The shopping streets of the historical part of town are also just a short distance from the marina’s seafront promenade. Lined by quaint listed buildings and overhanging terraces, there is an array of shops dotted across the city center, from internationally renowned high-street brands to prestigious boutiques and designer showrooms.

HISTORICAL MONUMENTS

The archaeological remains of Kourion - which was one of the island’s most important city-kingdoms in antiquity - are of the most impressive on the island, and excavations have unearthed many significant finds, which can be viewed at the site.

The city-kingdom was built on the hills of the area, and overlooked and controlled the fertile valley of the river Kouris.

The magnificent Greco-Roman theatre - the site’s centerpiece - was built in the 2nd century BC and extended in the 2nd century AD. The theatre has been restored, and is now used for open-air musical and theatrical performances, mainly during the summer months, making it one of the most popular settings for high-caliber cultural events.

HISTORICAL MONUMENTS

Amathus archaeological site or Ancient Amathunta is located 11km east of Limassol center, is one of the most significant ancient city kingdoms of Cyprus which dates back to 1100 BC. According to mythology the site was founded by King Kiniras and it is here where Theseus left the pregnant Ariadne to be cared for after the battle with the Minotaur.

‘HORIATIKI SALATA’ GREEK SALAD

Bright red tomatoes, refreshing cucumbers, shallots, and the obvious Greek olives, sprung with extra virgin Greek olive oil, and a large piece of creamy feta cheese on top, seasoned with salt, pepper, and oregano.

PASTITSIO

Pastitsio is similar to moussaka and consists of minced meat layered with pasta and a tomato-based sauce and is usually topped with béchamel. It is baked in the oven until a slightly crisp surface appears. Pastitsio is creamy, rich in flavor and textures, and undoubtedly a staple in the menus of Greek-Cypriot mothers and ‘yiayias’ (grandmothers.)

GEMISTA

Gemista simply means “stuffed”. Different variations exist in Greek-Cypriot cooking, some of which include stuffed tomatoes, zucchinis, and peppers filled with minced meat, rice, herbs, spices and tomato sauce.

SOUVLAKI

A popular food which also acts as Cyprus’s version of fast food. Small pieces of meat are grilled on a skewer, and the sizzling meat is served in pita with tomato, lettuce, cucumber and onion. Pork and chicken are popular meats used in Cypriot souvlaki.
