A Foundation for GrowthIf the world were a perfect place,
all children would be healthy, smiling
and free from illness.
But the world isn’t perfect.
What if there was a place where entire
families coping with a threatening childhood
illness could find comfort as well as medical
expertise? What if that place was more like
home and the physicians more like family?
What if a child could be ill, but still play and
act like a child? And, what if it was a place
where the child’s parents could trust that
they were getting unparalleled medical care?
The world may not be a perfect place, but our dream is to make it a
better one. At the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children,
the future of medical care for our community’s children is being shaped
into something extraordinary. We
are dreaming of a place where
technology meets care in a unique
way designed for the needs of
families. Together we can make
it a reality. Together, we hold the
future of our children and the
promise of health.

Funding Opportunities Support from our community is what really brings the Florida Hospital experience full
circle. Generosity and compassion from people like you keep our community thriving.
With the support of financial contributions, there are many ways to make a difference
that enable us to better serve the community about which we care so much.
Here is an at-a-glance view of our Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for
Children funding priorities. Moreover, the following pages serve to show what happens
beyond the numbers. Hear firsthand how these programs truly change lives.
Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is the only site in Central Florida with an approved pediatric transplant unit. Our highly skilled team utilizes bone marrow and cord blood transplantation to treat everything from cancer to sickle cell and 70 other blood related diseases. Studies show that patients who receive transplants close to home heal better, not to mention the reduced strain on the family unit by not having to travel out of town. Donors have the opportunity to save a life by providing a transplant to someone who otherwise could not afford it.
Center for Child Development (CCD)
The CCD provides diagnostic evaluations, medical management and support to premature infants and children with behavioral and developmental problems. It is the only site in Central Florida providing these services in a comprehensive setting. While the CCD treats more than 2,400 patients each year, there are
another 1,500 children who have to be turned away due to limited space and professional staff. The CCD team utilizes a holistic approach to treat children and treats the poor and vulnerable, including uninsured premature infants, who comprise more than half the population. The CCD is in desperate need to expand to reduce the six-month waiting list and keep up with the demand for services.
Pediatric Neurology and Epilepsy
The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is becoming a Level IV Epilepsy Center, which is the highest designation for pediatric epilepsy. With the addition of a leading neurosurgeon in summer 2011, a pediatric epileptologist, as well as a 3T, high-tech operating suite, the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is positioned to become a destination hospital for pediatric neurology. Our goal is to build a program that will provide the best treatment for all neurology needs in the Central Florida community and beyond, as well
as conduct research studies that will ultimately lead to the cure of epilepsy.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
With the expansion of the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children, our Level II NICU unit on the second floor is in need of renovation and new equipment. The goal is to provide the same high-standard ambient environment that we have on the rest of the pediatric floors.
Healthy 100 Kids
Healthy 100 Kids is a unique program designed to teach children and families how to live healthier lives, and combat the epidemic of childhood obesity and the related health complications. The program is growing by leaps and bounds, and we are looking for partners to stand with us as we expand and grow. Philanthropic and strategic partnerships are key for the growth of this program, since more than 80 percent of
our patients are uninsured.
Working to Provide a Margin of ExcellenceSince 1908, the Florida Hospital mission has been to
extend a healing ministry that makes our community
a healthier place to live. We are fulfilling this mission
by building the most advanced health care programs
and services in Central Florida.
We are in a new era of medical progress. Here at
Florida Hospital, we have made great strides in
cancer research, bone marrow transplants, fighting
childhood diseases and bringing lifestyle medicine to
the residents of Central Florida.
Generous support to the Florida Hospital Foundation keeps our hospitals
on the cutting edge of technology. Thoughtful gifts of all sizes make possible the
equipment and research our doctors and scientists need to make the important
discoveries today that will help build a healthier tomorrow.
Today, more than ever, Florida Hospital’s programs depend on contributions from our
patients and friends. Your gifts can help tremendously in achieving the highest standard
of health care. We are a not-for-profit hospital. You can feel confident the dollars we
earn and the decisions we make benefit the people who live within our community.

