Assignment 1: About Endangered Species

What Does it Mean to be Endangered?

A plant or animal species is endangered if it is at risk of disappearing from the earth. When a

species disappears, it is extinct. Extinction is forever. No extinct animal can ever come back.

Sometimes a species is not currently at risk of becoming extinct, but people think it will be soon.

These species are called threatened. In the past 100 years, many different kinds of birds, insects,

mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and plants are no longer on earth. For example:

Species Country Last Seen

Dodo bird Republic of Mauritius 1680

Sea Mink Canada 1894

Falklands Wolf Falkland Islands 1876

Bennett's Seaweed Australia 1885

Yunnan Box Turtle China 1906

Passenger Pigeon Canada, Cuba, Mexico, United States 1914

Japanese Sea Lion Japan, Korea 1951

Hawaii Chaff Flower United States 1964

Southern Day Frog Australia 1979

Rotund Rocksnail United States 1996

Miss Waldron's Red Colobus Monkey Ghana and Ivory Coast 2000

Western Black Rhino Africa 2006

What Makes a Species Extinct?

A species can become extinct when the place where it lives, called "habitat", no longer gives it

what it needs to survive. A habitat must provide water, food, shelter, and safety. When these

things are missing, the species dies.

Many things can cause a habitat to change:

Forests destroyed by cutting down trees, or fire

Insects or disease can destroy the forest

Too many, or not enough predators eating a species

Land is filled which causes the water to dry up

Water is stopped from flowing because of a dam

Building of homes, offices, or other structures

Did you know that there are wild animals

in trouble in almost every place on earth?

When people change the land, they

change the lives of wild animals!

The ribbon has different Tabs. Each tab holds commands

that do a similar job.

Each tab is divided into Groups. A group is a collection of

commands that do similar actions like format text.

Each group has Commands. Commands are a button, box,

SESSION 1 EXTENSION ACTIVITY: ENDANGERED SPECIES LAWS

Many countries around the world have laws that help to protect endangered species. These

laws state that the government must:

develop and maintain conservation areas

provide money to projects that help to take species off the endangered list.

develop a plan to help species that are on the endangered list.

limit activity that will hurt a species on the endangered list.

work with other agencies and countries to help species on the endangered list.

stop people from killing, owning, or selling species on the endangered list.

stop people from harming the habitat where species on the endangered list live.

punish those who break any of these laws.

Does your country, state, or province have laws that protect endangered species? Use the

Internet to find the answer. Consider using the following search terms:

endangered species act + country

species at risk act + country

endangered species law + country

wildlife protection law + country

SESSION 2 Research the Facts In this session, you use the Internet to find facts about an endangered species.

This information will be copied from a website and pasted into a Microsoft Word

document.

It is important to remember that all information on the Internet is protected by

copyright laws. This means that you cannot take someone's work and pretend

that it is your own. That is stealing! To be able to use the information taken from

the Internet in your report, you must tell your readers where you got the facts.

Assignment 5: Choose a Species Topic

You are a reporter for the environmental newsletter "Friends of the Planet". You are going to write

a report on an endangered species. It will include the following information:

Appearance – what does the animal look like?

Habitat – Where does the animal live?

Population – how many are alive in the wild or in captivity?

Family – how many babies are born? When are the born? How does the mother take

care of them? Do the animals live together or alone?

Food – what kind of food does the animal eat? Where can this food be found?

Threats – what is hurting the animal, making it hard for it to live?

Help – what is being done to help remove this animal from the endangered species list?

Interesting Fact – what is a fact about the animal that readers would find interesting?

Sources – where did you find the information or pictures in the report?

TECHNOREPORT SESSION 3

TECHNOKIDS INC. 43

SESSION 3 EXTENSION ACTIVITY: THE FOOD CHAIN

All living things depend on each other to live. The food chain shows how some animals eat other

animals to survive. The first link in the chain is plant life, such as trees, shrubs, or grasses. The next

link is an animal that eats plants. The following link is an animal that eats other animals.

Animals eat different things. For this reason, each living thing can belong to many food groups.

When the food groups are joined together, they make a chain.

The balance of the food chain must be kept. If not, the ecosystem becomes unstable. For

example, if trees are cut down by humans, the giraffe will not have any leaves to eat for food.

This may result in starvation and death of the giraffe. This may also cause the giraffe to look

elsewhere for food. The giraffe would then cause the new ecosystem to become unbalanced,

as there would be too many animals eating the same foods. This would then cause more

animals to search for a new food supply.

