JAFCO recently celebrated the ground breaking of its newest planned addition to the community - the JAFCO Respite and Family Resource Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. This state-of-the-art facility will support the growing number of special needs families in the community with a full array of services including therapy, family support, training, recreation, socialization and extended overnight respite care.

An unexplainable 1 out of 10 children born today is diagnosed with a developmental disability including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, and Prader Willi. One out of every 100 children is diagnosed with Autism. Eight out of 10 families raising a special needs child is experiencing divorce, and a disabled child is three times more likely to experience abuse.

Based upon a story written by Christiana Lilly of the Sunrise ForumVicki and Steven Stolberg were introduced to (Sunrise’s) Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options Inc. (JAFCO) when their Rabbi in Hollywood asked for help collecting toys for abused, neglected and abandoned children in the area. Eight years later, they have moved from Hollywood to Plantation and after becoming JAFCO godparents they started an educational endowment fund and created special events such as “Comedy Night” and “A Night in the Fast Lane” at Lexus of North Miami on January 29, 2011.Q. You said after the Rabbi told you about the abused, neglected and abandoned children, you cried, What about it moved you to tears?A. The Jewish community lives in such an isolated world that we had no idea that this is even transpiring within our circle. Every child touches our hearts - being that there were Jewish children

living right here in our community…it just tugs at your heartstrings.

Q. Have your two daughters influenced your work with JAFCO?A. Absolutely, and that’s what started the JAFCO College Scholarship Award, an Educational Endowment for the children living at the Village and the

whole premise behind the fund is so that the children work harder in middle

and high school.Q. What problems do they face that the fund helps with?A. These children can get into college, but once they get into college they also need food, housing, dorm supplies and a few dollars to go out on Saturday night. In the end, it is our hope that attending college, God willing, will help them break free from the cycle of abuse and neglect. As Graham Greene once said, “there is a moment in every childhood, when the door opens and the future comes in”. We are opening the door, and the rest is up to each individual child.“Vicki and Steven Stolberg are a special couple and we are so honored

to have them as part of the JAFCO family”, said Sarah Franco, Executive Director. “There are no words to express our appreciation to them for all they have done to help further the lifesaving mission of JAFCO”.

JAFCO recently hosted our 12th Annual Women’s Luncheon featuring “In Her Shoes” and “Best Friends Forever” author Jennifer Weiner (L). The event was held at the Jungle Island Treetop Ballroom in Miami, with more than 500 women in attendance from the tri-county area. Proceeds from the event benefited abused and neglected children from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach who have found a safe haven at the Marsh Children’s Center, the Emergency Shelter in the JAFCO Children’s Village.

Those who bought Weiner’s book “Best Friends Forever” at the event had an opportunity to get their copy signed and meet the author. Sponsors, underwriters and JAFCO Godparents were invited to a Champagne reception with Jennifer Weiner before the luncheon began.

Renowned Coral Gables fashion designer Mayda Cisneros produced an informal fashion show, and all of the garments shown were for sale for those who attended the event. Attendees also had a chance to win some exciting raffle prizes and beautiful silent auction items. The Wind Beneath JAFCO’s WingsMeet Clinical Director Wendy Jenkins

Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living from what we get but we make a life from what we give.” This sums up in one sentence the true essence of JAFCO Clinical Director Wendy Jenkins and it is no wonder that it is among her favorite quotes. Giving from her heart is what Wendy does best and she does it every moment of her life. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and in her role as Clinical Director at JAFCO since 1995, Wendy’s job simply stated, is to take care of everyone in her path, including children, families and staff. In her career there have been literally thousands of children who have been touched by her love and compassion and excellent clinical skills. Known as “Aunt Wendy” to all of the children of JAFCO, she has earned this title with her ability to make

each one of them feel special, safe and loved. She can instantly identify with the pain and suffering of a child or parent and immediately reassure them that they will be okay because JAFCO will help them. In addition to personally touching the lives of every one of the over 3,000 children that JAFCO has served, Wendy ensures that all of JAFCO’s clinical programs run

smoothly, including the JAFCO Children’s Village. The children know that there is no fooling Aunt Wendy, because she will know if you are not ok just by looking at you. Wendy is there

for everyone, whenever and wherever they need her and is on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year to this community. And no matter how busy she is, if there is an emergency with a child or a family in the South Florida

Jewish community, she will make time in her day. Prior to the opening of the JAFCO shelter, in addition to her job, Wendy was a JAFCO foster parent to over a dozen children who had no other place to live and needed her love and protection. Without her, JAFCO would not be the agency it is today. We feel both honored and fortunate to have her as our Clinical Director at JAFCO. There is no one like her in the world as she is truly.....the wind beneath our wings.

