Why Pay Double for Garbage? Are you looking for ways to save money? Well, try looking in your garbage can. You’ll find that most everything in your trash started out as something you purchased at the store. Individually packaged items and disposable convenience products can cost 2 or 3 times more, and then end up adding to the garbage bill. Save Money Twice —Avoid disposable cleaning and serving products, individually packaged items and you will reduce the need to give us money to take the resulting garbage.
• Cover your load when traveling with trash. It’s the LAW(Lane Code 9.035 a and b)
To avoid paying extra fees, make sure your trash is secured in tightly lidded cans or tarped securely to prevent litter.
• Garbage costs money to dispose of. Most recycling does not! Load your vehicle garbage first and recycling last so its easy to drop off recycling first and get the $1 credit slip. But most important, by separating your recycling, you will have less garbage to pay for.
• These Items are NOT allowed in the garbage by state law: TVs, Computers, Appliances, Tires, Auto Batteries, and Motor oil, see the back page for options for these items.
ATTENTION: Beginning July 1, 2011, The BRING building materials collection truck will not be located at our Glenwood transfer station. If you have building materials to recycle, BE SURE TO STOP BY THEIR PLACE BEFORE COMING HERE. It’s right nearby!

Plastics Recycling Explained! It’s not about the number any more! The numbering system for plastic packaging began over 20 years ago. Since then, so many new manipulations of the basic 1-7 resins have been invented that the numbers don’t work anymore to tell us if it’s recyclable or not. You see, the process of forming plastic into various shapes changes that plastic permanently. A #1 PET bottle for example is made with a high heat injection molding and that same #1 PET resin can be melted to a lower temperature and pressed into a tray shape. But plastic melts with a memory; the two are forever different and cannot be combined to make another product that we know of.
Please do not blame recyclers. Recyclers do not decide what packaging and products are produced and put on retail store shelves. We cannot collect something if no one is willing to take it from us and turn it into a new product.
At this time, Bottle, Tubs, Jars and Jugs, is the best way to identify if it is recyclable in Lane County standard recycling programs. (please see exceptions in the side bar)
Just three easy steps will help keep the value of plastics high for those items that are recyclable in our area.1. If it’s a bottle, tub, jar or jug you can recycle it at a Lane County
Transfer Site. If it’s NOT one of these shapes, look for where to take these plasticss in the sidebar to the right or toss it in the garbage.
2. Remove and throw away caps, lids, spray pumps, or any other attachments. These items contaminate the recycling.
3. Rinse the container! You don’t need to remove labels.

Keep an Eye out for Compostable PlasticsPLA and other degradable plastics are a DANGER to current successful recycling systems. These plastics are labeled with a #7 or the code PLA. This new type of plastic may have recycling or composting options when collected in large quantities but are a terrible contaminant to our current recycling systems. Contact Lane County’s Waste Reduction Specialist if you wish to explore these options at 541-682-4339.
