What happens at night in our Ghost Winery? Is that when the spirits come out? One of our cellar workers won’t go up to the second floor after dark…he was spooked once and that was enough for him. The label on our 2017 All Hallows’ Eve Cabernet Franc reflects my imaginings on this topic. I collaborated with comic book artist Steve Ellis, who created an eerie depiction of our Ghost Winery at full moon during harvest. You’ll see the telltale signs of Flora Springs: our entry bridge, the stone winery, the vine-yard sign. But what about that rat? Is he protecting the grapes, or is he possessed

by them? Will there be any fruit left in the morning when the winemakers return?

I love the mystery surround-ing our Ghost Winery at Hal-loween, and creating these one-of-a-kind labels each year is one of my favorite projects. This year, whether you’re slipping into a spooky costume or trolling the neighborhood for treats, my hope is that you’ll celebrate your own Halloween tradi-tions by opening a bottle (or two) of our All Hallows’ Eve Cabernet Franc.

2017 GHOST WINERY MALBEC

Flora Springs has the distinction of being home to one of Napa Valley’s original “ghost wineries” – wineries built between 1860 and 1900 but abandoned in the early 20th century due to the vine disease phylloxera, the Great Depression, and of course Prohibition. Today, some ghost wineries still exist in ruins; only a few, such as Flora Springs, have been renovated and restored to their former glory. Each year we bottle a small amount of estate-grown Malbec in honor of this long and illustrious history. Featuring a hand-drawn etching of our historic stone cellar, the Ghost Winery Malbec evokes early Flora Springs labels in the look and typeface.

Sourced from a small block within the Komes Ranch in Rutherford, this limited-production 2017 Malbec was aged in our Ghost Winery cellar for 21 months prior to bottling. The wine offers bewitchingly dark flavors of plum, blackberry and black cherry with notes of fresh-roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate and a haunting hint of licorice. This is a bold and beautifully structured Napa Malbec with well-developed flavors, excellent acidity and velvety tannins that linger on the finish. It would do well with lean cuts of meat such as filet mignon or skirt steak, thin crust mushroom-topped pizza or a warm black bean soup.

2017 ALL HALLOWS’ EVE CABERNET FRANC

Once again Nat Komes has created a completely unique label for our All Hallows’ Eve Cabernet Franc, collaborating this year with artist, comic book illustrator and graphic novelist Steve Ellis, who is considered a digital comics pioneer. Nat wished to evoke the mystery of the moonlit Ghost Winery on Hallows’ Eve (the day before All Saints Day, aka Halloween), with grapes in bins waiting for crush, curiously-lit windows on the 2nd floor, the iconic bridge to the winery’s entrance, and to top it off, a menacing rat possessed by the grapes in its grasp. Ellis masterfully combined these elements to create one of the eeriest All Hallows’ Eve labels yet, one that will make you think twice about hanging around a ghost winery on this night of all nights.

The Cabernet Franc wine comes from a small block near John Komes’ home on the Rutherford side of the Komes Ranch. This is a smooth, rich, mouth-coating red, with ripe fruit flavors of blackberry and black cherry liqueur and luscious, warm notes of cardamom, kola nut and toasted marshmallow. This wine is sure to light up a dark and stormy night, and would be an ideal accompaniment to cheesy baked pasta, Portobello mushroom burgers or a classic cassoulet.
