on Saturday. The Chris
Munce-trained filly, who completed a recent
hat-trick with a short-head victory at the Gold
Coast last weekend, needs one more runner to
come out if she is to make the final field.
Gollan buoyant ahead of Isotope bid Confidence is also high among the Tony
Gollan camp ahead of Isotope’s bid to justify
favouritism in Saturday’s Guineas following
her draw in barrier seven. The improving three-
year-old, who ran second in the Champagne
Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) as a juvenile, secured
her second Listed prize when taking out the
Gold Edition Plate, having streaked away to a
three-length success in the Mode Plate (Listed,
1200m) at Doomben a fortnight earlier. “It’s a
very hard race with a lot of quality horses and
it’ll take a genuine Group horse to win it and
I’m hopeful Isotope can do it,” Gollan told
Racing Queensland. “I’m happy Isotope drew
barrier seven and I’d like to see her race a bit
closer than she did when she won the Gold
Edition last time. She stepped away well that
day but couldn’t muster any speed but this time
there’s a lot of speed horses drawn under her.”
Best is yet to come from Estrado Gary Portelli is set to launch a three-pronged
assault on Saturday’s card at Rosehill, including
Estrado (Stratum) in the Benchmark 78 over
1100 metres. The four-year-old was winning
for the fourth time in 28 starts when securing
a Canterbury handicap by three-quarters of
a length last Friday, but the Warwick Farm
trainer believes the best is yet to come from
his charge. "She's just one of those horses that
has promised so much and is now starting to
deliver," he said. "Every preparation she's gone
to a new level. She's been unlucky not to have
won more races in town and she does race
well at Rosehill." Estrado has finished second
in both of her previous outings over Saturday’s
course and distance, while she will be joined
at the meeting by stable companions Above
And Beyond (Sebring), who will contest the
Benchmark 78 over 1500 metres, and two-year-
old debutant Hollywood Gossip (I’m All The
Talk). "She's by a stallion I used to train and
she's trialled nicely both times," Portelli said of
the latter. "Barrier one will certainly help her get
around in her first start. It's more of a look-see
for her at the moment and then we'll work out
what sort of horse we've got based on what we
see."
Halvorsen to finish strongly on his return Halvorsen (Magnus) will make his first start
since finishing seventh in the Oakleigh Plate
(Gr 1, 1100m) last February when he lines up
in the Kensington Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at
Flemington on Saturday and co-trainer Robbie
Griffiths is looking for a strong-finishing effort
from his five-year-old, who is being set for the
Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m)
and Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) in
the autumn. "I'm really happy with how he
has returned. He has come back a bigger and
stronger horse as a five-year-old,” Griffiths, who
trains in partnership with Matthew De Kock,
said of the three-time straight course winner.
“He'll be the underdog against some in-form
horses who love the straight, such as Fabergino
and Prezado, who have been racing recently
and are battle hardened, which will give them
the upper hand. I'm thinking he'll be the black-
booker from the race and he'll be the one
everyone will be talking about as he'll get back
and finish on strongly."

Arcaded impresses for Cummings at Caulfield Godolphin trainer James Cummings secured
his fifth individual two-year-old winner
in Melbourne this season when Arcaded
(Street Boss) made a striking impression
with a three and a quarter length success
on debut at Caulfield yesterday. Joining her
stable companions Picarones (Shooting To
Win), Paulele (Dawn Approach), Ingratiating
(Frosted) and Anamoe (Street Boss) as winners,
Arcaded firmed into a $26 chance with TAB
for next month’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) having swept aside her eight rivals in
the hands of Damian Lane. "She had a couple of
trials in September and James and Reg Fleming
decided she was a bit weak and needed time
out," Cummings Melbourne foreman Sean
Keogh said following the 1100-metre success.
Keogh also confirmed the promising filly will
now progress to the better juvenile races.
Thunderstruck goes down a storm for Price and Kent JrMick Price and Michael Kent Jr saddled
their sixth New Zealand-bred Melbourne
metropolitan winner since November 25 when
I'm Thunderstruck (Shocking) swooped late to
make a successful debut in the $50,000 Neds
Filter Form Plate (1200m) at Caulfield yesterday.
Formerly trained by Daniel Miller, for whom he
won a 1000-metre two-year-old trial at Te Aroha
on July 9, I’m Thunderstruck was subsequently
acquired by OTI Racing and transferred to his
current stable, who have enjoyed a remarkable
recent run with horses bred across the Tasman.
Sent off the $2.60 favourite, the three-year-old
arrived with a sustained challenge under Michael
Dee, who told Racing.com post-race: "They were
going awfully slow back where we were (in the
field) so he's done an amazing job to pick them
up. I thought that he was above average before
coming here today, I had done both jump-outs
on him leading into this and he's given me a
nice feel each time. He is one that's certainly
done that very greenly, he wanted to lay in, but
he picked up sharply underneath me around the
home bend. He's one that's certainly going to get
1400 to 1600 metres, which will be ideal for him
as he was finding his best on the line and past the
line.”
Warwick Farm maiden winner provides timely MM update Shivani’s (Sebring) three-length success at
Warwick Farm yesterday provided a timely
boost ahead of her I Am Invincible (Invincible
Spirit) half-brother going under the hammer
in Saturday’s session of the Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Carrying the colours
of Kia Ora Stud and trained by Team Hawkes,
Shivani got off the mark at the fourth time of
asking under Tommy Berry, building on her
recent runner-up effort at Newcastle. Passed
in as a yearling and retained to race by Kia Ora,
Shivani is the second winner from Group 2
victress Villa Verde (Not a Single Doubt), who
was bought off the track for $1.1million at the
Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in
2015. Her latest yearling, an August-foaled
grey colt, is catalogued as Lot 934. Villa Verde
has since produced a filly foal by More Than
Ready (Southern Halo) prior to being covered
by Pierro (Lonhro) on October 30.
Jarvis chases back-to-back Cup wins Local trainer Natalie Jarvis will be double
handed when she goes in search of back-to-
back wins in today’s Moruya Cup (1435m).