Advanced Pediatric Surgery. Rapid Recovery. Nationally known for our pediatric surgery program, the Walt Disney Pavilion at
Florida Hospital for Children has performed more minimally invasive surgeries than
any other hospital in the region. Thanks
to these advances in surgery, children
are able to recover quicker and
experience fewer complications. Many
procedures just require a few stitches
to close. Everyone on our surgical team
– from the board-certified surgeons and
pediatric specialists to the pediatric
nurses – is focused on the same goal:
healing pediatric surgery patients
through the power of medicine, the
gift of compassion and the belief that
miracles happen every day.
The Vision for Program Funding Support One of the defining visions of the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for
Children is to create a nationally and internationally recognized center for pediatric
surgical advancement focused on innovative technology and quality outcomes. To
this end, the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children has joined with
the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement to establish the Center for Advanced
Pediatric Surgery. This Center is built on the platform of providing our patients
with the latest in minimally invasive surgical techniques and the latest training and
education for our physicians. The Center for Advanced Pediatric Surgery focuses on
areas of surgery, including ENT (ear, nose, and throat), epilepsy, gastroenterology,
general pediatric surgery, neurosurgery and urology and will expand into additional
specialties in the near future. Your donation would help us expand into these new
specialties as well as help provide the equipment and resources needed for surgical
training and education.

Expertise in performing advanced minimally invasive surgery is vital. It ensures that the techniques and strategies used do not affect the child’s ability to grow properly and gives them the best chance at returning to everyday normal activities as quickly as possible. For more than five decades, Florida Hospital has performed a wide range of ground-breaking surgeries giving families hope and encouragement for healing.
“We try to perform all surgical procedures using minimally invasive techniques whenever possible,” Raleigh Thompson, MD, says. “From major procedures like thoracic surgery to more common procedures such as gastro-intestinal and sinus surgery, advancements in technology allow us to operate with tiny incisions in almost any area of surgical specialization. For these children, that means reduced pain, smaller scars and expedited recovery. For us, that means a job well done.”“Take for instance esophageal atresia,” he continues. “This is a life-threatening congenital defect that prevents a newborn from being able to eat due to a structural abnormality of the esophagus. Surgery is the only treatment. Up until pretty recently, this meant using a rib spreader and cutting through muscles. It was a very invasive procedure. Today, we can use a minimally invasive surgical technique that requires a tiny three-millimeter incision that barely leaves a scar. We were one of the first hospitals to start using that technique.” The Center for Advanced Pediatric Surgery offers training on these techniques to surgeons around the world. In addition to onsite courses, there are four new pediatric operating rooms opening that are equipped to transmit live surgical feeds. This connectivity allows these advances in surgery, many of which are developed right here, to be taught worldwide. “Newest on the horizon is the use of robotics for pediatric surgery,” Dr. Thompson says. “We are one of only a few hospitals in the country that are equipped with the technology to use robotics in this area. We are exploring computer models and developing new procedures that are truly on the forefront of surgery.”

Providing a Unique Approach to Child-friendly Oncology Care The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida
Hospital for Children provides a full range
of pediatric hematology, oncology and
bone marrow transplantation education,
research, treatment and care. We
understand that having to deal with cancer
can be very overwhelming both physically
and mentally. This is true not only for the
child, but for the entire family as well.
As such, we are committed to providing
comprehensive care with heartfelt
compassion for children suffering from pediatric
cancers and blood disorders. This commitment is
evident in our integrated, interdisciplinary teams
that deliver specialized treatment, as well as in
our unique Disney®-themed healing environment
where we deliver our special brand of kid care.
Bone Marrow TransplantsCertain cancers that affect the blood may require
a bone marrow transplant. As Central Florida’s
only pediatric bone marrow program, children are
treated by the best minds in the field of stem cell
transplants. Our highly trained team has access to the latest research therapies and
techniques available. Working closely with family members and the child, we have
developed a program that offers the very latest advances in transplant medicine while
being ever mindful that our young patients need extra care every step of the way.
The Vision for Program Funding Support Our vision is for our pediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) program to be one of a
kind. The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is the only hospital

