The three-quarter sister by Scissor

Kick (Redoute’s Choice) to this

season’s Brisbane two-year-old

winner True Moonlight (Not A

Single Doubt) yesterday topped the opening

Book 2 session of the Magic Millions Gold

Coast Yearling Sale, helping push the aggregate

beyond $200 million in the company’s history.

The $300,000 filly, catalogued as Lot 1010

and offered by Arrowfield Stud, was one of 12

lots to make $100,000 or more in the afternoon

session in a market which enabled many buyers

to get on the results sheet for the first time in

2021. Continued on page 2>>

The filly, whose sibling True Moonlight

(Not A Single Doubt) won at Doomben in October for Gold Coast trainer

Gillian Heinrich, was bought by All Winners Thoroughbreds. Agent Denys

Chan, who had purchased the half-sister to Hong Kong champion Golden

Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro) by Capitalist (Written Tycoon) in Book 1, signed

for the filly.

The yearling is the sixth live foal out of the stakes-placed Moonlight

Hussey (Hussonet) who is a sister to the Group 2 winner Colorado Claire,

herself the dam of Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Gunnison (Not A

Single Doubt).

Arrowfield Stud’s Paul Messara said: “She was a lovely filly by Scissor

Kick. She's well related and is from a great family, the family of Gunnison,

and Colorado Claire,

who we sold one of

her progeny by Snitzel

earlier in the sale (for

$425,000).

“She was a

fantastic type and

those good sorts are

well found.”

With one session

to go, the Book 2

sale was averaging $59,548, with 83 horses sold yesterday for a total of

$4,942,500, at a clearance rate of 81 per cent. The total aggregate for Books

1 and 2 was last night sitting at $202,547,500.

“I think the good ones really stand out in Book 2, which can cause

a lot of buyers to come together and there is plenty of competitive

tension when they are all on the one horse, that's for sure,” Messara

said.

All Too Hard colts find favour with buyersLater, Brisbane trainer Chris Anderson landed his fifth purchase of

the sale with the addition of a colt by All Too Hard (Casino Prince) for

$170,000 after receiving a strong recommendation from agent Duncan

Ramage.

Another son of Vinery Stud’s All Too Hard, who is out of the dual

European stakes-placed mare Poppet’s Treasure (Dansili), was also sold

for $200,000 inside the last hour to Queensland trainer Kacy Fogden.

Anderson, meanwhile, said Ramage was adamant the Cressfield-

consigned colt, catalogued as Lot 1018, was a horse that had to end up at

his Eagle Farm stables.

“Duncan identified this horse on the farm some time ago and it was

one he actually said to me, ‘we can’t afford to go home without him’ and

we had a little bit more up our sleeve had we had to go harder,” Anderson

said.

“He loved the type of horse that he was and the stallion can throw a

very, very good horse as well. I am very happy to take him home.”

The colt is the sixth living foal out of multiple winner Nikkirina

(Beautiful Crown) who has produced four winners from as many foals to

race.

“Looking at his pedigree so

far in terms of who the mare has

been to, this is probably her best

chance (of success) now, I would

have to say, so hopefully that

proves to be correct,” he said.

Reflecting on what had

taken place so far at this week’s

record sale, Anderson said:

“It has been unbelievably

tough. I have taken five home

now but I reckon I have been

under bidder on seven, so we have had a real go. I am certainly pleased

with what we’ve got, but it has been very, very strong.”

Hedge banks on history repeating with Ellsberg’s brother

Gerald Ryan, who prepares the potential stakes-class horse Ellsberg,

will train the colt’s younger brother by Spill The Beans (Snitzel) after agent

Suman Hedge partnered with the Sydney-based horseman to buy a colt by

the late sire he used to train for $160,000.

Hedge, who has been active throughout the week through his

association with the Victorian Alliance colts

partnership, as well as his pinhook group selling through Silverdale Farm,

revealed yesterday his close following of the Spill The Beans’ colt’s family,

and said he was happy to team up with Ryan for the horse.

