    A FEW THOUGHTS ON ENERGY

Energy is essential for healthcare, infrastructure, food, GDP growth, etc., etc., (almosteverything) and provides a robust means for improving the quality of life. However, energy alone is not sufficient to ensure good quality of life.

India is the largest democracy with the current population of about 1.05 billion and is ona road to rapid growth in economy. The energy and electricity growth in India are alsoclosely linked to growth in economy. Indices of socio-economic development likeliteracy, longevity, GDP and human development are directly dependent upon the percapita energy consumption of a country. India is aiming to reach at least per capitaenergy consumption equal to the present world average (2200 kWh/a) by 2030 from thecurrent value of (660 kWh/a). The current installed capacity of ~ 138 GW(e) needs to beincreased to about 600 GWe by 2030 assuming the population of about 1.4 billion.Energy strategists in the country have realized the importance of judicious mix of energyresources to meet this challenge. A large share of nuclear energy is an inevitable choicein this judicious energy mix, sustainability and environment considerations. The nuclearis expected to contribute about 63 GWe by 2030, which will be steadily increased to 275

GWe by 2052, against the total projected capacity of 1344 GWe. In terms of providingclean, viable and sustainable energy and effective utilization of available nuclearresources, the development of fast breeder reactor (FBR) with closed fuel cycle is theinevitable option for India.

It is possible to achieve high GDP growth rate and total GDP with good quality of life withnecessarily not consuming large amounts of energy.

The foot-print and choice of the energy source should be judiciously decided by theenergy planners of the country in a holistic manner so as to ensure sustainable energy.

The technology capable countries should adopt nuclear energy, so that fossil resourcescan be used, at reasonable cost, and with security of supplies by needy countries.

realizing objectives of life commensurate with individual capability, robust grossdomestic product of the country, etc. are the indices of a good nation. The good qualityof life has to be ensured by robust defence capacity and capability to ensure that thenation occupies a position of earned importance in the community of nations. Thecountrymen and the management system starting with parliaments law and order andadministration system and other allied service functions in society have to be sensitive

and philanthropist to work towards the good of the last citizen in the country and theworld. A good nation works for enhancing capacity of the deprived nations rather thanexploiting the poor nations. The world society has to be need based rather than greedbased. Corruption is a disease, which is the result of poor ethics and greed. Parents, teachers, seniors and successful citizens have to take responsibility for rooting out thiscurse in the societies around them.