The $75,000 feature was scheduled to be run
on January 4, but the meeting was abandoned
after race five due to persistent heavy rain
and lightning. Jarvis’ representatives Hay Bale
(Canford Cliffs) and Airfree (Wilful Default)
would have relished the testing conditions
on that occasion, but the trainer remains
upbeat despite the prospect of a good surface
this afternoon. "When the rain started falling
through the afternoon at the January 4 meeting
we really started cheering as both Hay Bale
and Airfree both like heavy tracks," Jarvis told
Racing NSW. “On Thursday they look like they
will get completely different, much firmer track
conditions. That's not a problem for Hay Bale,
who handles all surfaces, but Airfree would
have needed a softer track to be a winning
hope." Airfree caused a boilover in last year’s
contest when winning by half a length at $26,
while Hay Bale was last seen running a long-
neck second in the Christmas Cup (1300m) on
December 20.
Waller stars to trialA significant number of Chris Waller’s team
for the autumn carnival will continue their
preparations for Group 1 assignments by
undertaking a barrier trial at Rosehill tomorrow
morning. The champion trainer is set to field all
ten horses in the heat due off at 8.15am, with
nine of those participants having either won,
or placed, at elite level. They include Caulfield
Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Verry Elleegant (Zed)
and star sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi). Other
interesting autumn pointers include the Team
Hawkes-trained Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) in
heat five at 8.55am, while All-Star Mile (1600m)-
nominated duo Osamu (Exceed And Excel) and
Global Quest (More Than Ready) will contest
heat 13 at 10.15am for Annabel Neasham.
Legacy targeting Sydney autumn Dual Group 1-winning colt King’s Legacy
(Redoute’s Choice) will be campaigned solely
in Sydney this autumn after co-trainer Peter
Snowden ruled out a return to Melbourne
following a disappointing spring campaign.
A winner of the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) and Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)
as a juvenile, King’s Legacy failed to build on
those performances in a four-start Melbourne
campaign, running third in the Golden Rose
(Gr 1, 1400m) but otherwise finishing no better
than seventh. “I’m not sure what happened
in Melbourne but hopefully he can regain his
focus,” Snowden, who trains in partnership
with his son Paul, told Racing.com. “The
Hobartville will probably be first up for him into
the Randwick Guineas and then we’ll see what
happens from there, but he’ll be in Sydney the
whole time this prep for sure.”
Johnny spelled and will miss autumn Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Johnny
Get Angry (Tavistock) has been sent back
to the paddock and will miss the autumn
carnival. Owner and trainer Denis Pagan said
yesterday that the three-year-old pulled up
“a little scratchy” after his work the previous
morning and while not lame, Pagan said he
wanted to err on the side of caution with
the horse that delivered him with a fairytale

Group 1 win in the spring. “He owes me
absolutely nothing this horse and I just don’t
want to take any sort of risk with him,” Pagan
told Racing.com. “I had every intention of
running him this autumn as he went out (for
a spell) and put on 35 kilograms and I thought
he’d be right to go again. He’d been in work
about six weeks but he’s such a young horse
and I’m hoping we can have him racing at
four and five so I am going to look after him.
I want to give him every chance to get to the
best he can be. He’s fully qualified for the
Cups next spring and we’ll just let him rest
and focus on that.”
Defibrillate heading to Adelaide Cup Kiwi-bred horses have had a strong recent
record in the Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m)
and Patrick Payne is looking to extend that
run in this year’s renewal of the race with
his in-form gelding Defibrillate (Shocking).
The six-year-old has won two of his three
starts this preparation, including the Lord
Stakes (Listed, 1700m) at Caulfield on Boxing
Day and the Lexus Handicap (2000m) at
Flemington on Saturday. Payne was pleased
with the win last weekend and said his
charge has come through the run well. “The
race worked out really well for him, he was
ridden really well,” he said. “The horse is
a lovely horse to deal with. I appreciate
Richy (Graham Richardson) sending him
over. He is a really nice horse and I don’t
think that will be his last win. He came
over in good form and he has been in good
form all of his life really. That was his third
run this preparation and he has pulled up
fantastic.” Formerly trained in New Zealand
by his co-breeder and part-owner Graham
Richardson, Defibrillate won two of his
three starts on home soil before transferring
to Payne’s care, where he has won on a
further five occasions. Victorious in his only
stakes test to date, Payne is now eyeing some
Group targets, including the Adelaide Cup in
March. “There is the Adelaide Cup coming up
and there are some beautiful Saturday races
for him from now until then. We will just see
how he goes. We will quietly head down that
path,” he said.
Rawiller injured in Bunbury fall Brad Rawiller is facing up to a stint on the
sidelines after he sustained a broken collarbone
and punctured lung in a race fall at Bunbury
yesterday. The 42-year-old was last night in
hospital awaiting the results of scans on his neck.
Rawiller went down in the second race on the card
after his mount, Imprudent (Oratorio), stumbled
about 200 metres from the winning post.
RV stewards defend Callow decision Racing Victoria stewards yesterday defended
their decision to question Noel Callow at Kilmore
the previous day following a post on Twitter
alleging alcohol and drug abuse. Chief steward
Robert Cram said it was part of a stewards’
job to follow up information, while admitting
that social media did not always provide a
credible source. “On receiving the information,
stewards sought to clarify it with Noel at the
racecourse,” Cram told Racing.com. “From time
to time things like this come up and sometimes
stewards have to try and assess the veracity of the
information and whether there is any credibility
to it. I think unfortunately in this modern world
with social commentary, these things can arise.
It is a source of information but it’s not always
credible information.” The Victorian Jockeys’
Association is seeking a meeting with Racing
Victoria’s integrity department following the
incident, where Callow was drug tested and put
on a breathalyser before he went out and won on
the favourite Diamonds’n’stones (Brazen Beau) in
the second race on the card.
Nugent suspended for Kilmore ride Teo Nugent has been suspended for nine
meetings after being found guilty of careless
riding on board runner-up Quantrell (Captain
Gerrard) in the race won by Diamonds’n’stones.
The stewards found that Nugent allowed his
mount to shift in passing the 150-metre mark
when not clear of the eventual third, Albanian
Eagle (Dundeel), which was checked and lost its
rightful running. Nugent’s suspension starts at
midnight on January 16 and expires at midnight
on January 24. He will miss three metro and six
provincial meetings.
