A Hawk’s Life Issue # 4 2016-2017 From the Head of School It is hard to pick up any newspaper or magazine or listen to any news feed without reading something about how we can and should be living healthier lives. I thought I would get you up to speed on some recent developments with regard to our children’s healthy habits at St. Elizabeth’s. First, many of you know that we have partnered with a new caterer this year, Nanna’s Gourmet Market and Tea Emporium, and my favorite picture of Karen Renz, the owner, is of her holding a Sprouts shopping bag! The food she prepares for us is healthy indeed, and she also fundraises in the community so that she can offer this fine fare at more than reasonable prices for all our kids. You may have also heard that a terrifically generous anonymous donor has funded five new water fountains in our building. There are so many benefits to this upgrade. First, we are drinking healthier, filtered water. Second, since we can now use these fountains to fill water bottles, we are saving on literally thousands of cups and plastic bottles. The fountains even count how many we do save, which the kids love. (This kid does, too!) I really think they are drinking more water now! Finally, it saves us a great deal of money since we have been able to cancel our contract with Deep Rock Water. Finally, on the very near horizon, our older middle school students, who have been partnering with their peers from the Montessori School of Denver, are starting a “Farm to Table” program as part of their community service work. This new partnership gives us the opportunity to set up four hydroponic growing towers inside the school where we will be growing healthy greens, and our kids will be in charge of the maintenance and the science behind the successful production of good food. We will also revitalize and utilize more fully the outdoor raised gardens; there will be opportunities for volunteer help over the summer. The concept of all this is easy: we want to “plant” not only the idea of healthy food and eating habits in the minds of our kids and families, but we also want to be able to actually produce and consume our own healthy greens. Be on the lookout for some tasty treats! Featured Class: 2 nd Grade By Kamesvari Weathers This month's featured class is second grade. I chose this class because they made around 120 origami butterflies for a mobile that will be up for the auction. They all worked so hard on their project, and from the picture, it looks amazing. If you have ever made origami, then you know how challenging it can be at first. The second grade worked incredibly hard on their project, and it is one of the most creative ideas for the auction this year. Good job, second grade.

My Top 10 Bands

Christian Musso, 7h Grade

I will be going over the top 10 bands in my opinion. These artists that I will pick are varieties of folk, rock, classical, and blues. I will be doing the artists and my favorite songs from them. I hope you like these artists to. So let’s get started on the top artists.

Number 10 on the list is “Twenty One Pilots”. The reason I pick them is because I like how they sing really fast and their songs make people dance. Their songs have awesome instruments. My favorite song from them is “Ride.”

The 9th band on the list is “Leon Bridges.” I like the band because it has great lyrics. The band also has some slow dance songs. The songs are kind of classy and have a little blues. The 8th band on the list is “Jason Isbell.” The reason I picked this band is because it’s a southeastern or country band. I love how the band is mostly acoustical and the singing is good. I love how the band does covers of old songs. My favorite song from them is “If it Takes a Lifetime” because it sounds good and has good lyrics for those who like country songs. I like how it has an acoustic guitar and I like the drumbeat and the electric guitar. So I suggest this band and song for you to listen.

The 7th band to listen to is “Chris Stapleton” because he’s country. The reason I pick them is because the band has that classy feeling. I love the vocals and the songs overall. My favorite song from them is “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore.” This song is sad because it about a dad passing away. I love the lyrics, they're so good. I really think you should listen to that band.

The 6th band on the list is “Gary Clark Jr.” The reason I pick them is because “Gary Clark Jr” is so good at playing the electric guitar. He is mostly a guitarist, but he sings too. My favorite song from them is “When My Train Pulls In” because it has his great guitar talents and it makes you want to pretend to play the drums. That’s number 6 on the list.

The 5th band on the list is “Band of Horses”. The reason I pick them is because their songs almost sound the same vocally. I love the instruments to all the songs. I want to see them at a concert. My favorite song from them is “No One’s Gonna Love You” because of all the beats and rhythm. I like the sound of the whole song. That’s the 5th band on the list.

The 4th band on the list is “Langhorne Slim.” The reason I pick them is because of the ukulele in the background of some songs. He has a good voice and you'll be surprised of how young he is. My favorite song from them is “Someday I Will” because of the ukulele and the vocal solo. This was the 4th band on the list.

The 3rd band on the list is “Keith Urban.” The reason I pick them is because I’m a country fan and that’s the kind of country I like. I love the songs and singers. I would go see them if I could. My favorite song from them is “That Could Still Be Us” because it sounds kind of sad. I love the piano and orchestra in the background. That is the 3rd band on the list.

The 2nd band on the list is “Gungor.” I pick them because they are SO genius in their songs. The singers are amazing and the instruments are so cool. I listen to them in the car and think about the lyrics. My favorite song from them is “Let There Be.” I love it because it is so breathtaking. It is a liturgy of the creation story. You will know why it’s so brilliant when you listen to it. That is the 2nd band on the list.

The last and final band on the list is “Mumford and Sons.” They are insanely great. I went and saw them at Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre. Mumford was so funny and they're just a cool group. My favorite song from them is “Lover Of The Light” because it sounds great and it is so groovy. I love all of their songs, so it was hard for me to choose. Go see them if you haven’t already or see them a second time like I want to do.