in Central Florida with a Certificate of Need from the Department of Health for these
services. The goal is to create a leading program close to home for patients who have
the need for a bone marrow and related transplants. In the world of the transplant
patient, the first 100 days are critical for survival, and studies show dramatically
increased survival rates in patients who are treated close to home and close to their

tremendous and much-needed
asset to the community.

Jessica is a survivor. “I used to have beautiful long curly hair that I wore down,” she
shares. “One day I wore my hair in a ponytail. My mom noticed that my neck was very
swollen. She took me to the doctor, and he suspected I contracted cat scratch disease
from my new kitten. I was given some antibiotics and told that if the swelling didn’t
go away in a few days, to come back for a biopsy.”
This was the beginning of a pediatric cancer journey for
13 year-old Jessica. After the antibiotics failed to help
the swelling, a biopsy revealed she had leukemia. Jessica
was in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant that
would deliver healthy bone marrow stem cells into her
body.
“My life changed really quick,” she says. “All of a sudden
I had to go to the hospital every two weeks, and I was on
many different types of medications that made me sick.
I couldn’t do any of the stuff I was used to doing because
I was tired and weak all the time. Even though I was
scared about the transplant, I wanted to do it so I could
feel better.”
At 15 years old, Jessica underwent a bone marrow
transplant at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida
Hospital for Children. Her family anxiously awaited the
return of their once bubbly and energetic daughter. They
held on to a strong faith in God and put their trust in
Jessica’s oncology team. After many difficult months in
the hospital, Jessica emerged a cancer-free teenager who quickly focused on her next
big challenge — getting her drivers’ license.
“When I was in the hospital, I would imagine what it would feel like to be back in my
own bed,” Jessica says. “Sometimes it felt like I would never get to go home. But, the
nurses and doctors helped me to stay positive. I just kept thinking about all the good
things that awaited me when it was all over. Now I feel totally normal again and just
have to get check-ups every six months.”

Heartfelt Cardiac Care for Children The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children’s multidisciplinary cardiac
approach provides a wealth of services to pediatric heart and vascular patients. From the
most common exams to extremely rare procedures, we have earned a national reputation
as a leader in the advancement of cardiovascular care. Depending on the child’s
situation, these surgeries can be minimally invasive or even performed robotically. As a
high-volume heart hospital, our pediatric surgeons perform complex heart and vascular
surgeries with a frequency that builds experience. What’s more, the team makes every
effort to reduce anxiety and stress so children aren’t scared.
Our comprehensive pediatric cardiac
program includes imaging services,
invasive and non-invasive procedures,
interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery,
vascular surgery, electrophysiology program,
cardiac rehabilitation and research. In
addition, Florida Flight I, an emergency air
ambulance, is available 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. We also staff our in-house
catheterization laboratory around the clock
for immediate emergency angioplasty to save
heart muscle tissue for critical heart patients.
The Vision for Program Funding Support Beyond the cardiac services currently
being offered, the Walt Disney Pavilion at
Florida Hospital for Children is seeking to
develop a Pediatric Open Heart Program and
Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Program.
The pediatric open heart surgery program is
needed to complete the continuum of care
for congenital heart disease (CHD) patients
and to promote the further development

Traveling for medical care has affected the family of Breck McCarl. “Our daughter Breck was born at the Florida Hospital Celebration Health back in 2001,” her father, Matt McCarl, shares. “Soon after birth, she began having pulmonary problems and was transferred to Florida Hospital Orlando. She was subsequently diagnosed with pulmonary atresia and tetrology of fallot and had to be transferred to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa for open heart surgery.”
“Due to complications, we spent the next three months in cardiac ICU at St. Joseph’s,” he says. “Worst of all, we had to repeat the surgery every few years, and will continue to do so throughout her life. So far she has had three open heart surgeries and has spent a total of over nine months in ICU at St. Joseph’s.”
“She also has to have regular heart catheterizations as well, not to mention regular check-ups,” Matt continues. “We have to travel all the way to Tampa for all of these services. It has been a huge hardship on our family to have to travel so far. We have literally driven thousands of miles over the years traveling back and forth.”

