Essay

Education is one of the most important parts of our life. The kind of education we all receives largely depends upon the kind of teacher we have in the school. A positive or negative approach could change the entire life of a child. A future of a child is depending on the teachers. The society that we live in have all types of teachers. Furthermore, today's students will be the responsible citizens of tomorrow; therefore all teachers should try to be a "good teacher."

First, a good teacher must have knowledge of his subject matter. A good teacher should know how to explain the content in easier way that he is teaching. In addition, a good teacher should be able to understand that it is important to teach the content in simple steps so all the students in the class can understand.

A good teacher must have mentally understanding to his students so that all students can understand the teacher. The behavior of a teacher must be tolerant. He should speak softly rather than using abusive language in the class. A teacher has his own style or way of motivating their students. Motivation plays an important part in a student’s success of learning and development. There are times when teachers spend more time with their students than most parents do, thus, a teacher is fundamental in shaping their students success. If parents or teachers are poor leaders our children are the ones who are at a disadvantage. When they shine as leaders our children blossom and the world is wide open to them. The essential characteristics of a teacher can be categorized into a few main teaching styles or leadership styles. Directing, participating, delegating, and combined styles are the main forms of teaching and leading.   The purpose as teachers is basically the same as any good leader, to provide purpose, direction and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission which in this case is to educate.

There are many things which make a teacher great and they all cannot be defined. However I have always considered several of them essential. In my opinion a good teacher is someone who first of all creates interest in studying, does not underestimate the children, has equal expectations of success from everyone and last but not least likes his job. A good

teacher always has a sense of purpose. He chooses very carefully the teaching programme and adjusts it to the needs of his students. Children always come first and that is why the decision he makes are based on how they will affect them. He shares experience with other teachers and thus is always learning new things. It is very important for a teacher to be a good communicator. He does not just stand in front of the class and lecture but tries to establish a dialogue and to find the best group activities in which every child to be involved. Personally a good teacher must be a religious type and he should say his prayers five times regularly.

The good teacher works with all students. A friend of mine told me how her math's teacher tolerates only students who are good at mathematics or those who have special interest in the subject. Towards the rest of the class my friend says he is very exacting. He gives homework and tests without bothering to ask about difficulties. He does not try to explain it and as a result many students keep getting bad marks.

I firmly believe teachers should not forget that all students no matter of their colour, race or gender have equal ability to study. Different students have different learning systems. Some can learn things easily while others need to spend more time over a given task. That is why it is advisable for a teacher to know his students individually so that he can remember what kind of problems they have and find the right way to help them. There is no doubt that teachers have immense influence on their students. That is why it is their responsibility to find the best approach of teaching and make classes more amusing and interesting.

Teachers have the very important responsibility of shaping the lives of young children. A positive or negative influence from a teacher early on in life can have a great effect on the life of a child. Teachers, especially at the elementary level, must be very creative with their teaching styles. Not every child learns the same way, nor are they interested in the same things. It is difficult to keep the attention of fifteen to twenty children under the age of ten. Classroom setup and design is a good way to get and keep the attention of students. Workstations are a good way to encourage different types of learning. By allowing children a chance to choose which activities they want to participate in, children are taking control of their own education. At the elementary level, children are always learning and sometimes do not even know it.