“Ellsberg is obviously a pretty talented galloper for Gerald and he’s a

horse that creates a lot of interest for me because I tried to buy Ellsberg as

a weanling and I just couldn’t get my clients onto the horse. He went for

$50,000 and then he made a lot of money as a yearling, so I followed him

quite closely,” Hedge said.

“You can see that he is a talented and progressive horse, so that was

the first part of it, and then I saw the video of the horse initially. I loved

his movement and then I saw the horse here at the sale and he presented

very well.

“He looks like an early type of two-year-old and he really resembled

the sire.”

The colt, who was catalogued as Lot 987 and consigned by KBL

Thoroughbreds, is the fourth living foal out of the three-time winner Love

Of Liberty (General Nediym). He was purchased by Pinhook Bloodstock’s

Dave Mee for Platinum Racing and Breeding’s Roger Sousa for $34,000

from the Aquis Farm draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National

Weanling Sale.

Ellsberg himself was also a

successful pinhook for Segenhoe Stud, who bought him for $50,000

before selling him to Ryan for $280,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions

Yearling Sale.

Hedge said: “As a seller, it’s been phenomenal. Magic Millions has

done a wonderful job. I can’t praise them enough for the catalogue

they put together and the way that they navigated some of the most

difficult periods of our time. I don’t think many people are aware of the

complexities that they have dealt with,” he said.

“They have created a very buoyant marketplace for nice horses and as

a buyer it’s been challenging because we’ve had to put ourselves out there

to buy the ones that we wanted. It’s great, vibrant, it sets the tone for the

rest of the year.”

The Victorian agent did admit, however, that it had proven to

be a market in which it was tough to place accurate valuations on

horses.

“Many times I felt like an idiot because people were asking me

valuations on horses and I was trying my best to put what I thought was

normal and I was so far off the mark,” he said.

“I’ve never been further away on some horses. There was a bit of a

perfect storm for colts with six or seven syndicates all trying to buy them,

and valuing them has been a bit of a nightmare, but we still worked within

parameters.

“Even the ones we were aggressive on, we still said, ‘this is the

maximum we can go to and if we get beaten, we get beaten’ but it has

been very, very challenging.”

AUSTRALIA

Isaurian set for Australia StakesDamien Oliver is on standby to ride the James

Cummings-trained Isaurian (Exceed And

Excel) in the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at

Moonee Valley on Friday night, with the six-

year-old gelding expected to be among the

nominations for the feature race of the week.

The Godolphin-raced sprinter made his first

appearance for almost a year when running

a close third to stablemate Roheryn (Lonhro)

and The Odyssey (Better Than Ready) in the

Favelon Quality Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at

Eagle Farm on Boxing Day. Despite being a

dual Listed winner, Isaurian is yet to perform at

Group level.

Thompson aiming two at CarringtonJohn Thompson will have two chances in

Saturday’s Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m)

at Randwick, with Chat (Deep Field) and Thy

Kingdom Come (Lope De Vega) set to line up in

the feature race on the card. Four-year-old Chat

was last seen finishing fifth in the Christmas

Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Canterbury on New

Year’s Day, one and a half lengths behind the

winner Eleven Eleven (Fastnet Rock), who

boosted that form when landing the Magic

Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast

on Saturday. Thompson’s other hope, six-year-

old Thy Kingdom Come, was beaten three and

a quarter lengths first-up in a Benchmark 88

over 1200 metres at Randwick on January 9. The

pair will take on a field which is set to feature

the Mark Newnham-trained Quackerjack (Not

A Single Doubt), who has largely disappointed

since landing the Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m)

and Liverpool City Cup (Gr 3, 1300m) last

season. He was last seen finishing eighth of ten

first-up in the Christmas Classic.