$10,995,614. The program is projected
to be operational by June 1, 2012.
George Palmer, MD, Medical Director of
Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at
Florida Hospital Orlando, understands
the importance of this. “My colleagues
and I are extremely well trained and
highly experienced to treat patients
with acquired cardiovascular disease,” he says. “The congenital heart population,
however, poses unique challenges. I believe that the addition of a proper congenital
heart surgery program will indeed vastly elevate the care of our adult population as
well as the pediatric population. I look forward to the synergy of pediatric colleagues
to enable one treatment of both congenital and adult cardiovascular diseases. The
Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital
for Children is positioned to provide to
this growing patient population a team
of congenital heart physicians in synergy
with our existing adult cardiovascular
physicians. This will allow patients
complete cardiac care from birth
onward.”

Myrtha suspected her son was different when he was two years old. “José hated the swing,” she says. “At age three, Seminole County did an evaluation, and he was enrolled at a Pre-K school for children with disabilities. We spent a lot of time praying for José. We long suspected that he had autism, but we weren’t sure.”
This was the beginning of a childhood development journey for her son. José was born at Winter Park Memorial Hospital with Pierre Robyn Syndrome, a facial abnormality. At six months old, he had his first surgery, enabling him to gain some weight. Following the surgery, he had to sleep on his stomach and wear a special corset for a long time.
“We went from neuropsychologist to psychiatrist, from neurologist to cardiologist, and it was finally recommended that we see a developmental pediatrician,” Myrtha says. “We made an appointment with Sandra Cely, MD, who diagnosed José with Asperger’s Syndrome.”When José and Myrtha started with Dr. Cely, José was aggressive and prone to temper tantrums and shaking. Since then, there has been a huge change in behavior. José is now doing well in school and working on his social-interaction skills with many successful changes. His mom says he is a survivor.
“I truly credit Dr. Cely as having a major positive impact on the life of my son,” Myrtha shares. “She is compassionate, loves what she does and always gives 100 percent. She really listens, takes her time and tells the truth. I’m glad that she doesn’t sugar coat the reality of our situation, while still giving us hope. Dr. Cely is one of the few physicians throughout our journey with a true calling. It is evident that she is in it for the right reasons, and she treats everyone who seeks her help — including many children who otherwise wouldn’t be served the right way.”

Focusing on Childhood Development
The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital
for Children offers an interdisciplinary childhood
development program, providing diagnostic
evaluations for young children with developmental
and behavioral concerns. This comprehensive
outpatient program treats patients who are
afflicted with neuromotor, physical, emotional,
psychosocial and behavioral development issues.
Many patients are autistic or suffer from ADHD
and other problems, placing them at risk socially
and academically.
The pediatric specialists observe, test and counsel families about the various
developmental and behavioral conditions these children may be displaying. This
assessment includes an extensive review of school reports and past medical
history, family questionnaires and observations, and an examination of the child.
The childhood development team will then prepare a comprehensive care plan,
which may include medical, developmental,
educational and/or psychological evaluations
with specific suggestions on how to implement
the recommendations.
The Vision for Program Funding Support The Center for Child Development is in dire need
to expand the facility and staff to accommodate
the 2,000 patients we are not able to currently
see. Your donation would enable the Center
to expand the program, educate families on
early interventions and resources, and provide
community outreach.