Adkins to resume trackwork on Monday Andrew Adkins will ride trackwork at Randwick
on Monday as the Group 1-winning rider moves
a step closer to resuming race riding following
the injuries he suffered in a horror fall at
Rosehill back in July. Adkins suffered a broken
leg, collarbone and ribs, as well as a punctured
lung, in the incident which resulted in Hugh
Bowman picking up a six-week suspension.
Adkins, who spent more than two weeks in
hospital recovering from his injuries, hopes to
be back in competitive action late next month.
NEW ZEALAND
Enzo seeks Telegraph three-peat Enzo’s Lad (Testa Rossa) will jump from
barrier three when he attempts to record his
third victory in the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m)
at Trentham on Saturday. The Michael
and Matthew Pitman-trained gelding won
consecutive editions in 2018 and 2019, before
finishing runner-up last year behind Avantage
(Fastnet Rock). He will meet the talented mare
again on Saturday, although connections
believe he is a lot more forward than he was
12 months ago. “He just seems to thrive at this
time of year,” Matthew Pitman said. “Getting
down to Waikouaiti certainly helps and he
loves Trentham. He is better than last year
when he did all that travelling. He went to Hong
Kong and England, and then had to have a big
break when he came back. That meant we were
chasing to get his fitness where we wanted
it to be. This year he is at a similar place to
when he won both Telegraphs before. He is an
eight-year-old now but he doesn’t know that. If
anything, he is stronger than when he won his
first one. We are really happy with the horse.”
Basarwa primed for Levin Classic Guy Lowry reckons he has talented three-year-
old Basarwa (Atlante) in the best condition
possible going into Saturday’s Levin Classic
(Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham. In two starts to date
Lowry, who trains in partnership with Grant
Cullen, has produced Basarwa for a debut win
at Hastings and a second placing to race rival

Invisible Spirit (Charm Spirit) at Trentham.
“I’m happy with him,” Lowry said. “He had a
1000-metre jump-out on January 5. He was
only just beaten and hit the line really hard so
he’s fit enough. I’m as happy with him now as
I was when he won his first race and when he
ran second at his second start. He’s been aimed
at this and I know they have all probably been
aimed for it, but this has been his target race
since day one and he’s ready to give a good
account of himself.” Bred and raced by Lib
Petagna and the Perry Family Trust, Basarwa
will be out to emulate his sire Atlante (Fastnet
Rock) as a Group 1-winning three-year-old
over 1600 metres in the same Petagna colours.
Atlante, a NZD$200,000 Ready To Run Sale
purchase at Karaka for Wairarapa bloodstock
agent Bruce Perry, stood for two seasons at
Waikato’s Mapperley Stud before his death.
“Basarwa is still a green and raw horse but
I’ve got no doubt the mile will suit him better
than 1400 metres. He was flat footed when they
quickened the other day,” Lowry continued.
“He’s worked up well and is really bright. I can’t
fault him. I’m just really looking forward to him
running in it.”
Beaufort provide international flavour at Karaka While international buyers won’t be able to be
present at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National
Yearling Sales later this month, Beaufort Downs
will ensure there is still some international
flavour at Karaka. Beaufort Downs principals,
Annabel Wigley and Olly Tuthill, will offer an
eight-strong Book 1 Sale draft, including two
yearlings out of mares the couple sourced in
England. “These will be our first yearlings out of
the mares we imported,” said Wigley, who spent
time in the United Kingdom representing New
Zealand as a top-level eventer. “One of them is
a Street Cry mare called Fiendish, we have got
an Iffraaj filly (Lot 399) out of her. The other one
is called Highly Valued, who is a High Chaparral
mare, and we are offering a Per Incanto filly
(Lot 442) out of her. It’s pretty exciting we are
offering the first foals out of them and they
are lovely fillies, and we are really happy with
the mares.” Wigley is also buoyant about the
quality of the rest of her draft. “We bought a
few of the mares in Australia and we left them
over there to get in-foal, so some of our draft are
by Australian stallions,” she said. “We have got
a Lonhro colt (Lot 498) out of an Exceed and
Excel winning mare. He is a nicely put together
colt and he is the first foal out of her. We are
pretty excited about him, he is just a ball of
muscle really. We have got a lovely So You Think
filly (Lot 344), and we sold a half-sister to her
last year. This one is a really nice filly. The No
Nay Never (Lot 395) is a really nice filly as well.
We are really happy with all of our draft heading
up to Karaka.”
Derryn’s first yearlings to go under the hammerWhile Zed (Zabeel) continues to put
Grangewilliam Stud’s name in lights on both
sides of the Tasman, the next generation gets
its time to shine with Derryn’s (Hinchinbrook)
first yearlings going under the hammer at
Karaka 2021. Derryn has proven to be a popular
addition to the stallion roster at Grangewilliam,
where he stands for a service fee of NZD$5,000.
“He’s been really well supported by breeders,”
Grangewilliam’s Mark Corcoran said. “He
served 105 mares in his first season, then 120 in
his second. This spring he served just under 90.
So he’s going to have every chance, with some
good numbers and some nice-quality mares in
his books as well. It’s really exciting to have his
first yearlings about to go through the ring. He’s
a lovely horse himself, and he’s passing that
quality on to his progeny. He’s really stamped
them with his strength and athleticism.” There
are a couple of yearlings in particular that
Corcoran will be watching closely at Karaka
later this month. “My pick of his fillies at Karaka
is one that’s in Book 2 - Lot 894,” he said.
“She’s out of a Bachelor Duke mare, Miss Isle,
who’s a stakes-placed half-sister to Ken and
Bev Kelso’s exciting horse Levante. I think she
looks quite a lot like Levante, and she’s got a
lovely temperament and a great walk. I think
she’s an extremely nice filly. As far as his colts
are concerned, I like Lot 500 in Book 1 - the
colt out of La Petite. This colt’s a half-brother
to Lightning Jack, who won a couple of nice
Guineas races in the South Island and placed
in the Wellington Guineas. He’s an outstanding
colt.”