Journey beginsGroup 1 winner Mystic Journey (Needs

Further) will resume in the $50,000 Ladbrokes

Stakes (1200m) at Launceston on Wednesday

night. The star Tasmanian mare, who won the

inaugural All-Star Mile (1600m) in 2019, has

not been seen since finishing seventh in the

Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on October

31. A return to the All-Star Mile will be the main

target for the 2019 Australian Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m) winner and her trainer Adam Trindler is

expecting the mare to come on for the run with

1200 metres not being her ideal trip. Melbourne

jockey Luke Currie will take the ride.

Winter campaign for Alpine EagleSaturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL,

1400m) runner-up Alpine Edge (Better

Than Ready) could be lined up for a

winter campaign by co-trainers Toby and

Trent Edmonds. The colt finished his race

impressively under Robbie Fradd, eventually

finishing a length and a quarter behind

surprise winner Shaquero (Shalaa), having

been a long way off the pace in running. He

will head to the paddock today, giving the

training partnership time to plan their next

move with a Queensland winter campaign

thought to be at the forefront of their minds.

Alpine Edge has already struck twice at stakes

level, taking out the Phelan Ready Stakes

(Listed, 1000m) on debut at Eagle Farm last

month before landing the B J Mclachlan

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) when returning to that

track on Boxing Day.

Tycoon could have Diamond in sightsFinance Tycoon (Written Tycoon) will return

to Lindsay Park’s Euroa base after finishing

a luckless sixth in the Magic Millions 2YO

Classic on Saturday. Ridden by Luke Nolen,

the dual winner was forced widest of the 16

runners down the straight and finished an ever-

closing three and three-quarter lengths behind

the winner Shaquero. The colt, who won the

Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) second-up

at Flemington in November, could be targeted

at the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at

Caulfield on February 20 if he comes out of

Saturday’s race in good shape.

Halvorsen on track for Group 1 targetsThe Robbie Griffiths and Mathew De Kock-

trained Halvorsen (Magnus) made an

encouraging return to the track at Randwick

on Saturday after spending almost a year on

the sidelines through injury. The five-year-old

gelding finished fifth in the Kensington Stakes

(Listed, 1000m), two and a half lengths behind

the winner Fabergino (Maschino), on his first

appearance since suffering a sprained fetlock

when finishing unplaced in last February’s

Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m). Griffiths was

delighted with the run from the Group 3

winner and will now step up his preparations

for loftier targets down the road. “All reports

from the stable at home are very positive and

that he’s come through the run really well and

they’re very happy with him, so it’s onward

and upward,” Griffiths told Racing.com from

the Gold Coast. “We were bullish about him

returning and anything from fifth, fourth,

third was well and truly a pass mark for us. To

finish fifth, only beaten two and a half lengths

Page 10: A Group One draftA Group One draft...to buy the ones that we wanted. It’s great, vibrant, it sets the tone for the rest of the year.” The Victorian agent did admit, however, that

TOSEN STARDOM - FIRST YEARLINGS SELLING 2021| 9 |

with a bit of a zigzagging run, Matt and I were

absolutely tickled pink.” Halvorsen will now

be aimed at the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes

(Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington on February 13,

followed by a possible tilt at the Newmarket

Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) on March 6. “I think

you’ll see a really nice horse when he gets back

to Flemington in the Lightning and then he’ll

be in really peak condition in the handicap

scale of the Newmarket where I think you’ll

see the best run of the three,” Griffiths added.

“Obviously you want to win both of the Group

1s but, realistically, his peak run will be in the

Newmarket.”

Coolth on Adelaide Cup pathTony and Calvin McEvoy have locked in the

Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) at Morphettville

on March 8 as the target for promising

stayer Coolth (Dundeel) after his victory in a

2000-metre Benchmark 78 event at Flemington

on Saturday. The four-year-old gelding bounced

back from finishing fifth in a Benchmark 70

on his previous start and Calvin McEvoy was

delighted with what he saw on the weekend.