There is a road in Northern California called the Avenue of the Giants and it is one of the most scenic drives in the world, a 31-mile

portion of Highway 101, with 51,000 acres of Redwood trees. It is five hours north of San Francisco, worth the drive the

next time you are there. If you have never seen a Redwood tree, it may seem like something from a tall tale. Their height

is beyond imagination-taller than the Statue of Liberty, a tree wider around

than a Greyhound bus, a tree that can live 2,000 years, probably the largest living thing on earth – a beautiful

giant.

But amazingly, not only are Redwood trees beautiful giants,

they also possess amazing survival qualities just like

our precious children.The bark of a Redwood tree is very thick

and holds large quantities of water. When exposed to fire it chars into

a heat shield protecting the tree similar to a heat shield

on a space rocket. Redwoods get their name from their red bark and heartwood. The reddish-brown color comes from high tannin levels, a

natural chemical which provides protection against fire, insects,

fungus and diseases which may damage the tree.

When a live Redwood is knocked over, unlike other trees, it refuses to die; it will

attempt to continue growing via its limbs. If undisturbed, the limbs pointing up will turn into trees in their own right. Any time

a Redwood tree is cut, damaged, injured or diseased, a lump grows from the tree’s trunk known as a Burl. The Redwood regenerates

and never gives up. The root system of the Redwood tree is surprisingly shallow, especially given the great height of the tree. One way in which the trees are able to remain upright is by huddling close together with other Redwood trees.

Much work remains to ensure that future generations can enjoy these magnificent Redwood forests and much work remains to ensure that future generations of children enjoy the safety provided by this magnificent JAFCO Village, and we could not do it without our own personal giants, our JAFCO Volunteers.Thank you to all of our “giant” volunteers - those who volunteer in the shelter walking the babies around the village, feeding them, playing, tutoring or doing homework with the children in the shelter or the group homes, making chicken soup and delicious desserts for Shabbat, making tea parties and serving Passover Seder, catching hundreds of pounds of fresh tuna, buying gifts and organizing our Hanukkah drive, reupholstering our furniture, helping us stay organized in our offices, our files, our children’s rooms, our kitchens, our donation closet. Our Forever Friends who offer the children childhood experiences that they have never had and will never forget, chapter presidents and chapter board members who never stop working, talking about JAFCO incessantly and putting on amazing events that raise the funds we need to take care of our precious children. What is a Developmental Disability?A developmental disability is a severe, chronic disability that begins any time from birth through age 21 and lasts for a lifetime. While not always visible, these disabilities can result in serious limitations in every-day activities of life, including self-care, communication, learning, mobility, or being able to work or live independently. The five major types of developmental disabilities are: Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Prader Willi and Spina Bifida

The New JAFCO Respite and Family Resource Centerfor Children with Developmental Disabilities - Opening 2012

Given the alarming increase in the numbers of children with developmental disabilities and the tremendous stress this places upon families in our community, the JAFCO Board of Trustees has decided to expand our capacity to adequately serve special needs children and their families with the creation of the JAFCO Respite and Family Resource Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Set in a peaceful, natural environment, The Sam and Adele Borger Campus of The David Posnack Jewish Children’s Center will provide:

Respite care (two weeks per year) for a child with a developmental disability to allow the parents (and the other siblings) to have an essential break from the sometimes overwhelming stressors of parenting a child with special needs.State-of-the-art treatment, recreation, socialization, support, research and education for children, parents, siblings and professionals in the community relating to the care of children with developmental disabilities.Temporary shelter or foster care placement for a child with a developmental disability who is at-risk.

This project is partially funded under an Agreement with the State of Florida, Agency for Persons with Disabilities.Land for this project was donated by the Jewish Federation of Broward County and the Daniel D. Cantor Senior Center.