This was my favorite band list and favorite songs from them. I did the best I could to give all the details. Those bands are all good and have their own talents. I really hope you like them too if you heard of them. So I hope you enjoyed my Top 10 Song Bands.

A History of Chocolate By Allisandra Baron

Chocolate is known as a sweet tasty treat but it has a little more to it. Before cocoa beans there was cacao beans. Cacao trees only grew near the equator so in South America. The natives there at that time really valued it. Instead of having a sugary solid it was a spicy liquid. They valued it so much that they only served it to royals. The natives there were the only ones who knew about it and no one else served it. When the European explorers were exploring they happen to stumble across the natives that lived in South America. Then, they went to war and the war did not last that long. Finally, the European explorers conquered the natives and the rest fled the town. They left behind quite a few things when they left including their cacao beans and trees. The European explorers were looking for money in the vacant village but they found the cacao beans inside the temple. They knew what they were so they took them back to Europe with all the other stuff they took with them. When they got back to Europe they also decided to make the cacao beans into a spicy drink and they liked it.

.

The drink became really popular and it spread all across Europe. In fact it became so popular that it was only served to the royal and rich people. It was not that long until somebody decided to add sugar to make it sweet. Then, that spread around the world and it became very popular. Still they had to get cacao beans shipped from South America because they tried to grow cacao trees but they died.

Then, a little bit later Mr. Cadbury came around and made the popular drink into a solid. Next, he decided to put it into a shape like a heart or a square. Then a lot of chocolate brands we know today like Hershey and KitKat started developing. Chocolate has a interesting history.

March Movies By: Millie Hewitt-Link

It’s always hard to choose which movies, but I managed to choose two. For PG, I chose The Secret Life Of Pets. It was super funny and also the animals were cute. The only thing about this movie is that it is actually pretty violent considering for one, it’s a PG rated movie, and for two, it’s about cute fuzzy animals. The soundtrack was cute but the plot was kind of all over the place. For the PG-13 movie, I chose La La Land, which is actually one of my favorite movies. It won five Oscars, and was nominated for 12 in all. The soundtrack is honestly amazing. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are the lead actors, and they were amazing! Go check out these movies!

Top Ten Playoff Games in NFL History

by Liam Grove, 8th Grade

There have been many amazing games in NFL history, but during football season, there’s no time like the playoffs. Today I will count down the top 10 most amazing playoff games of all time, in my opinion. I should mention before I begin however, that Super Bowl 44 was worth mentioning. This housed the New Orleans Saints, and the Indianapolis Colts. This game was not just a battle between teams, but a battle against nature. The Saints overcame Hurricane Katrina to defeat the unstoppable Peyton Manning in football’s biggest stage. You also may notice that the Patriots are not particularly highlighted, this is because I thought it would be nice to have a top 10 list without their name written all over it. On that note, coming in at number 10 is the only time I will mention Brady’s name in this list, the 2006 AFC Championship. 10: 2006 AFC Championship Game, Colts VS Patriots Peyton Manning and Tom Brady played 17 times over their legendary careers, but up until the 2006 AFC Championship, Brady seemed almost invincible, holding a 6-2 record against Manning going into the game. Brady proved dominant through the first half, leading his Patriots to 21-6 halftime edge. In the second half Brady didn’t let up, but Peyton outplayed him. After the Colts tied the game at 21, the Patriots answered, and the teams went back and forth, resulting in Boston leading by a score of 31-34 late. Manning lead his Colts on a game winning drive to beat the Patriots 38-34. 9: This next game might be higher on your personal list, but remember I am a Broncos fan, so be glad this is even on here. The high powered Broncos offence with offseason addition Peyton Manning were seeking their first Super Bowl appearance since the Elway era, but the upset Ravens said otherwise. The Broncos beat the Ravens almost a month earlier in Baltimore 34-17 on route to a first round by, but the loss was bitter for the Ravens. They knew this was their chance for vengeance, but it wouldn’t come easy. This game was fun to watch from the get go: all five and a half quarters of play. It was close in every aspect the teams were tied after every quarter, including the first overtime session. The score was 35-28 with the Broncos on top late in the fourth, and the Ravens needed a miracle. Ravens Quarterback Joe Flacco connected with receiver Jacoby Jones for a 70 yard game tying touchdown to send it to overtime. The first Overtime was scoreless, but the Ravens managed a game winning 47 yard kick to win it in double OT. 8: Matt Hasselbeck was quarterback for Green Bay, after being drafted in the sixth round by them in the 1998 season. He was traded to the Seahawks in 2001, and played there until 2011, when he went to Tennessee. Back in 2004 however, while he still played for the Seahawks, he met his former team, the Green Bay Packers, in the wild card round of the playoffs. This was a good game, but not historic, until overtime. The Seahawks won the coin toss, and the ref asked Matt if his team

Issue # 4 2016-2017

4: The San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys faced off in Candlestick park San Francisco for the 1982 NFC Conference Championship. Joe Montana lead the 49ers on an 83 yard drive, capped of with a touchdown pass to San Francisco receiver Clark, this play is forever known as “the Catch”. This catch was so legendary because it looked like an impossible catch, but Clark somehow pulled it in to spark the ‘Niners dynasty. 3: On January 2nd 1982, the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers played in a battle of the ages. In the fourth quarter, both teams scored a touchdown, sending it into overtime. The Chargers drove down to the 10 on the first drive of overtime, but missed a field goal wide left. The Dolphins attempted a 35 yard field goal to win, and cap off one of the best comebacks in NFL history, but their kick was blocked. The Chargers then drove down the field and won the game with a 29 yard field goal, thus creating “the miracle that died”.