“He was quite disappointing last start, I

thought, even though he only got beaten three

lengths, I expected more from him that day,” the

co-trainer told RSN927. “He really dug in for the

fight yesterday which was great to see. His (Jye

McNeil, jockey) feedback was that he’s still got a

lot to learn, but in a really positive way, he’s a bit

like a kid still, so I take some confidence out of

that. We know he’s a genuine stayer and we sort

of earmarked the Adelaide Cup and worked our

way back from that, hence the month between

runs, but up to 2000 metres with the blinkers

on, it was really good to see him bounce back

like that.”

Declares War makes all for Cup winThe Matt Cumani-trained Declares War

(Declaration Of War) returned to winning

ways when he scored an all-the-way success

in Saturday’s Camperdown Cup (1600m)

under Patrick Moloney. The five-year-old

gelding was sent off a warm $2.60 favourite

and rewarded his backers with a half-length

success over Reserve Street (Street Cry), with

Fabian's Spirit (Bel Esprit) a further short-

head behind in third. Declares War took

advantage of breaking from the inside gate to

dictate the pace under Moloney and held off

some fast-finishers in behind to land his first

win since May 2019. He will now bid for back-

to-back country cup wins in next month’s

Colac Gold Cup (2000m).

Nifty off the markFormer jockey Neville ‘Nifty’ Wilson recorded

his first winner as a trainer on Saturday. The

73-year-old, who was granted his licence in

August 2020, saddled Silkstream (Equiano)

to win a 1000-metre maiden at Camperdown.

The four-year-old mare was making her sixth

start for Wilson, and her eighth on total, as

she beat Catch The Drift (Kuroshio) by half

a length. Since retiring from riding in 2012

aged 65, Wilson spent seven years as assistant

trainer to Geoff Daffy, who died in February

last year. In his 50 years as a jockey, Wilson

rode 2,078 winners, including five Group 1

successes.

Tests could solve Mystery flopLindsey Smith is hoping to get to the bottom

of his stablestar Mystery Shot’s (Shooting

To Win) disappointing performance at

Flemington on Saturday, with the four-year-

old set to undergo a blood test today. Mystery

Shot, who passed relevant vet checks at the

track post-race, was unbeaten in his first five

appearances but finished last of eight runners

in Saturday’s 1200-metre Benchmark 84.

Tofane to miss autumnThe Mike Moroney-trained Tofane (Ocean

Park) is set to miss the Melbourne autumn

carnival after suffering a kidney complaint.

The Group 1-winning mare spent a week at

the U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital after

falling ill and may be out of action until the

Brisbane winter carnival. The five-year-old,

who landed the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

at Randwick last April, was last seen finishing

seventh in the VRC Sprint Classic (Gr 1,

1200m) in November. Tofane will now spend

some time in a grass paddock as she recovers

from the illness.

Maloney hoping for quick comebackRyan Maloney could return to riding later this

week if an MRI scan clears him of any serious

damage following his nasty fall on Isotope

(Deep Field) in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas

(RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday. The

jockey was taken to hospital immediately after

the race and was cleared of any serious injuries,

but will undergo a further scan to ensure he

has not suffered any structural damage. “He’ll

have to go for an MRI just to check if there are

any small fractures, which there’s a possibility,

but they never found anything yesterday, so

he will have that done as soon as possible,”

Queensland Jockey’s Association president,

Glen Prentice told Racing.com yesterday. A

steward’s inquiry into the fall will be held in

the coming days after being put off on Saturday

while Maloney attended hospital.

Rawiller improvesBrad Rawiller is hoping to leave Bunbury

Hospital early this week after his condition

improved significantly over the weekend.

Rawiller was found to have fractured his

back, ribs and collarbone in a fall at Bunbury

on Wednesday after his mount Imprudent

(Oratorio) stumbled and dislodged him in

a 1108-metre maiden. The 42-year-old also

suffered a punctured lung.