ride in Britain from Saturday after the British
Horseracing Authority yesterday released a
number of changes to the race programme.
The decisions have been taken by the racing
industry's Covid-19 steering group which
includes representatives from racecourses and
horsemen. Amateurs are classed as grassroots
sports participants and the new rules are in line
with British government restrictions around
the definition of elite sport, and the associated
suspension of grassroots sport

TREVOR MARSHALLSEA | @ANZ_NEWS
It’s not often in racing that people are
allowed two bites of the cherry. So when
Widden Stud had theirs two years ago,
they weren’t going to miss out.
The results of their determination were
shown – in rather spectacular fashion – at this
week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale.
In 2018, Widden were the under-bidders
when the stakes-winning O’Reilly mare Bonny
O’Reilly was sold for $825,000 at the Magic
Millions National Broodmare Sale. A year later,
after the mare’s new owner Damion Flower’s
fall from grace on drugs smuggling charges,
Widden had the chance to buy her again – now
in foal to Snitzel. This time, they would not miss
out, though it did cost them $1.2 million.
In time, out came a magnificent brown colt,
and on day one at the Gold Coast this week, he
topped the charts when sold for $1.9 million –
more than double the second-highest lot.
He’s the first foal of Bonny O’Reilly, so
there’s a not inconsiderable amount of risk
in that outlay, by the Coolmore-Chris Waller
stallion syndicate. Bonny O’Reilly had 16 starts
for eight wins – six at metro level – claiming a
dash of black type in winning in Listed class at
Doomben.
But there’s a lot of historical strength in
the pedigree – laced with a rich Waikato Stud
heritage of Centaine, Pins and O’Reilly - and
some very recent excitement as well
. Only three generations back in the female
line, you’ll find a coveted blue hen. Centaine
mare Escada, who first raced as Centenaire in
New Zealand, won four from 23 and was Group
3-placed for trainer Pat Hyland when second in
Moonee Valley’s 1996 Tesio Stakes. Her deeds
and legacy at stud have far outweighed her
performances on the track.
Her third named foal was sprinting star
Glamour Puss (Tale Of The Cat), a multiple
stakes-winning sprinter who raced in the
Waikato Stud colours for Danny O’Brien. She
took two Group 1s in 2005 in the Goodwood
Handicap and Flemington’s Salinger Stakes.
The following year she was second in the TJ
Smith Stakes (relegating Snitzel to third), before
bowing out with an assault on the Royal Ascot
sprint double – running seventh in the King’s
Stand behind Takeover Target, and 10th in
what was then still known as the Golden Jubilee
Stakes.
Two foals later Escada went to Carnegie
and did it again, producing the outstanding
Vision And Power, Joe Pride’s gelding who
took Sydney’s George Ryder-Doncaster Group
1 double in 2009, having run second in the
Chipping Norton a month earlier.
Back to her second foal, Escada had gone
to O’Reilly, and produced the filly Rare Insight,
a John Hawkes-trained winner of the Stan
Fox Stakes in 2002. At stud, the excitement
really started, with Rare Insight throwing the
exceptional Steps In Time (Danehill Dancer),
a multiple stakes winner, again for Joe Pride,
including the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill in
2014.
Carrying on the family line into the present
day, Rare Insight’s unraced daughter Chanel’s
Choice (Redoute’s Choice), is now the dam of
Whimsical (Savabeel), who last month made it
two wins from three starts in the Eulogy Stakes
at Awapuni.
After Vision And Power, Escada twice went
back to O’Reilly and produced Escadaire, a
sprinting gelding who was a dual stakes winner
in Perth, and Oh So Glam, who has thrown the
multiple stakes-placed gelding Torgersen, by
Pins.
And similarly, it was Escada’s mating with
Pins that produced a mare at the crux of this
story, Pretty. While managing only a Ballarat
maiden win, for Danny O’Brien, at stud Pretty

was tried along a trusted path in this family
by going to O’Reilly for her second named
foal - Bonny O’Reilly – whose first foal made
headlines on Tuesday.
Giving that colt’s pedigree a hefty recent
update have been Bonny O’Reilly’s younger
half-siblings, a pair of full sisters by Waikato’s
Ocean Park - Pretty To Sea and Evie Girl.
Pretty To Sea ran second in the Adrian
Knox Stakes of 2018, before being exported to
New Zealand where she won in Listed class a
year later. Evie Girl won two of her six starts, at
Moonee Valley and Mornington, this summer,
before sadly dying from a suspected heart
attack yesterday.
Pretty To Sea ran second in the Adrian Knox
Stakes of 2018, before being exported to New
Zealand where she won in Listed class a year
later. Evie Girl has won two of her five starts, at
Moonee Valley and Mornington, this summer.
Widden’s owner Antony Thompson might
not have planned Bonny O’Reilly’s mating with
Snitzel, but he’s certainly a fan of it – in theory
and in practice.
“It looked a good nick and an ideal mating,”
Thompson tells ANZ Bloodstock News.
“O’Reilly mares work with most things, and
they certainly seem to work with Snitzel.”
Thompson cites two stars of last autumn
from similar crosses - Group 2 winner Splintex
(by Redoute’s Choice’s Snitzel out of O’Reilly’s
Acquired) and Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
winner Shout The Bar (by Redoute’s Choice’s
Not A Single Doubt out of O’Reilly’s Drinks All
Round).
The physicals also worked well with the day
one sale-topper.
“He wasn’t too big, which I think is good
with a Snitzel,” Thompson says. “He’s got great
quality, a really striking outlook, an incredible
stride, and I guess it was the way he moved
and handled himself that got everyone in. He
looked like a lovely fast sprinter and he’s got a
stunning big Waikato pedigree behind him.
“Gary Chittick has really developed the
family and Mark Chittick has taken that on.
The success they had with Glamour Puss, right
through Centaine-Pins-O’Reilly, it really says
‘Waikato Stud’ in this day and age. We were
really thrilled to get into that family. Bonny
O’Reilly is a really exciting mare to have at
home in your paddock - a mare who could
really develop into a blue hen for us.”
