The Minster Machine Company has a long history of innovation andinvolvement in the development of presses for the can-making industryaround the world.

Early work with the originators of the “easy-open”can end has resulted in Minster’s becoming the world’s foremostbuilder of presses for easy-open end conversion. This success is basedon a design that meets the industry’s demand for high productionspeeds and extreme, consistent accuracy. Minster presses have beenused with several sophisticated end conversion tooling systems and arecurrently in operation in approximately 70 countries around the world.Minster continues to develop new designs and improvedmanufacturing techniques for end conversion presses.

Since the mid 1960’s, Minster has been building presses for theproduction of two-piece sanitary food cans and easy open ends.During that time designs have been constantly improved and refined, and today, Minster has become the unquestioned leader in presses forproduction of shells, easy open ends, cups and redrawn cans.

Development of the Minster Double ActionCupping press in the early seventies markedMinster’s entry into the D&I can making area.

In the decade following, the Double ActionCupping Press has become the industry’sfirst choice for producing cups in both D&Ibeer/ beverage can lines and draw/redrawsanitary food can lines. Its prominence grewbased on its high-torque, high energy driveand the mass, rigidity and precision neededfor the production of drawn cups withuniform wall thickness.

In its tradition of combining experience andinnovation, Minster is introducing new high-output presses for producing beer/beverageand sanitary food can ends with extremeprecision to handle down-gauging formaterial savings.

Minster’s can machinery knowledge is alsofinding very successful application in theproduction of high volume products havingsimilar configuration to cans . . . such asautomotive oil filter cans and battery cases.

If you want to produce high volumeproducts, with speed and precision, putMinster’s can machinery experience to workfor you!

Exceptional StabilityHeavy, massive crown and bed of fabricated steel, plus uprights of high tensile cast iron, combine toprovide an extremely rigid, low-deflection pressframe of four-piece tie-rod construction.

Maximum RigidityThe energy of the press is transmitted to theslides* directly over the work area through a fourpoint eccentric shaft of forged steel and fourconnections. (Two connections per slide) This shaftprovides extra stiffness and incorporates anexceptionally large bearing area (precision alloy-bronze main and eccentric bearing bushings areused). The full eccentric shaft also permits bearingsto be located immediately next to the eccentrics formaximum support.*Single-action machines (SAS) provide the same features with one slide.

Fast, Simple Shutheight ChangesHeavy barrel-type adjustment system provides solidslide support and makes shutheight changes easy.Either slide can be manually adjusted, independently, simply by turning the adjustment shaft on that slide.A digital micro shutheight meter on each slideindicates the shutheight in inches and thousandths.

Quick StoppingMinster cupping and shell presses are equipped witha Minster Combination Hydraulic Flex Disc FrictionClutch and Brake. The synchronized action of theseclutch and brake units provides quick stopping.

Full eccentric shaft is supported in the heavy, reinforced crownby eight bronze bearings, each constantly lubricated by arecirculating lube system. View looking up at slide faces. Outer slide guided within the uprights,

inner slide guided within the outer slide.

Excellent Slide/Bed ParallelismThe design and construction of the high tensile cast ironinner slide and the heavy steel outer slide producesminimum deflection. The inner slide is guided within theouter slide. Four connections, two to each slide, are screw-type and, for shutheight changes, each pair is adjustable as aset from one point through a cross-shaft. This allows thepress user to maintain accuracy of slide to bed parallelism atall shutheight settings.

Slide-guiding accuracy and parallelism are also maintainedby the exceptionally long and precise gibbing and byhydrostatically-guided pistons on the H-Series. Both innerand outer slides are guided throughout the entire stroke. Onthe gib-guided machines, the outer slide runs in eightadjustable bronze-lined gibs which are accurately squaredwith the press bed. The inner slide is guided by 45°adjustable front ways and 90° flat rear ways.

On the piston-guided presses, slide pistons provide guidingstiffness aided by hydrostatic oil pockets located to isolatethe slide from the angular front-to-back movement of theconnections.

Identically paired eccentric throws keep the slides parallelwith the bed at all points in the stroke.

Easy Part RemovalOn upright presses, finished parts can drop through the bedto conveyors beneath. After cutting, scrap can be dropped toconveyors at the back of the press. Large openings allowconveyors to run out in any direction — front, back, left, orright. Parts can also be removed easily with low-profileconveyors in slotted bolster.

BENEFITSLonger Bearing Life ~ Closer ClearancesGib-guided presses are lubricated by Minster’spatented MonitorFlow recirculating lubrication systemwhich provides a continuous oil film on all bearingsurfaces. This assures longer bearing life and closerclearances for increased precision. The system alsolubricates the gears, gibs and counterbalancecylinders.

An electronic flow-sensing package checks theamount of lubricant being pumped to all main andconnection bearings. Flow to all gibs is constantlymonitored to detect blocked lines. This system willdetect faults due to broken or blocked lines, cloggedfilters, low oil level in reservoir or a worn pump.

H-Series machines feature single point passagelubrication, eliminating individual bearing orifices andflow switches. Both systems provide exceptional oilcontrol.

Positive Support of Slide & Die WeightTwo pneumatic counterbalance cylinders on the outerslide and one on the inner slide support the weight ofthe slides and tooling. Pressure can be adjusted to fittooling being used.

Material SavingsThe large bed width enables the use of full mill widthmaterial, saving the cost of slit coil, while the accuracyof the press allows for much less skeleton webresulting in more material savings.

The accuracies of the press and feed combine to minimizeweb thickness.

Auxiliary EquipmentMinster can supply feeds, lubricators, pull off stands, reels, coil cars and upenders to complete your container makingsystem. Minster’s servo feeds provide accurate feeding formaximum material efficiency.

EC-100-QL

ECH-125 P2-100

Minster has been a major supplier of extreme - ly accurate high-speed presses for adaptationof sophisticated tooling systems used in theproduction of “easy-open” can ends.

Minster’s EC and ECH End Conversion pressesare dynamically-balanced permitting higherspeeds, and the main bearings giveexceptional support to the eccentric shaft toresist deflection and reduce stress.

Precision slide guiding is maintained by theclose- tolerance 8-point gibbing arrangementon the EC press and a combinationhydrostatic/hydrodynamic piston guidesystem on the ECH press. This assuresexcellent slide-to-bed parallelism at all times, contributing to the consistent close scoretolerance necessary for high part accuracy.

A quick lift slide feature is also available to raise the slide for quick access toinspect dies, clear jams or correct tooling problems. The design of this systemis a major time saving feature, and assures return to exact shutheight.
