Whether you’re a follower of Christ looking for a healthy church home or a skeptic invited by a friend, we are thankful that you’ve joined us! This morning we’ll read, pray, sing, and preach God's Word with the aim that God would be glorified and that the gospel would sink deeper into our hearts.

TODAY’S FOCUS

This morning we’ll begin a new sermon series focused on our philosophy of ministry here at Redeemer. To launch this eight-part series, we’ll discuss the subject of being a gospel-centered church by looking at what the Apostle Paul teaches us about the meaning of the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. As we worship, we’ll rejoice in and focus our singing, prayers, and teaching on the good news that Jesus Christ "died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, was buried, and that he rose on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3-4). Explanatory notes about how we worship together can be found throughout this worship guide!

Understanding that, apart from Christ, we cannot meet God’s standard of righteousness as revealed in His word, we pray to God, confessing our sins together as a church, both sins of commission and sins of omission. We also ask God to forgive our sin because of Christ’s atoning work on our behalf and to transform us into the likeness of Christ by the power of Holy Spirit.

Our reader assures us, on the authority of God’s Word, that all who confess and repent of their sin and believe the gospel–that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures–are freely pardoned by God.

CALL TO CONFESSION Romans 10:9-17

. . .If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

THE PREACHING OF GOD’S WORD 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, “Redeemer DNA P. 1: Gospel Centrality”

I. A gospel-centered church is clear about what the gospel is (vv. 3-4)

Helpful definitions:

“Through the person and work of Jesus Christ, God fully accomplishes salvation for us, rescuing us from judgment for sin into fellowship with him, and then restores the creation in which we can enjoy our new life together with him forever” (Tim Keller).

“God, through the perfect life, atoning death and bodily resurrection of Jesus, rescues all his people from the wrath of God into peace with God, with a promise of the full restoration of his created order forever – all to the praise of the glory of his grace” (Ray Ortlund).
