A Few Words from the Cellar… Welcome to the 2017 edition of our wine list.

We would like to introduce you to the highlights that it is to say wines we consider particularly worthy of your attention.

Firstly, the Sharrow Selection. This collection of wines available by the glass and by the bottle gives you the opportunity to enjoy a glass ideally suited to your palate.

Each entry has the Sharrow seal of approval. Please refer to pages six and seven.

Next we will cover the classic regions of France :

Champagne- We have selected Louis Roederer Brut Premier as our Champagne served by the glass. Roederer has an enviable reputation as one of the finest Houses

in the region. Family owned, they have a large holding of fine vineyards and use these to make some of the best wines we can offer.

Burgundy- three white Burgundy vintages for current drinking in a supple, rounded style are 2009, 2010 and 2011. Our 2002,

2004 and 2007 red Burgundies from both the Côtes de Nuits and Côtes de Beaune are likewise all showing well balanced fruit and tannins.

Bordeaux- a great dry white wine style often overlooked is Graves and particulary Pessac-Léognan. Superb, assertive wines.

Regarding the mature Clarets, you will find several fabulous years all showing very well. The younger reds from the Médoc offer good value as do the wines from

the "right bank", that is to say Saint Emilion and Pomerol, which with their base Merlot, are now softening and provide an ideal match to rich main courses.

Many fine examples here to show that ripe grapes handled correctly in a cellar can produce results worth enjoying in their youth.

The Loire whites based on the Sauvignon Blanc or Chenin Blanc are well suited to Sharrow starters and fish dishes with their restrained fruit character and clean mineral acidity.

Red varieties Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre from the backbone of the best wines from the Rhône Valley. Syrah dominates the Northern half of the region in Hermitage,

Côtes-Rôtie and Cornas with a blend of these ripe grapes going into the Southern heavyweights such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Fully flavoured main dishes best suit here,

as is the case for the range of characterful rustic wines from the South-West of France.

Elsewhere in Europe, Italy is producing some of its best wines for decades. Lesser-known indigenous varieties include Nebbiolo (for Barolo and Barbaresco), Sangiovese

(for many Tuscan wines) and Corvina (for Amarone). Whilst each possesses its own individual flavours, a common theme of wild dark fruit and subtle smoky oak with fine

grained tannin leaves the wines quite dry in style.

Our collection of Spanish reds is now quite comprehensive. A country with a combination of an excellent climate and fine traditional skills allied to modern wine making

techniques is producing some genuine modern classics. Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra wines combine the structure of Bordeaux with the finesse of Burgundy.

The famous sweet sherry Pedro Ximenez, fantastic partner with Sharrow's Cream Ices.

A wide range of sweet wines is available by the glass to match the desserts. Please ask the Sommelier team for recommendations when ordering your pudding.

Tawny port goes particularly well with our creamy, soft cheeses and genuinely enhance chocolate desserts. The Late Bottled Vintage style complements blue cheese well.

Turning to the so-called New World, California is currently producing some of the finest wines outside Europe.

Moving to South America, Argentina is fast emerging as a major player with wines to match the stunning landscapes from which they are produced.

Chile is now very well established and we must highlight the Carmenere grape a brilliant example of which we offer by the glass.

Australian estates producing sought after wines in a classic style are Henschke, De Bortoli and Philip Shaw and we are delighted to offer his perfectly balanced Shiraz by the glass.

New Zealand reds now of a real quality to rival their European counterparts are those based on Cabernet/Merlot blends from Hawkes Bay and Waiheke Island,

Pinot Noir from Central Otago and Syrah from Hawkes Bay. The Malborough district is still producing some of the worlds most distinctive and vivid examples of Sauvignon Blanc,

For the ultimate treat, we hold small stocks of some of the Worlds greatest wines including 2000 Cristal Rosé Champagne, very small production of Billecart-Salmon

Clos Saint Hilaire 1996, Le Montrachet, a collection of different prestigeous Grands Cru Classé Médoc, Penfolds Grange, Napa Araujo Estate.

We are also available should you wish to discuss your choice of wine or simply to place your order in advance, just telephone reception.

Finally, after your meal consider a selection of liqueurs and digestifs.

“Over 50 years ago Riedel designed the first glassware in history to suit perfectly specific grape varietals. It was the beginning of a long journey through

the world of wine and glass, and we are pleased to present our wines not only in the finest Riedel glasses, but also in stunning masterpiece decanters,

hand-made only by Riedel’s finest and most experienced glass-makers.

Please enjoy this perfect combination!”

The Sharrow Selection, Champagne, Rosé and White Wines

We have chosen the following extensive selection of fine wines especially to match the menu at Sharrow. From elegant, light dry whites, ideal as an aperitif or with fish, to fuller

bodied oaked styles to partner main dishes such as guinea fowl or duck. The range of distinctive red wines gives equal opportunity for light drinking or more intense combinations

of weightier reds and venison, lamb, beef or liver. As well as being ideally suited to certain dishes, each wine may well be enjoyed on its own. You will find several fine Ports

available by the glass towards the end of the wine list. For advice on matching a wine with a particular dish, or to help you choose the right style to suit your palate, do not hesitate

to ask a member of the wine service team.

Champagne and Sparkling Wines are served at 125ml measure, still wines are served at 175ml measure (a 125ml measure is available on request), dessert wines are served at 100ml, the alcoholic strength by volume of these wines is shown as a percentage in the description.

Red Wines, South America, Chile

Chile and Argentina have both enjoyed strong gains in recognition among British wine drinkers over the last decade and justly so. Established vineyards have been shown

to produce excellent results with red varietals in particular, namely Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile and Malbec in Argentina. These are strong wines with bold dark fruit but

ripe and supple tannins. Ideal with big Sharrow signature dishes such as Tournedos of Beef or game. Bin Vintage Bottle

Port Port remains one of the great fortified wine styles in the World. It is produced in the upper reaches of the Douro river valley, a vine growing region demarcated as long ago as

1756. Traditional methods are still present in the steeply terraced vineyards as well as in the Quintas, or Estates. Much of the initial grape crushing is carried out under foot to

extract the best colour and tannins.

Vintage style wines retain deep colour and firm dark fruit character needing bottle age to reach their peak Tawny Port is blended and left to mature gracefully in large wooden

casks, or pipes, and shows soft, mellow and rich flavours.

Ramos Pinto House, established in 1880, still holds today the strong determination of its founder, Adriano Ramos Pinto, to produce and selected the best grapes of Douro

Delimited Region of the production of its wines.
