An international summer leadership camp like no otherBuilt around ALA’s unique Entrepreneurial Leadership and African Studies curricula, our summer program engages young leaders from around the world in social entrepreneurship, design thinking, leadership training, adventure, and cross-cultural exchange. Participants practice leadership by working with social ventures, learn from start-up and experienced entrepreneurs, develop skills through team-based challenges, build a global network of peers, and discover the history, beauty, and diversity of South Africa.
GSP creates a challenging and stimulating environment for emerging leaders to collaborate with a diverse group of their peers from around the world to share ideas and identify opportunities for global change.

At GSP, I learned a number of useful lessons about what makes a great leader. I also enjoyed the work we did at our BUILD lab site as well as the excursions and I am grateful that I learned about the BUILD process. Furthermore, I believe that the BUILD process and the lessons I learned about leadership can be applied to almost any endeavor one chooses to take on in life, and hence, I would recommend the GSP program to anybody, regardless of what their academic interests may be.”

GSP seeks dynamic, motivated high school students between the ages of 14 and 19 years from around the world who are thrilled at the prospect of an intense program in which they will develop as ethical leaders, contribute value to a social venture, experience new people and places, and build lasting friendships.
Future leaders from over 30 different countries across Africa and the world are selected each year to attend GSP, making it one of the most diverse camp experiences for teenagers anywhere. Friendships at GSP become part of an international network you can rely on for life.
The future of Africa – and the world -- depends on young people making meaningful and impactful connections across boundaries of nationality, race, religion, culture, and class. In the decades ahead, those who chose to take risks – sharing ideas, tackling challenges, and building solutions with peers from around the world – will make the greatest difference as leaders in their fields and countries. GSP is your launch pad to becoming an entrepreneurial leader with a grounding in design-thinking, sense of adventure, and a global perspective.

Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, is by far one of the most astonishing places in the world. Literally translated “City of Gold”, Jo’burg is named for its large gold deposits and mineral-rich Witswatersrand hills. With a population of nearly five million people, Johannesburg is home to the one of the most diverse populations in the world in terms of ethnicities and cultures.
From historical sites reflecting the past of the country, such as the Apartheid museum and Vilakazi Street (home to two Nobel Peace Laureates – Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela); to modern structures such as the famed Sandton City Mall and the prominent street art scene in downtown Jo’burg, passing by Nelson Mandela Bridge, the City of Gold offers a unique and thrilling experience to its visitors.
Johannesburg is also home to the Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for being the world’s richest hominid site where the earliest ancestors of humankind were discovered. The Lion Park, Johannesburg Zoo, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and several other nature reserves make Johannesburg a city worth visiting and exploring.
All of ALA’s Global Programs have a powerful relationship with the City of Johannesburg. It serves as inspiration, context and a powerful classroom. Each year, we seek out amazing individuals and organizations that enable us and our program participants to engage effectively with the city and its constant evolution.

What happens when I arrive in South Africa? Students and educators arriving by air should travel into Johannesburg’s O.R Tambo International Airport, the largest in South Africa. All arrivals are met by a clearly identifiable ALA welcome team that will escort participants to our campus in Honeydew or the program venue.
Should I be concerned about safety? ALA offers a safe, world-class boarding school environment. All students live on our secure campus in Honeydew, a quiet suburb of Johannesburg, with experienced residential faculty and 24-hour staffed security. The ALA campus has a strict access policy and the residence area is protected by a biometric system, which limits entry to only the residents of each hall. Each hall has an emergency fire door, which is permanently armed. There are surveillance cameras, fire extinguishers, and emergency switches on every hall.All excursions – whether in the Johannesburg area or elsewhere in South Africa – are accompanied by ALA adults and carefully planned with a risk management screening
by our Security Manager. Events happening outside our campus will be held only in places with 24-hour security and approval by our Security Manager.
What is the ALA campus like and what services are available? The ALA campus is a quiet, green space that supports a vibrant school community. The campus includes on-site health and wellness services, dining services, unlimited Wi-Fi, in-dorm laundry facilities, athletic facilities, performing and visual arts spaces, and a library/learning commons.
Can ALA accommodate my dietary needs? Every day, three nutritious meals are served and three snacks offered to students. Dining services at all our programs are able to accommodate a variety of dietary needs and will work with individuals to ensure they are accessing healthy choices.
Will I be able to go shopping? There are several shopping malls in close proximity to ALA campus and all our conference venues. Program
participants will typically shop at Clearwater Mall, Northgate Mall, Sandton City or any of the other shopping malls around; there will be ample space in every program schedule to accommodate shopping.
How can I keep in touch with those back at home? Upon arrival, participants will be provided with an international calling card to which they will have access throughout their stay. Additionally students will be able to utilize ALA’s high speed internet connection for Skype calls, social media and emails. While students’ time at our programs will be quite busy, we encourage them to keep in touch with family and friends and share updates of their experience.
Can my parents/family visit while I’m at ALA? Of course! We welcome visitors to ALA throughout the year and there is always something exciting going on around campus, whether it be an enterprise showcase, internationally-recognized guest speaker or art exhibit. There are many guest houses and resorts in close proximity to campus to choose
from. South Africa is the land of diverse cultures, spectacular landscapes, unparalleled wildlife, and fascinating city life. A family vacation is highly recommended and we’ll be happy to give you some tips on places to hear local music, hike, surf, eat great local food, or see the “Big Five”.
Does ALA provide college counselling? ALA’s premier University Guidance services are available to Catalyst Term students. In addition to support around the admission process, the use of Naviance, and essay writing coaching, you will have access to SAT and ACT prep and testing. The Academy has a strong track record of university placements with our alumni studying in top universities around the world including in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and South Africa. Unless indicated otherwise, university guidance is not available to participants at GSP or ALAMAU.
Is financial aid or a scholarship available? Limited financial assistance is available for all ALA programs. You may inquire about available financial assistance at the time of
applying for each program.
What if I want to apply for ALA’s two year pre-university Diploma?If you are interested in applying to ALA’s two year pre-university Diploma after completing GSP or ALAMAU, you will be able to speak to a member of our recruitment team to guide you in completing the application. Participation at our global programs do not automatically qualify you for admission to our highly selective Diploma program, but it enables you to better understand the Academy and align your interests with our mission. You may complete the application for the Diploma online at www.africanleadershipacademy.org/apply.