Just two lots after Bonny O’Reilly’s colt,
Widden celebrated another windfall, through
one of the richest female families in the stud
book, when their I Am Invincible-Bonaria filly
went for the day’s second-top price of $975,000,
to Busuttin Racing.
The line barely needs an introduction,
springing from the Last Tycoon mare Decidity,
who produced a host of stars including Legally
Bay (Snippets), dam of Merchant Navy, Jolie
Bay, et al. There are more recent updates
too, with Legally Bay’s half-sister Chatoyant
throwing Godolphin two-year-old Paulele,
who’s unbeaten from two starts, and Legally
Bay’s daughter Bayrock throwing Hindaam, a
Group 3 winner at Sandown in November.
Legally Bay’s half-sister Bonaria (Redoute’s
Choice) won Flemington’s Myer Classic (Gr
1, 1600m) in 2014, and two other stakes races
to stamp herself as Decidity’s finest racetrack
product.
Bonaria’s first foal to race, however, hinted
at no great things in her career at stud. The son
of Sebring fetched Widden $700,000 when sold
to Shadwell Stud at Sydney Easter 2018.
Named Alkaamel, the gelding had three
unplaced runs last year for the Hayes-Hayes-
Dabernig stable before being sold on for $7,500,
and was last seen running fifth in a Wyong
maiden.
Thompson was confident of a vastly better
product by I Am Invincible, and Tuesday
brought a good dose of proof.
“Looking at her, she’s just a really stunning
filly,” Thompson says. “She’s got an amazing
depth of girth, a great presence, an enormous
amount of power. She looks a fair bit like
another I Am Invincible filly, Loving Gaby, as
just that big, strong fast type of filly.
“The Sebring gelding probably didn’t
have the same oomph as this filly. But
certainly, I Am Invincible is doing a great job
with his fillies.
“This filly is a daughter of a Group 1 winner
who was by Redoute’s Choice, and to have a
filly with the pedigree she’s got – there’s so
much happening in that family - she’s not only
an exciting racing prospect but has enormous
residual value.”

Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte
Farms ranks as one of the world's
most prestigious and productive
breeding operations. It has few
peers, with only perhaps the Aga Khan Studs
and Coolmore able to match its strength in
depth and achievements.
At the last count, Juddmonte had bred 113
individual Group/Grade 1 winners of 220 elite
races, including 28 Classic winners. Its produce
includes household names such as Frankel
(Galileo), Enable (Nathaniel) and Zafonic
(Gone West).
The seeds of such spectacular success
were sown in the 1970s when the young
owner, a scion of the Saudi royal family but
self-styled with typical humility as 'Mr' Khalid
Abdullah rather than 'Prince', recruited former
Newmarket trainer Humphrey Cottrill to act
as his agent in order to realise lofty long-term
ambitions in racing.
Cottrill bought Abdullah's first four
yearlings at Newmarket in 1977. None proved to
be up to scratch on the track, but in the following
year he and Jeremy Tree visited Keeneland and
purchased a son of In Reality (Intentionally)
for US$225,000. That colt, named Known Fact,
took the Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) and was
promoted to first place in the English 2,000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) upon the disqualification of
Nureyev (Northern Dancer) to become the first
Arab-owned Classic winner in Britain.
Charming Native (Princely Native) had
become the very first horse to carry the now
instantly recognisable 'green, pink sash and
cap, white sleeves' into a winner's enclosure
when successful at Windsor in 1979. A month
later, Abeer (Dewan) landed the Queen Mary
Stakes (Gr 2, 5f ) to notch the first of many
Royal Ascot – and Group race – victories for
Abdullah.
Another notable first was provided by Fine
Edge in 1982. The son of Sharpen Up (Blade),
a future runner-up in the William Hill Sprint
Championship (Gr 1, 5f) (now Nunthorpe), was
the owner's debut homebred winner. He hailed
from a crop of foals produced by just nine
broodmares, five of whom had been sourced
from Gerald Leigh.
Abdullah was unstinting in his quest for
the best when laying down the foundations of
his racing and breeding empire, and during
the late 1970s and early 1980s he made many
big-money auction acquisitions and judicious
private purchases of other breeders' stock.
“All the credit must go to Prince Khalid,
who was prepared to invest very substantial
sums in the best bloodstock, wonderful farms
and excellent staff,” trainer Guy Harwood once
reflected in an interview. “He started with the
best, and if the best was available, he’d buy it.”
Under the guidance of James Delahooke,
stud and racing manager from 1979 until 1985,
future Coronation Cup (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Prix de
l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) hero Rainbow
Quest (Blushing Groom) was bought as a
yearling at Fasig-Tipton for $950,000 in 1982,
and the legendary Dancing Brave (Lyphard)
was added to the team in the same location
two years later for $200,000. The dams of
both Rainbow Quest and Dancing Brave were
eventually added to the Juddmonte broodmare
band.
Another Kentucky yearling purchase of 1982
was the His Majesty (Ribot) filly out of Northern
Dancer's (Nearctic) half-sister Spring Adieu
(Buckpasser) at $350,000, while mares were
procured from the nurseries of Jock Whitney,
Herbert Schnapka and Robert Sangster, with
the odd filly in training purchased along the
way, including Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f)
runner-up Slightly Dangerous (Roberto).
The wisdom of those early acquisitions
was borne out not only on the track, but also
in the breeding shed. Mated with Known Fact,
Slightly Dangerous produced the top-class
miler Warning, while the same mare's liaison
with Dancing Brave produced Derby winner
Commander In Chief.
Slightly Dangerous, a Roberto (Hail To
Reason) half-sister to the dam of Rainbow
Quest, was an exceptional broodmare for
Juddmonte, also producing US Grade 1

heroine Yashmak ( Danzig), Derby runner-up
Dushyantor (Sadler's Wells) and Irish Derby (Gr
1, 1m 4f) second Deploy (Shirley Heights), who
features as damsire of one of the pre-eminent
sires of the age in Dubawi (Dubai Millennium).
Dancing Brave experienced modest success
as a sire with his early runners and was later
sold to stand in Japan, but his third-last crop
conceived in Britain included Commander
In Chief and another Classic winner for
Juddmonte in Wemyss Bight.