Because of these alarming statistics, the JAFCO Board of Trustees saw a major need in the community to help families with special needs children. Last year, they voted to begin an initiative to create the Center, which will offer support, therapy and respite placement to children with developmental disabilities and their families, beginning at the often devastating moment of diagnosis. With the help of Senator Nan Rich, Rep. Ellyn Bogdanoff and the Jewish Federation of Broward County, JAFCO was awarded a $975,000 appropriation from the state legislature to help with construction costs.

The Center will be 60,000 square feet and will accommodate hundreds of children per year. In addition, there will be three beautiful private homes on the campus for extended respite, which will serve 300 children a year. The Jewish Federation of Broward County and the Daniel Cantor Senior Center generously donated the 4.6 acres of land in Sunrise, valued at $2 million. The David Posnack Foundation along with JAFCO donors and board members, Sam and Adele Borger and

Stephen and Helene Weicholz have committed $1 million each to the Center for naming purposes. Construction should be completed on the new facility in 2012. More dollars are needed.

Conveniently located in the City of Sunrise on Nob Hill Road just south of Commercial Boulevard, The Sam and Adele Borger Campus of The David Posnack Jewish Children’s Center will provide respite care, support, training and therapy to families with children with Developmental Disabilities or Special Needs including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Spina Bifida and Prader Willi. 1 out of every 10 children are now diagnosed with a developmental disability. Autism numbers are rising as well with some reports claiming one out of every 100-115 children will be diagnosed with Autism. While the cause remains unknown, JAFCO is committed to supporting families in our community who are faced with overwhelming challenges.The Steve and Helene Weicholz Children’s Lodge will provide state-of-the-art supportive services for special needs families in a loving and beautiful environment. As an extension of JAFCO’s existing Family Preservation Program, we hope to be able to keep families together by supporting them, starting with that frightening and often devastating moment in which they learn that their child may have a disability. Our social workers and therapists will support the family every step of the way with case management and referral, speech, occupational and play therapy, music therapy, art therapy, bio-feedback and physical therapy. In addition children will learn to cook and be more independent in our Daily Living Skills Training Environment. After creating an individualized program to meet the unique needs of every child, our Fitness and Fun Gym, Computer Wiz Lab, Music and Drama, Music and Creative Arts Studios will provide a safe and fun indoor experience for the children and outdoors our Splash Zone Playground, Basketball Court, Nature Trail, Vegetable Garden and Petting Zoo and Pet Therapy Area will allow children to have recreational and socialization activities on an ongoing year-round basis.While the children are enjoying the center, parents can take a much needed break and go out for dinner with friends or spend time together as a couple, run some errands or just go home and relax. Sibling programs and support groups will also be available. For those who might not yet be ready to leave their child, they are welcome to join one of our parent support groups or training workshops located in our conference center/ballroom or relax with a cup of tea while meeting other parents informally on our second floor Parents Café which allows for observation of their children participating in the various activities on the first floor below. As the children get use to the center and the staff over time, they will then feel more comfortable coming for their two week “vacation” at the lodge in one of the 3 Guest Homes, thereby allowing parents to take a long-overdue vacation or maybe attend a family wedding, Bar or Bat Mitzvah or other event that might not otherwise be possible with their special needs child.

Polo Club Runs for JAFCO

Above: “It is important that these children are in a safe and loving environment” remarked Congressman Ron Klein as he presented JAFCO with a proclamation after the 2010 Polo Club Walk/Run held at the Polo Club of Boca Raton. The event drew hundreds of Polo Club Members, children, grandchildren and their pets, who all made the 5 kilometer walk/run along the Club’s perimeter road. The Polo Club event, chaired by Maddy Millman and her wonderful committee, raised over $30,000 for abused and neglected children living at the JAFCO’s Children’s Village.

More Chapter Events and HappeningsRight: The first event of the JAFCO Young Philanthropist Chapter, “Cocktails for a Cause”, was held in exciting downtown Fort Lauderdale, giving young professionals the opportunity for philanthropic involvement as well as social and professional networking. Mia IsdanerAbove: Mia Isdaner celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at Maine’s Camp Mataponi , a traditional girls camp owned and operated by her family. Mia donated clothing and camp supplies so the children of JAFCO could enjoy their summer camp experience as much as she does.

