Kli: -I-.W W N, Oct. 0, 1868. Tlfct "pure patriot'VS. M. Hunt—who declares that if Grant elected for Presi- dent h« shall nover tako his seat, throws oft* a little more' bile through tho Democrat of lost week. Wo are glad that the physic which we administered to him the week pre- vioustohaving such excellent effect, and we have high hopes that one or two dose* more will restore hto shattered morals to a more healthy condition. lie reiterates his fatoe Btatcinonuj in refer- ence to the "disgraceful performance" of the nomocracy at Freetown in 1858—a perform- ance so very disgraceful that the Democrats rending iu our town have always boon ashamed to say anything about It themselves, ami blushed when it was mentioned by any one else. He then makes up a summary of our statements In regard to tho affair, and lamps thorn at? "as; wilfully <W»o,'' .The Doctortogetting old, and hto. memory, per- haps, toa little treacherous, So wo will not say any hard things—not oven call bhn a copperhead—but WO Will givo htm an oppor- tunity to refresh hto memory or to prove our statements, false. First, as to lite fact that Republicans assist- ed In raising the polo -whichtootto of tho assorlions denied by the Doctor. Now we do not ask him to go out of hto own village tofindtestimony on that point, hut to ask Dr, Barnes, of Marathon—a Republican who happened to be at Freetown on business on tho day in question—If he did not assist the Democrats in raising the pole, and also if the statements made by us tiro not true t The next' statement denied by tho Doctor to In regard to tho flag, and that ittonow in poseeBslon of W. J. Monutnye, of Cortland. Wo arc informed- that tho Doctor has made no inquiries in regard to this, and he merely makes a Imp-hazard assertion that-ittofalse. If the Doctor will go and examine the flag, and then report to the Republican commit- tee of this town that our statement was false, the committee will pay htm Ave dollars, be- sides hto necessary expenses. Ho then denies that a rope was stretched across tho street to stop' the Republican pro- cession, 'there to no need of saying any- thing In regard to tins, for theretoscarcely a Democrat in Freetown, that has any knowl- edge of that celebrated pole raising, that would have the effrontery to deny our state- ment In regard to it. finally, ho denies that the Democracy locked themselves into the church and lock- ed tho Republicans out during Mr. Tomp- kins' speech. Tho Ropubjlcau trustees of tlie church gavo thorn permission to hold their meeting thorn, as the Doctor states; and that fact of itselftoenough to throw discredit, to soy the least, on tho statement that the Republicans locked the door and attempted to keep tlio Democrats out O, no, wo well remember, Doctor, how during Unit meeting when your "friends" desired to go out—and we noticed that they had fre- quent calls—they crawled out of tho win- dows, because the doorkeepers would not open the doors for fear Republicans might come in. The Doctor further says that no Republi- can present on that occasion can deny his statements. Now, Doctor, tho Republican town committee of our town will pay you ton dollars for evory Republican you can bring that will say that your assertions are tiiio aud that ours are false, besides your ex- pense* in hunting them up. Our name, "Freetown,"tonot a fictitious uauio, and tho Doctor and his associates may discover thero is some reality iu it when they hear tlio result of tho voto iu this town next November. We have nevor been cursed by that breed- er of modern Democracy—a grog-shop—and drunkenness is unknown amongst us except when Democrats of othor towns hold meet- ings here. Of this our citizens, without re- gard to party, aro justly proud, and tho oc- casion referred to by the Doctor is ono for which wo are not to be blamod. Tho whis- ky used was brought from Solon and Mara- thon, and wc wefo glad to hc-tlec that the greater portion of tho Democrats of our own town thou kept sober and have since shown their disapprobation of tho conduot of their allies. The "fictitious name of Freetown" to here used by tlio Republican and the bet- tor portion of the Democrat party of this town, all Joining to refute the libelous char- ges of an outsider. Had we not been absent (as we were) from town on tho . day of tlio tire, the omission would not havo occulted. Visiting the ruins the noxt morning, we con- versed with a couple of gentlemen,- 0110 a tit cman and tho othor not—and their account of the Are, coupled with remarks similar to the above, created' the idea In our mind that tho material and long-continued assistance rendered by the citizens, prevented the spreading of the conflagration, and the ac- count was written with that idea uppermost Doing hastily prepared, as we were anxious to Issuo so that tho office could be moved, - and as such articles frequently are, the error was not discovered until too late. « » ••• Thefollowingsong, by W. Tlfct "pure patriot'VS. M. Hunt—who declares that if Grant i» elected for President h« shall nover tako his seat, throws oft* a little more' bile through tho Democrat of lost week. Wo are glad that the physic which we administered to him the week previous to having such excellent effect, and we have high hopes that one or two dose* more will restore hto shattered morals to a more healthy condition.

lie reiterates his fatoe Btatcinonuj in reference to the "disgraceful performance" of the nomocracy at Freetown in 1858—a performance so very disgraceful that the Democrats rending iu our town have always boon ashamed to say anything about It themselves, ami blushed when it was mentioned by any one else. He then makes up a summary of our statements In regard to tho affair, and lamps thorn at? "as; wilfully <W»o,'' .The Doctor to getting old, and hto. memory, perhaps, to a little treacherous, So wo will not say any hard things—not oven call bhn a copperhead—but WO Will givo htm an opportunity to refresh hto memory or to prove our statements, false.

