A good online alternative to Apple iCards (R.I.P)http://popcard.me
When Apple exterminated it's iCards service, I took it pretty hard. Since then I have been an enthusiasticuser of Steve Dekorte's PostCard stand-alone ecard application. I still prefer PostCard as my primaryiCard creator.
However, PostCard is for Mac OS X only. Apple left Windows and Linux users out in the cold. Plus, many diehard Mac fans are shackled to Windows PCs at work. (Been there, done that.)
For these people, there is popcard.me, a new icards website which best emulates the Apple-like style, quality, and ease-of-use:
popcard.me gives your recipients that same minimalist JPEG-in-the-email experience that we loved somuch about Apple iCards. The fonts are beautifully anti-aliased, just like iCards were, and there is agrowing selection of attractive and flexible images (no captions on the photos, thank you very much). .The cards are even the same size Apple's were-- 620x312 and 516x416 pixels.
popcard.me embeds no annoying advertisements in the email (no Google Adsense on the PopCardwebsite, either, yay!!), and POPCARD.ME DOES NOT COLLECT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATIONthe way some other sites do.
Jamie Longstaff, the person behind the website is the author of the superb Pixaria gallery softwarewhich so many reputable professional photographers use to power their own commercial websites.PopCard was originally a PHP script with which anyone can add iCard-like functions to their ownwebsites. The PopCard PHP script is now free. Find out more about the free script if you would like toadd it to your own website.
popcard.me started off as a demo site for this free script, but it is growing into much more. Jamie isplanning on adding more functionality as I type this, such as, more photos and an uploadable create-your-own-card option.
Personally, I would like to see:
- create your own icard (pending)- text scaling- dated postmarks- multiple hidden recipients- send me a copy- some really wacky images
You can email Jamie from the PopCard website with comments and suggestions.
popcard.me and other ecard websites do not offer the creative control that software solutions likePostCard can and do. And if you still want a complete facsimile of an Apple iCard, you still need to useKyn Drake's free kCard Keynote templates.
But if you're not using your own computer, shackled to a PC instead of a Mac, or just prefer not to makeany creative decisions about your card beyond choosing the image and writing the text, please docheck out popcard.me!!

MacSmiley (38 months ago)To recap, here's a list of what I like about PopCard.me
1. PopCard.me's cards are the most Apple-like I've seen online. The JPEG's in the email. The cards are sized exactly the same as iCards were. (620x312, 516x416)
2. Tastefully designed website.
3. No bug-eyed advertisements on the website or in the email. Actually, noadvertisements at all.
3. More fonts, beautifully anti-aliased
4. Unobstrusive postmark.

Here's an image of the site, last time I looked:
and here's an image of a delivered PopCard in an email... a test image I sent to myself:
This is the kind of minimalism I like in an ecard. There's nothing to distract me while making ofmy card, and there's nothing to distract the recipient of my card from my message. Jamiewisely prints his links to popcard.me in discreet but readable gray text.
The only cards that get delivered with a more minimalist email are the cards I create withsoftware which use my email own client on my own desktop.
In fact, since Apple had the same type of text placed under each iCard, sending a nakedpostcard made with PostCard is so minimalist, I actually feel compelled to ADD text with a linkto Steve Dekorte's application!
"This card was created on a Mac with PostCard by Steve Dekorte."
That line is one of my email signatures, so it's a no brainer.

Actually, some faceless Flickr "member" just stirred up a hornet's nest of emotion withinme by following my postings on this subject all over the WWW, posting plugs for an inferioriCards copycat site which I have disliked since I found out about it last July.
I was hoping that if I ignored it, it would go away. But evidently not.
They were getting far too much negative publicity by piggybacking on my popular iCardspostings. Instead of publishing just the well-deserved criticism and ending up givingPopCard.me second billing, I figured I'll just give PopCard the boost it deserves.

Just Nora (34 months ago)Love this service too -- it's a great substitution for iCards, which I miss.