Max HirschBelow: Max Hirsch of Long Island, NY learned about JAFCO from a presentation at Shelter Rock Synagogue and was very moved by what he discovered about the precious children of JAFCO.For his Bar Mitzvah, Max made a meaningful donation of $6,000 to sponsor a Bar Mitzvah for a JAFCO child. Max celebrated his own Bar Mitzvah in Israel.

Jensen ButtersBelow: Selling her hand made jewelry and soliciting donations to JAFCO, Jensen Butters raised $500 which was donated to the children of JAFCO in honor of her Bat Mitzvah. As the daughter of JAFCO Godparents Marcie & Mark Butters, Jensen created and facilitated her mitzvah project from start to finish - devoted to help the community in a big way.

Naomi GalelAbove: Naomi has a sweet tooth and loves ice cream. For her Bat Mitzvah project she reached out to friends and family to raise close to $2,600 so that the children of JAFCO could enjoy a weekly ice cream social.

Maxx WinterAbove: During a touching family moment Maxx Winter donated $2,800 to the JAFCO Summer Camp Fund allowing the children of JAFCO to have wonderful camp memories like his own. Son of JAFCO Godparents Randi & David Winter and grandson of recommitted Godparents and Board Member Dorinne Gerstin and husband Jeffrey, Maxx represents a third generation of loving JAFCO donors. Mazel Tov to the entire family on such a special simcha!

Nikki MarshAbove: In honor of her Bat Mitzvah Nikki Marsh asked friends and family to make donations to the Marsh Children’s Center (JAFCO Emergency Shelter), raising over $3,000. Named in honor of her parents, JAFCO Godparents Darren & Caryn Marsh, the Emergency Shelter provides emergency placement for children at any hour of the night or day. Truly a family tradition, Nikki also learns the importance of philanthropy from her grandparents, JAFCO Godparents and founders of the JAFCO Weicholz Family Campus, Stephen & Helene Weicholz.

Dylan Fox-SniderAbove: Joining his siblings Aaron and Zoey in the JAFCO Bar/Bat Mitzvah Circle, Dylan Fox-Snider raised $1,000 for the children of JAFCO by selling greeting cards featuring his own works of ceramic art. Dylan’s love for art and creativity will allow the children of JAFCO the chance to enjoy similar opportunities. Mazel Tov!

Jonathan RubAbove: Joined by his parents, Dr. Beny & Marta Rub, Jonathan Rub came to the JAFCO Children’s Village to donate the centerpieces from his Beatles - themed Bar Mitzvah. Including customized T-shirts and many other donations for the children of JAFCO to enjoy. Jonathan’s dedication to philanthropy at such a young age is truly heartwarming.

Erin EgoziBelow: Erin Egozi wanted to help the children of JAFCO as part of her special day and along with 15 of her closest friends coordinated a drive for party dresses in perfect condition. Erin and her friends collected over 50 dresses that were donated to the girls of JAFCO so they can celebrate their own special simchas in style!

Paulina LevnerBelow: For Paulina Levner’s Mitzvah project, she hosted a beautiful brunch in South Jersey to introduce JAFCO to her friends and family and raised over $1,500 to provide music lessons for the children living at the Children’s Village. One of Paulina’s guests was so moved by the brunch that she became a JAFCO Godparent in Paulina’s honor.

Philip and Marcia Cohen have been supporters of JAFCO since learning about JAFCO from their daughter-in-law, Becky Cohen and her family’s experiences as the first JAFCO foster/adoptive family. Marcia and Philip were so moved by her family’s journey with JAFCO, they decided to come to the village for a personal tour, immediately found a place they felt was “phenomenal” and became lifelong donors. In 1997, because of their family and their passion for horse racing (their Horse, Closing Argument, came in 2nd at the Kentucky Derby in 2005), the Cohen’s decided to split their time between Philadelphia and Aventura. Both agree that they are very connected to their “roots” and the Philadelphia Jewish community, so they decided to leave a bequest of $2,000,000 to JAFCO with the acknowledgement that half of the money will be used one day to assist in building of a Children’s Village in the Northeast, in particular Philadelphia, and the other half will go towards the Children’s Village in Sunrise. In doing

