A fun learning tool
THE students of Form One Inovatif from SMK Taman Maluri, Kuala Lumpur,
were posed a profound question: If you had to describe your life in just one
sentence, what would it be?
The reflective question was part of a classroom activity from The Star’s
Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) pullout. Students were asked to find and cut
suitable pictures and words from The Star newspaper to form their very own
unique, illustrated “life sentences”.
One of the students, Wan Nur Khursiah Wan Rozaimi, said that she liked the
activity as she could do it with her friends. “We can share a lot of ideas. It’s fun
and I think the pullout will help us improve our English,” she said.
“My life sentence is ‘life is like an unsolved puzzle that’s full of mysteries’,” she
added, explaining that it reflects the unpredictable good and bad things that
happen in life.
Another student of Form One Inovatif, Chon Jia Hen, whose life sentence read
‘it is not easy in life’, said that the project appealed to his competitive streak as
he could compete among his friends in coming up with a better sentence and
more elaborate artwork.
“I like using the newspaper in class as I can also read the news at the same
time,” he said, adding that he enjoyed doing the hands-on activity that
involved cutting and pasting.
While life may not be easy, learning English doesn’t have to be a drag when
you have engaging activities from the NiE pullout. This learning experience
was made possible by Affin Bank Berhad whose sponsorship of the pullout
benefited schools across the country, including SMK Taman Maluri.
To show their gratitude, the students of class Form One Inovatif made thank
you cards for Affin Bank during the NiE session.
English teacher Ambigah Devi Manigam said that the NiE programme is
beneficial as it will encourage students to read more. “Nowadays, students
seldom read. Reading is a good way to improve our English, so we are trying
our best to inculcate the habit of reading.”
“I like doing these types of activities when we have the time. It creates a
relaxed, enjoyable environment for students to learn. But it’s up to the
teachers to take the initiative to actually do it.”
She also thanked Affin Bank for the sponsorship. “Not all students can afford
to buy the newspaper. The sponsorship provides opportunity for more
students to use it.”
SMK Taman Maluri senior assistant (afternoon) Teh Swee Kee agreed that
the sponsorship is very beneficial. “The newspaper is a good and affordable
teaching aid. I always encourage the teachers to make use of it.”
With 30 years of teaching under her belt, Teh believes in active learning and
involvement from students. “Teachers determine how active their class is
going to be. They should add variety to their teaching process,” she said.
She added, “If children don’t find fun in learning, they won’t remember as
much. Learning for fun is better than learning for the examinations.”
Affin Bank Berhad operations and strategic services executive director
Shariffudin Mohamad, upon receiving the thank you cards from students, said
that the company is proud to have played its part in education and helping
students improve their English. “The pullout makes learning interesting and it
also caters to a wide range of language proficiency levels. Proficiency in
language is important for effective communication. And communication is one
of the key criteria to being successful in both social and corporate
environments.
“At Affin Bank, we believe that we must play a role in this area to help the
young to be more prepared as they grow up and be future communicators and
leaders.”
