A. Imaging sample: 1. Place sample on stage 2. Make sure sample does not interfere with C mirrors 3. Start “Sonic MyDVD” on both laser heating computers. Select “Create or Modify a DVD-Video Project”. Then click “Capture” button. Live video will appear on monitors. 4. Open “Motor Monitor.vi” on ES-2 computer (“Shortcut to BL Control Main:Windows:Motor Monitor.vi”) 5. Use “ES 2 Sample X”, “ES 2 Sample Y” and “ES 2 Sample Z” to position sample in field of view of monitors. Get sample in approximate focus on both cameras. 6. If necessary, use the “PICOMOTOR JOYSTICK” to focus objective lenses (motor C on both drivers 1 &2) 7. Adjust illumination with remote control (hutch lights may need to be turned off for best viewing). B. Turn on laser (see p. 3 for first 3 steps & p.4 thereafter): 1. Turn on both power switches for each power supply. 2. Turn on pump for cooling water supply (flow switch). 3. Wait until all lights are green and audible alarm silences. 4. Adjust illumination with remote control (hutch lights may need to be turned off for best viewing).

B. Turn on laser (see p. 3 for first 3 steps & p.4 thereafter):1. Turn on both power switches for each power supply.2. Turn on pump for cooling water supply (flow switch).3. Wait until all lights are green and audible alarm silences.4. Close and lock hutch door.5. For each remote, press “CTRL” button on laser remote control twice and press “ENTER” button once “REMOTE CONTROL” appears on the display.6. For each remote, press “LAMP” button on laser remote control twice and press “ENTER” button once “LAMP ON” appears on the display.7. For each remote, press “LAMP” button on laser remote control 3 times and press “ENTER” button once “CURRENT SETTING” appears on the display.8. For each remote, enter desired lamp current and press “ENTER” (lasing begins at a lamp current of 9.00 amps). 9. Press “SHTR” button on #1 laser remote control twice and press “ENTER” button once “SHUTTER OPEN” appears on the display.

C. Heating sample with laser:1. Push red “OPEN” button on REMOTE LASER SAFETY

INTERLOCK (you may find it more convenient to use the shutter control on the laser remote control.2. Use the “PICOMOTOR JOYSTICK” to adjust carbon mirrors to bring both laser spots to the same position (motors A & B on both drivers).Driver 1 is for upstream, driver 2 is for downstream.3. Use “ES 2 Sample X”, “ES 2 Sample Y” and “ES 2 Sample Z” to move sample under laser beam.4. If necessary, increase laser lamp current. You may have to set the power level to 20 Amps to get coupling for some samples.5. When laser glow saturates monitor adjust the neutral density filter wheel (Double click “SGcommander” icon on Spec1, “Next”, “Next”, “Start Test”, “Finish”, “Stage Control”, axes #1&2)

D. Turning system off:1. Push “Close” button on REMOTE LASER SAFETY INTERLOCK2. Press “SHTR” button on laser remote control twice and press “ENTER” button once “SHUTTER CLOSE” appears on the display.3. For each remote, turn lamp current to 00.00 amps and turn lamp off.4. Quit all software programs.4. Open hutch.5. Turn off cooling water flow and both power switches on each laser power supply.

Turning laser on:Do this for both power supplies!

1. Turn on main power for laser

2. Turn on secondary power

for laser

3. Turn on cooling water flow

Wait till all lights are green (may take a few minutes)

Using the remote control units (there is 1 for each power supply)1. push

the “CTRL” buttons twice so that remote control is activated

2. push the “LAMP” buttons until the display reads “Lamp On”, then press the “ENTER” button

3. push the “LAMP” buttons again until the display reads “Lamp Current”, press the “ENTER” button, then enter the current value desired. Start at a low value (10.00 amps), then ramp up

4. push the “SHTR” buttons until the display reads “Shutter Open”, then press the “ENTER” button. Use Control pad #1 as the master controller