First, as to lite fact that Republicans assisted In raising the polo -which to otto of tho assorlions denied by the Doctor. Now we do not ask him to go out of hto own village to find testimony on that point, hut to ask Dr, Barnes, of Marathon—a Republican who happened to be at Freetown on business on tho day in question—If he did not assist the Democrats in raising the pole, and also if the statements made by us tiro not true t

The next' statement denied by tho Doctor to In regard to tho flag, and that it to now in poseeBslon of W. J. Monutnye, of Cortland. Wo arc informed- that tho Doctor has made no inquiries in regard to this, and he merely makes a Imp-hazard assertion that-it to false. If the Doctor will go and examine the flag, and then report to the Republican committee of this town that our statement was false, the committee will pay htm Ave dollars, besides hto necessary expenses.

Ho then denies that a rope was stretched across tho street to stop' the Republican pro-cession, 'there to no need of saying anything In regard to tins, for there to scarcely a Democrat in Freetown, that has any knowledge of that celebrated pole raising, that would have the effrontery to deny our statement In regard to it.

finally, ho denies that the Democracy locked themselves into the church and locked tho Republicans out during Mr. Tompkins' speech. Tho Ropubjlcau trustees of tlie church gavo thorn permission to hold their meeting thorn, as the Doctor states; and that fact of itself to enough to throw discredit, to soy the least, on tho statement that the Republicans locked the door and attempted to keep tlio Democrats out O, no, wo well remember, Doctor, how during Unit meeting when your "friends" desired to go out—and we noticed that they had frequent calls—they crawled out of tho windows, because the doorkeepers would not open the doors for fear Republicans might come in.

The Doctor further says that no Republican present on that occasion can deny his statements. Now, Doctor, tho Republican town committee of our town will pay you ton dollars for evory Republican you can bring that will say that your assertions are tiiio aud that ours are false, besides your expense* in hunting them up.

Our name, "Freetown," to not a fictitious uauio, and tho Doctor and his associates may discover thero is some reality iu it when they hear tlio result of tho voto iu this town next November.

We have nevor been cursed by that breeder of modern Democracy—a grog-shop—and drunkenness is unknown amongst us except when Democrats of othor towns hold meetings here. Of this our citizens, without regard to party, aro justly proud, and tho occasion referred to by the Doctor is ono for which wo are not to be blamod. Tho whisky used was brought from Solon and Marathon, and wc wefo glad to hc-tlec that the greater portion of tho Democrats of our own town thou kept sober and have since shown their disapprobation of tho conduot of their allies. The "fictitious name of Freetown" to here used by tlio Republican and the bettor portion of the Democrat party of this town, all Joining to refute the libelous charges of an outsider. Why then should wo not appear by tho namo of Prcotown ?

FIBRV APOLOOT.—Wo owo an apology to tho fire department of Cortland for accidentally omitting to mention, in our report last week of the Aro at the foundry of CHAMUKU-I.AIN, SMITH & Co., the fact that the companies wore present and had charge of tho. means or arrangements for subduing the Are. We spoke only of the efforts put forth by tho "citizens." We regret tlio omission, not because of any harm done, but we moke it our endoavor to glvo credit to whom It may bo due, and do not wish to deprive any ono of Justly-deserved laurels, or even be thought guilty of an intentional error. Had we not been absent (as we were) from town on tho . day of tlio tire, the omission would not havo occulted. On returning homo in the: evening, wo immediately learned from various sources, of tho day's dolngfe—the burthen of overy story being "how hard tlio citizens worked;'' "I have never seen tiicm work'so faithfully and energetically at a Are," &e. Visiting the ruins the noxt morning, we conversed with a couple of gentlemen,- 0110 a tit cman and tho othor not—and their account of the Are, coupled with remarks similar to the above, created' the idea In our mind that tho material and long-continued assistance rendered by the citizens, prevented the spreading of the conflagration, and the account was written with that idea uppermost Doing hastily prepared, as we were anxious to Issuo so that tho office could be moved, -and as such articles frequently are, the error was not discovered until too late.

T h e Absurdity of Drinking, It has become a sort of popular—almost

national faith that It to not possible to bo happy unless yon drink. Among certain classes, and they are not the poor exclusively, drink is the beginning and end of •everything.

The very name liquor is held to bo synonymous with enjoyment, and the dearer liquor to, the more it to prized and coveted. Yet overy man who to not a down right drunkard, to well aware that the pleasures of drinking are beyotid a certain point, a mockery and delusion. I put it to any ono who has stood half tho night at the bar, or sat half of the night in a' club room, drinking, smoking and bandying.reckless talk, if the enjoyment of such an evening has been any thing like that of a few hours Spent at homo in the family circle ? The evil influence* of such pleasure on the health, to too obvious to be denied by one, and the illusory nature of the pleasures themselves would be unendurable also, If the persons who Indulge In them did not deceive themselves, and put the truth out of sight No ono ever brought any good out of drink yet It to, in short, a feverish spasm ot an idal enjoyment which leaves nothing behind but moroseness, regret, bad temper, self-reproach and headache. I should like to ask you sir, if you say your prayers .when you come homo in that state V No, you don't You arc ashamed to say them. You postpone them until you have purged yourself, your mind and your lips, by some sober and rational behavior. Next night when you pass the hours quietly at home yon feel that you have-not disgraced yourself and that you havo not injured your health.
