Kolby Horne Grade 9 What is your favorite thing about GFSS? The school hockey academy What is one thing you want most in the world? To rule the world. What is one thing you can’t live without? Hockey. Well, we’re done. It saddens me to say it but our time here with the Weekly Howl is up. You’ve had the opportunity to get to know and love us - the staff of Volume Four, through our work and passion for this paper. It’s been a great oppor- tunity as students for us to connect with the community. This building, where the youth of Grand Forks spends so much of our time, is a mystery to the outside world. You, the public, our readers, “the com- munity” drive by every day but all you see is a building. A lot of you probably have no idea what goes on behind these doors. Having the op- portunity to publicize ourselves and find a voice in the community has been spectacular. As writers; and representatives of the student body in the eyes of the town, it’s impor- tant that we remain unbiased by our own beliefs. “A news sense is really a sense of what is important, what is vital, what has color and life - what people are interested in. That’s jour- nalism.” says Burton Rascoe. We have given you a glimpse of GFSS from the hidden perspective of its students, and all with only one hid- eous typo! Our thanks to Della at the Gazette and the publisher for such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You rock! As F. Scott Fitzgerald said “you don’t write because you want to say something; you write be- cause you’ve got something to say ” Elena’s though provoking words have proven this, letting you see things from a different angle ... offering the students’ insight on controversial topics such as “The Modern Day Self Portrait”, Eth- nic Halloween costumes, and Gay Rights. You’ve read Tyra’s in depth articles covering GFSS sports at their best, as well as her exclusive interviews with some of our coaches. Sabrina has been your eyes. Through her expert photography, you’ve experienced the highlights of the last semester. As for Jordyn, you’ve seen her in every aspect of the paper, she pulls together the finished product; giv- ing you the beautiful Weekly Howl layout. It’s been our pleasure writing for you. Peace Out guys! Writing for the Weekly Howl has been an unparalleled experience for me. Being in this class has giv- en me a chance to have my voice heard, to work as a team with some really wonderful ladies, and to learn more about the realities of journalism. I have a lot of thoughts and opinions but never the free- dom to explore and present them in a manner like this. Writing for an actual publication meant that I could develop my ideas, research them, and finally format them into an article that properly represented the facts. I am so thankful for the kind feedback my articles have re- ceived from the community. I was very nervous to put my writing out into the public where anyone could read and judge what I had to say. I am very thankful for the sup port from my family especially my Uncle Mel for offering quotes week. In the end, I think, we produced something that we could take pride in. Through all the writer’s block, the word counts, and the deadlines we did our job to the best of our ability and now it is time to say goodbye. I would like to thank our teacher, Mr.deHaan for guiding us in the way I imagine a real editor would, by driving us all in- sane and to the Grand Forks Gazette for making this publication possible. which I was never actually able to incorporate into my article. This group of five with only a writing background of Eng- lish class managed to pull together our own little version of a paper each The Junior Girls basketball team held a tournament at GFSS on Fri- day and Saturday, January 10th and 11th. The Juniors played their first game against BCSS and finished with an amazing 47-8 win. In ad- dition to BCSS, the Junior Girls welcomed Oliver and Mt. Sentinel to their tournament. The Wolves placed 3rd overall and played some impressive games over the course of the weekend. The Junior Boys headed to Summerland on January 10th for a tournament and played games against both Summerland and Penticton. Unfortunately the boys did not win any games in this tournament but played extremely hard and put in their best effort. In an unfortunate turn of events, the Senior Girls basketball team will not be playing any more games this season. Multiple players have been injured and unable to fin- ish the season, therefore the girls have had to call it quits. Although it is disappointing, the girls will continue to practice their skills up and look forward to a great season next year! It has been a pleasure to be a part of the Weekly Howl for this semester and I would like to say thank-you to all the readers who have given positive feedback or just simply enjoyed reading our articles each week. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to have my voice heard in the community and it has been exciting to keep the public updated on the sports events at GFSS. Thank you for reading!