Graham taken to hospitalApprentice Cejay Graham spent last night

undergoing treatment in hospital after

complaining of back pains having been

dislodged from her intended mount on the way

to the barriers prior to the fifth race at Lismore

yesterday. Fellow riders Brodie Loy and Chad

Lever both stood themselves down at Cowars

after the pair aggravated old injuries in two

separate incidents.

Flemington trio bannedApprentice Tahlia Hope was suspended for

eight meetings and fined $1,200 after pleading

guilty to a breach of the whip rules on board

Saturday’s impressive Flemington winner

Japery (Sizzling). Hope, who used her whip ten

times prior to the 100 metres (five more than

permitted), will be out of action until January

received eight-meeting bans for careless riding

in the eighth race on the card. McNeil, who rode

the winner Coolth, was banned for shifting in

near the 50-metre mark without being clear of

the unplaced Takumi (Mastercrafsman), while

Stackhouse pleaded guilty to careless riding on

runner-up Sikorsky (Pierro), who shifted out at

a similar point when not clear of the unplaced

Long Arm (Rock Of Gibraltar).

NEW ZEALAND

Waisake has Cup goalA perfect dress rehearsal from Wellington Cup

(Gr 3, 3200m) pre-post favourite Waisake (Zed)

at Trentham on Saturday has trainer Allan

Sharrock brimming with confidence about his

chances in the main event on January 30. In

the hands of stable apprentice Hazel Schofer,

the five-year-old came from last to destroy his

Benchmark 74 rivals over 2200 metres and

Sharrock is convinced he will lap up every

inch of his two-mile task in 12 days. “I thought

he would win on Saturday but not by the

four lengths that he put on them,” Sharrock

said. “The way he did it by circling them and

dominating certainly augurs well for his next

start. He will just eat that two miles as the extra

1000 metres is what he is looking for. I think I’ve

got him in the right form, at the right weight and

set for the right race. I really want to tick this

one (Wellington Cup) off for his owners and I

haven’t won a Wellington Cup either, so I would

like to put that on my résumé as well.” Waisake,

who will carry 53 kilograms in the Wellington

Cup, is currently rated the $4 favourite.

Richards aiming high with Quattro QuintaJamie Richards has outlined his future plans

for Saturday’s Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1000m)

winner Quattro Quinta (Darci Brahma),

with the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and

Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

top of his agenda. The two-year-old gelding

saw off Wolfgang (Puccini) by a short head on

Saturday and Richards is planning to strike

with him while the iron is hot. “He’s a real little

racehorse,” the trainer said. “I think we have to

make the most of him this season as I’m not

sure if he has the scope to train on. It was a

good strong effort, helped by the fact he found

the rail, which is a big assist to the two-year-

olds. He will go to the Matamata Slipper now

and then on to Auckland (Sistema Stakes) and

Manawatu (Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes).”

Johnson looking forward after reaching centuryQuattro Quinta’s Wellesley Stakes success

provided runaway premiership leader Danille

Johnson with her 100th win of the season and

she is hungry for more in the coming months.

Not content with bagging just the one stakes

success on the day, the 29-year-old also added

a Group-race double, partnering Our Hail Mary

(Ocean Park) to victory in the Trentham Stakes

(Gr 3, 2100m) and Avantage in The Telegraph

(Gr 1, 1200m), before rounding out her day by

winning the last race on Tabata (Savabeel). “It

was such a cool day and so good to get to the

100-win mark,” she said. “It was also my first

Group 1 of the season, which was also good as

I was getting quite frustrated about that as I’d

only managed to rack up some placings so far

this year. I’ve always said I would love to win

a jockeys’ premiership, but I don’t want to do

that without winning Group 1s along the way. If

you want to be one of the best you can’t do that

without winning the elite races. Now I’ve got

the 100 wins I want 110, then 120 and as many

more as I can get before the end of the season.”