Healthy Kids Start HereHealthy 100 Kids is a Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida
Hospital for Children health and wellness initiative
designed to help kids stay active and provide parents
with valuable information, tools and resources to help
their child live a longer, healthier and happier life.
The Healthy 100 Kids difference is a wholistic lifestyle
and weight-management program that addresses each
aspect of physical and mental wellbeing, not only for
children, but for the entire family as well.
It’s far more than simply providing families with
the knowledge to effect change — it’s an entire
team dedicated to helping them take action.
Our physicians, clinicians and medical staff will
tailor a program with the goal of giving children
the best chance of living to a Healthy 100. The
interconnectivity between nutrition, fitness,
relaxation, relationships and body image will lay
the foundation for new household habits. While
there may be short-term incremental goals,
we offer all participants long-term support and
encouragement through a variety of means because we know that “staying healthy” is
a lifetime commitment.
The Vision for Program Funding Support The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is building the most
comprehensive program for the prevention of childhood obesity in the nation. Our
goal during the next five years is to help thousands of overweight and obese children
reverse the obesity trend and set them on track for a healthy lifestyle. Your support
would give low-income children and families access to program activities that promote
healthy eating and exercise, build self esteem and provide peer support. This program
is made possible by linking up with key partners, including Annika Sorenstam, the
Orlando Magic Youth Foundation and the Martin Andersen-Gracia Andersen Foundation.

Stephanie Butler began a health and wellness journey for her son Stephen. “I knew we needed to do something for Stephen,” she shares. “It was a critical time in his life to make a change and establish healthy habits. He was unhappy, and we had tried everything.”
Stephen was an overweight middle school student with low energy and a declining self esteem. After several failed attempts and an urge from Stephen’s pediatrician, Stephanie turned to the Healthy 100 Kids program at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children.“It helped me make lifestyle changes,” she says. “It wasn’t just another diet. In other programs, you lose weight, and after two months, you go back to your old lifestyle. Plus, you just exercise like a robot. In this program, you have fun and you meet friends.” Stephen was able to get back on the path of health and wellness. Beyond losing weight,
he has more energy and can play football at school. Where participating in sports was once a challenge, he now looks forward to just being a regular kid.
“It helps you with your self esteem,” he says. “It makes you feel happy. It’s not just because you lose weight that you are happy, but because you are healthy and can do stuff like everyone else.”

It took an incident during a car ride home for Diane Futch to seek medical advice for her son Hunter. “I guess the first time I really thought something was wrong was when he turned 16, and we were driving home,” she shares. “We drove around this lake, only 10 blocks from our house, and he suddenly went from one side of the road to the other side of the road. We knew then he had to go to the doctor.”
This was the beginning of a neurological medical journey for Hunter. He was experiencing confusional episodes related to seizures. Carl Barr, DO, did an in-office EEG, and Hunter had a seizure during the test.
Physicians performed an MRI that showed a lesion in his right temporal lobe. After a variety of medications failed to stop the seizures, Hunter bravely asked for a surgical procedure to remove the lesion. John and Diane were very apprehensive about surgery, but when the monitoring program showed an increase in seizures, the family decided to move forward and put their trust in neurosurgeon Eric Trumble, MD.
“When the surgery was over and the doctor told us it that it was cancer, but that they were confident they had gotten it all, we were so relieved,” his mother says. “Thank God it has been a smooth recovery. It
couldn’t have gone any smoother. It was like a miracle. We are just so grateful to Florida Hospital and the doctors.”
“In two weeks and I was perfectly back to normal,” Hunter says. “It was really fast and I got back to doing the normal things I used to do.”

