Important steps for KBDK in the understanding of digital preservation (1)

• Digital preservation of the Internet as the first digital preservation project.– See the Open Source SW NetarchiveSuite

• Partner in the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC)• Partner in the EU research digital preservation project PLANETS and later in the

OPF community– Se the PLANETS website and the OPF website

• Create and update the digital preservation policy and strategy at The Royal Library– See recent documents on this webpage

• Digital preservation is preservation of both metadata and ressources.• Metadata container for long term digital preservation -> METS

– See KB definition on id.kb.dk (In danish )

Important steps for KBDK in the understanding of digital preservation (2)

• Create a national Danish Bitmagasin Open Source SW in coorporation with the State Unuversity Library and the Danish National Archives– See the open source project on this webpage– Enable different preservation profile.

• Use WARC as packaging format for long term preservation. – See Package Formats for Preserved Digital Material (page 54) and ISO document

• Partner in the Hydra community

The unstructured data is preserved in the ARC format by the Archive repository. Minimal characterisation.

Digital Object Management System (DOMS) 2006

For structured data: KB Digital Object Management System component in the OAIS model

2006 design goals for DOMS

• Reuse of the archive module from NetarchiveSuite• Automated extraction of technical metadata and extract-

filters for metadata, such as support for IPTC, EXIF, XMP. • Long term preservation of metadata and ressource.• Automated QA validation of supported preservation

formats (gatekeeper functionality) before long term preservation in archive.

• Never delete digital objects in the long term preservation archive.

• Focus on the Gatekeeper functionality (Inhouse implementation)

• Focus on image, text and audio workflow

2010 design goals for DOMS

• Integrate the national Danish Bitrepository with the defined preservation profiles

• Use Open source products for the digital preservation process such as characterisation for tranparancy.

• Long term preservation of metadata and ressource.• Long term preserved metadata must be updated if needed.• Supported formats will be functional preserved• Other formats will be bit preserved.• One system for dissimination, administration and

preservation.