Hannam return delayedRobbie Hannam has suffered a setback in

his return from a broken femur that will see

him off the scene for at least another seven

months. Hannam suffered his injury when

riding trackwork in July and had been making

steady progress in preparation for a return

to race riding. The jockey had been hoping to

get a clearance from his surgeon that would

see him back in action next month, but after

an assessment last week he has been advised

not to resume riding until a rod is removed

from his leg. That operation will hopefully be

scheduled for early August. Over his extended

break, Hannam has been keeping fit and while

disappointed about the delay, is remaining

positive and looking forward to his eventual

return to the saddle.

12 for OrfevreOrfevre (Stay Gold) sired his 12th individual

stakes winner when his son Shoryu Ikuzo (5

h ex Shoryu Moon by King Kamehameha)

posted a surprise victory in yesterday’s Nikkei

Shinshun Hai (Gr 2, 2200m) at Chukyo.

The Shozo Sasaki-trained five-year-old was

winning for the fourth time in 16 starts when

he beat Miss Mamma Mia (Tanino Gimlet) by

three-quarters of a length. Courageux Guerrier

(King Kamehameha) was another length and a

quarter away in third. Orfevre stood at Shadai

Stallion Station for a fee of ¥3,000,000 (approx.

AUD$37,500) in 2020.

50 for Heart’s CryHeart’s Cry (Sunday Silence) reached his

half century of stakes winners when Gratias

(3 c ex Malacostumbrada by Lizard Island)

stretched his unbeaten record to two with a

win in yesterday’s Keisei Hai (Gr 3, 2000m)

at Nakayama. Trained by Yukihiro Kato, the

three-year-old obliged as favourite to beat Time

To Heaven (Lord Kanaloa) by two and a half

lengths, with Ten Bagger (Maurice) another

length and a quarter away in third. Heart’s

Cry stood at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of

¥10,000,000 (approx. AUD$125,000) in 2020.

he beat Blackberry Wine (Oxbow) by a length

and a quarter. Favourite Wells Bayou (Lookin

Charles Fipke’s homebred, who had finished

seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f)

two starts previously, was winning for the fifth

time in 25 starts. Former shuttler More Than

82 for TiznowMidnight Bourbon (3 c ex Catch the Moon by

Malibu Moon) made a successful seasonal return

as he made all under Joseph Talamo to take out

the Lecomte Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Fair Grounds

on Saturday and in the process provide his sire

Tiznow (Cee’s Tizzy) with his 82nd individual

stakes winner. The Steve Asmussen-trained

three-year-old beat Proxy (Tapit) by a length,

with favourite Mandaloun (Into Mischief) just a

head further behind in third. Midnight Bourbon

has now won two of his five starts and also

boasts an elite-level placing courtesy of his third

in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Belmont

in October. Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred

Holdings, the colt is out of the unraced mare

Catch the Moon (Malibu Moon), the dam of

Grade 1 winner Girvin (Tale Of Ekati) and Grade

3 scorers Cocked And Loaded (Colonel John)

and Pirate's Punch (Shanghai Bobby). Winchell

Thoroughbreds paid $525,000 for the colt when

he was consigned by Warrendale Sales to the 2019

Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Tiznow was

retired from stallion duties last year at the age of

23.

Five for Race DayCharlie’s Penny (2 f ex Sweet Lorraine by

Warrior's Reward) proved to be a cut above

her rivals as she scooted clear in the lane to

bag the Silverbulletday Stakes (Listed, 8.5f) by

three and a quarter lengths at Fair Grounds

on Saturday. The Chris Block-trained filly beat

Souper Sensational (Curlin) and Moon Swag

(Malibu Moon) to become the fifth stakes

winner for her sire Race Day (Tapit). Unraced

Sweet Lorraine (Warrior's Reward) is also the

dam of stakes winner Mom's Red Lipstick, a

full sister to Charlie's Penny. Sweet Lorraine

has been bred to the Munnings (Speightstown)

for 2021. Race Day was sold to South Korea last

year.

