Want your bus ticket cheaper? As you go through this guide you’ll notice that many of our tickets can now be bought on a mobile phone using our mTickets app or via a Touch card. In fact, in many cases tickets are cheaper if you buy them like this rather than from the driver on the bus.

mTickets are proving particularly popular and already over 20% of ticket purchases in Bristol are now carried out via the app.

It’s so easy to buy one on your debit or credit card anytime (while sat on your sofa if you like!) and just show the driver your phone with no need to carry a paper ticket. In a recent survey 96% of mTicket users said they were likely to recommend mTickets to a friend.

As well as being great for our customers the switch to mTickets is helping to decrease boarding times significantly which in turn helps our buses stay on time. The average time taken by a customer to board paying cash is 14 seconds whereas with a mTicket it is 2.25 seconds which shows what a difference it can make.

Our aim is to move towards cashless buses as is the case in some other major cities, however we know we need to provide people with other options before we can do this. mTickets and Touch are two options but we are also always looking at new technology. On our park and ride buses in Bristol we are currently trialling new ticket machines which accept contactless bank card payments and we expect to roll this feature out onto our whole fleet during the course of 2017.

So if you want to benefit from lower fares and help us keep buses running on time why not think about a new way of buying your ticket. To get a mTicket search your app store for ‘First bus mTickets’ or for a Touch card visit touch-card.co.uk. Alternatively head to our website or into one of our travel shops for more information.

Children under 5 travel free

Unlimited children under five can travel for free with each fare-paying adult/student/16-21 year old or concessionary pass holder.

Up to 50% discount for children over 5

Children aged 5-15 can get up to 50% discount on all tickets across the West of England.

We would advise all older children to get a (free) First Photo ID pass as proof of age. If the driver can’t be sure how old they are, and they are not able to produce one of these, they may be required to pay a full adult fare, so it’s in their interests to have one.

An application form can be found on page 33.

NEW! Buy your child's ticket on your phone

Child tickets can also now be bought on one mobile phone and transferred to another with mTickets.

For example if a parent and child both have mobile phones with the mTicket app on, the parent can buy a child ticket on their phone using their credit/debit card and then send it to the child's phone for them to use.

Up to 30% discount for 16-21 year olds and students

Young people (16-21) and students (of any age if in full time education) can get up to 30% discount on all tickets if they have a First Photo ID pass or their student photo ID.

An application form for a free First Photo ID pass can be found on page 33.

Your ticket types

Single tickets

The cost of your single ticket is based on the route distance you travel within your chosen area.

Your fare is determined by how many sections of route you travel through, as defined by the chart on page 28. This excludes flat fare zones.

Flat fares

A flat fare structure is in place in Bath Inner Zone and Weston-super-Mare Inner Zone.

This means that wherever you travel in that zone, the price of a single journey will be the same.

Day and season tickets

If you're making more than one journey on a particular day, or are a regular traveller these tickets can offer you great savings.

Just decide which area you want to travel in and how long you need your ticket to last. Then once you have your ticket you can use it as much as you like in your chosen period of time, making as many journeys as you need to. Our day tickets are valid until 4.29am the following morning so are perfect for a day and night out!

Group Ticket

With this unlimited day ticket up to five adults can travel together.

Tickets can be bought after 9.30am Monday to Friday and all day Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. And as with all our day tickets, it is valid until 4.29am in the morning.

How is your single fare calculated?

Distance-based fares for the West of England

In the West of England (excluding Bath Inner and Weston-super-Mare Inner Zones – see pages 6 & 16) your single fare is worked out based on the route distance you are travelling.

Distances are calculated using fare stage sections rather than individual bus stops, with each section being approximately one mile long*.

If you travel in 1-3 mile long sections it’ll be £1.50, 4-6 mile long sections will be £2.50 and so on.

Here is an example of one route and some of the fares along it:

Emersons Green, Sainsbury’s to Long Close would be £1.50 as you are travelling in three sections (numbers 1, 2 and 3, Long Close is classed as section 3 in this example as it’s where you are getting off the bus).

Long Close to Narroways Road would be £2.50 as you are travelling in four sections (4, 5, 6, 7, Long Close is counted as section 4 in this example as it’s your boarding point).

Blackberry Hospital to Downend, The Leap would be £2.50 as you are travelling in four sections (5, 4, 3, 2).

Please note: Fares shown are mTicket/Touch card and would be more if bought from the driver.

*Sections are approximately one mile long as not all bus stops are exactly to the mile. Where a significant feature is on a route such as a row of shops we have tried to extend sections to include this within the mile section.

Flat fare zones for Bath and Weston-super-Mare

In Bath Inner Zone and Weston-super-Mare Inner Zone there is a flat fare for all single journeys.

This means any single journey which starts and ends entirely within either of these zones will be priced at £2.50 (£2 on mTicket) in the Bath Inner Zone and £1.50 in the Weston-super-Mare Inner Zone.

Journeys out of a flat fare zone

If a journey begins within a flat fare zone but travels beyond the border of that zone, the fare will be calculated as follows:

Flat fare to the border of the zone, then rounded up to £2.70, £4, £5 or £6 depending on the distance travelled thereafter.
