the ravenswood Corridor and surrounding area is home to some of Chicago’s best and most unique craft beer options. once a turn-of-the-century hub for industry, this stretch of road is now a mosaic of creative businesses and artisans intertwined into a uniquely resi-dential backdrop.

with a bevy of breweries (and a renowned distillery) planting their roots in the ravenswood Corridor, it truly has become Chicago’s Malt row. Count some of the accolades of these neighbors – ’no. 5 best new brewery’ by usa today [dovetail], ’first Michelin-starred brewpub’ [band of bohemia], ’best new brewery 2013’ by Chicago Magazine [begyle brewing Co.], ‘us Micro whisky of the Year run-ner-up 2017’ by Jim Murray’s whisky bible [KovaL distillery] – it’s easy to see why spending a day wandering the corridor would be time well spent.

whether it’s dovetail for a crisp pint of lager, half acre for a juicy hop-centric iPa, or band of bohmeia for a beet-thyme ale, we’ll see you around the taprooms. Cheers!

the first taproom to open along the historic ra-venswood industrial Corridor, begyle has quickly become a neighborhood institution. whether it’s a weeknight skeeball league, sunday yoga session, brewery tour or a visit from local food trucks, there’s always something happening at this laidback brewery.

Launched in 2012 by a group of longtime friends from Michigan, begyle offers Chicago’s only Community supported brewing (Csb) program. similar to Community supported agriculture, members receive a growler or two a month as a part of their membership, allowing the brewery to build an extremely close relationship with their neighbors.

we brew like monks, minus the vows. dovetail founders hagen and bill met in germany while earning their Master brewer certifications from the siebel institute. bonding over their mutual interest in continental european beer styles, the two formed a friendship that has resulted an exciting young brewery dedicated to old world brewing methods.

even seasoned beer geeks will enjoy their saturday tours, where visitors can get acquainted with equip-ment like open-top fermenters and Chicago’s first coolship, another fermentation vessel that allows for the introduction of wild yeast and bacteria. be sure to ask about dovetail’s lauter grant, a 100 year old piece of antique brewing equipment that bill and hagen acquired from a farm outside of Munich.

Pairing food and beer is trendy. Crafting unique beers that pair with specific dishes created by a team that honed their skills at restaurants like alinea, next, and akelarre- that’s how you be-come the world’s first Michelin rated brewpub.

Located across from the ravenswood Metra sta-tion, band of bohemia is a chic “culinary brew-house” that offers a range of cuisine including bar snacks, a tasting menu, full coffee service, wine, cocktails and lounge seating. their eclectic draft list rotates to complement a seasonally influ-enced menu. the only mainstay is band’s house beer, the noble raven ale, a delightfully crisp belgian/german golden ale showcasing haller-tauer hops.

KovaL is one of america’s largest craft distilleries and winner of over 50 international awards. KovaL pioneered a new school of distilling in the united states that focuses on using only the heart cut of the distillate. the heart cut is the purest, most grain forward portion of the distillate, affording KovaL its signature clean, bright style. KovaL is also known for its use of unique and interesting grains, inspiring wine enthusiast to name the distillery a “leader of the alt-grain scene.” all of KovaL’s whiskies are single barrel and aged in 30-gallon barrels of new american oak, and in turn, each bottle can be traced back to the field on which the grain was grown. all of KovaL’s whiskey, gin, vodka, and liqueurs are certified organic and Kosher and made from grain to bottle in Chicago.

Located at 5121 n ravenswood ave., the KovaL facility includes a retail shop and space for cocktails classes, tours, and whiskey workshops.

empirical brewery is the largest start-up brewhouse in Chicago’s history and home for everything nerdy. the taproom is dog friendly and the perfect place to meet up with a group of friends to play board games, watch sci-fi movies, read comic books and enjoy a comedy show or beer festival in the brewery. there is always someone to chat with over delicious beers made on their 1bbl and 30bbl systems. stop by on saturdays at 2pm and take a tour for a chance to see their famous feral cats.

empirical has a wide variety of beer styles to choose from, anywhere between wild ales, Lagers, Kettle sours, b.a. imperial stouts, and everything hoppy. in 2018, Pro-ton india Pale ale and symbiotic Kettle sour both took gold at the illinois beer festival and neutronium imperial rye stout took bronze at fobab for aging in islay scotch barrels. no matter your palate empirical has the beer for you.

what started with a spiteful incident as kids playing hockey on the pond turned into a lifelong friendship for brad shaffer and Jason Klein. with a passion for beer and a desire to start their own business, spiteful launched in 2012 with g.f.Y. stout, setting the tone for the aggressive flavors and attitudes of spiteful’s beers.

after years of brewing in a 400 sq. ft basement in the ravenswood industrial Corridor, spiteful moved operations to bowmanville in 2017. this larger production facility makes spiteful beer more widely available than ever in illinois. our tap room sports a rotating selection of 16 beers that are all made on-site. we brew clean, drinkable beer in styles ranging from american iPas, Porters, and stouts to european-inspired lagers and wheat beers.

half acre beer Company launched in 2007 and is known for putting out classic and ambitious, artfully packaged beer, brewed for the collective odyssey.

half acre operates two brewery locations, located 2 miles apart.

the original, on Lincoln avenue, includes a shop where visitors can sample beer or buy to go, before settling into the taproom for a full pour and an unconventional burrito from their kitchen. it is also home to their wyld program, responsible for mixed culture, fruited, and wood aged beers.

the second facility, in bowmanville, began producing beer in 2015 and opened a full service restaurant and beer garden in late 2017. the menu on balmoral focuses on the excellent execution of home favorites, paired with house baked bread. balmoral also offers all day brunch on sundays.

smylie brothers is an evanston brewpub and smokehouse born out of years of Mike smylie’s dedication to bbq and brewing. Mike and his four brothers offer guests texas-inspired bbq paired with 16 in-house drafts and a full bar. this 10-barrel brewpub is located 1 block west of davis stops for the Metra and ‘L’, conveniently close to the thriv-ing downtown area.

smylie brothers has recently expanded its oper-ations to a bowmanville production warehouse which includes a 15-barrel brewery at the north end of Malt row. smylie brothers uses this facility to support draft sales at the brewpub and to local craft retailers. in the future, smylie brothers looks to expand the bowmanville facility to include a canning operation, along with a taproom.