UAE: Dettori to take first rides of year Frankie Dettori is to take his first rides of 2021 at

Meydan on Thursday, with the jockey set for a

prolonged winter stint in the UAE. Dettori, who

turned 50 last month, rode work in the midst

of an amber weather warning for boss John

Gosden in Newmarket on Saturday morning,

but will find the elements a lot less demanding

in the UAE, where the Dubai International

Carnival is due to begin this week. This year's

series consists of eight fixtures culminating

on Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) night on

March 27. Dettori plans to remain in Dubai

for the carnival and hopes to link up with the

Gosden-trained Dubai Warrior (Dansili), who

was shipped out to Meydan last week.

FRA: €8m in 2020 prize-money cuts to be repaidFrench racing bosses have pledged to repay

at least €8 million (approx. AUD$12.55m)

in prize-money cuts to winning and placed

connections from last year. France Galop's

administrative council first announced the

ambition to redress some of the reductions

enforced on them by the coronavirus

pandemic last August. However, the level

of compensation had been in doubt after a

second national lockdown in France at the end

of October. Provisional accounts for the year

reveal that €185m (approx. AUD$247.77m)

of €248m (approx. AUD$388.9m) budgeted

for prize-money and premiums was paid

out. Part of the 25 per cent shortfall is down

to the two months during which racing was

suspended last spring, after which France

Galop imposed graduated prize-money cuts

in order to stay within budget when the sport

resumed on May 11. Work to revalue more

than 3,200 races will commence after the

end-of-year accounts close on January 12,

and France Galop hopes to have what will be

a major administrative task completed by the

end of the month.

Frenchman Antoine Hamelin

banished the frustrations of a recent

barren streak to produce the first

quintet of his career to steal the

show at Sha Tin yesterday as Elusive State (All

American) left Tony Millard contemplating a

high-stakes Middle East tilt.

Hamelin erased the frustrations of a

51-ride losing streak with a stunning five-

timer – Golden Link (Per Incanto), Family

Folks (Snitzel), Ping Hai Bravo (Red Dazzler),

Hongkong Great (Lookin At Lucy) and Tempest

Express (Proisir) – to lift his seasonal tally to

13, ending a drought stretching back to mid-

December at Happy Valley.

“It’s a crazy day, amazing, I’m very happy,”

he said. “It’s been a little quiet, but today I’m

jockey of the day.

“To win five races, it’s amazing - last season

was very good for me (17 winners), this season

has been a little bit quiet.

“But you never give up. You focus, stay

strong in the head and you have to keep going.

Hong Kong is a very tough place.”

Separated from his family because of

Covid-19 restrictions, Hamelin said: “My life is

perfect - I’m happy in Hong Kong, I love the life,

the city and I have a lot of time for my favourite

hobby of climbing.”

Hamelin’s previous best harvest was a

quartet.

“The other time was a long time ago in

France (at Fontainebleau),” he said.

“I never thought I would do this today with

five winners.”

The US$20 million (approx. AUD$25.96m)

Saudi Cup (1800m) in Riyadh remains Millard’s

preference for Elusive State despite the winner

of yesterday’s Class 1 Egret Handicap (1650m)

not being among the original entries for the

world’s richest race.

Millard is keen to contest the US$12 million

(approx. AUD$15.58m) Dubai World Cup (Gr

1, 2000m) on dirt at Meydan on March 27 but

would clearly prefer the Saudi Cup on February

20, where a late entry fee of US$200,000 (approx.

AUD$259,640) is required to compete.

“One would have liked to have gone to

Saudi Arabia – the Saudi Cup would have been

his race over 1800 metres and that would be

the actual race for him,” Millard said before

referencing significant obstacles surrounding

travel from Hong Kong to Riyadh.

