May 18, 2017To: Dennis Fries, Executive Director MCPSACFrom: Kim Henshaw, Josh Lacy, Sue Penepent, Bev ZieglerRe: Combining Thunder and Lightning Lacrosse Programs into one team

After careful consideration, the Greece Central School District respectfully request the merger of the Greece Thunder and the Greece Lightning in the sports of boys’ and girls’ lacrosse for the 2018 season. The result would be the district supporting one modified, one junior varsity, and one varsity team for each gender.Reasons for the merger are financial (4-million-dollar budget gap for 2017-18), participation based (low numbers, dropping/merging teams), inconsistent coaching staff, and lack of competitiveness. Attached are roster numbers, program records, coaching history, and benefits to the district as supporting evidence. Please let us know if any further information is needed.

Girls Lax record since 2008:23-139 (Athena/Ody)70-96 (Arc/Oly) *20 wins vs Thunder, 16 vs Gates, 11 vs EastridgeScored an average of 6.4 goals per game and gave up an average of 14.3 (Ath/Ody)Scored an average of 8 goals per game and gave up an average of 11.4 (Arc/Oly)Coaching staff turnover since 2008: Varsity-1, JV 3, Modified 3 (Ath/Ody)Coaching staff turnover since 2008: Varsity – 4, JV – 4, Modified – 3 (Arc/Oly)

Boys Lax record since 2008:53-100 (Ath/Ody)47-120 (Arc/Oly)Scored an average of 8.14 goals per game and gave up an average of 11.05 (Ath/Ody)Scored an average of 7.2 goals per game and gave up an average of 11.8 (Arc/Oly)

Coaching staff turnover since 2008: Varsity-3, JV 4, Modified 4 (Ath/Ody)Coaching staff turnover since 2008: Varsity - 5, JV - 5, Modified - 5 (Arc/Oly)

Benefits to the district:-Each team will have two paid coaches to work with student athletes and supervise activities of a highly specialized and potentially dangerous contact sport. Currently, each team only has one paid coach. -Reduces transportation congestion during the spring by eliminating at least 44 away trips.-Transportation cost savings + increasing bus availability for other teams-Savings of approximately $8,000 in sport official fees-Additional savings of approximately $1000 per season in equipment purchases-Ease indoor facility scheduling during the first two weeks of the season allowing teams district wide more gym time-Increase the competitiveness of games during the regular season and sectional play-Brings talented athletes from across the district together to compete as one team -Consistent roster numbers at all levels

Look at Sectional Point System

Modified issues and updates:

Looking for a preseason meeting for both mod A and B. Problems with the interpretation of the rules from school to school

All County/League selection procedure:

1. Starting with the team that has the best division record and working our way to the worst division record, each team declares how many 1st team All-County selections they think they deserve (Nominees).

2. We then compare the number everyone wants to the number available. We then begin to negotiate the number until we can work it out.

Proposed League Alignment: 1. Only changes to alignment are the Greece schools moving from Modified A to JV for both teams.

Possible ACTION items (Prioritized):

1. Looking at All-County Selections now that this will be the second year of using 3 divisions.

Any other issues we should be aware of: 1. Clarifying process for teams that “Stacking a line-up” may be an issue.

a. Add wording in italics to rule #9 in Monroe County Handbook:Stacking is prohibited and unethical. If a coach believes an illegal lineup was used by an opposing coach, it must be reported to the League Chairman and the Athletic Director of each of the schools involved. The coach of the team protested must have proof of a challenge match or matches showing date of challenge and scores. If there has been no challenge match, the protested court will be defaulted. Arranging challenge matches between each team’s close players shall be the priority in the early weeks of the season.

2. Double Headers. Only two (2) matches are allowed per day and both matches must use a modified scoring system that conforms to one of the following formats: best 2 of 3 sets, using no add scoring, with a 7-point tiebreak at 6-all; or, ten-game pro-set, using regular scoring with a 7-point tiebreak at 9 all.

3. Exhibition matches against another team count toward a player’s match total for team sectional play, but scrimmages do not.

Modified issues and updates: 1. Use of “Green Dot” tennis balls for a portion of the Modified A season.

a. This will be in place for 50% of the season.
