date Jul 19, 2007 6:21 PM subject RE: offer for OptoRx modules from ECIL, Hyd, India signed-by cern.ch mailed-by cern.ch

Dear Sir Many thanks for your offer for the production of "optoRx" modules dated June 29th. I apologise for the delay in replying to you. I believe that we can proceed with an eventual order, but before doing so we need to make some practical arrangements. Firstly I need to have a single technical contact person in India. This person should be directly responsible for overseeing the complete production and quality control etc. as well as liasing between BARC, ECIL and CERN. Please could you agree, with Prof Gurtu and the representatives from BARC, on a suitable person as soon as possible and inform me?

Page 11: A. Gurtu Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai

A. Gurtu: "Report to the Collaboration", India-CMS Collaboration Meeting, PU, 5-6 April 2007

Secondly, before the full order is placed, we would like you to produce a small pre-series, perhaps of 2-3 complete pieces. If you agree to do this, please let me know when you could produce them so that we can arrange to send you the optical receivers. At that point I will also send the final production (Gerber) files to you. For the components (FPGA, all passive components etc.) please let me know how you would proceed for this pre-series of 2-3 pieces. i.e. would you procure all items yourself or do you wish to purchase them from CERN? I look forward to your response to the above issues, with kind regards, Dr. David BarneyCMS Preshower Coordinator

Progress in CMS since the last CMS Week

Very significant progress.

Main highlights are:

i) the first phase of the heavy lowering of the elements of the experiment into the underground cavern, including that of the heaviest element, the YB0, has been successfully completed.

ii) Commissioning of detectors installed in UX has started: HF+ has been commissioned, 4 DT sectors on YB0 ‘cosmics’ commissioned. First CMS Global run (Lvl-1 Trigger, HF, DAQ, data transfer to T1/T2) conducted end May.

iii) Commissioning of muon detectors still on the surface is proceeding well. ‘Cosmics” commissioning on DTs on YB-1 completed

iv) The critical path: installation of services on the YB0 is proceeding. Currently shows a delay of 1 mo. Investigating ways to mitigate.

v) Beam-pipe installation of -end (one of 3 parts) done, +end significant amount of work already carried out in January. Much has been learnt.

Page 25: A. Gurtu Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai

A. Gurtu: "Report to the Collaboration", India-CMS Collaboration Meeting, PU, 5-6 April 2007

Progress in CMS since the last CMS Week

vi) Several million cosmic tracks have been recorded in the silicon strip tracker sitting inside the Tracker Support Tube since Mar 07.

Testing programme: several weeks at room temperature (DONE), 3 weeks at 0 °C (DONE), and now at -10 °C. The quality of the Tracker remains excellent. End surface commissioning mid-July.

vii) First half barrel ECAL installed at Point 5. Excellent quality (19 problem channels out of 30600). The last (of 36) barrel supermodule will be ready for installation early July. Barrel ECAL installation will be completed in July.

Endcap crystals production is proceeding well: over 3500 crystals now delivered(out of 14750 needed). The contract for the remaining 5500 endcap crystals is almost ready for signature - last EE crystal will be delivered end-Mar’08.

viii) DAQ and Trigger installation proceeding well.

Crystals Production: last crystals to be delivered end-Mar08

Assembly Progress 20 supercrystals mounted on Dee4 Bat 186 test beam29 s.c. assembled for Dee1 ( ~140/Dee), 1400 VPTs glued to crystalsCritical path components: HV boards, cooling bars, etc,Start mounting s.c. on Dee1 2nd week of July

Schedule is very tightIst Dee ready only at the end of 2007(Retrofit of motherborads in SMs has had an effect on progress in EE project.)

IssuesAdequate manpower (to speed up assembly and for management) Work on the back of the Dee is complicated (LV cabling & looming)ConcernsLimited experience so far. Much work still ahead. Will not know the exact time needed to get the last Dee until the first one has been completed and tested.

ECAL Preshower (ES) From AR: Schedule: Effort is needed for the preshower endcaps to be ready for installation in January and March 2008.

Concerns

No contingency

Many unknowns in the larger-scale assembly stages (ladders mounting on Dees etc.)

Some manpower concerns, particularly technicians, but:Significant help from CMA group recently

Additional resources found in CERN_DT groups for engineering/mechanics

Promises of manpower from collaborators for assembly and testing

CAEN LV supplies: sufficient modules to run one full endcap will not be available until ~ March 2008

Additional manpower will be needed.

NOTE: EE has higher priority than ES

Overall Plan & PhysicsGlobal priorities:

- Detector completion and commissioning

- Detector Performance

- Physics Objects

- Physics AnalysisPhysics-wise: focus on discovery

Standard Model studies: a necessary step

- Obviously, lots of good physics there as well

- But priority is in preparing for the main physics (new) that the LHC is conceived for

And, to do physics we also need to:- Complete and commission trigger

- Complete software

- Deploy computing model – and use it effectively

Page 39: A. Gurtu Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai

CMS Physics: Basic Program of Work• Up to Nov 2007• Concentrate on the physics that we can do with up to 1fb-1.

– Work in being done in order to chart out the “how” we will do this work, and to prepare methods, tools and people.

• Two major milestones, namely– HLT milestone (due now) - Goal CPU within a factor 2 of 40ms/evt. May 120 ms now < 50 ms/event, very large effort (see Thurs Plenary).– Completion of 1fb-1 exercise (Nov) - Approach the “1fb-1 goal” in a set of successive approximations (10, 100 and 1000 pb-1).

• From Dec 07 to May 08

• Prepare for the actual data. Goals:– Have all the datasets and streams defined– Have all of the HLT code in place– Have all the trigger monitoring system (code + people) in place– Have all the Monte Carlo events in place– Have all the data-analysis organization (code + people) in place– Have analyses (geared for 10 pb-1 & 100 pb-1) ready to absorb the data

CMS Schedule v36 has been prepared using the guidance from the DG.

Beam-pipe Closed and Baked-out by End March 2008.In v36 this point will be reached in mid-Feb 08.

Major Features of v36. • By end-September 07: Tracker insertion started• In December 07 ; recording cosmics with Tracker/EB/HB etc. (Expt

open) • By end-March 08, CMS is closed (including pixels and one ECAL

endcap) and taking cosmics with Field-ON

The main uses/consequences of the new guidance:- commission the entire detector/data flow and analysis systems with

cosmics data- reduce risks (e.g. by separating tracker cabling from beam-pipe

installation that was previously in parallel.

- Time to carry out untried operations (HF riser system in UX, pixel comm. sys..

- Open +end to allow commissioning to proceed- Repair/replace defective parts (RPC HV cables, DT fibres,…- Accommodate delay in YB0 services