The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children
is a recognized leader in pediatric neurological education,
research, treatment and care. Our goal is to be a
destination program for pediatric brain tumors and seizure
disorders with demonstrated clinical excellence and
family-centered care — advancing the program to national
pre-eminence. Our state-of-the-art neuroscience program
provides superior outcomes for patients, made possible
because every care provider is board certified with at
least 10 years experience in this specialty. Our team’s
expertise, when combined with the latest technological
advances, allows us to improve patient outcomes through
more accurate diagnoses, more effective interventions
and ground-breaking clinical treatments.
Epilepsy ProgramChild neurologists at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children are
specialists of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. Children are
treated for all types of neurological problems, including epilepsy. Families come for
world-renowned care and excellence in monitoring and treating seizures related to
epilepsy. Because these epileptic seizures can have many root causes, the neurology
team uses a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, including surgical approaches to
intractable epilepsy, supported by rehabilitative strategies.
The Vision for Program Funding Support Our vision at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is to become
a destination hospital for pediatric neuroscience care. With the addition of a leading
neurosurgeon, a pediatric epileptologist and a state-of-the-art 3T operating suite,
we will be able to provide the highest quality care by becoming a Level IV epilepsy
center, the highest level of epilepsy care a center may receive. It is our goal to build
neuroscience programs that will provide the best treatments for all neurological needs
in the community of Central Florida and beyond, as well as conduct research studies
that will ultimately lead to the cure of epilepsy.

It was an exciting time for mom-to-be Michelle Schneggenburger. “Everything seemed to be going along normally,” she says. “One day, I just felt a bit off. I saw a tiny spot of blood and thought it better to be safe than sorry, so I had my husband take me to the hospital.”
This was the beginning of a NICU medical journey for Michelle and her baby boy. At 24 weeks, she was experiencing pre-term labor and was immediately admitted into the Labor and Delivery High-risk Unit to ensure she had the best care possible.
On September 12, three weeks into her stay, she delivered her son, RJ, at 27 weeks. He weighed only one pound, 13 ounces, and was 13 inches long. His prematurity resulted in many severe medical challenges that required immediate surgery and long-term intensive care in the NICU.
“He had five surgeries before he even reached two pounds,” Michelle says. “He was so sick for so long. But, no one ever said ‘give up.’ One day, his nurse told me that RJ’s strength would come from me. Right then and there I made the decision to give him my unwavering hope for survival. His medical team gave me the honest facts and told me when he had a bad night, but they also told me to keep going.”After five arduous months in the NICU, RJ went home with medical equipment and a fighting spirit. It’s been seven years since that day, and he is now enjoying all the wonders of the world.
“I can’t believe my eyes when I see him,” Michelle says. “He is my miracle. It was such a long road, and it’s not over yet. He has cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, so he’s still under the great care of Florida Hospital.”
Giving Babies a Chance to Live a Full and Healthy Life The birth of a child is one of the greatest miracles
of life. A new addition to the family is a time
of celebration, joy and love as the newborn is
welcomed into the world by family, friends and
loved ones. Unfortunately, there are times when
things don’t go as planned, and the baby needs
an extra level of care that only a skilled team of physicians,
nurses and specialists can provide. When these issues do arise, the Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit (NICU) at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is here.
There is a feeling of unbridled hope that every child who comes through our doors has the
chance to live a full and healthy life. We see miracles happen every day, thanks to the
dedicated efforts of our medical professionals, amazing advances in medicine, and the
tremendous power of prayer.
The Critical First Hours of LifeThe first hours and days of a baby’s life can have a tremendous impact on their ability to
grow strong and healthy. We are extremely proud of our record of successfully treating
premature, small or sick babies, including those who face immediate and critical health
issues. Our goal throughout is to improve outcomes for these babies, providing them with
every opportunity available to lead a normal, healthy life. Because critical care situations
don’t happen on a set schedule, our NICU is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week
by an experienced team of highly trained neonatologists, neonatal nurses, respiratory
therapists and pharmacists. These professionals are focused entirely on the care of
critically ill infants.
The Vision for Program Funding Support When a baby comes into the world, there are times when they need an extra helping
hand. We are extremely proud of our record of successfully treating premature or sick
babies in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It is our goal to continue to renovate
and support the development of the NICU, providing patients and their newborns with a
state-of-the-art facility and environment that soothes both the newborn and new mother.