Irish Oaks victress Wemyss Bight was out
of 310,000gns Tattersalls yearling purchase
Bahamian, a Lingfield Oaks Trial (im 4f, Listed)
scorer who was herself a daughter of Mill Reef
(Never Bend) and the Classic-placed Sorbus
(Busted). She produced Abdullah's multiple
top-level winner Beat Hollow (Sadler’s Wells)
at paddocks.
Wemyss Bight's sister Hope, also by
Dancing Brave, distinguished herself as a most
important mare for Juddmonte by producing
Oasis Dream (Green Desert) – a champion two-
year-old and sprinter who has developed into
a blue-chip sire, supplying 17 Group/Grade 1
winners including the outstanding racemare
Midday (Midsummer) – and the Poule d'Essai
des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Zenda
(Zamindar), who is the dam of the brilliant
miler Kingman (Invincible Spirit), an exciting
young sire who threw Abdullah's blisteringly
fast Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) winner Calyx
from his first crop of two-year-olds.
Rainbow Quest, meanwhile, supplied three
superb talents in his first crop – Abdullah's first
Derby winner Quest For Fame, the Irish Oaks
winner Knight's Baroness and Arc laureate
Saumarez. The stallion also gave Juddmonte
their top-class talents Armiger, Raintrap
and Sunshack, although his most important
legacy was arguably as a broodmare sire, his
daughters producing the likes of Kingston Hill
(Mastercraftsman), Kris Kin (Kris S), Look Here
(Hernando), North Light (Danehill) and Rakti
(Polish Precedent), albeit for other breeders.
The His Majesty filly out of Spring Adieu
turned out to be Razyana, who failed to get her
head in front in her racing days but produced as
her first foal the 2,000 Guineas third and Haydock
Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f) winner Danehill. The son
of Danzig (Northern Dancer) played his part in
a rare questionable call made by Juddmonte,
as he was sold at the end of his racing career to
Coolmore – for the admittedly not insignificant
sum of £4 million, according to reports – before
setting a record for number of Group/Grade
1 winners, with 84 top-level scorers sired in
a stellar dual-hemisphere stallion career. Of
course that decision did not preclude Juddmonte
sending mares to Danehill, and they did so with
remarkable results.
Success in the breeding shed continued to
snowball, and Abdullah cemented his status as
one of the world's foremost owner-breeders in
the 1990s through the aforementioned Quest
For Fame, Commander In Chief, Wemyss Bight,
Raintrap and Sunshack, as well as the likes
of All At Sea (Riverman), Distant View (Mr.
Prospector), Reams Of Verse (Nureyev) and
Toulon (Top Ville).
By 1999 Abdullah completed a nap hand
of Classics when Wince – a daughter of Selkirk
(Sharpen Up) who would subsequently produce
the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Quiff
(Sadler’s Wells) at stud – became his first 1,000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner.
But arguably the iconic Juddmonte horse of
the decade was Zafonic, the scintillating two-
year-old talent who stormed to a wide-margin
victory in the 2,000 Guineas. By Gone West (Mr.
Prospector) out of Zaizafon (Mofida) – one of
the mares acquired from Sangster – he looked
to have got one as good as himself in his first
crop in the seven-length Dewhurst (Gr 1, 7f)
winner Xaar, although the son disappointed at
odds-on in the Newmarket Classic.
Zafonic died in a freak accident in a shuttle
trip to Arrowfield Stud in Australia aged only 12,
although Juddmonte and other breeders found
compensation in the horse's less talented and
more inexpensively priced brother Zamindar,
the source of homebred Group 1 winners
Timepiece and Zenda and the Aga Khan's
phenomenal filly Zarkava.
As the Juddmonte broodmare band
matured, with those high-class fillies and
their relations retired to reproduce and the
more lowly achievers weeded out, momentum
behind the racing operation grew in the new
millennium.
Hasili – a French Listed winner by Kahyasi
(Ile De Bourbon) out of Kerali, a daughter of
another purchase from Sangster, Cheveley Park
Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Sookera (Roberto) –
gained immortality by producing five individual
top-flight 1 winners, not including Dansili
(Danehill), who was six-times Group/Grade 1
placed and atoned for that solecism by siring
21 elite winners as a member of the Juddmonte
stallion ranks. Dansili and siblings Banks Hill,
Cacique, Champs Elysees and Intercontinental
were all by the discarded Danehill.
Another important family of recent times
has been that descending from foundation mare
Media Luna (Star Appeal), runner-up in the 1984
Oaks. Her daughter, the Park Hill Stakes (Gr 1,
1m 6.5f) winner Eva Luna (Alleged), produced
Soviet Moon (Sadler's Wells), in a foal sharing
arrangement with Coolmore. Soviet Moon –
whose Group 1-winning brother Brian Boru
raced for Coolmore as part of the same deal –
delivered Abdullah's third Derby victor, Workforce
(King’s Best), who would also land the Arc.

It was a similar foal sharing arrangement with
Coolmore that gave Juddmonte access to Sadler's
Wells' great son Galileo, from whom Abdullah
bred his masterpiece, Frankel. The third dam of
the unbeaten dual world champion, now admired
as one of the world's leading young stallions, was
one of the mares purchased from Jock Whitney,
Rockfest (Stage Door Johnny).
Frankel exemplified how quickly
Juddmonte bloodlines have taken root and
transmitted powerful tendrils. He is out of
Kind, a daughter of Danehill, while Kind is out
of Rainbow Lake, by Rainbow Quest.
Juddmonte-nurtured names proliferate in
the pedigrees of other recent stars for the stud,
too. Breeders' Cup Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner
Expert Eye is by outside stallion Acclamation
(Royal Applause) but his first two dams are
by the homebreds Dansili and Distant View;
Calyx's dam is a daughter of Observatory out of
a mare by Quest For Fame.
The extraordinary Enable has fewer
Juddmonte stallions in her genealogy but her
damline is firmly anchored in the stud's history,
with her fourth dam Fleet Girl one of the few
Schnapka broodmares still represented in the
organisation's stud book.