2: The Denver Broncos, and Cleveland Browns played each other on January 11 1987 in the AFC Championship game. The Browns took lead of seven late in the fourth quarter, and gave the Broncos the ball on their own two. John Elway lead his Broncos on a 98 yard drive over 15 plays to tie the game. In overtime, Denver took the ball down field and won, but this game wasn’t remembered for a field goal, it was remembered for “the drive”.

1: The number one playoff game in NFL history (in my opinion) happened on January 3rd 1993. The Buffalo Bills and Houston Oilers met in the wild card round of the playoffs, but this was no ordinary wild card game. The game seemed pointless to watch, going into half, at 35-3 early in the third. The Bills scored 28 points in the third quarter, cutting the lead to four points. The Oilers put up a field goal in the fourth, but the Bills topped that with a touchdown, tying the game to send it to overtime. In Overtime, Houston Quarterback threw an interception to Buffalo defensive back Nate Odems, putting them in position to win the game. The Bills kicked a 32 yard field goal to win the game, and cap off the best comeback in playoff, and all of NFL history.

wanted the ball, and he said “We want the ball, and we’re going to score.” Matt proceeded to prove himself wrong, throwing a Pick Six on their first, and only, drive in overtime, that lost them the game.

7: The Raiders and Steelers met in the divisional round of the 1972 playoffs, and for most of the game, it was a defensive battle. After a scoreless first half, the Steelers took a 3-0 third quarter lead. They scored another field goal in the fourth, but it was answered by the first touchdown of the game. Late in the fourth quarter Terry Bradshaw and his Steelers were losing 6-7. They needed something to happen desperately. With less than 30 seconds left, Bradshaw threw a prayer. The pass was attempted to John Fuqua, but was batted down by Raiders defensive back Jack Tatum. Before it hit the ground, Steelers fullback Franco Harris scooped it up. Franco returned it for a game winning touchdown, the game forever being spoken of as, the immaculate.

6: In the 2013 wild card round, the Indianapolis Colts were trailing to the Kansas City Chiefs 10-38 early in the third quarter. The Colts had a 3.6 percent chance to win according to ESPN, but they didn’t give up. Young star Andrew Luck lead his colts to 21 third quarter points, and were only losing by 10 going into the fourth. Indianapolis scored 14 points in the fourth, and holding the Chiefs to only 3, thus completing the second highest playoff comeback in NFL history. They rallied a 28-point comeback to win 45-44. 5: On February 1st 2009 the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers faced off in Super Bowl 43. One of the league's greatest quarterbacks, Kurt Warner of the Cardinals, faced off against one of it’s rising stars, Big Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers. Going into halftime the score was 17-7 in Pittsburgh's favor, and they managed to add a field goal going into the fourth. The Cardinals rallied 16 points in the fourth quarter capped off by a 64 yard Larry Fitzgerald catch with 2:37 left. The game wasn’t over though, Losing 20-23 the Steelers had one chance to win. They pulled of a 78 yard drive ending with a toe tap catch by Santonio Holmes to win the game, with a final score of 27-23.

Samurai By: Adrian Mclair, 7th grade

Samurai were members of a powerful military in feudal Japan. At first they were provincial warriors rising to power during the 12 century with the beginning of Japan’s first

dictatorship that was called the Shogunate. They were the servants of the Daimyos or great lords. They backed up the Shogun’s authority and gave him power over the Mikado or Emperor. They dominated until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Even after that they entered the elite ranks of politics and industry. The traditional Samurai code, Bushido stands for honor, discipline, and morality they also called this the way of the warrior. A couple of their weapons are naginatas, katanas, kamas, and the last one to be listed on this article is the bokken.

Breaking the Constitution?

By Mary Sullivan

Donald Trump recently made a ban against refugees coming from these Muslim countries: Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, and Sudan. The most well known constitution rule is freedom of religion, by making this ban he is breaking the constitution. Trump has multiple times before spoken hate against Muslims. Trump thinks he is protecting us from terrorists, or so he says. None of the terrorists from the 9/11 attack came from these seven countries. People are trying to understand why he chose these countries if no terrorists came from these countries. It seems his only motive is against Muslims. This ban breaks multiple parts of the constitution. For example the most known, freedom of religion. If this ban lasted the constitution would only be another piece of paper. Luckily, many lawyers and protesters went to action and got the ban repealed.

This edition of the newspaper was partially compiled by 8th grader Mary Sullivan.

Thanks for all your hard work, Mary and great work!