Now think about the lion that eats the giraffe. They become hungry because their food source

has either died or moved to a new place. This situation could cause the lion to die because they

have no food. The lion could also eat more of another food. This would cause other animals to

become hungry because the lion is eating their share of the food.

One action can impact all the living things from many different ecosystems. Make a food chain

and then include the species you are studying. Tell how one change in the food chain creates a

chain reaction.

SESSION 4 Write the Report You cannot pretend that the facts you copied and pasted from the Internet are

your own. That would be plagiarism. Instead, you must rewrite the facts to put

them into your own words.

By adding, deleting, and changing words, you can turn each fact into a

sentence that makes sense. Sometimes you may come across words you do not

know. You can use the thesaurus or a dictionary to help you find another word.

When you are done, it is always a good idea to check spelling and grammar.

Although in this session, you will use spell check, it is important to realize that it

will not find all the mistakes. You still need to read over your work.

Discuss plagiarism.

Open Microsoft Word

Open Microsoft Word.

Click the Office Button and choose Open.

Go to the Report folder (ask your teacher how to do this).

Select the Pallid Bat document and click Open.

You do not want to plagiarize anyone. Plagiarism is when you take

someone else's work and pretend it is your own.

For this reason, you need to take the facts you found on the Internet and

put them into your own words. This is a difficult job.

There are four problems that you may have:

There is too much information: You will need to cut out words

to make each sentence sound better.

The text is not in sentences: in this case, you will need to add,

delete, or change the words to have them make sense.

The words used are not words you would normally use: in this

case, you can use the thesaurus to find another word that

you understand and that means the same thing.

Words may not be ones that you know: Sometimes you will

need to use a dictionary to find out the meaning of an

unknown word. Once you know what the word means you

can re-word the fact.

You will edit the report on the Pallid Bat. Editing this report is

good practice so that you can write your own.

Read the Facts about the Pallid Bat

The Pallid Bat report has already been

edited in places. You need to finish it. Edit

the parts in blue, brown, purple, and red.

First, read the report and look at the four

common problems.

These words are not ones

you would use in your

writing. Use the thesaurus

to find other words that

mean the same. These facts are not in

sentences. Words need to

be added to have this

information make sense.

These sentences are very

long. They have TOO

much information. Words

need to be added,

deleted, and changed to

help the sentences make

sense.

You do not know the

meaning of these words.

You need to use the

dictionary to look them

up. Once you know what

the words mean you can

rewrite the sentences.

length is 11 to 16 millimeters, ear length is 21 to 37 millimeters, forearm length is 45

to 60 millimeters, and skull length is 18.6 to 24 millimeters. Females tend to be

larger than males (mass 13.6 to 24.1 grams in males, 13.9 to 28.0 grams in

females).

Now read the sentences. What punctuation do you need to remove to have the

sentences make sense? Make the changes.

Problem: Facts are Not in Sentences

Add the words "The pallid bat lives in", beside the fact Deserts and canyons in the first

fact.

Add the words "In the Daytime it roosts" to make the second fact make sense.

Delete the words less often. In their place, add "Sometimes it lives" to make the third fact

make sense.

Add the words "At Nighttime the pallid bat roosts" to make the fourth fact make sense.

Now reread those sentences. What punctuation or capitals do you need to correct to

have the sentences make sense? Make the changes.

Many times the facts are not written in

complete sentences. You will need to add,

delete, and change some words!

You want the report to be interesting to read.

Sometimes there can be too much

information in a fact. Delete it!

SESSION 4 EXTENSION ACTIVITY: MAKE AN ANIMAL HABITAT

Animals live in specific habitats because they give them what they need to survive. The place

where an animal lives must provide food, shelter, water, and safety. Animals have adapted over

many years to suit their habitats. For example, a duck has webbed feet so it can swim in the

water, a beak so it can catch fish and feathers to stay dry in the water. A polar bear has fur to

stay warm in the cold Arctic, white fur to blend in with the snow, and sharp teeth and claws to

catch food to eat.

Pick a habitat from the list. Draw a newly discovered animal that could live in this habitat. You

must ensure that the appearance you give it suits the habitat. The animal must be able to catch

food, make shelter, drink water, and be safe from predators.

Habitat

Wetlands: bog, fens, marsh, swamp

Fresh water: rivers, streams, lakes

Salt water: ocean

Rain forest

Grasslands

Deserts