The Saudi Cup (dirt, 1800m) has attracted

more than 100 entries headed by a string of Group

1 winners, including Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f)

winner Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil), Charlatan

(Speightstown), Knicks Go (Paynter), Addeybb

(Pivotal) and Mishriff (Make Believe), as well as

Japan’s Omega Perfume (Swept Overboard) and

Danon Pharaoh (American Pharaoh).

Millard is confident Elusive State would

contend regardless of where the gelding heads

next after Joao Moreira unfurled a supreme

tactical ride on the dirt specialist.

“Quite clearly, he gave them a galloping

lesson here today because it (the race pattern)

wasn’t what we wanted,” Millard said.

“On the back of this, we’ll definitely be

going for the World Cup instead of the Group

2 Godolphin Mile because Joao feels that with

him losing his early speed, he reckons that will

be the right race for him.

“I don’t think he could have had a better

run in than this - I’m quite excited. I think he’s

going to be a big runner.

“It’s taken a bit of time to get him back into

form. Last year, we had hardly raced him and then

with Dubai coming and going (traveling to Dubai

before the carnival was abandoned because of

Covid-19), it really upset the apple cart.

“It took me time just to get him back into it.

Of course, when you run him on grass, you see

nothing. Any good dirt horse, they’re not in that

Group 1 league.

“I always knew he was that good and when

Joao took it up there to go in front, that’s why he’s

a champion – he saw where he was, in a hopeless

position. That’s the class of the horse, although we

changed the tactics, he still kicked on.

“He can run 21 (seconds) for the last 400

metres any day of the week, so I was very happy

with the run.”

“It’s just lovely to have a horse like this and

also to have a dream – that’s what it’s all about.”

The most impressive aspect about Elusive

State’s eighth Hong Kong victory was his effort

to quicken twice - once to surge mid-race from

the tail of the field to eyeball favourite Kings

Shield (Scat Daddy), before accelerating again

in the final straight to down Encore Boy (Smart

Missile) and Red Desert (Oasis Dream). Kings

Shield faded to finish fifth.

Hamelin’s impressive reign started with Ricky

Yiu’s Golden Link in the Class 4 Snipe Handicap

(1400m), the victory was the jockey’s first in eight

meetings – and it would only get better.

He struck again with Michael Chang’s

Family Folks in the second section of the Class 4

Sea Eagle Handicap (1200m), a triumph of clear

significance to the trainer, who had previously

prepared only one other winner for the season.

“Of course, it feels good. I think this is a nice

horse,” Chang said.

Chang’s runners had repeatedly gone close

to winning this season, with 11 runners-up

finishes and ten third placings.

But he lamented the overall quality of his yard

– with the obvious exception of Family Folks.

“The horses are not good enough, too many

old horses - I’m waiting for some new horses,”

he said.

John Size’s Ping Hai Bravo gave Hamelin his

first treble in Hong Kong after the accomplished

European nervelessly piloted the gelding to

victory in the Class 3 Heron Handicap (1000m).

Moreira emerged with a double after

Beauty Applause (Stratum) claimed the Class

2 Flamingo Handicap (1000m) to eclipse hot

favourite Wellington (All Too Hard), who

finished a close second.

Hamelin then reimposed his dominance

aboard Tempest Express in the Class 3 Kestrel

Handicap (1400m) in the last race of the day,

securing a treble for trainer John Size who on the

day, had six runners across the ten-race fixture.

ANZ Bloodstock News’ sales supplements to

accompany the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale. As always, ANZ Bloodstock News will be on

the ground at the sale, covering all of the stories that

break over the next few days.

This year, the sale will be held under conditions

that can only be described as the new normal: no

handshakes or hugs, minimal celebrations, restricted

yelling and shouting. Still, plenty will be flocking to

the Gold Coast’s sun-drenched climes for what will

be the most “normal” sale to be held in the southern

hemisphere in almost 12 months.

Enjoy the week; the team at ANZ Bloodstock News

is excited to provide you with unrivalled sales

coverage from the first inspections to the final fall of

the hammer.