The highest tribute that can be paid to
Abdullah's triumph as an owner-breeder is
that purchases of young stock have become
rare, simply because they
are so unnecessary; the
home stallion squadron is
second to none in strength
in depth, containing as
it does the proven Oasis
Dream and exciting
younger names Frankel
and Kingman, while the
broodmare herd is replete
with high-achieving
racemares, accomplished
producers and relations
to both.
The US branch of
Juddmonte has gone to
market in recent years,
and found the champion
and record North American-trained prize-
money earner Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song),
although Abdullah's colt Tacitus – by Tapit out
of homebred multiple Grade 1 winner Close
Hatches (First Defence), whose granddam
Silver Star is a Zafonic sister to Xaar – shows that
the stateside breeding programme functions
rather well too.
In its fifth decade of operation Juddmonte
has defied repeated rumours of a wholesale
dispersal although it has recently made
rationalisations, streamlining the mare band
to around 200 head and selling Abdullah's first
farm at Wargrave in Berkshire.
It is still very much business as usual for
the operation though and the central tenet of
that business, authored by Abdullah, has been
a laser-like focus on quality: quality racecourse
performers, quality bloodlines, quality land
for youngstock and quality staff for providing
management, advice and stockmanship.
From Dancing Brave and Rainbow Quest through
Zafonic and Xaar to Frankel, Kingman and Enable,
Juddmonte have proved that quality begets quality.

Teaming with the prolific Joao
Moreira, Peter Ho struck a David
and Goliath blow for the smallest
stable in Hong Kong by lodging
his 600th career winner, prompting the
veteran trainer to laud his former champions
Mr Medici (Medicean) and Packing Winner
(Zabeel).
Elated after Baby Storm (Redwood) won the
Class 5 Wistaria Handicap (1650m) at Happy
Valley, Ho reflected on the peaks and troughs
of a career which include producing elite
performers, contesting a Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,
3200m) and also the challenges of competing
against much larger yards.
Ho has 28 horses in his care – under half the
maximum quota allowed for single-site trainers
– while bigger operations, with bases at both
Sha Tin and Conghua, can accommodate 70.
Posting his seventh victory for the season,
60-year-old Ho remains optimistic he can again
rise to the prominence Mr Medici and Packing
Winner once delivered.
“Everybody goes through the good times,
the bad times,” he said. “I have to keep working
- I enjoy my work.
“I love horses, every day I enjoy my work. I
have no complaints - this is my favourite (job). I
can’t get a better job.”
Ho campaigned Mr Medici, Hong Kong’s
champion stayer in 2009/10, in the 2010
Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), finishing sixth
behind Descarado (High Chaparral), and the
2010 Melbourne Cup, crossing in 10th place
behind Americain (Dynaformer).
“I learnt so much from Mr Medici,” Ho said.
“Hong Kong racing is the best and I’ve learned a
lot here. Thank you to the Jockey Club for giving
me the chance, the opportunities to learn from
everybody, to learn from owners, learn from
horses.
“Actually, I started in 1997 with seven
horses – seven lame horses.
“Now, in 2021, I look back and I really
appreciate the (fact) the Hong Kong Jockey
Club looked after me so well.
“This (Baby Storm’s win) is a good memory
for me. Joao did a good job and he deserved it.”
Paul O’Sullivan hailed Chad Schofield’s
initiative after the jockey launched a decisive
mid-race move before winning the Class 4
Verbena Handicap (2200m) on Victorious
Seeker (Sebring).
“He’s like every jockey here in Hong Kong -
they’re world-class, they take their opportunities
where they see them,” O’Sullivan said.
“There was no discussion about those
tactics before the race but if you look at the
sectionals, they ran the first 1000 metres pretty
quick and then naturally enough they buttoned
off and as they did, he got going.
“He’s (Schofield) ridden the horse a few
times – he’s a pretty one-paced horse – and I
think the fact he knew the horse pretty well is
why he made that decision.
“You’re a hero or zero when you make those
decisions. He had enough experience to know
that when he did take off, you keep going.”
The victory continued Schofield’s upward
trajectory after Sunday’s success on Speed Fay
Fay (Hinchinbrook) at Sha Tin.
“Nice to get a winner for Paul, I haven’t had
one for a while,” Schofield said.
“This horse, he just stays like a poor relative,
really. He was out the back.
“They went pretty quick the first bit and
when they slowed down, there was just no
point me coming back with them because I was
out the back last and he just mathematically
had no chance from where he was.
“So, when the pace slackened, I just let him
bowl right around the field. Once he got to the
lead, it was just a matter of keeping him going.
He was fit, well prepared. It was a good win.”
Moreira, on Baby Storm and Smiling City
(So You Think), and Zac Purton on Handsome
Bo Bo (Helmet) and Noble Birth (Per Incanto)
split riding honours with a double each, leaving
the Brazilian with a 68-49 lead in the jockeys’
championship.
Douglas Whyte was the most successful
trainer at the meeting, logging a double with
Simply Fluke (Keeper) and Smiling City.

by the addition of several farm dispersals, the
atmosphere on the grounds was one of frenzied
activity as horses changed hands for strong

A total of 247 horses from 318 offered
changed hands for gross receipts of
USD$23,319,400 (approx. AUD$30,078,000). The
median was USD$40,000 (approx. AUD$51,595)
and the average was USD$94,411 (approx.
AUD$121,796). The 71 horses that did not sell
represented an RNA rate of 22.3 per cent.
During the 2020 session, 225 horses were
sold for receipts of USD$17,007,300 at an average
of USD$75,588 and median of USD$40,000. The
78 that did not sell represented an RNA rate of
25.7 per cent.
The belle of Tuesday's ball was most
certainly Sam-Son Farm, which sold 21 mares
through their dispersal for receipts of USD$6.73
million (approx. AUD$8.69 million). That
number would make the historic Ontario farm
the leading consignor on the day. But while its
success in the ring was certainly a testament to
the sheer quality of the farm's breeding stock,
the auction was still an emotional moment for
the staff, as they slowly learned to say goodbye
to nearly half a century of top-level breeding
and racing.
"The business of the game and just trying to
get everything ready, we've worked so hard to
do this we haven't really given ourselves time
to absorb it all," said Sam-Son Farm manager
David Whitford. "There's a lot of pressure to do
things right, especially for the family. They've
been in the game for 50 years and we don't want
to mess that up.