so, Philip and Marcia hope that one day abused and neglected children up north will have a similar village to what already exists in South Florida.Q: What inspired you to get involved supporting Jewish causes?A: Marcia: I grew up in a home where my mother and father always believed in charity and my mother was involved with all these different organizations. We also believe that we must pass our philanthropic beliefs and values down to our children and grandchildren; this is our legacy to the Jewish community. Following in their parents footsteps, the Cohen’s children are very involved with helping the children of JAFCO. Benjamin and Ruthi Cohen of Philadelphia have hosted numerous parlor meetings and fundraising events. They have also helped to make key introductions for

JAFCO in the Philadelphia community. Louis and Becky Cohen of Aventura were pinned as JAFCO Godparents and hosted a family Chanukah party to raise funds for the children of JAFCO.Q: You two have also supported a host of other Jewish causes in the United States and Israel. How much does supporting these causes mean to you?A: Philip: It’s a major part of our lives because the Talmud teaches us “all Jews are responsible for all other Jews”. It’s the truth and I don’t see too many other people wishing to give to Jewish causes.

Philip and Marcia support numerous charities in the US and Israel including Western Wall, Aliche, Goldstein Youth Village in Israel, The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and JAFCO.

It is with heartfelt appreciation that we thank Marcia and Philip for taking the lead in introducing JAFCO to a new community and to one day creating a JAFCO outside of South Florida. Rana Bell, Director of Northeast Development said, “The Cohens are an incredible couple who are committed and dedicated to our mission and we are so grateful to them.”

When George Bernard Shaw so eloquently stated, “Life is not a brief candle, it is a splendid torch that I want to make burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations,” he may have been describing JAFCO’s newest board member, Delsie Lipton. When Delsie was introduced to JAFCO in 2003 by her sister, Iris Raderman, she knew instantly that JAFCO would become part of her life for many years to come. And indeed, giving to JAFCO has become a true Lipton family tradition. “I noticed how she took charge of our first luncheon in Miami Beach in 2003, wanting to raise as much money as she could for the children,” says Sarah Franco, JAFCO Executive Director. “Delsie is a natural fundraiser, and she can ask others to give because she gives so generously herself.” That very first day, Delsie became a JAFCO Godparent on the spot, along with her friend, Gail Corenblum. In the true Lipton tradition, Delsie’s mother, Felice Lipton (of blessed memory) and sister Iris later followed her lead and also joined the JAFCO Godparent Circle.

When her sister Iris named the JAFCO Golf Tournament in loving memory of her son and Delsie’s nephew Andy Schultz, Delsie was by her side sponsoring and working on the tournament. The first tournaments were held at Woodmont Country Club before moving three years ago to the Westview County Club in Miami. The Andy Schultz Golf Classic is a sold out success year after year and has attracted at least a dozen new godparents.

At each golf tournament, Delsie is surrounded by her children and grandchildren, and she has clearly passed the torch of Tzedakah to them, in the Jewish tradition of Le Dor Va Dor, from one generation to the next. Her

children, Jeffery and Lourdes Weiner, Jonathan and Jill Weiner, Jennifer and Peter Solnick, and her 7 beautiful grandchildren, Sam, Jack, Noah, Eva, Will, Farah and Emmy are clearly her pride and joy. Delsie considers herself to be the luckiest “grammy” in the world. Her daughter, Jennifer, is very involved in helping to raise awareness about JAFCO, collecting sporting equipment and clothing for the children at the village. Both of her sons, Jonathan and Jeffery, have been very generous sponsors of the tournament for many years and always bring new players to learn about JAFCO. Jonathan and Jill have their own foundation, Helping Hand, which has been a generous JAFCO supporter. They have also become the third generation within the Lipton clan to join the JAFCO Godparent Circle.

A graduate of Miami Beach High and UM, Delsie taught elementary school and spent 15 years working in the travel industry. The wonderful man in her life, Artie Weinstock, is always by her side, supporting her in all that life has to offer.

We are looking forward to honoring Delsie, surrounded by her beautiful family and loving friends, at the next JAFCO Gala on November 20, 2010. She has truly earned the Jacob’s Ladder Award for Child Advocacy.