“There's a great legacy there, and we felt
the pressure of doing that. I wasn't there when
the mares loaded up on the farm to come
down here. My staff back at the farm...it might
be hitting me right now. It'll be bittersweet for
sure."
From buyers, to consignors, to general
onlookers, the praise for Sam-Son Farm and
its legacy continued throughout Tuesday's
session.
"They've spent a life's work building these
families and I'm sure it's mixed emotions for a lot
of the guys working there," said Elliott Walden of
WinStar Farm after signing the ticket on Lot 588,
a USD$310,000 (approx. AUD$400,000) Tiznow
(Cee’s Tizzy) mare named Dancing Fancy out of
Canadian champion Dancethruthedawn (Mr
Prospector).
"Dave Whitford, I talked to him yesterday,
it's like seeing his kids go. He takes some solace
in the fact that they're going to good homes and
he can still cheer them on and the whole team
can. They've done a great job over a number of
years and they have a lot of nice mares."
"Great respect to them (Sam-Son Farm),"
said John Sikura of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa,
who purchased two Sam-Son mares from
the same family (Lot 598 and Lot 637),
for receipts of USD$1.43 million (approx.
AUD$1.85 million).
"Bidding as an opportunist to get in
those pedigrees, but also a tribute to (Sam-
Son founder) Ernie Samuel and all the people
that put Canadian racing on the map. I'm a
Canadian and proud that I grew up in the era of
(E P Taylor's farm) Windfield.
“Sam-Son Farm is as good and successful
as anybody in the world doing what they did.
For me it's really sort of a claim of heritage and
a chance to get involved in things that I think
could really be important in the future, and
breed to horses that we stand and have access
to, and hope to revive those pedigrees, and be
significant either on the track or in the sales
ring."
The highest price for any Sam-Son mare
on Tuesday came in the form of Lot 587,
Danceforthecause, a ten-year-old daughter
of Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat) and already
a proven producer. Offered in foal to Lane's
End's Twirling Candy (Candy Ride), the bay is a
daughter of Dancethruthestorm (Thunder Gulch)
and a sister to stakes winner Grand Style.
Danceforthecause's second dam is Sam-
Son Farm's illustrious mare Dance Smartly
(Danzig), winner of the 1991 Canadian Triple
Crown who was named champion two-year-
old, three-year-old and Horse of the Year in

Canada, as well as champion three-year-old in
the United States. The late Dance Smartly was
also a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Smart Strike
(Mr Prospector), who twice earned the leading
sire title in the US during his 18-year tenure as a
Lane's End stallion.
Say the Word (More Than Ready ),
Danceforthecause's first foal, won the 2020
renewal of the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (Gr
1, 12f) at Woodbine and has been stakes-placed
on the turf on four other occasions. Her second
foal, Rideforthecause (Candy Ride ), won the
2020 Canadian Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Woodbine.
"I thought she was a really beautiful mare,"
said bloodstock agent Alex Solis, who signed
the ticket for Danceforthecause on behalf of
Gainesway Farm. "She has great balance and
obviously she's been a great producer already.
I think this is the best Sam-Son family there is
and with Dance Smartly as the second dam and
Smart Strike is right there on the page, I thought
she was a very exciting prospect. The price, I
thought, was fair. The mare is ten years old, so
I thought it was very fair. The right horse always
brings a lot of money."
Slightly further down the purchase line,
bloodstock agent Nobu Araki was finally able to
walk away a winner when he purchased Sam-
Son mare Mythical Mission (Giant’s Causeway)
for USD$575,000 (approx. AUD$741,500) on
behalf of Shimokobe Farm/Polo Green Stable.
Consigned as Lot 754, the daughter of
Giant's Causeway is out of the Miswaki (Mr
Prospector) mare Misty Mission, a half-sister to
Canadian champion Comet Shine (Fappiano).
Mythical Mission is also a sister to two-time
Canadian champion Irish Mission and a half-
sister to stakes winner French Beret (Broad
Brush). Mythical Mission was offered in foal
to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah
(Pioneerof The Nile).
"We bid on ($925,000) Regal Glory (Lot
403)," said Araki. "We liked her but couldn't get
her. This was the second mare for us today. Of
course, American Pharoah is good in Japan. We
bought the mare because of her family and her
physical. I wish Mr Shimokobe could come into
town but, of course, a lot of Japanese buyers
couldn't come.
"The mare will stay here in the US. Shipping
is not until next month but she'll have the baby
by then. Then she'll be bred to something else
and ship back to Japan. But she will foal here."
Sharing the top price for the day was Lot
403, Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom), who
was consigned by Lane's End, agent for the
complete dispersal of the estate of Paul Pompa
Jr. Out of the More Than Ready (Southern Halo)
mare Mary's Follies, three-time Graded stakes
winner Regal Glory was purchased by Peter
Brant's White Birch Farm and will return to
training with Chad Brown.
The Pompa dispersal saw 20 horses sell for
receipts of $4.037 million (approx. AUD$5.21
million).
"The power of the dispersals was obvious
today with nine of the ten top prices going to the
dispersals," said Keeneland's director of sales
operations Geoffrey Russell. "It was bittersweet
but we appreciate the trust they put in us to put
this on today.
"The opportunity - especially with the
Sam-Son dispersal - to get into these mares has
been limited over the years. The same is true
with the mares of Mr Pompa. They come from
strong female families and as Shannon (Arvin,
Keeneland president and CEO) said, breeders
are looking for 'blue skies' ahead and they have
to have the product to produce yearlings to
sell."
As for the short yearlings, the top seller
was Lot 660, a filly from the first crop of Lane's
End stallion City Of Light (Quality Road), who
was purchased by Larry Best's OXO Equine for
USD$400,000 (approx. AUD$515,832).
Bred in Kentucky by Baumann Stables,
Aaron Sones, and Eric Crawford, the filly is out
of the Bernardini (A P Indy) mare I'll Show Me,
a half-sister to champion and 2008 Kentucky
Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) winner Proud Spell (Proud
Citizen).
